#1 - AshenShard,
IMHO, all Hell is about to break out. When the leader of the sole superpower on Earth can not summon an “ally” to a meeting, Iraq is about to fracture on religious lines, Syria & Iran care about the Shiite majority, Saudis are on edge about their Sunni kin and Turkey is very concerned about the Kurdish north; something has to break. It seems that a regional war is in the making and US forces will be left in the middle of the collapse. W will have to stop swaggering and start staggering as the war he started and failed to finish collapses into chaos.
I think you’re right Walt. This thing has had stink-burger written all over it from the very begining. The fact that this meeting fell through shows just how much the chaos is increasing. We appear headed for a massive meltdown.
This administration would not allow anything like that to happen. If Saddam comes back to power it will be through a surge of Baathist insurgents backed by Iranian arms who take over Iraq and ‘liberate’ Saddam from his prison. However, Saddam would never be the strong man ever again. Either he would be used as a figure head or whoever has since gone up the Baath ladder of power will take the reigns and lead the country openly.
I agree with 11… if all hell breaks loose, as it looks like it will at any minute, then US troops could be vaporized. Especially when the GZ goes. Too late for Lawyers, Guns and Money…
I don’t think Bush will ever exchange his swagger for a stagger. He’ll claim this is all going according to plan, and that this is only a hiccup in what will eventually become a peaceful middleeast.
All that we see in the Middle East is what Pres Bush has inadvertently done in response to the horrific attacks of 9/11.
Is the burgeoning Shiite fundamentalist state in Iraq an appropriate response to the horrific attacks of 9/11 wherein nearly 3000 people died ghastly deaths (e.g. throats slit) and tens of billions of dollars in damage were incurred?
Is an approaching internecine war in the Middle East an appropriate response to the horrific attacks of 9/11 wherein nearly 3000 people died ghastly deaths (e.g. throats slit) and tens of billions of dollars in damage were incurred?
9/11 = 3000 ghastly murders + tens of billions of dollars in damage
Iraq = Tens of thousands of lives lost and ruined + $400 billion
Not only will the US troops be asked to leave, they will be chased out of there. We better start planning an orderly evacuation now, or there will be a replay of Hanoi with people scrambling up to the helecopters on the roof.

The baathist (Sunni) insurgents are certainly not going to be supported by Iranians (Shia). Sadr will be the new “strongman.” Just hard to know who’s going to really install him. Iran? Or the U.S.?

Good point. Though stranger things have happened. Though with a little tweaking, my scenario is possible. Would likely be a Saudi/US backing of a Baathist resurgence … if not, then just Sunni in general. Iran will back Sadr. Then it is either a somewhat shaky split of Iraq, or all out Civil War with two major sides in the conflict. And is there any reason to think Turkey would not invade the Kurdish region of Iraq?
#31 - AshenShard,
This whole affair has been a dogma driven hornet’s nest since W was so utterly stupid as to say: â€I’d say, bring em on.â€. Horse operas and diplomacy do not share a common venue, and W is scared shitless by horses to whit.
Turkey will not invade the kurdish regions, but they might “secure their border” on Iraqi soil. They are still begging to be taken into the EU and an all out aggression against the Kurds would ruin even the slight chance they have.
#32 - Bill C`s alter ego,
Our hunting culture would make an invasion of the US a disaster for an invader. Currently, we are killing each other, an invasion force would simply offer a more alluring target. This is not an endorsement of the NRA! I know about a hundred crossbow owners who would enjoy nothing more then picking off a few enemy from a tree blind with that silent killer.
anyone else think a coup is going to take place in Iraq soon? or am I being too pessimistic?
November 29th, 2006 at 1:27 pmPoor George, all dressed up and no functioning government to jerk around.

There can’t be a coup in Iraq…there’s no government to overthrow.
November 29th, 2006 at 1:47 pmToo late, guys. al-Sadr already called your bluff.

November 29th, 2006 at 1:48 pm#1 Yup! And the US military is going to be asked to leave, very soon. Dictatorship comes next. I’m serious.
November 29th, 2006 at 1:49 pmI have a feeling after all is said and done, Saddam will be pardoned come January and put in charge. 3000 lives and $350 Billion wasted
November 29th, 2006 at 1:52 pmMan, just when you think the situation couldn’t get any worse, more absurd or humiliating for the Bush administration…it does.
November 29th, 2006 at 1:52 pmFasten your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen, the ride is going to get a bit rough.

November 29th, 2006 at 2:03 pmPerhaps Bush could spend the extra day biking in Baghdad. After all everything is just fine in Iraq.
