President Bush told a group of Indonesian schoolkids

that his favorite activity growing up was baseball. “I liked baseball. That was my hobby. Sports,” he said. “Then, perhaps realizing that sports was the wrong thing to push in a classroom, even a fake one, the president added: ‘The best thing that I did was to learn how to read.’ Continuing in that vein, the last thing we heard before being pushed out was Bush cautioning the kids that ‘there are people who watch TV too much.’”

    I don’t get it?

Bush said his favorite hobby as a kid was Baseball.

The best thing he ever did was learn to read.

Alot of people watch too much TV.

  3. Pity The Fool says:

Just can’t give up the ol’ straw man routine…

“There are people who watch too much TV”…

“There are some in Washington who want to coddle the terrorists…”

Maybe he should have just asked them to all pray together.

  8. JustSomeDude says:

His favorite Hobby was Baseball, he was so good at baseball that in college he was a cheerleader for his College Baseball team.

He still is trying to learn to read, lately he finally finished “My Pet Goat”, of course I’m talking about the Audio book.

He tried to read the constitution, but later put it down and said “It’s just a goddamn piece of paper”

He dislikes reading so much, he made it law that you don’t even have to be read your rights any more when arrested, he can just lock you up for years.

Of course I’m surprised he didn’t say they should be reading the Bible.

    In-curious-George at his best.

    shit, sorry about that

What the hell is Shrub doing visiting a school, when he should be in Teheran participating in the summit between Iraq, Iran and Syria?

  13. squegeeboo says:

he made it law that you don’t even have to be read your rights any more when arrested

Actually you don’t have to be read your Miranda rights when being arrested, that’s a fallacy promoted by TV cop shows.

  14. Erroll says:

The irony is that for the longest time Bush and his entourage tried to push the idea that Bush was just one of the people, someone the average person would want to have a beer with, seemingly taking pride in the fact that, despite somehow graduating from Yale, Bush has been one of the least intellectual presidents to ever occupy the White House.

He now claims, apparently with a straight face, that “the best thing that I ever was to learn how to read.” What difference can that make if he does not absorb what he reads? It is also quite doubtful if he is willing to approach reading a book that he does not agree with, with an open mind, considering how incredibly obstinate he is [stay the course till every American soldier is dead]. A person who has trouble stringing together a coherent sentence and who states that baseball was his best activity while growing up is hardly the person to offer advice to schoolchildren.

Is AirForce One searched for drugs the way commercial aircraft are? Can I get some of what the Prez is on? Is this a conspiracy by Cheney to have the Prez removed due to insanity, leaving the Dark One in charge?

Spot on chap, spot on, as long as you are arrested before interrogation, otherwise it’s just an ‘ongoing investigation’ and anything you say before being arrested can be used against you in court.

Interrogate you is such strong language. They are free to ask you all kinds of questions. How’s the weather? Are you OK? What happened before you jumped out the window? Gee why would her father dislike you? Do you normally lay down in front of bulldozers?

    Then BAM!

    dlet,

Since it’s you I’ll let you in on something I learned from Squegee,

They have to take you into custody where you can’t leave for it to apply. If you have chained yourself to other people and a big tree. Even though you can’t leave, they didn’t detain you :)

    Just kidding.

Can you guys remember all the way back to yesterday when Bill O’Rielly was attacking iPod owners and computer geeks in general?

Bush is doing the same thing. They are attacking people that watch TV, use electronics and enjoy technology.

Your party is now attacking people like YOU.

  31. Exley says:

BlueDog49….There is no point. It’s an inane thread with TP trying to concoct something out of nothing. You know I’m right. By the way, Exley’s a “he.”

    Comment by Exley — November 21, 2006 @ 1:05 pm

You are completely missing the point. The baseball thing is not it, nor is learning how to read. The point is an attack on technical people. You know people that like to post on blogs, much like yourself.

  33. squegeeboo says:

    Spudge

    Yesterday? But that’s tomorow!!!

Nice spin on that one by the way.

  34. Theobromos says:

“There are people who watch to much television……”
Yes, Georgie, your korporate master’s plan to dumb down America has succeeded all to well. The support base which has propped you up all your life and got you placed in office, has now become so dumb they cannot comprehend how to pull themselves off the couch and out of their torpor, much less accept the realities of a global community and how to become functioning members of it.

  35. Bluedog49 says:

Exley: “The point is an attack on technical people.”

