Dick Morris Accuses Nancy Pelosi Of Discriminating Against Women

Yesterday on Fox’s Hannity and Colmes, conservative pundit Dick Morris claimed incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) doesn’t support Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) to be chairwoman of the Intelligence Committee because Pelosi “doesn’t want a female competition. She doesn’t want two aggressive Democratic women congressmen in California.” When host Alan Colmes asked Morris if he was accusing Pelosi of gender discrimination, Morris said that accusing Pelosi of being “jealous of another woman in California” is “a fair thing.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/11/foxmorris.320.240.flv]

Morris made no mention of the multiple substantive disagreements between Pelosi and Harman. Instead, Morris was the latest media figure to attribute Pelosi’s differences with Harman to purely personal motives. Washington Post columnist Robert Novak recently described Harman as Pelosi’s “rival diva from California,” and New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd called the disagreement a “catfight between two strong-willed, expensively dressed Democratic pols married to California gazillionaires.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

MORRIS: Let’s understand why Pelosi is pushing Hastings. It’s a payoff to the Black Caucus, but it’s also because Jane Harman, a fellow California female Democratic congresswoman, is the next in line in seniority, and she doesn’t want a female competition. She doesn’t want two aggressive Democratic women congressmen in California, in case she runs for governor or something else. She doesn’t want the competition.

[SNIP]

COLMES: By the way, did you just accuse Nancy Pelosi of gender discrimination?

MORRIS: No, being jealous of another woman in California, which I think is a fair thing.

COLMES: Isn’t that gender discrimination?

MORRIS: Gender discrimination? I don’t know. I think that she likes to say she has California Democratic female politics covered.

Just the fact that the right wingers are cheering for Harman reinforces the fact that she is not right for America.

  3. Jeff says:

Harman was one of only 2 Democrats who knew Bush was and is spying on Americans without warrant and who chose to do nothing.

  4. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

Nice. Sexist comments from Novak. A “diva” is certainly a disparaging, sexist term and why does he so casually attach it to women who have achieved success and power?

  5. s says:

Hope Pelosi has done her homework and outlined all the various angles the wingnuts are going to use against her. We are going to see the full gamit of gender atrocities.

    1. She’s catty……a woman
    2. She’s power hungry……a woman
    3. She’s jealous……..a woman
    4. She can’t be trusted……..a woman
    4. Harmon and Pelosi couldn’t differ on substance……cause ….they’re women and women can’t think.

I just hope she has prepared mentally and emotionally because this country is counting on her to start turning things around. She cannot afford to let this swill distract her …..

  7. lw says:

It’s not Nancy Pelosi who has a problem with smart powerful women. This is known as “projecting”.

Attributing a disagreement between women who have political differences of opinion to a catfight between rivals is a nasty manifestation of sexual discrimination. I can only hope that most of the American public finds it as repugnant as I do.

Unfortunately, I look for more of this type of condescending attitude from folks who feel threatened by intelligent powerful women.

  9. Jim says:

This brand of so-called journalism, in which pundits speculate baselessly on the physchological motives of political figures (usually Democrats), is thoroughly obnoxious.

  10. slappymagoo says:

Distort the issues. Don’t cite facts. Try to divide in order to conquer. Don’t focus on any one distraction for too long, lest people start to realize it’s a distraction. Do your best to stop the public from thinking about what’s really happening in the world. Because the less you let people think, the easier it is to convince them to let you think FOR them. THAT’S the REPUBLICAN WAY!

