Appearing last night on MSNBC, Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) claimed that “the Democrats may not want to own Iraq but they own it now as much as this President.” Watch it:
Democrats have not controlled the White House or either branch of Congress since the Iraq war began in 2003. Over that time, numerous leading Democrats have called for laws, resolutions, and hearings to prompt changes in our Iraq policy. Even when Democrats do assume control over Congress in January, the Bush administration will retain the authority to set many of our foreign policy and military priorities.
The more likely truth is that Chris Shays — who “voted for the war and then stubbornly supported President Bush’s ’stay the course’ strategy until only three months ago, when he came out in favor of a timetable for withdrawal” — is just desperate to pass the buck.
Full transcript:
MATTHEWS: Let me ask you first about the Iraq war, you’ve been there so many times. You know the situation. What is it right now, the situation in Iraq with our troops?
SHAYS: Well, the problem is we’re a divided nation. We went into Iraq on a bipartisan basis and we’re gonna have to find a bipartisan solution, and the Democrats may not want to own Iraq but they own it now as much as this President. And that’s not a bad thing.
Fitz!

Am I really hearing elected officials pass the buck like some kind of middle manager with an impending tee time?

In this remark, as in so many others, you see the cognitive/behavioral link back to whiny kids who tattle, suck their thumbs and hug the teacher's leg all through recess because they're scared of the other kids.
Shays and the rest of his thumb-sucking minority consistently abandoned history, reason and prudence while in the majority and while working with a Republican President.
And now they want to blame the Democrats whom they ignored and legislatively emasculated all the way through the process.
Want some cheese to go along with that whine, Chris?
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:22 pmIt's been two weeks since election and a little over a month before the Democrats take over Congress, and look at the mess in Iraq they've made already.
The voters know it's a Republican mess, and that's what matter.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:25 pmNo comments.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:25 pmWe didn't break it so we don't own it; GOP does.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:32 pmSo the democrats bought a used car and that car was driven into the ground by the previous owners, the republicans. Democrats may "own" the car now, but it's the republicans who wrecked it.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:32 pmIf the Dems own it, then they can get rid of it.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:36 pmDemocrats own Iraq. Period. They never had a position and they never supported Murtha. More lies from ThinkProgress.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:38 pmHate to say it but he isprobably right. If we Dems don't do something to improve Iraq or at least push the hell out of Bush to do something '08 may be pretty bleak.
It ain't our mess but we just might be stuck with it...
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:38 pmDoes that imply that Chris Shays used to own it? And he is the reason it all went wrong? Wonder what he would say about that.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:39 pm#2 yes you heard it correctly. I have already seen letter to the editors in local papers where thhe rabid faithful are already blaming the democrats for the situation in Iraq and they have not even been offcially sworn in yet. It must be a new talking point.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:39 pmThe Dems didn't buy the car, NMRT, we confiscated the keys from the Repubs and gave them to the Dems because we were sick of watching the Repubs weave down the street and over the sidewalks, mowing down hapless pedestrians while they swilled booze, popped prescription pills, snorted lines of coke off the dashboard, and fondled underage pages in the passenger seat.
Yes, the car is a mess...it's all beat up and splattered with gore, there's a dead hitchhiker logded under the air dam, and it will take years to get the stink of booze and sweaty, desperate gay sex out of the upholstery, but that's the job we hired the Dems to do, and they better get started. They've got two years to prove to the electorate that they can do the job....if they don't, they can be back in the minority easily enough.

wow! stunning contribution by ren, thank you for injecting such insight into this debate.
anyway, the Democrats as well as the president DO own Iraq, because the american military destroyed the country, the president gave the orders and he was enabled by some of this site's favorite Dems who gave their blank check and thumbs up sign.
the point is this, its going to take this country coming together to get us the hell out. Then again, like the wingnuts on the right this is impossible as we have rhetorical points to win!
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:52 pmWrong, Iraq will go down in history as Bush's war. Sorry, you people aren't intellectuals. You don't take teaching jobs. You don't write factual books. You don't live in reality. You don't get to decide and revise history. It just happens.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:52 pmChristopher Shays should realize that the Republicans still have some time to improve the situation. The Dems don't own it yet. The Congress is still a Repub majority. So he should get to work and improve the mess they have made. Or they can continue to do nothing at all....his choice. What a loser.

