CNN’s John Roberts called the situation in Iraq an “absolute mess,” and said the media has “sanitized” their coverage of the violence. “The amount of death that’s on the streets of Baghdad for U.S. forces and for the Iraqi people is at an astronomical level,” Roberts said.
A draft of the Iraq Study Group’s report “urges an aggressive regional diplomatic initiative that includes direct talks with Iran and Syria but sets no timetables for a military withdrawal, according to officials who have seen all or parts of the document.”
Britain’s Defense Secretary said that UK troop levels in Iraq will be “significantly lower by a matter of thousands” at the end of next year. The UK currently has approximately 7,000 troops in Iraq.
Conservative congressional leaders are expected to punt the issue of completing spending bills to next year’s Congress rather than take the time to piece together the legislation, potentially the final act of the Do-Nothing Congress. “It could mean we would adjourn much earlier than most pundits think,” said one conservative Senate aide.
Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), one of the foremost social conservatives in the Senate, “is considering whether to stop blocking a judicial nominee over concerns her appearance at a lesbian commitment ceremony betrayed her legal views on gay marriage.” Judge Janet Neff has said she attended the wedding as a friend of one of the two women, a longtime neighbor.
This week, President Bush visits Estonia and attends a two-day NATO summit in Latvia, where he will press “alliance members to increase defense spending.” From Latvia, Bush “heads to Amman, Jordan, for two days of talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.”
The Washington Times reviews Defense Secretary nominee Robert Gates’ writings and reports him to “be more cautious and pragmatic than his predecessor, Mr. Rumsfeld, who has transformed the military and aggressively hunted al Qaeda members.”
And finally: The War on Peace Wreaths heats up. “A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.” “The peace sign has a lot of negativity associated with it,” said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. The homeowner said she won’t take the wreath down until after the holidays.
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section?
Scalia can go duck hunting with Cheney, but Judge Neff can’t attend a ceremony of cherished tradition. These “conservatives” are morons!

Unfortunately, pulling out our soldiers wouldn’t result in our government being able to give Americans a tax cut.
First, the money spent on Bush’s War is all borrowed funds, so ending the war merely reduces borrowing.
Second, the hundreds of billions of dollars borrowed for Bush’s War is not even part of the massive budget deficits! It’s been financed outside of the budget through supplemental authorizations. So ending Bush’s War won’t even shrink the deficit.

The UN Millennium Development Goals address global poverty and improving the lives of people not only in Iraq, but the world over. Agreed to in 2000 by every nation on earth, the UN Millennium Development Goals aim to curb global poverty, establish equality, provide primary education, and stop the spread of disease. All ideas that we take for granted in developed countries. These are lofty goals, but by no means unattainable. The Borgen Project (http://www.borgenproject.org) is an organization lobbying US political leaders to support legislation addressing the UN Millennium Development Goals and global poverty. November 27th, 2006 at 6:46 pmdlet, about your comment about Walmart…according to the book “The World is Flat: A brief history of the twenty first century” by Thomas Friedman…Walmart is certainly ruthless concerning its treatment of employees but the Chinese junk thing isn’t exactly true. What they did was pioneered a fantastically stream-line, state of the art supply chain and demanded the best prices from all of its suppliers.
Anyway, it’s a great book about, to put it in just a word, globalization. One comment the author makes loud and clear is that the Democratic party really needs to jump on new technology to make politics within the party better. It’s all about the ability to collaborate. By the way, in the Oxford dictionary of current language the second definition for “collaborate” is to betray one’s country by cooperating with the enemy.
November 27th, 2006 at 7:36 pmRobert, Michael Moore is a hero of mine. Children should be reading about him 50 years from now in history class. When the entire country was threatened by Bush, Cheney, Ari Fleisher, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN to support the Iraq war OR ELSE risk being labeled a traitor Michael Moore took them all on. Fahrenheit 9/11 was a challenge to every claim made by the liars and presented real factual information that the news networks chose to ignore. Michael Moore did the work that the network news was too cowardly to do. He laid the groundwork for future progressive documentary makers. The service Michael Moore did for this country cannot be underestimated. Every claim in his movie was backed up by 3 mainstream easily verifiable sources. Despite death threats by extremist right wing wack jobs Michael forged ahead. And in the end, Michael has been vindicated. He was correct in his opposition to the war.

November 27th, 2006 at 8:05 pmrobert, robert, robert, dragging up old news again?
I mean, really. That lawsuit was filed last June. It’s old news.
And why did the guy wait TWO YEARS before filing a lawsuit for “defamation and infliction of emotional distress?” You’d think if he were distressed over Fahrenheit 9/11 had have known about it a lot sooner.
Let’s face it, the guy gave NBC permission to use the footage. NBC sold the rights to Mr. Moore. It’s not like Moore had a secret camera and video taped the guy without his knowledge.
The only “truth” in your link, robert, is that the guy found a lawyer two years later who would file a lawsuit on his behalf. I’m sure if you looked for two years, you could find a lawyer to take on just about any case, especially if you paid him or her up front!
Personally, I’m wondering if the attorney involved got sanctioned for filing a frivolous lawsuit. I also wonder if this suit has the financial backing of any of the right-wing groups that financed the Paula Jones litigation against Clinton.
But keep us posted, robert, on how this thing turns out, will ya?