As I posted, clueless as usual. There isn’t one word in the above post that indicates “an attack on technical people.” Which people? Exley, girl, you’re losing it.

  36. Exley says:

#32, Spudge…..“The point is an attack on technical people. You know people that like to post on blogs, much like yourself”

No offense, but “what?!” Where is there an attack on technical people? He said he liked baseball as a child, that kids should read more and that some children watch too much TV….What’s the hubbub, bub? I have heard that from teachers and my parents all the time growing up. Kids watching too much TV and not reading enough is hardly a novel concern concocted by President Bush.

Sorry…I just don’t see the big deal here.

First off it’s not my party :)

Second I think kids do watch too much TV and need to be outside playing and being active. Perhaps getting some exercise so they aren’t part of the couch potato generation. Studies show that people who exercise are healthier than those that don’t, which goes a long way to keeping universal health care down for all of us.

  40. Tundra says:

The point is an attack on technical people.

Most of the people I know that watch too much TV I wouldn’t consider “Technical”

It is an attack on anybody that uses anything electronic, not just TV. You want to focus on TV, thing you are not talking about the same thing I am.

  47. Exley says:

Wilco, He wasn’t asked what his favorite part of school was when he answered baseball. He was asked what his favorite hobby was….

Ok come on Spudge, fight a real battle here not one where your best case is comparing iPod users to couch potatos who watch too much TV. There are plenty of real things we can disagree on. The president of the United States telling kids to get healthy. Isn’t Clinton on Nickelodeon promoting kids to get outside and get healthy?

I think it is a good message for our children and am proud of both presidents for getting behind it.

  49. Exley says:

    Comment by Spudge_Boy — November 21, 2006 @ 1:38 pm

    Who has the comprehension problem?
Bush cautioning the kids that ‘there are people who watch TV too much.’”

I don’t see him mention iPods, computers, blogs or anything else. If he said people listen to too much radio it would have been an easier jump. Oh because O’Reilley said something about ipods, the president telling kids not to watch too much T.V is the same thing?

Oh Ok gotcha. That is about as hard of a stretch as the right claiming “Happy Feet” is an animated “inconvient Truth”.

  51. Wilco says:

Sorry, Ex. My mistake. Still, I think the statement works, for the most part.
Isn’t it that he didn’t say he enjoyed school most?
Anyway, I wouldn’t answer “school” either. All I wanted to do was get home to play with my GI Joes.
And I think I’m going blind from defending the president.

  52. Tundra says:

I am still waiting for BlueDog49 to acknowledge that he misattributed a quote to me…..

  53. Juan C says:

Hey, George, why dont you talk to them about Suharto, the dictator CIA supported and killed about 2 million indonesian and east timorese people, includin children.

Oh, Exley is here. Im sure you will be trying to put Suharto as a freedom fighter and a palladin of democracy. Im still waiting for those literacy rates bewteen Castro and Batista, Ex.

  54. Spudge_Boy says:

Ok come on Spudge, fight a real battle here not one where your best case is comparing iPod users to couch potatos who watch too much TV.

They are one and the same. I have two half brothers that are one third my age. They sit around listening to their iPods at the same time they watch friggin TV.

My dad, whos e is raising them is a die hard republican.

I won’t let my daughter be a couch patato. She plays outside most of the time. I am a progressive.

  55. Exley says:

Hey Juan….Nah, I don’t know enough about Suharto to comment. I will take your word for it…for now! :)

As for Batista and Castro, I don’t get your point…Are you claiming that Batista DIDN’T create educational programs for the “peasants”, built schools, and implementied the minimum wage for farm workers????

  56. Bluedog49 says:

Exley, you’re a real piece of work. You sit here each day stinking up these boards with false information and blatant right-wing propaganda, and you expect an apology from me for misattributing a quote??!! Keep waiting, a-hole. I want you to sit in front of your screen all day today waiting for that apology. Then, check back tomorrow. Maybe I’ll apologize some time during the night or in the early morning. You never know. Just keep waiting…

  57. Bluedog49 says:

You see, Juan, Exley prefers a society where there are such things as “peasants,” but disdains a society where these people are called “workers.”

I want you to present some proof of that. Is that too hard? You seem pretty sure about it.

  59. Exley says:

#56….BlueDog, I can tell you are embarassed about your rather careless error. I have implored you in the past to be more careful with your facts before you post something that is incorrect. In that way, you will spare yourself much embarassment in the future. I have corrected you so many times in the past that it is becoming quite tiresome. Again, please be more careful in the future.

