A more human and moral way to look at their mistakes was to recognize that the main one was invading a sovereign country that was of no threat to us, was not in the middle of a revolution, and was not violating international law.

We should have focused on Osama and left Iraq alone.

You can't maintain a level response to an adversary that constantly changes tactics and goals. When insurgents started trying to create a sectarian war, we should have added the troops required to keep the Sunnis and Shiites apart, which is exactly why the insurgents turned to creating a larger conflict that a mere 140000 US troops couldn't handle. We should have nipped the sectarian conflicts in the bud with overwhelming force, but we didn't add troops, and now it is beyond our ability contain, especially with Maliki refusing to act himself. I believe the anti-war rhetoric in this country made Bush hesitant to act in the manner he otherwise would have, if he had had full support - now they need to allow the country to divide itself, with the oil revenues staying with Sadr's Shiites ....
