Hunter opposes more defense oversight.

By Nico Pitney on Nov 21st, 2006 at 5:16 pm

Hunter opposes more defense oversight.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), the outgoing Armed Services Committee chairman and “close ally” of criminal ex-Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA), says “he sees no need to revive an oversight and investigations subcommittee to question current and proposed Pentagon policies.” Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), the expected incoming chairman, thinks otherwise.

  1. Krazny says:

Trust us, we don’t need any oversight. A pretty big change from the usual republican line. I noticed when they were in the minority they were all over oversight, and the need to monitor the government, but in the majority, they feel it isn’t necessary.

  2. Rebel In CA says:

Fine. We’ll let the incoming Congress just go ahead and file indictments against all GOP criminals convict them and send them to Gitmo to serve time.

  3. lw says:

Of course he doesn’t. Let the President and the Defense Dept. do whatever they damn well please. That’s Republican policy isn’t it?

Duncan Hunter is California’s version of Tom Delay.

  4. Robert says:

People who are corrupt or incompetent never want oversight. Good people welcome good oversight – it makes them better.

  5. Tom says:

Trust us. This coming from a Congressman who sees “Duke” Cunningham as a close ally. Imagine that. A sitting US congressman honoring and standing by a convicted thief! Well, he is a republican, after all.

    Agreed.
That’s why it is so reprehensable that the Republicans have blocked every investigation and attempt at oversight in the last 6 years. Even blocking investigations into their own corrupt members in congress.

  7. Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party says:

Hunter obviously wants to protect his kickbacks.

  8. tarazan says:

And Hunter was the first to declare that he is running for president. You can see how open he is about investigating anything and he is simply happy with the status quo.

  9. Fredric L. Rice says:

These are the same traitors that want to abolish the FDA, the EPA, and open wide medical fraud — not to mention hand Social Security over to their Republinazi organized crime gangsters.

    Isn’t Christianity lovely?

  10. chimpeach says:

Somebody needs to sit him down and explain to him what happened two weeks ago and why he’s no longer going to be in the majority party.

  11. Publicus says:

Well, WE THE PEOPLE have demanded oversight of our government and the Pentagon—especially since it refuses to stay within the confines of the Constitution. That was one of the messages of the recent election.

  12. veritas says:

Yes, We, the people will demand oversight. Certainly it’s not what Hunter wants (he’s in old Dukie’s clan) but it’s what is going to BE! Get used to it GOP….your “cakewalk” has ended. It’s time to hold you all accountable for crimes committed, and oversight on everything any Rethug touches is imperative.

  13. veritas says:

All traitors who have trashed our Constitution. The people have spoken and will take back this country from the bowels of corruption.

At this stage in the game, it still,”full bore ahead”.

“(T)he flurry of news and entertainment coverage over Michael Richards’ racist tirade is the latest illustration of this enduring innocence. And it isn’t as if America is unaware that it has bigots in its midst. Mel Gibson proved that again last summer that anti-Semites still exist in America and the ‘liberal’ entertainment industry. And now we’re shocked all over again like Drew Barrymore in 50 First Dates that there are racists there, too, in spite of being regularly reminded by clowns such as Sen. George Allen, Trent Lott, John Rocker and a slew of others.” – The Show About Nothing…

  16. veritas says:

Duncan Hunter and the GOP “et al” can spout off all they want. The fact is that it’s over for them (all but the crying and that will soon come). They won’t have a majority for anything so they’d better get used to sitting in the “back seat” for the next two years and, hopefully, for good!

  17. veritas says:

Actually, the more this inane group of idiots spout off in opposition to the rest of the country, it merely reinforces how out of touch this party is with the tempo of the american people. Keep digging those holes deeper – it will only solidify things for an 08 Dem victory. What fools they are.

  18. Fools on the Hill says:

It is why Duncan’s party lost!

  19. Josh P. says:

It amazes me that people can actually lobby against accountability. The reason Democracy was created was to give voice to the public and to enforce accountability to the government. End of story. A vote against accountability is a vote against American Democratic ideals. AAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

  20. RealScientist says:

I think the best thing the Democrats could do is open multiple investigations into war profiteering here and in Iraq.

I know this is way old news, but they all seemed to come together in a bipartisan way and defend their right, not be monitored watched.