    And I accept your apology.

    Robert Whitney
Journal of Latin American Studies, Vol. 32, No. 2 (May, 2000), pp. 435-459

I will look for more supporting documentation. You seem a tad nervous Juan that much of what you been taught about Batista may have been wrong. You should be willing to learn new things.

  67. Exley says:

Juan, Alas, I do not have my old college Latin American history books with me in the office….I am visiting my parents for Thanksgiving. I will see if the old texts are stored in basement or garage….

But in the meantime I will keep searching the net for more supporting documentation….I do see that Wikepedia also references Batista’s minimum wage and school building programs, but I never cite Wikipedia because of its dubious sourcing.

  68. Exley says:

Juan, Alas, I do not have my old college Latin American history books with me in the office….

What??????? So you learn Latin America history from your old college books????? Now, I get it. Who wrote that one? I bet it was Kissinger.

  71. Exley says:

    More for you, Juan:

The constitution of 1940, forged under the Batista appointed government of Carlos Mendieta, established more of a balance between the rich and the working class, protection for individual and social rights, support for full employment and a minimum wage, extension of social security, call for equal pay and equal work, and outlawing huge plantations (latifundias).

  72. Exley says:

#70…Yes, Juan…I read BOOKS! I am perplexed as to why that is shocking to you. And where do you get your knowledge of history, Juan? Does it come to you in a vision?

  73. Yikes says:

I think another point here is how Bush is totally ignorant of where he is and who he is talking to. How many of these kids know what in the hell Baseball is? Sure, he was asked about his favourite activity and yes answering with ‘playing baseball’ is not an inappropriate answer to the question. But, even Bush had to hesitate and revamp his answer. The freak’n President of The United States of America couldn’t think fast enough to give a good answer for those kids. Good grief. H. G. Bush should be damn embarrassed with his offsprint.

  74. Yikes says:

oops, offspring is the correct spelling. Not sure what an offsprint would be!

  75. Exley says:

Juan, In addition to my apparently (to you) shocking habit of reading history books, I have also had the pleasure of meeting with various people from Cuba who fled Castro’s tryanny (including a college professor of mine)….

Okay, Juan, I think I have provided enough backing for my statement that Batista initiated a number of social reforms (such as a minmum wage, building of schools, etc.)….Now, it is your turn. Pleae provide some evidence that Bastista launched no social reform programs.

  76. Exley says:

    #73, Yikes,

Indonesia is the host of this year’s Baseball Federation of Asia’s (BFA) “AA” Championship. The Indonesian team played powerhouses Japan and China.

I think the children know what baseball is.

  77. zoetmulder says:

That Indonesians actually do tend to watch a lot of very loud TV (as I’ve seen firsthand; even the Lonely Planet travel guide mentions it) was surely unknown to Bush.

  78. Juan C says:

I have also had the pleasure of meeting with various people from Cuba who fled Castro’s tryanny (including a college professor of mine)…. Exley

I have one of those also. Old aristocracy from Cuba. I bet they were bitching a lot when poor people were dying of hunger when they were living like kings down there.

I think I have provided enough backing for my statement that Batista initiated a number of social reforms (such as a minmum wage, building of schools, etc.)….Comment by Exley

    Yeah, 2 links. Enough.

  79. Exley says:

    One more for ya, Yikes:

Indonesia advanced to the Junior League World Series in 2006.

Baseball is quite popular in Asia. The kids know what baseball is.

  80. Yikes says:

Exley, oops. The point is still valid that Bush can’t think very fast before speaking. There are loads and loads of examples of this. I have actually been to Jakarta and South Samatra (early 90’s) and the only sports fields I saw were soccer fields. Goes to show that what you see is not necessarily the whole picture. Please accept my apologies for making an incorrect assumption.

  81. Exley says:

#78, Juan, These refugees were hardly aristocrats. You delude yourself when you think that the only people who have fled Cuba since 1959 were aristocrats.

Two links more than you have provided.

  82. Yikes says:

Oh for poops sake Exley. A die hard baseball fan as you are would have to keep correcting me. LOL

  83. Bluedog49 says:

Exley lives in opposite world. In his world, if people rise up and revolt against a dictator like Batista, it must mean that Batista was a populist. After all, in opposite world, it’s better for the people to have a government run by American organized crime than one run by the people.

  84. Exley says:

#82 ….Heh! Sorry, Yikes…But when it comes to baseball, I am QUITE serious! :)

  85. Exley says:

#80….Yikes…Please…No apologies necessary. I am just having some fun!