Just because NBC sold the rights to Moore does not give him the right to take statements out of context and twist them to meet his own agenda.

November 27th, 2006 at 9:53 pmSo, on what planet is Iraq located? International Copyright Laws cover Earth.
I do not know who is backing the suit. My question is, did he bother too read the Sgts side before declairing it frivolous? Things that need to be concidered are (1)the fact that the Sgt took steps to gain a simple apology (2) the Sgt was undergoing recovery from his wounds and (3) The Sgt fulfilling his military duties.
Keep in mind that this soldier was shown, out of context, denouncing the United States military action in Iraq and attacking President Bush. Both of these are chargable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So, Moore, for his own desires not only damaged this mans reputation but threatened his livelyhood.
Here is something else for you to read about your hero.
Michael Moore profiting off my husbands blood
My husband’s bloody image was used on Fahrenheit 911 on scene 22 on the DVD. Michael Moore took this very personal tragedy and used it without a care about our family having to see this awful image captured on film. I bet he doesn’t even know that this Marine survived and still proudly serves his country. This movie is against everything my husband believes in. He has pride in his country and despite his disability, he has no regrets in his service to our Nation. He is truly an inspiration to all who meet him. He will continue to serve just as long as he is allowed to. The footage of my husband is pretty graphic, It’s amazing he survived. Ironically it was the body armour that saved his life, the body armour that Kerry voted against. He lost his right eye, hearing in his right ear, loss of sense of smell and is legally blind in his left eye. He says “Our country is still at war and I will not leave the military without a fight.” I don’t think this is what Michael Moore was expecting to hear from this bloody injured Marine he used for quite the opposite effect. Kerry like Moore also used this same footage of my husband. He used it and implied that he knew the father of this injured serviceman and that the father told him he did not want his son to go to war. I can’t believe that the two people that we despise the most, happen to be the two people who used the blood of my husband for their own benifit. April wife of Cee-gar Marine

robert, robert, robert, that’s not what the story in your link said. And your article said absolutely nothing about asking for a simple apology before filing a $150 million lawsuit. Come to think of it, what lawyer would take a client who says “I just want an apology. If I get an apology, that’s all I care about….oh, and by the way, if I don’t get an apology, then I want to sue for 150 million dollars” and then goes out and tries to get just an apology?
and you have an interesting set of situational ethics. Tell me, how do you know Iraq has no copyright laws? You have just admitted on a public forum to purchasing, and possessing illegal copies of a copyrighted work. That’s a FEDERAL OFFENSE, knothead! (one which is most likely monitored by the NSA)
You have no problem breaking the law, if it suits your purpose. so much for supporting the “party of moral values.” you claim to be a christian? ever heard of the ten commandments? one of them is “thou shalt not steal.” by knowingly purchasing a bootleg copy, you knowingly stole. now go explain that to your god.
I hope Michale Moore sues you!!!
November 27th, 2006 at 11:49 pmKeep in mind that this soldier was shown, out of context, denouncing the United States military action in Iraq and attacking President Bush.
Comment by robert — November 27, 2006 @ 9:55 pm
You are showing some reading comprehension issues. The article is clear that the lawsuit alleges Michael Moore’s film “denounces the United States military action in Iraq” by attacking President Bush. It says nothing about the film portraying Sgt. Damon in that light at all.
Go back to the article and re-read it.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:09 am#69, When you buy movies in Iraq, as I did, it is pretty clear that they are bootleg. The U.S. Customs Office allows us to bring ONE copy back to the States with us. Therefore, if it is legal to buy in Iraq and legal to bring back to the States then where is the legal violation. Trust me, this issue was investigated at length by the Staff Judge Advocates office to ensure service members were not violating the law.
But you did show something here. You obviously have not read anything about the case other than maybe Michael Moore’s side. Try going back and looking at all the information before you call something a frivolous lawsuit. The Sgt tried to get an apology before hireing a lawyer. After being stonewalled, he decided to up the stakes in order to get that fat ass that wanted to use his image and words to at least recognize the mistake and misquote. As far as I know, Michael Moore still will not comment on the case. I guess he is above apologizing to soldiers. We are just there for his conveniance.
You want to say that Bush and Company are using this war to line their pockets, but so are “people” like Moore.
November 28th, 2006 at 8:40 am71 – robert, my source of information was the article you provided. Whether or not the soldier asked for an apology is irrelevent as to the merits of the lawsuit. Based on the facts in your link and my knowledge of the cause of action for defamation and infliction of emotional distress, the grounds for this lawsuit looks extremely thin. Like I said above, keep us posted.
Regarding the bootleg issue, can you show/link to any document where the U.S. government’s official policy is to allow anyone to bring in bootleg copies of material protected under domestic and/or international copyright?
