Right-Wing Attack On Pelosi Over ‘Union Hypocrisy’ Systematically Debunked

House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has made passing critical labor reforms, like raising the minimum wage and enacting the Employee Free Choice Act, a priority for the 110th Congress. To distract from that effort, right-wing media outlets are now engaged in an effort to tar Pelosi as anti-worker.

The conservative claim, initiated by Hoover Institution fellow Peter Schweizer, is that Pelosi and her husband are guilty of hypocrisy over workers’ rights because they own a vineyard in Napa Valley that is non-union. The claim has filtered up through the blogs to Fox News and conservative print outlets like Investor’s Business Daily.

Last night, the ABC News affiliate in San Francisco filed an investigative report that systematically debunks the charge. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/11/pelosiunion.320.240.flv]

Here are the key facts:

1) Pelosi treats her workers better than unionized vineyard workers. “The Pelosis pay more than union workers are paid in the same valley — that from the pastor at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, a well known advocate for farm workers who’s involved in labor negotiations with the same labor manager the Pelosis use. … Monsignor Brenkle says the Pelosis pay a $1.25 an hour more than workers at Napa’s biggest union winery. … Of the more than 300 vineyards, fewer than four are union, and most of the farm workers in the Napa Valley get paid better.”

2) Pelosi is prohibited by law from helping her workers unionize. If Pelosi wanted to have union workers, “she could not ask the union for a contract. It’s illegal and has been since 1975.” Marc Grossman of the United Farm Workers Union explains: “It is patently illegal for any grower to even discuss a union contract, which is the only way you can supply union workers, without the workers first having voted in a state conducted secret ballot election.”

An ABC News reporter asked Peter Schweizer “if he had researched those facts before he called Pelosi a hypocrite.” Schweitzer responded, “It’s not my responsibility to go and find out how every single particular circumstance is handled on the Pelosi vineyard.” Why burden yourself with the facts?

What exactly has the Hoover Insitute been right about? And to think they're a "think tank" located on the farm at Stanford. It's enough to make one suspect that they're not really a think tank after all, but an organization of partisan hacks shilling for corporate power.

Go back and read the whole thing, michael. Read it slowly. If you need someone to explain it to you, don't be afraid to ask for help. Pay close attention to the parts that mention: "the Pelosis pay a $1.25 an hour more than workers at Napa’s biggest union winery" and "Of the more than 300 vineyards, fewer than four are union" and "Pelosi is prohibited by law from helping her workers unionize."

The unions are one of the lefts biggest constituants. On the one hand you agonize over WalMarts rejection of unions, even suggesting boycotts. Your party is done, ruined and flushed. All of your presidential hopefuls are out in the street come January, and your president is going to be indicted before '07 is out. And Pelosi will be the engine, so keep up the lies. We can smell the fear all over you, and your embarrassment at being a coddler of criminals, psychopaths and pedophiles. You and yours have done more long-term damage to the USA than Osama could have wished in his wildest dreams.

  31. michael Says:

    From Metroactive website:

"The exact number of both regular and migrant farm workers in Sonoma and Napa counties is unknown. The 2000 census showed that Latinos made up 23.7 percent and 17.3 percent of Napa and Sonoma counties' population, respectively. And few of the farm workers have health insurance, though again the numbers are sketchy. In Sonoma County, 60,000 people are estimated to be uninsured, but experts have called that number low, and no one knows how many are farm workers. Napa's Queen of the Valley Hospital estimated that 64 percent of Latinos in Napa County are uninsured."

So you better ask Pelosi what kind of health care she is providing her workers on top of that whopping $1.25/hr more she is paying them. This should be investigated!

  32. Aaron Says:

The email I sent to the Hoover Institute:

"...the Institution itself must constantly and dynamically point the road to peace, to personal freedom, and to the safeguards of the American system."

As I am sure you are aware, those words are from Herbert Hoover's statement of purpose for the Institution that bears his name. In the current political climate--heavy with partisan infighting, media hyperbole, and questions about the course of American democracy--Hoover's charge serves as a clear-headed reminder of our duties as engaged citizens.

It's a reminder that Institution fellow Peter Schweizer seems to have forgotten. I watched Mr. Schweizer embarrass himself on ABC News as he responded to a just-discredited attack on incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The facts Schweizer presented in his book Liberal Hypocrisy suggest Ms. Pelosi is talking out of both sides of her mouth--accepting money from unions and supporting pro-worker legislation while not employing union workers at her own vineyard.