  11. Wayne says:

Pelosi doesn’t like Harman because she is a female Lieberman.
Thr right wing talking heads like her for that reason.
Here are a few of her insane, Bush sucking up quotes:

On Colin Powell’s U.N. speech: “I happen to know that our intelligence agencies made absolutely certain that it was totally accurate, and that anything put out there had been reviewed 100 times to make sure it was accurate.” (Fox News, Big Story with John Gibson, 2/6/03)

On Saddam Hussein’s WMDs: “There’s a strong intelligence case that Iraq has not destroyed its weapons of mass destruction and is building the capability to use them.” (Washington Post, 1/30/03)

On the Iraq-al Qaeda connection: “There’s a growing al Qaeda presence in Iraq, and I think the case can be made that there is a growing affiliation [between the two.]” (Washington Post, 1/30/03)

On victory in Iraq: “[V]ictory will mean displaying for the world the evidence of weapons of mass destruction, and the horrors and torture of a generation of abuse by this dictator and then rebuilding the country with a multi-national coalition, and the emergence of an indigenous, transparent, moderate, democratic regime in Iraq run by the people of Iraq for them. I think that that will be a marvelous victory.” (CNN, Larry King Live, 3/19/03)

On the NSA domestic surveillance program: “I believe the program is essential to US national security and that disclosure has damaged critical intelligence capabilities. . . . Due to its sensitive nature, I have been barred from discussing any aspect of this program. . . .[However] I am deeply concerned by reports that this program in fact goes far beyond the measures to target Al Qaeda[.]” (Harman press release, 12/21/05)

On the leak to the New York Times which revealed the program’s questionable operations: “I deplore that leak. . . I think it is tragic that a lot of our capability is now across the pages of the newspapers.” (NBC, Meet the Press, 2/12/06)

  14. Tballou says:

I think your characterization of Dowd’s line (a “catfight between two strong-willed, expensively dressed Democratic pols married to California gazillionaires.” ) is not fair. She is notorius for her exceedingly dry humor, and this is one line about Pelosi and Harman in an otherwise long and scathing attack on Bush’s handling of Iraq. You can call it a catfight, but I think Dowd and pretty much everyone else know it is much more.

  15. dlet says:

    What’s this guy’s name again? Oh yeah….Dick.

  19. Kevin says:

I see it a bit differently than you folks. If it has to be a Democrat that heads the Intelligence Committee, I would rather it be one that can get security clearance. Rep. Jane Harman from what I’ve read is the most senior Democrat on the committee. Am I wrong in thinking she would be the most logical choice to head the committee?

  20. veritas says:

Doesn’t Morris have something more newsworthy and credible to talk about? Apparently not. what a dick!

  21. Wayne says:

Am I wrong in thinking she would be the most logical choice to head the committee?– Kevin

I say you would be very wrong.

  23. Joefriday says:

I thought that Dick Morris was now selling womens shoes-whats he doing in politics again?

  24. Rebel In CA says:

What else did you expect him to say?

This guy was an adviser and ran the Clinton election campaign and was caught “toe-sucking”. Clinton would not get him out of the jam so he turned on Clinton.

Now that the Democrats are back in power, he is left out and desparately want to “suck toes” again.

  25. dlet says:

Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, along with the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Jane Harman, said emphatically yesterday that President Bush should continue his controversial terrorist wiretapping program.

Moments later, Russert asked Rep. Harman: “Do you think the program should be stopped?”

“No,” she responded. “I think the program should go on.”
The California Democrat also said that she “deplored” the leak to the New York Times that exposed the program in December.

Who would want this person at the Head of the Intelligence Committee? No spine to do stand up for what is right.

  26. mighty aphrodite says:

On topic: Dick Morris noted that Speakette Pelosi did not want another strong California Dem challenging her. I can understand why Pelosi would want money-launderer Alcee Hastings chairing the committee instead of Harmon. Harmon only makes Pelosi look weaker, more demure
and incapable of defending the country from enemies here and abroad…

Why is it such a huge deal to repubs when a dem is wealthy? The entire base of their party is wealthy!

The reason that those First Amendment Freedoms were reinstated was probably because there were people fought to get them back instead of rolling over and beleiving the government will do it for you. 37. CarolSoprano says:

Flaco, I hope you’re kidding because if you’re not we are all in big trouble. How dare you insinuate that a woman’s “monthly cycle” would have any bearing on her ability to make rational choices and govern in a rational manner? What are we living in, the 15th century? Where do you Neanderthals come from? And your comment about gays and spreading AIDS is just absolutely ludicrous, insulting and extremely bigoted.

