As the world commemorates AIDS Day, leading Christian conservatives are pushing Congress to cut U.S. support for President Bush’s AIDS initiative. They are angry over the program’s promotion of condoms and its perceived lack of support for faith-based programs.

“Under heavy pressure from Democrats, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said the agency is abandoning its plans to relax rules forcing companies to annually report their toxic releases.” Sens. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) plan to “introduce a bill next week to block the rest of the planned changes to the Toxics Release Inventory.”

The Bush administration is considering “whether to abandon U.S. reconciliation efforts with Sunni insurgents and instead give priority to Shiites and Kurds.” The proposal, written by outgoing State Department counselor Philip D. Zelikow, “has met serious resistance from both U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and military commanders in Iraq.”

In the first revision to the U.S. citizenship test in 20 years, immigrants “will be assessed on their grasp of the nation’s ideals.” But civil rights advocates note that some of the questions are “just off the wall,” “unusual,” or “odd.” One sample question requires applicants to know the amount of the federal minimum wage ($5.15/hour).

Exxon wants its tax cuts. “Proposals by congressional Democrats to eliminate oil industry tax breaks and subsidies would set a bad example overseas and discourage new industry investments, Exxon Mobil’s top executive said Thursday.”

The White House opposes plans by European nations to require airlines to curb greenhouse gases, saying it would unfairly disadvantage U.S. carriers. “We are strongly opposed to the imposition of a tax. We think this will violate trade rules,” said James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Paperless electronic voting machines used throughout the country “‘cannot be made secure,’ according to draft recommendations issued this week by a federal agency that advises the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.” The agency recommended an “optical-scan” paper ballot system.

“Without notifying the public, federal agents for the past four years have assigned millions of international travelers, including Americans, computer-generated scores rating the risk they pose of being terrorists. … [C]ivil liberties lawyers, congressional aides and even law enforcement officers said they thought this system had been applied only to cargo.”

And finally: “The State Department uses diplomacy to connect and link the objectives and priorities of various countries.” Except on their website. “At the State Department’s ‘Web Site and E-Mail Addresses of Embassies,’ the following links are broken, expired or nonexistent: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Benin, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Denmark, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Fiji, Gabon, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Italy, Korea, Macedonia, Malawi, Malta, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkmenistan and Uruguay.”

    Exxon wants its tax cuts. “Proposals by congressional Democrats to eliminate oil industry tax breaks and subsidies would set a bad example overseas and discourage new industry investments, Exxon Mobil’s top executive said Thursday.”

    Exxon then said that preemptively attacking oil-rich countries, occupying them and then lessening their flow of oil sets a good example. Exxon then suggested further tax cuts for the oil companies to be paid for specifically by the poor, homeless, crippled and elderly.

    They must have a lousey PR division, because I haven’t heard of any new industry investments. From what I heard after Katrina, their refining capacity hasn’t changed in some 20+ years.

    And how many BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF PURE PROFIT did the oil industry make each quarter the last couple of years? How much of that has been reinvested in the industry? How much of it has gone to make the wealthy even wealthier?

    Good Morning all, OT….Caught a small clip on last night’s new’s that I don’t see here….It seem’s the immigration department has made a (small) error… of the 111,000 applications for citizenship 30,000 were approved, even though all the clearence paper work was lost before the approval’s were made..Then there was a note that one well known terrorest was in this group……Do you all feel safer now?….Gee’s….Are there any competent people working for us.? So much for homeland security you lieing peice of crap bush…….Blessings all, we need them

    NPR did a piece last night on the new citizenship test. They asked people on the street in lower Manhattan some of the questions. Most of the current citizens didn’t do well. They then asked one immigrant (though I don’t think he’s yet a citizen) the same questions & he popped off the answers quickly. Ex: 1. What is separation of powers? 2. Why do we have three branches of government. 3. What does separation of church and religion mean? 4. How can citizens particiapate in government?
    5. What does the Federal goverment have the authority to do that no one else can?

    Personally, I think that all citizens should get refresher courses in civics (assuming they even had any in school).

The standards that the Election Assistance Commission will adopt are voluntary, but most states require election officials to deploy voting systems that meet national or federal criteria.

    The report repeats the contention of the computer security community that “a single programmer could ‘rig’ a major election.”

    So, after the election fiasco of 2000, the Republicans gave us a totally insecure method of voting and put it in place for the 2002, 2004, and 2006 elections. And this system will still be in place for the 2008 Presidential election!

    I think it’s a good thing to make sure they know the Federal Minimum wage so they don’t get taken advantage of. Ya know some people would pay them less in cash.

Fine, repeal their outrageous subsidies now and we’ll revisit them if we ever find that Exxon and the gang aren’t able to turn a reasonable profit. I disagree with Tillerson, I think bringing back the windfall profits tax is a wonderful idea. Let’s take that money and invest in alternative energy research.

