Iran to host summit with Iraq and Syria.

“Iran has invited the Iraqi and Syrian presidents to Tehran for a weekend summit with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to hash out ways to cooperate in curbing the runaway violence that has taken Iraq to the verge of civil war and threatens to spread through the region,” the Associated Press reports. “Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has accepted the invitation and will fly to the Iranian capital Saturday.” The move is “a display of [Iran's] increasingly muscular role in the Middle East, where it already has established deep influence over Syria and Lebanon.”

I suppose it’s too much to ask that everyone else stay out of this, but that’s what needs to happen.

  4. AshenShard says:

Good, rather than waiting for our administration to stop acting like a spoiled two year old, the countries in the region are taking matters into their own hands to try and begin to solve these problems. How long until our administration comes out against these talks because Iraq is doing something for itself rather than holding the hand of big daddy USA?

  5. P O'Neill says:

We’re very close to the al-Maliki “I for one welcome our new Iranian overlords” moment.

    Absolutely.

I’d like to believe that this is a terrific example of how to accomplish global goals of peace and unity – but by now, I’ve learned that Bush and his supporters are incapable of learning anything. They hate to their own detriment, and sadly, ours. As long as it isn’t them killing people in the name of a god to get their way, they can’t see it.

Good for Iran. If they can help solve the conflict in Iraq, then perhaps our troops can leave and allow the Iraqi people to be rid of Bush’s OIl War.

  7. Klyde says:

    OK who am I?

“No one could have anticipated that toppling a secular Arab regime in Iraq would lead to Iran becoming a major player in the region.”

    5…4…3…2…

I expect Bush will manufacture intelligence this week that “proves” Iran bought uranium from Africa, out a CIA agent, and then bomb Tehran… It is the only game plan he knows.

  9. Tom In Maine says:

It would be wise for the Iranian president not to advertise where in Tehran he plans on holding this conference.

With Bush, Cheney and the rest of the neocons out there it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the administration would see the conference as a target and an opurtunity for a one shot soluution to their dreams of regime change for a huge hunk of the Middle east. All done in one fell swoop.

  10. goodscarrier says:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad just outflanked American President George W. Bush for the nine thousandth fucting time.

There is one aspect that the leaders of Iran, Syria, and Iraq will agree upon: US outta Iraq!!

  11. Zooey says:

GWB, once again, looks like a complete dumbass.

  12. theswan says:

Diplomacy, something our little boy president just can’t contemplate.
Maybe they can agree on getting little boy george a oneway ticket home.
It would be refreshing to see something come of plain talk. They are the people that need to settle this. Somekind of progress would put little boy george’s idea of war with Iran into question. His intelligence stovepipe would collapse. And dickey’s defibulator might just short out with disapointment.

I don’t see how Halliburton profits from this.

  15. triangulator says:

Hindsight is 20/20, but it is still not too late todo the following.
    1. Reinstate Saddam and withdraw US troops
    2. rebuild the Iraqi army
    3. Initiate regional talks between Iran, Iraq, Syria

In no time they should be at each others throats again. This should have been the American policy 6 years ago.

  16. tarazan says:

This is the work of James Baker who sees no way out without participation of Syria and Iran. But Baker and Bush Sr. promised Syria many things in the past that didn’t mature, like peace in the Middle East and US will help Syria get their occupied Golan Heights back from Israel . Before the Gulf war in 1991, Bush Sr. thought that including Egyptian and Syrian troops to fight along side with Americans against Saddam will help US position and will strengthen Kuwaiti and Saudi position..Good call. Now Baker calling Syria again and Iran to help out..that is what Tony Blair said too…that “they both should help out”…but also Iran helped US toppling the Taliban in Afghanstan after 9/11 to find out, three months later that they were called by Bush in addition to Syria and N.Korea as members of ‘Axis Of Evil”…Now Baker is trying to reverse things and need their help…Will Bush,Jr. cooperate and ease the situation..or will he ignore the advice of James Baker?. How can US have an empassy in Syria while calling Syria a member of axis of evil and visa vera having Syrian embassy in Washington…Baker is right ..we need to talk. We talked to the Soviets before,Chinese..and that was important in helping ease the tension between us and these countries and it was important in ending Communism in Russia without shooting a bullet.

The best way I can describe it is go ahead and highlight the desired text, and switch it to bold or italics. Then go back and replace the language between the with the word ’strike,’ making sure you leave the / on the ending .

Of course, this could be completely wrong. Sorry. :)

  20. Zooey says:

Crap, some of that didn’t make sense because some of the symbols didn’t show up.

You’re a smart guy, DieNowForPeace. Handle it. Heh.

  35. rod ruger says:

we could not have messed up mideast foreign policy any better if we had enlisted geniuses from every major ivy league school in the u.s. and asked them for a plan to destablize, destroy, kill, create chaos, and completely embarass the U.S. Good job neocons. Don’t blame Bush. There is an old adage that says, “do not mistake incompetence for malice.” He is incompetent, but the neocons are malicious.