If you want to talk about “rationality” and the ability to make rational choices, I would rather take 1,000 Pelosi’s (who is one of the most thoughtful, rational and wise people I have seen) than our current leaders, who couldn’t make a decision based on rational thought if their lives depended on it – remember, they get their directives from the Almighty so no rational thought required. And Bush makes his decisions based on “his gut” – what the hell is that about? It’s a joke.

#14 – I agree with you on your take regarding Maureen Dowd’s op-ed, but women are sometimes worse than men when it comes to denigrating women … we need to be very aware of our language, even if it’s not intended to be patronizing, condescending or insulting. The word “catfight” would never, never be used to describe a conflict between 2 men, and it marginalizes women and reduces them, again, as creatures purely driven by emotion and not rationality. I know a great number of women (myself included) who are plenty rational and thoughtful, and I know an equally great number of men who are very emotional and at times not very rational. To brand an entire gender with those kinds of disparaging terms just validates the incorrect stereotypes that we’ve tried so hard to overcome.

  40. Dumb_Fox says:

There’s also a small point that Harman may be under federal investigation for ties to AIPAC.

But surely the main issue is that Pelosi is be signalling that she’s not going to take any sh*t on Iraq. That’s why she backed Murtha, and it’s why she’s standing behind Hastings. It’s the most important issue on which the Dems need unity, and Pelosi will get it even if she has to back a couple of losing horses in the process.

    PMS: Poor Me Syndrome.
A malady currently being experienced by wingnuts across our great land.
It begins with a sense of worry about a pending election.
Some wingnuts actually break down, snort meth or make racist comments, just to distract themselves.
Others begin ranting loudly & incoherently to anyone who will listen.
Ultimately, this neurosis can lead to nail biting, lying, and even taking a fetal position when watching Fox News.
The only cure known is to have this poor, wretched imbecile begin speaking the truth.
    This can be extremely difficult.
Some never succeed, lying in dark bedrooms & writing gibberish in blogs.
Others actually do recuperate, but only by changing political parties.
If you know someone so afflicted, encourage them to get help. They will resist & may need an ‘intervention’.
We’ll look at some of the tactics practiced with PMS syndrome recovery in tomorrow’s blog.

  60. SKdeA says:

    From Wikipedia:
“A diva is a female opera singer, but now the term also refers to a popular female performer of non-operatic works. The term was originally used to describe a woman of rare, outstanding talent. The term derives from an ancient Italian word meaning “goddess”, which, in turn derives from the feminine form of a Latin word divus, meaning “divine one.”

The term sometimes carries a comical or negative connotation, implying that a pop star who labels herself a “diva” is arrogant, difficult to work with, high-maintenance, or demanding. In slang jargon, a woman may be referred to as a “diva”, suggesting that she thinks highly of herself, is demanding, or is especially dramatic. The term can also be used positively, however, to comment a woman’s talent, performance style, or stage presence, likening it to that of a famous and successful diva.”

So frankly, I don’t see anything negative in the description of diva – Nancy certainly strikes me as a demanding woman who thinks highly of herself, and has an appropriate sense of the drama of her situation.

    And yes, I am a diva too…

As for using “catfight” to describe a quarrel between two women, I sometimes wonder how this term came about in the first place. My own experience with real felines is that it is usually the Tom cats–not the females–who fight.

*******Dear For, Actually lunch was in Del Mar – Il Fornaio to be exact. (You weren’t looking for me to join you at Del Taco were you?)

