Rush Limbaugh on the Middle East:

By Amanda Terkel on Nov 28th, 2006 at 1:57 pm

Rush Limbaugh on the Middle East:

“Let’s just have the civil wars and let the crumbs crumble and the cookie crumble where — because I’m fed up with this. … Fine, just blow the place up. Just let these natural forces take place over there instead of trying to stop them, instead of trying to use — I just — sometimes natural force is going to happen. You’re going to have to let it take place.”

Exactly what every progressive on this site said before Bush started this illegal war. We said “Iraq will fall to pieces if you only send 140,000 troops, but Bush did it anyway and every water carrying troll here said we were wrong. Turns out we were right, dead right.

  12. veritas says:

Rush Limbaugh is another very pedestrian media whore who uses pseudo religion as his cover. He’s been outted for what he is and no one in their right mind would ever spend one moment’s time listening to his evil drivel.

So, is he advocating we just leave? He was against that before he was for it.

What’s really getting him is the elections. That, and the fact his ratings are falling. People are just sick & tired of hearing the same blame game day after day after day after…

  27. Erroll says:

Perhaps Limbaugh is drawing upon his vast military experience to reach that less than felicitous comment. I suspect Limbaugh [and O'Reilly] may heve been blinded by the glare that that get when they they look at all their fantasy medals and citations that they received while imagining that they served their country in a place called Vietnam. All that wishful thinking can end up having a deleterious effect on one’s brain.

[...] And what does Rush say? “Just blow the place up.” [...]

  29. Willy says:

Stupid Rush. First he favors throwing gasoline on the fire of the Middle East, and when it blows up in his face then he wants to get the hell out of there. You broke it, you own it.

  30. Jake says:

I guess Rush would be fine with a Shia dominated Iraq, a sort of proxy state to Iran. I guess Rush would be fine with an occupied Labanon. I guess he’d be fine with an all out war between Arab states an Israel. What the hell, let’s have another civil war here. Bill O’Reilly will be Commander in Chief of the Culture Warriors and Rush can be waterboy.

  31. June says:

Rush, why do you hate our troops? Traitor… (see how that works)

  32. KRank says:

As some have pointed out, the logical extension of this rant is that Rush thinks we should pack up our military and go home, right? Surely, he doesn’t think we should keep our troops in the middle of a nloodbath when they’re not able to help the situation.

Or maybe this is just one of his “satirical riffs”. You know, maybe he’s joking. Isn’t that what these guys claim when they get called on their extremist tirades?

  33. wisedup says:

(inside that little pea brain…’my ratings are dropping,I better slide to the other side…) Waterboy is TOAST….goodbye………….

  34. Douglas G. says:

We still have troops in Bosnia for crying out loud.. Oh.. shhhh… It’s ok, cause Willie got us there.. And WHY?? Was milosavic murdering people like Saddam was doing?

This is all a freaking joke, we need to get our troops home, keep our BILLIONS in foriegn aid here in the United states, and aid our people here that have no place to live. Once we take care of matters at hime, should we even concern ourselves with anyone else. MY tax dollrs, from the money I earn to feed my family, should ONLY be used to better our country. Americans are the most giving people in the world. There are church/synagogue missions, outreaches, whatever that can help people in other countries that need medical help, disaster relief, whatever. keep our tax dolars here, get our troops here and take care of business here at home, before worrying about the rest of the damned world.

  35. Exley says:

One can understand Limbaugh’s frustration. The Iraqi people were handed a golden opportunity and gift by the U.S. and Coalition when we deposed Saddam. We gave the Iraqis every opportunity to create a democratic and civilized society following our overthrow of Saddam’s tyrannical rule. Rather than making the most of this opportunity, the Iraqis have instead seemingly chosen to indulge in the violent settling ancient ethnic, religious, and tribal grievances. If that is what they choose to do, the U.S. should withdraw our troops. You can lead the proverbial horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. We have done all we can for the Iraqis. The rest is up to them. I don’t believe U.S. troops should be kept in the middle of a civil war.

  36. ForTruth says:

Rush is big enough to be “on” the Middle East.

  37. powkat says:

Ah, Rush – don’t you love it when the right reverts to the old ‘nuke ‘em into glass’ argument. Next thing you know, we’ll be back to being pinkos (always one of my favorites).

Seriously Zooey, you really shouldn’t keep it in like that. You should let it out once in a great while, and let us know how you really feel!
    :-)~

  41. Exley says:

    #37 DRxJ,

Your posting presupposes that the Iraqi people were happy to be living under Saddam’s torturous and murderous rule….I don’t think you mean that, do you?

Moreover, I don’t believe in staying the course. I say quite clearly in my posting that U.S. troops should not be kept in the middle of a civil war and shouldbe withdrawn. It is up to the Iraqi people now to decide what kind of nation they want to build.