In fact, as ABC reported, it would be against the law for Pelosi to initiate a union on her property. Additionally, her employees enjoy better wages and benefits than the unionized workers in Napa Valley.

An ABC News reporter asked Schweizer “if he had researched those facts before he called Pelosi a hypocrite.” Schweitzer responded, “It’s not my responsibility to go and find out how every single particular circumstance is handled on the Pelosi vineyard.”

I'm am not writing to vent my anger about a character attack from a partisan opponent--I live in the early 21st century and have learned to take such challenges with a grain of salt, regardless of the political affiliation of the source.

I am writing out of dismay and sadness that an organization founded on the optimism and rationality of Hoover's above statement would grant Schweizer the title of fellow. Embarrassing oneself has become a common occurrence in today's Internet-driven 24-hour news cycle and cannot be avoided.

But in this case, Schweizer embarrassed your organization with his shoddy research and his cavalier attitude towards the facts.

    Regards,

Michael, your point is wrong. The Pelosis are paying more than union wages. They don't have to. What are they "probably" saving money on? Healthcare? Pensions? Workplace safety? If they're not giving the workers a fair shake, the workers can unionize. Why don't you go do the research and then come back and tell us something factual, rather than tell us what you think is "probably" happening only because you wish it were.

You're almost as fun as Daryll Mikey. After claiming that you 'read all of that' you state that the workers are getting $1.50 an hour more than union workers. If all business owners treated their workers as fairly as Pelosi seems to be doing, there would be no need for unions. Unfortunately, few business owners have the ethical standards that Speaker Pelosi does.

KEN reversed means that a fire has gone out of your life. A relationship or opportunity has ended, a door has closed, or a loss has been suffered. Two people have grown apart and has resulted in a painful pbreak. You are clinging to lost loves and failed relationships, causing your own heartaches by not letting go.

This Rune repeatedly comes up for MA, in the reversed position. She went all "oooga boooga" the first time I drew it. I think it hits a little too close to home for her. Sadly, it doesn't appear that she has done anything to change her situation.

  105. Al Says:

The fact is Peter Schweizer is right...the farm is non-union. Normally, the unions will be the first ones to tell you that wages are only part of the equation. Since when did a union feel that it's okay for some "unionable" business to be left alone?!? (I'm shocked, shocked!)

The large amount of time spent in the ABC "news" story on that it's illegal for Pelosi to solicit union workers is misleading. If you read the act, you'll learn that this just extends the non-farm rules to farm labor and the purpose of the rule is to prevent the employer from putting together thier own union or to sway opinion on which union representative to use. If she wanted to unionize, there are plenty of ways for her to approach it. Somehow the ABC report missed this and tries to make it seem like her hands are tied. Bullshit. (Oh, what a surprise.)

She is just using Wal-Mart tactics to keep the unions out. Whatever she says about paying a buck and quarter more per hour, I'm sure she really doesn't want the unions. Law or no law about interference, the union people aren't trying to get in there. For some reason that only Pelosi (and the other growers in the area) and the unions know, the unions are happy the way things are. The question is why is it stopping the unions here and almost never anywhere else?!?

Schweizer is right: she is a hypocrite.

  106. barfly Says:

Al, you've constructed a fine delusion. My complements.

  107. Jose Chung Says:

    Systematically Debunked, my ass!

Does she employ non-union workers in her vineyards? Yes or No?

The answer is no, correct? That she pays them more or treats "her workers better" is irrelevant. And point #2 is completely irrelevant.

Those points are irrelevant in her defense because she pressures other employers in other industries to use union workers.

And what about all the non-union workers in Pelosi's hotel and restaurants? Have those facts been "debunked" as well?

  108. mdhatter Says:

Once again, "michael" forces the question: when faced with the facts, is he willfully ignorant, or just stupid? Hard to say...

  111. Jeff Seemann Says:

THIS is what the businesses of our country SHOULD be doing!

The purpose of a union is to have an organization that will stand up for the worker and ensure a fair living wage and workers' rights, especially in the face of an employer who will not guarantee any of the aforementioned needs.

When you have an employer who already provides such needs and rights, a union is NOT NECESSARY.

Note to GoOPers and employers....want to get rid of unions? Do what Nancy Pelosi does. Unions won't exist where there is no need for them to.