#77 – “I have followed this rule ever since he (pretending to be a ’she’) made a political statement involving a deceased child. Not funny then, not funny now and no need to continue a ‘debate’ with the undebatible brain dead.” Comment by DRxJ
*******Dear DRJ – I have NEVER made a political statement about my deceased daughter – but why would your lie surprise me? My son was trying to be sweet and comforting when I had a “welling up” moment. Kids sometimes say the most unexpected things at just the right moment. You know what they say – “out of the mouths of babes”…..

#79 – “But how old are you, anyway? Have you ever heard of menopause? Pelosi is in her 60s and most likely not menstruating any more.” Comment by Lora
*******Dear Lora, Thank you – perhaps the Speakette can blame hot flashes for her plastic smile and fried brain….Hopefully by the time I reach her age, that discomfort will be a thing of the past! (Confidentially, the ONLY reason I use the term Speakette, is to denote the historical importance of the first woman Speaker of the House – a monumental acomplishment indeed!)

    comment by Mighty Hypocrite

In her mid-60s, Nancy Pelosi should be post-menopausal. I believe the hot flashes occur only when a woman is going through menopause, and those don’t happen to every woman, anyway. Considering the fact that Bush keeps on cutting funding for women’s health research and putting men who have no respect for women into positions dealing with women’s health and family planning, I doubt that cures for menopause-related problems will high on the agenda for the time being.
If you had true respect for the historic importance of the first female Speaker of the House, you would use the proper title for the post and not some silly term, which you undoubtedly find cute. (Psst–it isn’t, just like you.)

  86. Lora says:

    Ps. Mighty Hypocrite,
    What explains your fried brains?

  87. mighty aphrodite says:

Dear Lora, I really have to congratulate the Speakettes’ for her political savvy and determination. How else could a wealthy white woman receive the endorsement and ca$h of ‘Big” labour and not allow her vineyard employees to join the United Farm Workers??? Hypocrite…….

  88. mighty aphrodite says:

P.S. Lora, thank you for taking the time to correct my spelling errors. Your OCD meds don’t seem to be doing the trick, though……

I see that the fat bald sweaty one has had a bad day. He hopefully does not have a dog to kick when he gets home. I think a cat. What seems at odds with MA is that not one of the women that are replublican members of the House or Senate has attacked Nancy Pelosi. However, Lush, O’Lielly, Sludge, and Slannity have. MA do you like the show Battlestar Galitica?

  90. Lora says:

Sorry, Mighty Hypocrite, but I’m not on any kind of meds. Don’t make ridiculous assumptions, just as you did in another thread ignorantly ranting on that I never criticized Hitler, Stalin (wasn’t born yet in their times), Amin, Milosevic, etc. As usual, when you have no defense, like a silly GOPette or CONette, you twist and change the subject.
Ps . Who are the Speakettes? I thought there was only one Speaker of the House. Speakettes’(SIC) is the possessive form of the plural Speakettes; Speakette’s would be the correct possessive for a singular noun, though the term “Speakette” doesn’t actually exist in English. Still haven’t learned that much, have you, phony lawyerette?

  91. mighty aphrodite says:

Dear Lora – Your C-O-M-P-U-L-S-I-V-E desire to correct my spelling (and hastily committed grammatical errors) are appreciated. You seem to have another compulsion to demonstrate your intelligence to those who could care less……

You might try working on a sense of humour – - you may be the most humourous womyn among your guilt racked Progette friends….but you certainly demonstrate a very constipated demeanor here…..

    Joe,
I hope this doesn’t mean you want Mighty Aphid to be kicking a cat. I have a better idea. Right now there is a dead rat (undoubtedly killed by one of my cats) in my garden; I’d be very glad to give it to Mighty Hypocrite to take out her/his frustrations on.

There you go projecting again. How would you know if my friends are guilt-racked? You don’t, so please go Cheney yourself. I’m going out now for a while. So Toodle off.

  95. JPark says:

#12 Then you will vote for Feingold? Considering he is the least wealthy senator and you just made this about wealth you would be a hypocrite not to support my Senator.