  22. robert says:

Now this is foolish. As mentioned earlier, honest people welcome oversite and the people SHOULD demand it. So, I can see one positive change in the next two years.

  23. David says:

I’m in Duncan Hunter’s district. He never answered my inquiry asking him to justify turning off the Iraq oversight office.

  24. james k. sayre says:

If you hum that old tune, “There’s no business, like show business” you can substitute the words, “There’s no oversight, like no oversight…”

These clown Republicans are off in their own little fascist dreamland… I guess that six years without any oversight has made
them all a little giddy with power…

Rep. Duncan Hunter should be able to get a prime spot on that up-and-coming new Fox News “comedy” take-off on Comedy Central.

Someone in Hollywood should be able to come up with a new “reality” show to reveal corrupt Republicans freaking out in the new climate of some honest oversight…
    Cheers.

  25. Bluedog49 says:

Maybe Duncan doesn’t want any oversight because he fears he may be sharing a room with Jack Abramhoff one of these days.

  26. WC says:

If the people or companies he’s trying to protect have done nothing wrong, what are they so afraid of?

  27. Karim says:

Hunter will probably not even finish his term.

  28. Bluedog49 says:

I seem to recall Bush cultists saying “hey, if you haven’t done anything wrong, why are you worried about the government listening in on your calls. Hmmmmm.

  29. Jeanne says:

Good. Anybody who doesn’t like oversight has a reason why they don’t like oversight. They don’t want to get caught. I have dealt with it over the years as a parent. It gets old real quick.

  30. Innocent Bystander says:

Look how bad things were for the Reoublicans when they had the majority control of Congress. Think how bad it will be now that Democrats get to control the agenda, decide where to look and what to expose…I think Duncan’s Presidential aspirations may be short lived. I think we’ll be seeing a fair share of early retirements from members of the Republican Syndicate in the next Congress.

  31. SKdeA says:

Don’t open that closet, McGee… all the information will come tumbling out…

  32. ItsJustKarma says:

    1) For Republicans Truth Is A Threat.
    Oversight = Truth
    2) It seems to be quite obvious that after the lousiest
Performance ever given by any President in History,
every back bench moron believes to be able to apply
for the most important job this country has to offer.
Well, let me tell You this folks: if a burger-flipper at
the airport needs a background check we better make
sure a candidate for the #1 office has the required
skills. Those should exceed by far the demands for
a job at the gas station. As we know now (and some
did all the way) you can lie your way in into the White
House and damage the reputation of the whole Nation
of 300 Million People. I want to see a job application for
the President Of The United States. And You know what
happens if you make false statements at McDonalds,
    right?

Maureen Dowd says we’re lost in the desert. I can’t disagree with her.

  34. NOMORE says:

Our military is dying and their capacity to defend us from enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC. This was done deliberately. Look up Skull and Bones Bush and Kerry’s “fraternity” look up New World Order to see what the endgame plan is. We need to oversee not just the bush regime but the DINOs in the Democratic Party and that includeds Pelosi and her recent gushing speech to the criminal AIPAC organization. AIPAC members have been convicted of spying on the US for Israel.

Sen. William Fulbright called Congress “Israeli occupied territory”. No more wars and no more American kids dying for Israel EVER AGAIN.

#29, EXACTALLY, So, if honest people have nothing to worry about then they have nothing to hide. Listen to my calls all they want. Oversite for all, not some.

  36. Wayne says:

Listen to my calls all they want. Oversite for all, not some. — robert

If they are listening to mine, under the constitution, they better have a warrant, or they are breaking the law.

  37. robert says:

#37, if you are not suspected of a crime then there is no need to listen, is there. Probable Cause

  38. robert says:

#35, Some good points, but remember men (and women) in uniform ultimately do not die for ideas, banners, or countries. They die for the “soldier” to their left and right.

”No greater love has any man than to lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

  39. Joe Bua says:

No, I haven’t read all the other comments first, I don’t have that kind of time this morning.

I just have a hunch that Duncan Hunter has some big secrets and someone with more time and resources are going to find out what those secrets are.

And then I’ll read all about them and snicker.

I would think the person most likely to reveal those secrets is Melanie Sloane. I look forward to hearing if she has anything on Hunter.

  40. New Yorker says:

Of course, Hunter opposes any further investigation. He is not to keen to join his old buddy Cunningham in the slammer.

  41. coco22 says:

    What are you hiding Hunter?