  42. JaneESchneider says:

Hey, Exley! You know I hate to disagree with you, but in this case I really have to (and mine’ll be the kindest of the responses you get to your comment.) While I believe that the Iraqi people are happy that Saddam is gone, what we have left them with now is a completely broken and ruined country. To say that “we have done all we can for the Iraqis” makes it sound as though the US has actually improved their lives in some way. C’mon, they’re finding dozens of bodies every day in Baghdad. At least tens of thousands of civilians have been killed in horrible ways. How can anyone look at a funeral service for 200 people (!!) and not feel outrage, horror, basic human sympathy? This “opportunity” has ruined their country and we have no right whatsoever to expect any gratitude from the Iraqis.

But you are right, our troops should NOT be kept in the middle of a civil war (which is one reason why the administration doesn’t want to CALL it a civil war.)

The Jets played pretty well, didn’t they? :-D

  43. DRxJ says:

Your posting presupposes that the Iraqi people were happy to be living under Saddam’s torturous and murderous rule….I don’t think you mean that, do you?
Tell you what, go ask any Iraqi in Bagdad whom they prefer. Saddam, or us. Don’t be surprised by the answer. A recent poll showed a majority of Iraqis prefer pre US invasion days

and why the heck does my post keep appearing and disappearing?

  49. Exley says:

#46 Hey Jane….Good to hear from you. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I know you will (partially) disgaree with me. But at least you make reasonable, well-written arguments (as opposed to the childishness of some Idahoan, who shall remain nameless! :))

I understand what you are saying. Conditions are indeed terrible in Iraq now. But the fact of the matter is the vast majority of the horrors you accurately describe is the result of Iraqi-on-Iraqi violence.

“To say that “we have done all we can for the Iraqis” makes it sound as though the US has actually improved their lives in some way.”

If the Iraqis — starting with the Baathist insurgents and now spread to Shia, as well as Sunni, militais — had not decided to sabotage the U.S.-led rebuilding and economic rebuilding efforts following the deposing of Saddam, Iraqis lives (economic, security, politically) would be vastly imporoved. Any lack of progress in rebuilding Iraq following decades of neglect and pillage by Saddam Hussein lies squarely with the insurgents and Al Qaeda, not the United States.

“C’mon, they’re finding dozens of bodies every day in Baghdad. At least tens of thousands of civilians have been killed in horrible ways. How can anyone look at a funeral service for 200 people (!!) and not feel outrage, horror, basic human sympathy?”

Again, Jane, who are the people who are killing those dozens of people you reference? Who is setting off car bombs is open air markets, employment lines, and mosques? Not the United States…No, those atrocities are being carried out by Shia Iraqis against Sunni Iraqi and vice versa.

It did not have to be that way. The Iraqi people were liberated from a brutal and monstrous dictator and the U.S. pumped billions of dollars into that country to help make it a economically and politically strong and secure democracy. But instead of seizing that opportunity, the Iraqis chose to indulge in senseless religious and ethnic slaughter among eachother. They have – to date – failed their nation and their children. The U.S. and Coalition gave them every opportunity and assistance to help them create a better society for themselves. They have squandered those opportunities and assistance. Time for the U.S. troops to leave Iraq. Not one American life should eb lost because some Sunni Iraqi thinks his way of worshipping is superior to some Shia Iraqi’s.

  50. Exley says:

  59. JaneESchneider says:

Exley, while I realize that it is not the US or our soldiers who are commiting these atrocities (with few exceptions), do you believe that the current chaos/civil war would have ensued had the Bush administration planned for the aftermath of toppling Saddam? Hell, they didn’t even plan how to keep security in Baghdad enough to prevent looting!

  60. dlet says:

    Exley,
I think what you fail to realize in your reasoning of the invasion and occupation of Iraq is that it is an invasion and occupation. You say that the Iraqi groups (Baathist, Sunni, Shia, etc.) should have helped the US in improving hte country after we bombed it into the stone age during the shock and awe period. Did you ever see the movie Red Dawn? Did you get that feel good feeling when you saw those kids shooting those commies that invaded our country? If you did, well, that would be about how they perceive Iraqis that kill the American invaders. These people were invaded. To expect them to fall to their knees thanking us and working hand in hand with us is about as shortsighted as you can get.

  61. Exley says:

    #64 Jane,

Honestly, seeing what has happened in Iraq over the last three years since Saddam was deposed, I don’t know if any amount of U.S. troops (250,000; 500,000) would have or could have prevented the sectarian violence and civil war that has broken out over there…But the fact is, Jane, that no one is forcing the Sunnis and Shias to go to war with one another. This is a tragic choice that they are making. Are the only two possibilities for Iraq a bloody civil war or a the totalitarian leadership of a murderous and genocidal strongman, like Saddam??? Before the war, that seemed unfathomable to me. But now, seeing what has transpired, it seems to be a valid question.

  62. Exley says:

    #64 Dlet,

Not to simplify things, but there are “good” invasions and occupations and there are “bad” invasions and occupations. Some invasions and occupations are aimed at destroying feedoms, annexing territory, an creating dictatorships (i.e. Nazi occupation of France, Poland, and the rest of Europe; the fictional “Red Dawn” occupation of the U.S. (terrible movie, by the way, even though I like Milius).