  96. JPark says:

#19 What??? So, if a junior member were made head of the committee he/she would not have clearance??? What tiny little retarded world do you live in?

  97. JPark says:

#47 That one is a dude from Britain. Not a lawyer, not a woman, not American. That has been established. Not sure if it is even human.

    That bitch stood you up!?

  100. mighty aphrodite says:

Dear Zooette – Apparently our little friend For Truth was mixed up. I don’t know how she confused il Fornaio with DEL Taco……But leave it to her to keep a gift card for herself – wonder who on her Christmas list is going without???

  101. Prince Myshkin says:

    Dear Nancy:

Didn’t you know that the only people incapable of discriminating against women are white middle aged republican males?

Didn’t you know that women are incapable of thinking deeply about politics? [Let's take GWB and Pelosi for example...]

Didn’t you know that politics is a “man’s world”, and that you feeble-minded women should stick to putting on makeup and marrying gazillionaires? Oh, and bearing (male) children?

Perhaps actually treating Pelosi’s content rather than her smile or her marriages would be dangerously close to taking her seriously…!

  102. Lora says:

    bill C’s alter ego,
Mighty Aphrodette is one of the most persistent trolls here and one who admitted–perhaps inadvertently–last summer that he/she is actually a paid troll. Many of us, including myself, doubt that this creature is the lawyerette he/she claims to be. I think I was the first to point out that MA is probably not even a woman; several other posters have since expressed their agreement on that point. About the only thing I believe about MA’s references to her/his background is that he/she is partly Jewish; I can recognize this much as true because one side of my family is mostly Jewish.

  103. ForTruth says:

    MA,

I am a man. But I’m pretty sure you aren’t used to a guy like me.

  104. mighty aphrodite says:

Lora – I doubt you’re in any way connected as a “member of the tribe” – you have NO sense of humour which is a pre-requisite for being Jewish. I sarcastically noted I should be a paid troll as I enjoy playing here – but sarcasm spawned by the question preceding the comment left you in a a humourless void.

Bill, I play here from time-to-time as down time, appointments, schedules and delays permit. At times, I am rarely here – but then progs get lucky and I add just a pinch of spice to the site….Welcome!

*******Silly me! A guy wanting to use HIS Del Taco Gift Card….Of course, you’d HAVE to be a Prog man…….I apologize!!!! tee-hee!

  106. dyspeptic says:

Morris is a neanderthal and needs to be beaten with sticks until he goes back in his cave where he belongs. As long as he gets his cigars and in-call services, he should be perfectly happy there. Anybody who brings a microphone anywhere near him should be bitch-slapped.

Novack is one of the meanest, evilest SOBs on the planet. Some ronin prosecutor with a blameless past and no family, hence not vulnerable to Novak’s blackmail, needs to put that man in jail as he has long deserved. I say solitary confinement, no drugs, and a diet of nothing but water and spagetti-os cold from the can for the rest of his natural life. Novak is one of the few that starts to make me wish I believed in the death penalty. Human beings almost don’t come any more evil that that nasty bastard.

  107. ForTruth says:

    MA,

I accept your apology. And I still have my Del Taco gift card.

  108. Lora says:

I doubt you’re in any way connected as a “member of the tribe” – you have NO sense of humour which is a pre-requisite for being Jewish.
    Comment by Mightette Hypocrite

I didn’t say I identify myself as Jewish, because I was raised by a Shiksa (non-Jewish) mother and a WASP stepfather. I did say that one side of my family is mostly–not all-Jewish, and you can chose to believe that or not.
As for my sense of humor, in certain crowds it is quite famous, but it’s obviously lost on someone of your low level.
And don’t try to retract your statement about being a paid troll. No one who has observed your rants here for months believes you.

  109. Lora says:

    Ps. Mighty Aphidette,
Any comments now that your rants about Pelosi’s supposed mistreatment of the workers on her vineyard have been debunked?
    I thought not.