  86. Yikes says:

As Cuba as come up in this thread, I might add that I saw a good documentary on Cuba regarding the way they adapted to changes since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Cuba lost a lot of support after the breakup. One of the problems was feeding themselves. They had large farms that sold their goods to the Soviet Union. In many places in Cuba they have gone away from the large farms and increased their diversity of crops. Doing this without large amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. The program has been very successful and is a good example of what could be done in other places including first world countries. While Cuba is not a wealthy nation, compared with others that do have democracy, they have adapted and aren’t in danger of self destructing. The same could not be said for other poor nations that have been raped by the World Bank, World Trade Organization……

  87. Yikes says:

No problem Exley, I don’t take you or myself, for that matter, too seriously. I certainly don’t agree with you on many topics but at least you are capable of decent conversation.

  88. Exley says:

Thank you, Yikes….Yeah, there some people around (on both sides of the political spectrum) who take themselves and these exchanges waaaay too seriously. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Yikes.

  89. unbelievable says:

Explaining the punch line usually ruins the joke, but for the trolls who are so confused… Here goes:

I thought the point to the thread is to show that Bush, speaking to children in an impoverished area of the world, tries to relate to them with baseball, instead of taking the opportunity to tell them the value of an education. Baseball is irrelevent here. Just like Chimp.

It’s the fact that he’s so out of touch with his surroundings 99% of the time he says the most asinine and clueless things possible. Much like the Emporer and his invisible new clothes.

Except that this time, some one must have signaled to the Prince that he was deviating from his pre-rehearsed speech and he tried to correct himself… Making it even more laughable in a sad sort of way.

Hard to imagine that many children watching television in Indonesia anyhow, and if they do, it is most likely Al Jazeera…….
I agree that this episode of The Stumblin’ Dumbya is simply an example of how truly out of touch with reality Dubious is…..
Seems as though Poppy got his cage rattled a bit as well………..

Two links more than you have provided.

I have no doubt about what are facts and what is propaganda. I just wanted to know what source of info was yours. You didnt ask for links.

And therein lies your problem, Juan. You already have your mind made up on all issues and refuse to look at new facts of which you previously may have been unaware or open your mind to new perspectives….No offense, Juan, but you are a tad close-minded (However, I have no doubt you feel the same of me)…

Okay, Juan, I am taking off for the next few days for Thanksgiving. Be well…Although it is not a holiday in Mexico, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Bluedog49,

    OMFG!

We need to paste that every time he tries to say we are close minded.

#97 — BlueDog has once again dishonestly posted a name-jacked posting, which I did not write and which BlueDog knows I did not write and which I pointed out was a name-jack the same day it appeared. Since this is now the third time BlueDog49 has deliberately and knowingly used a name-jacked posting that was faslely attributed to me, I must know assume that it was he who did the original name-jacking. A truly childish tactic, BlueDog, and one that shows you are unable to debate matters on the merits and thus must resort to such immaturity. How truly pathetic of you.

For the record, here is the posting/e-mail I sent to ThinkProgress just hours after I discovered the name-jacked posting that was falsely attributed to me:

Here is what I wrote back on August 19 at 1:54 am when I saw that someone (presumably BlueDog) hijacked my screen-name:

NOTE: Post # 34 has been falsely attributed to me. I did NOT write that post. Someone has misrepresented himself or herself and posted material under my name. This “copy cat” poster has also submitted this material under my screen name on numerous other threads this evening. I would ask that the managers of “ThinkProgress.org” remove those postings or, at the very least, remove my name from them. When I registered on this site and created a screen name for myself, I provided my e-mail address, thus, the identification of the impostor should be readily ascertainable. Thank you.

Here is my response to BlueDog49 on November 10, 2006, which was the previous time that BlueDog dishonestly put up a name-jacked posting of mine that he knew I had not written:

#137, Ah, BlueDog….Bringing out a posting that you know what not mine and was a “name-jacking,” which I reported to Thinkprogress right away.

Since you have done this twice, I can only assume it was you who did this name-jacking in the first place.

In fact, here is what I wrote on August 19, 2006 at 1:54 am:

BlueDog, name-jacking is frowned upon here. You should cease and desist.

BlueDog49 is clearly embarassed that I caught him in an error above (See postings #35 and 38)….Rather than simply admit he made a mistake, BlueDog49 has instead chosen to engage in the juvenile and univerally condemned practice of name-jacking.