Other invasions and occupations are beneficial in nature (the invasion of Normandy and liberation of France in World War II; the occupation of Japan after WWII). Those invasions and occupations were designed to liberate, rebuild, and democratize. And they were successful.

The goals of the invasion and occupation of Iraq were of the latter type. To fight against the former type of occupation (such as the Free French) is noble. To fight against the latter type of occupation is simply to restore the status quo of dictatorship.

You don’t equate the car-bombers of the Iraqi insurgency blowing up mosques and markets and killing civilians with the Free French, do you?

  63. RUCerious says:

Here’s a much much better idea. Rush should be conscripted into the Marine Corps. Point dummy would be a good job for this washed up bassgag.

  67. RUCerious says:

Exley, Those invasions and occupations were designed to liberate, rebuild, and democratize. And they were successful.

The goals of the invasion and occupation of Iraq were of the latter type.
    No.
The prior invasions were to kick the Axis butt and retake conquered territory. The goals of the Iraq debacle were neocon hubris gratification and oil, permananent presence in the ME.
    Get it right, will you?
Oh, yeah and the Jets really are pathetic this year.

  68. JaneESchneider says:

Hey, Ren, sorry, but it’s the only thing that Exley and I actually have in common and agree on, I was just trying to be nice. In my opinion, as long as the whole thread doesn’t get hijacked, a little off-topic back-and-forth can be healthy! Battlestar Galactica, eh? Wayne and I love sci-fi.

I would say and invasion based on lies is a bad invasion and ended up being a bad occupation.

Also occupations where the people were tortured and white phospherous was dropped on civillians, melting the skin off children makes it a bad occupation. People do not take kindly to their children’s skin being melted off. That kind of crap only fuels insurgency.

Iraq is one of those “bad” invasions and occupations, definately

  89. Exley says:

#74 Jane….Well, the Jets are not the ONLY thing we agree on…Don’t forget our Mets! I agree with you, Jane…I think it is healthy to point out sometimes that even those who disagree politically can have some other things in common. I suppose it reminds us all that we are all “regular people” at the end of the day.

As for Galactica, when I was a kid, I loved the original Lorne Greene, Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch show….Was excited at first by the Sci-Fi Channel remake. But then my interest waned when I realized the producers didn’t really have any idea of where to go with the plot.

  90. Tank says:

I hate to say this but he wasnt that monstrous or people would have revolted like they are doing now.

    Like what ?
You mean like the revolts in the Kurdish north that resulted in the type of retaliatory action from the Baath party that required the previous US invasion (no not the 1991 one) to prevent genocide in the Kurdish provinces and others in the Shi’a south that resulted in the mass executions that Saddam has been on trial for ? Something like that ?

Yeah why not give us some historical perspective on this figure when you can’t even recall his trial for executing civilians in response to such a rebellion made worldwide news only 3 weeks ago.

So, its pretty much US fault all those deads. One question, why the first thing US troops did was seizing the Oil MInistry while the whole city was left to the plunderers? Doesnt ring a bell? Oh, you pumped billions? Something is pumping, buddy, you are right about that.

Why are you asking him ? This was Pentagon policy which was challenged by the CPA at the time and reaffirmed by the Pentagon as being unbending as it was based on a core principle of the occupation. Was *their* explanation for why *their* policy which resulted in *their* actions not reliable enough that you had to turn to this guy for an explanation ?

“and why the heck does my post keep appearing and disappearing?”

Because people keep making candy corn. God Damnit!!!

  94. Exley says:

#89…Wayne, This “white phoshorous used on civilains” myth has already been put to bed on this site. You need to get some new talking points.

Yeah, tank, whatever makes you happy.

Didn’t beleive those corroborating this account in an hour long PBS documentary less than a month ago so you’ve turned to this guy for a 2nd opinion ?

I have no idea what you are talking about. Most of us, non-US citizens get our info from non-US media, which means we are better informed (who would have thought?), so at first, the excuse for the invasion were the never-ever-found WMD´s, then it was the 9/11 ambiguous conection, then the goodness to the world that Saddam was being removed (which was supported by US earlier), then whatever makes you happy excuse. You can believe anything you want, its your right.

    WTF is this moron smoking?!

  98. Ego Sum says:

What a pig! So he advocates for years with the USA declaring wars here and there in the ME, and now is a problem expontaneously born. “Trying to stop them”??? The USA has been lighting fires for years there.

eah, tank, whatever makes you happy.

Does this story not quote Rush summarising the policy proposed by Thinkprogress ?

That was odd. Suggesting you were well informed as a way to avoid acknowledging you weren’t aware of anything I just told you.

Again, it doesn’t make me happy to have to point out to you that you are wrong. It just makes you unhappy. It’s a matter of perspective you’re failing to appreciate.
Just like replying without addressing the points made doesn’t make anyone but you look like you are afraid to face reality.