November 22nd, 2006 at 2:02 pmSOME Dems voted for the IWR based on faulty & cherry picked intel plumped up by this admin. Some Dems have already said they wouldn't have given the prez the authority to proceed with the invasion if they knew the true condition of Iraq's WMD program and Iraqi popular conditions.
Until the Phase II study is released (to determine whether this administration lied us into war) and unless it conclusively finds that W didn't overstate the case for war and complied with the IWR (i.e., used the declaration for war as a last resort...hint: he didn't), this war is owned by W

No it doesn't. All it would take is for the president to bring the troops home. If he doesn't then Congress must make him do it (budget cuts). How many Repubs do you think would follow the Dems on that? If you seriously think the Repubs will suddenly work with the Dems to promote the Dems aganda you are sniffing glue.

Yes, those Iraqis were really threatening Spudgeboy's ability to post opinions on the internets tubes. This has nothing to do with the troops but with the leadership of this country.
November 22nd, 2006 at 2:07 pmWhat angers me is that one side is stating "It's not on us anymore, it's on our opponents". The government is supposed to be working together for the common good, but instead has been reduced to a team sport.
This would be a completely different thread if Shays had said 'This is our mess let's all do what we can to clean it up'. because it is OUR mess, regardless of who started it or who enabled it. We all need to work to fix it, together.
And ANYONE; be it verbally, legislatively, or otherwise, who is willing to distract from that or obstruct such progress should be stripped of title, access, and respect. This has less to do with him being a republican and more to do with blatantly making statements that are AGAINST positive progress in the Iraq situation.

November 22nd, 2006 at 2:15 pmThe Iraqi people own Iraq. Just committing imperial colonial aggression in the 21st century as Bush & Company did when they started terrorizing the Iraqi people in March 2003 does not give them any "ownership" of Iraq... It would seem that the war on Iraq was started to allow Halliburton and other GOP-run corporations to loot the our treasury and steal from the American people...

November 22nd, 2006 at 2:26 pmNow, that's disingenuous.
November 22nd, 2006 at 2:26 pmAll Americans own the issue of Iraq. And most Americans want to get the hell out.
Republicans just open the mouth to be heard. And nothing of substance ever comes out.
November 22nd, 2006 at 2:28 pmHe supported the war...until he saw that such support can cause him to lose his seat in Connecticut. And if GOP supporters of the war continue to be stubborn in the face of all facts now on the grounds in Iraq...They all might find themselves losing their seats in the next round...because the support is dwingling everyday...For Democrats, if they just ignore people and don't do what they promised to do..then they will also lose confidence of voters and this will translate to losing the House again.

Bizarre comment, to say the least, Karl (uh, I mean Jeff). Foreign policy is the President's perogative. Bush wanted the war. He and his team assembled phony evidence to sell the war. They pandered to the base nationalist instincts of their bedwetting supporters to drive a mob mentality in favor of the war. They viciously accused anyone who questioned them or their motives of treason. And they have done everything on earth to "stay the course".
So Jeff, I think you have some explaining to do.
November 22nd, 2006 at 2:32 pmWishful thinking, Shays! Perhaps by simple inheritance the dems will now have the voice to finding a solution, finally but , clearly, the blame for this debacle known as the Iraq War belongs exclusively to you and the repugnants with whom you associate....the lameduck, flagging GOP!

Then if the Dems now own Iraq get the hell out of their way and let them make the decisions on it. I swear the whiney right are the sorest bunch of losers that have ever graced this planet.
November 22nd, 2006 at 3:41 pmMr. Shays obviously has no appreciation of infamy, nor of the indelible imprint the boots of his party have left upon Iraq and/or the esteem of America as a whole. Nice work, Chris.
November 22nd, 2006 at 4:06 pmDear Ms. Bucket - Dems remind me of a bunch of spoiled, obnoxious kids. Waaaagh! Most Dems voted FOR the war a FACT Dems rarely, if ever, mention. When the going gets tough - the Dems go running. Your party is in a leadership position - have at it......
November 22nd, 2006 at 4:10 pmThe republicans and this administration were wrong about the threat of WMD, they were wrong about the amount of troops, they were wrong about disbanding the military, they were wrong about allowing chaos after the fall of Bahgdad, they were wrong about turning away from Afghanistan, They were wrong to lie to the American people.
I don't want them to run anything. They aren't conservative (500 billion + towards a war they haven't begun to say how to pay for it). Family values my ass, just look at Foley and Newt. Less gov't? Homeland Security, so it's a definite no there.
Republicans have become the party of Smear and Fear. They are best when they are the minority because they will stick closer to their supposed values.