    Ya’ know, this may seem trivial, but this part is not real accurate. I tested the links in question and they all worked except for Gabon, Malawai, and Malta. There are no listed sites for their Embassies.

I’m all for subsidizing an industry that’s going away until the jobs can be converted to some other industry, but that’s not what they’re doing. They’re using the subsidies to stay in business. How much money do you think they’d raise if we had a “Oil Aid” concert?

    I have money invested in the United States Oil Fund and even I think that’s wrong.

    I think the update to the citizenship test is a great idea. Like Tundra said, they need to know the minimum wage so they do not get ripped off. They also need to understand why our government is set up the way it is and what their rights are.

    Chimpeach, these are different/difficult situations. Yes, they do happen, but with God that individual can survive in life. Remember Magic Johnson? He’s still alive and strong. Jesus puts each individual in a different situation in life. You have to learn how to trust in him for help. That being said, beside these situations you listed above, the promotion of condoms isn’t needed. Fornication will not be promoted in our society.

    Quadrajet, Yes, I was a Marine Officer. Anyway, abstinence needs to become successful. Instead of adding commecials promoting the utilization of condoms, how about adding a commercial promoting abstinence. Remember, it was society that categorized committing sin as a common way of life.

    I was just thinking that the defining character traits shared by all Republicans are a philosophy that the ends justify the means, great comfort with hypocrisy, and total aversion to either personal or institutional responsibility, but your post reminds me that a great capacity for illogic should also be included.

    Could it be that in countries where only al Jazeera and CNN are broadcast the only Americans they see are Democrats Dick Durbin and Ted Kennedy mindlessly slandering Americans and insisting that American servicemen are like the Nazis while leftist hosts such as Wolf Blitzer and Aaron Brown curry favor with the only people still watching CNN –– Europeans and terrorist dictators –– by spinning every story in the most hateful, anti-American way they can imagine?

    (Could it be because CNN’s policies are really only a continuation of the decade-long fraud they perpetrated on the public in a quid pro quo with Saddam Hussein where they intentionally covered up his atrocities in exchange for personal and professional favors?)

    Could it be because when people who were raised in closed societies where blood libels against the infidels are the norm –– and their indoctrination into this cult of hatred so assured that they can be “trusted” to go abroad to learn how to make bombs in chemistry classes in North Carolina and Colorado –– the Liberal American teachers tell them (and the rest of their class) that their hatred is justified and that the terrorists are doing the world a favor by burning alive three thousand “little Eichmans” in the World Trade Center?

    Could it be because when the leftists at the New York Times come across a story of a couple of night guards at a prison for suspected terrorists who, gasp, put panties on their enemies’ heads they run the story on their front page –– as if it were the second coming of the Holocaust –– for 44 straight days while a search of the Times’ website turns up not even a mention of the heroic American soldier who fought off an ambush, wounded the attempted killer and then provided him with emergency medical care?

    Ask yourself, Democrat, who feigns being dumbfounded at the hatred the world supposedly has for us, how much less would the world hate us if you stopped your anti-American lies, slanders and attacks? How much less would the world hate us if you stood up for America instead of lying to tear it down?

    Ask yourself Bruce Springsteen, how many fewer people would want to massacre Americans if you sang about how being born in the USA meant you could go from being a bus driver’s son to the rich and pampered multimillionaire father of a steeple chase champion all through a little effort and a couple of catchy tunes?

    How about if instead of lauding the communists of Cuba Robert Redford showed some gratitude to the nation that not only allows him to spew his moronic positions but to get filthy rich doing so?

    Ask yourself, Al Gore, how much less might the world “hate” us if, in some of your speeches — not all, maybe just one or two –– you called Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat or Kim Jung Il “Nazis” rather than always attacking your fellow Americans who dare to think lower taxes actually stimulate the economy as “digital brown shirts.”

    Ask yourself, Howard Dean, how much less the world would hate us if the very head of one of America’s national parties, “reserved judgment” on the Americans you viciously and lyingly slander rather than only “reserving judgment” (your words) on Osama Bin Ladin.

    Ask yourself at the New York Times (and the handful of people in America who still bother to read the rag) how much less would the world hate us if, instead of running the Abu Gharaib story for 44 straight days you ran it for, say, only 40 straight days and with the extra space mentioned, even once, that over 96 percent of the children in Iraq now have been inoculated against the most dreaded diseases in the world or that 4.3 million Iraqi children are now enrolled in primary schools?

    I don’t need to ask why the world supposedly hates us. I know why. It’s because the Democrats hate America and they control so much of the information that the rest of the world sees that all they can possibly do is hate America, too.

    In my neighborhood there was this huge outbreak of moms “breaking their backs,” and having to take pain medicine. Needless to say, the backs got better, but the moms were still flying. We kids enjoyed getting away with a lot of stuff after that. :)