The trolls on this site are too stooopid to be real. Take the rant from Catlick Believer, for example - that has to be an intentional parody; no human being could possibly be that willing to display his or her idiocy so prominently in a public place.

We need another gadget, I fear, to sort out the true trolls from the fake ones - a Batshitcrazifibulometer, perhaps?

  115. Batocchio Says:

A great debunk. Schweizer is revealed as an utter fool and hack. I wish more local stations did this sort of thing.

  116. slappymagoo Says:

Peter Schweizer is a serial killer. He kills prostitutes and buries them in his wine cellar. He lures hoboes into his home with promises of soup and a hot bath then skins them, feeding the rest of the corpse to rabid pigs and using the skin to reupholster his sofa. He likes to dress in Victoria's Secret lingerie and pleasure himself to old videotapes of "Kids Incorporated." He's described World Series Events with the implied oral consent of Major League Baseball, but no express written consent.

Do I know any of this to be true? Hey, “It’s not my responsibility to go and find out how every single particular circumstance is handled in the Schweizer abbatoir, I mean, home.”

  117. Oyka Says:

I read all that. I just can’t hold back my amusement watching you lefties falling all over each other in your collective admiration over someone who is paying their workers $1.50 an hour more than union workers but at the same time she is probably saving thousands of dollars per person on union related expenses. The unions are one of the lefts biggest constituants. On the one hand you agonize over WalMarts rejection of unions, even suggesting boycotts. But when it comes to your beloved speaker to be, it’s quite alright. Hypocrites!

Everybody's right, you DO have some kind of reading comprehension problem. Of course, the issue is not only that she cannot help her workers unionize, but that the workers themselves have to elect for themselves via a state run ballot whether they want to unionize or not.

It is their choice whether to unionize and they have choosen not to unionize.

That simple fact by itself attests to how well paid and well treated these workers are (or consider themselves), when they decline the open opportunity to unionize. That sounds like happy workers to me!

  118. Oyka Says:

If you are not a christian,

You sir/maam are a commie pinko faggot. I wish we could just saw off the eastern seaboard and let it float out to sea.
If you aren`t a christian then what exactly are you.You serve no purpose on earth other than to wander aimlessly for the rest of your days.

Actually I'm a proud member of the western seaboard (West Side!!).

So.. If I'm not christian that my life has no meaning? If in my capacity as a non-Christian I feed the hungry, find a cure for cancer, help heal the sick, or somehow help my fellow man...if I'm not christian it would still mean that my life is without purpose.

I make my life's own meaning, I don't need a religion to make it so.

I'd also like to note that "sawing off" a piece of the Union - you know, that precious thing that Abraham Lincoln and thousands of patriotic northern Americans fought to preserve - and its advocacy is very unpatriotic.

Why do you hate the Union? Why do you hate America? Why do you hate fellow Americans?

    heh heh...

  119. Redleg Says:

This Schweizer dunce has also written deceiving hit-pieces on Al Gore about Al's environmental record. Schweizer got many of those pertinent facts wrong too.

Vinne, are you really this stupid in person or do you just play an idiot on the internets?

  120. Captain Bathrobe Says:

I strongly support the right of workers to join unions. Nevertheless, I do not believe that an employer has the responsibility to organize the union him or herself. That choice is up to the workers, not the management. If Pelosi's workers decide to attempt a unionization drive, as is their right, then Pelosi's response (i.e., acceptance vs. engaging in union busting tactics) will indicate whether or not she is being hypocritical on this issue.

This entire story is red herring, in any event. Pelosi exerts far more influence as a legislator than as a small employer in the Napa Valley. If she supports pro-labor legislation in her capacity as Speaker, then she may rightly be considered a friend of labor. If she promotes laws that sell workers down the river, then it doesn't matter how well she treats the people at her winery or if they belong to a union.

I have some hope that Pelosi will support laws favorable to workers; I have no hope whatsoever that the Repubs will do so.

[...] Here's a left-leaning critique of the comments by Peter Schweizer (author of Do As I Say, Not As I Do). Schweizer exposes the non-union status of business holdings of Pelosi eventhough she is a major union supporter and has received major donations from unions. Notice that even in the defense of her, the facts that her business holdings are non-union is not denied. http://thinkprogress.org/2006/11/29/pelosi-unions/ [...]
