We’re going to try and devise some new strategies, hopefully with the President’s concurrence…Our soldiers, sailors and airmen should not be in there, risking their lives, losing their lives to stop a Civil War.” — Sen. John Warner (R-VA), once one of the staunchest supporters of the administration’s Iraq policy, speaking today in Charlottsville, Virginia.

Hey Senator while you are at it, why don’t you rescind the “Warner Act”; the one where you authorized the President to put troops on the streets of the USA in case of public unrest.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:45 pmWarner knows of those now-infamous words of GWB’s….that when “civil war” breaks out in Iraq, we will immediately remove ourtroops from harm’s way” doesn’t he? Now it’s time to put the integrity of our patriotism on that promise….because that’s precisely where they are - they’ve become “caught in the crossfire” and “targets themselves”. Time to get them out of harm’s way, as the pres said some time ago. Hopefully, his level of senile dementia still permits a relatively “short term memory”??
November 28th, 2006 at 4:52 pm#7 Thanks for reminding me.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:53 pmBush seized this unprecedented power on the very same day that he signed the equally odious Military Commissions Act of 2006. In a sense, the two laws complement one another. One allows for torture and detention abroad, while the other seeks to enforce acquiescence at home, preparing to order the military onto the streets of America.
And if the Warner Act is not rescinded, the people will definitely be out in the streets soon.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:53 pm“Public unrest” is putting it gently. “Public outrage” is more descriptive these days. People want answers and they want them now; people want justice and they want it now. This level of corruption has gone on far too long.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:54 pmTell that to Bush.

Actually, I think our knuckle dragging cross dresser is refining Its recently stated theory that Democrats are opposed to Lieberman because the party is “embracing an anti-Semitic philosophy”. This is a very big and very wide smear, without any evidence to back it (and much evidence to the contrary), so It is working furiously to put together some kind of manifesto to justify this putrid nonsense.

November 28th, 2006 at 6:15 pmNor did the recent US veto against the condemnation of Israel’s ‘collateral damage’ attack last week catch any press behind the ‘electronic Berlin Wall’…. thanks for the Carter book tip.
On topic: calling this a civil war strips any plausible reason for this US adventure to be called anything other than a disaster with long lasting consequences. The figleaf that the puppet govt had of any legitimacy disappears when you use the civil war label. Not to mention that the prime minister was stoned by his own sect in Sadr City this weekend…
Bush is now posing that he is soliciting input - he has no position but ’stay the course’ now until James Baker tells him what to do next.

November 28th, 2006 at 9:41 pmKaty,
I did read the story. I don’t doubt that that incident happened either. But it’s like a conservative posting a story about a school being built and getting everyone saying how great things are there. Yes schools do get built and medical treatment gets to some who need it, but life is not rosy.
Yes there are beheadings, there are groups of thugs who run around and force their will on others. Saddam was doing the same crap when he ran the joint so nothing has really changed except who’s getting killed and tortured (It’s more even sided now).
November 28th, 2006 at 9:44 pmNothing has changed Tundra? Can you honestly say that? I am astounded.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:47 pmReally just more people are involved now. Saddam use to have a lock on all torture. The market has opened and more people are able to take part in this tradition.

November 28th, 2006 at 9:51 pmSo, Tundra, exponentially more people are being tortured and burned alive. That doesn’t sound like nothing has changed to me.

November 28th, 2006 at 10:08 pmJPark,
Personally I didn’t care then and I still don’t care now. I know, I know, how could I.
I didn’t want the war, whatever reason you handed me I didn’t want us to go. Saying now though, There is torture see what we did is nieve. I could link you hundreds of articles from around the time of the war when 80% of the population was behind it. Detailing how evil the man was. Personally I felt if they wanted it to stop, they would have stopped it themselves.
They are killing each other over there because they are a different religion. It’s been happening for hundreds of years, in hundreds of years it will still be happening.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:12 pmOk, Tundra, fair enough. You want us to butt out. We agree on that. I just wish we would have done that before.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:20 pmBut Tundra, somehow I think that somebody could come up with quotes by you that were supportive of Bush’s war. Am I wrong?

I was of the mindset, until very recently that we broke it we have to fix it. I have came to the realization that we can’t, they don’t want it fixed. It was broke before we got there (this time). The little groups there all want to be fully in charge. They have lived under a dictator so long, that they don’t know how to act without one ruling with an iron fist.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:27 pmBut Tundra, somehow I think that somebody could come up with quotes by you that were supportive of Bush’s war. Am I wrong?
Comment by JPark — November 28, 2006 @ 10:21 pm
Yes!
I was always against going, that will never change. The part that did change was I felt since we broke it, we had to remain and help get it under control. Now I no longer care what happens over there and risking one more American soldiers life for the lot of them is too many.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:30 pmah crap I posted without my link - anyhow google ‘iraq us soldiers youtube water children’ for an interesting counterpoint to all the schoolbuilding and sweet throwing you see on US TV. Not all US soldiers are saints…

November 28th, 2006 at 10:40 pmBush Adviser’s Memo Cites Doubts About Iraqi Leader
WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 — A classified memorandum by President Bush’s national security adviser expressed serious doubts about whether Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki had the capacity to control the sectarian violence in Iraq and recommended that the United States take new steps to strengthen the Iraqi leader’s position.
The Nov. 8 memo was prepared for Mr. Bush and his top deputies by Stephen J. Hadley, the national security adviser, and senior aides on the staff of the National Security Council after a trip by Mr. Hadley to Baghdad.
The memo suggests that if Mr. Maliki fails to carry out a series of specified steps, it may ultimately be necessary to press him to reconfigure his parliamentary bloc, a step the United States could support by providing “monetary support to moderate groups,†and by sending thousands of additional American troops to Baghdad to make up for what the document suggests is a current shortage of Iraqi forces.