Nonsense. He was the same brand of Christian as you - the most hypocritical kind...
My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exposed.

I initially gave up red meat, and then all meat after watching my father die from colon cancer over the course of 12 years. It had nothing to do with my political affliation, which at the time was actually right of center...
I am now vegan, because being a liberal means that I am able to value the life of something other than my own kind...
Funny how MA has time to blog the day before a huge holiday, huh?
November 22nd, 2006 at 8:17 pm*snort*-I missed that one. What does that mean? Seems like fun. Happy turkey day to all.

That's the equivalent of shooting pop out of your nose. I was cracking myself up thinking of The Hag offering any mea culpa.

Unless it is still in the womb, right?Hypocracy at its finest. A womans right over that of an unborn child.
Dems and Repubs both hold and equal share. after all, Congress approved it. Hell, even Goddess Hilary has been there to tell the troops what a good job they are doing.
Pass the turkey, pray to your God, support our troops in your own fashion. Have a good Thanksgiving

A libertarian is a USA far right winger who thinks that he has the right to shot everyone who comes near his nuclear shelter in the Ozarks (where he hides his illegal distillery), and an anarchist is a extreme leftist who believes in total social justice, freedom and no private property.

It's not hypocrisy (learn to spell it) to value a real life over a potential one. It's my own ideology (what you call religion). You want me to respect your right not to have an abortion, then hypocrisy is you not respecting my right to value a viable life over one that isn't. It's just as valid as you having the right to believing in invisible sky daddies, talking donkeys, burning bushes that speak, and folks rising from the dead.
Dems and Repubs both hold and equal share. after all, Congress approved it. Hell, even Goddess Hilary has been there to tell the troops what a good job they are doing.
On faulty intelligence and lies. Just like you're a Christian for the same reasons. Doesn't make you a real Christian, however. Because you aren't.
Pass the turkey, pray to your God, support our troops in your own fashion. Have a good Thanksgiving

There is no god. And you're either a hypocrite or a liar for saying you support animal's rights. Which is it?

If they're out of the womb already, they're already fair targets, it's not? Do you know how many children have died in Iraq? I know, you don't give a cent for any iraqi children. Well then. Do you know how many children in the USA go to bed without supper, thanks to the fear to "welfare freeloaders" of your kin? But hey, is far better to save the money for aggresion wars, it's not?
November 23rd, 2006 at 12:04 pmLet me make this clear for all of you as a resident in Mr. Shays 4th district. It was none other than Shays who plugged hardest for this war of all U.S. congressmen. I witnessed him stand 4 hours straight in front of a packed crowd and C-Span audience to carry the President's bags. Let me just say that Chris did not listen at all to his constituents who were extremely unconvinced of the threats Iraq posed to our sacred shores. He was as condescending then as he is today. After a 3% victory and Ms. Johnson and Mr. Simmons defeated, you would think the senior statesman would just shut up. The man apparently can not learn a lesson even after so many have died and suffered due to his contribution. He basically killed a cat through it own your doorstep and told you it's your problem. Bye
November 23rd, 2006 at 8:29 pmMy apology on the typo. He basically killed a cat, threw it on your doorstep, and told you it's your problem. Now that the cat stinks to high heaven he's gone to take a shower while you grab the tail and hold your nose.
November 23rd, 2006 at 8:44 pmSome Democrats DO own Iraq just and much as Bush. Kerry and Clinton to name just two.
November 26th, 2006 at 1:48 amJake,
I agree completely that various and sundry Dems are complicit. The big diff is that Republicans such as Mr. Shays eagerly and actively promoted this war with blind indifference. The fact of the matter is that before the invasion, to quote a fellow resident, "Saddam can't take a pee without our F-16's flying over his head". Shays response to this comment was a blank stare. Yes, some of the aforementioned Dems tacitly approved out of fear. But let's not forget who really started this mess. Truth is we all own this debacle now. Unfortunetly most are more concerned with a new playstation...Dan
