Louisiana’s largest commercial insurance provider

“plans to cancel all its commercial property policies in the New Orleans area next year,” citing the slow reconstruction of the levee system. A leading economic development official said the decision has sent a “shock wave through the business community,” which “cannot exist” without insurance. First-Draft called it “disastrous to the recovery of New Orleans.” More at FireDogLake.

Katrina will easily rank as the worst natural disaster to strike the United States.
Both the hurricane itself and the pathetic response all our governments gave.

  2. Zooey says:

New Orleans is toast — again.

  3. veritas says:

Where’s 43??? Where was 43 when Katrina struck?? Up his own butt, I presume or gallavanting all around the world because he’s become a pariah in Washington??

  4. WaltTheMan says:

    #4 – veritas,
He thinks that he is the Pharaoh, notice the similarities – descended from the gods, God’s reprehensive on Earth, infallible, etc.

  5. LeisureGuy says:

Shouldn’t Karl Rove be asked about this in an interview? He is the guy in charge of the Gulf Coast Reconstruction—he accepted that responsibility directly from President Bush. What does Rove have to say about this new development, and what are his plans for the levee rebuilding?

You forgot that john Kerry grievously insulted our troops by misstating a joke, that the damn homos are getting married, and the damn peace wreaths!

    Hey, war is peace, man!

  8. Briseadh na Faire says:

“To keep future losses to a more acceptable level for continued financial stability, we are reducing our exposure in some of these areas by non-renewing a number of small to mid-sized commercial properties,

In other words, the property value of small businesses will plummet as they close up shop. But large corporations will remain unaffected.

The good news is, small business owners can’t file for unemployment insurance, thus this move will not increase unemployment!

  9. katy says:

another step closer to “disney orleans”…
    how very sad… sinful…

  10. Marie says:

Inablility to carry insurance will condemn New Orleans to death.
I didn’t think we could ever have something like our own Pompeii or Atlantis in our country, but thanks to Dumbya and his cronies, we have another reason to label him as the worse president in history.

  11. Marie says:

    Worst. Worst. Worst.
Yet he appears in public. He is not hit with cream pies, rotten tomatoes or rocks. He should be in fear of public appearances – he should be tarred and feathered before he is hanged.

  12. Evil Spaniard says:

Full capitalism on the march. And what would happen to all the personally responsible people who had a private insurance to help just in case of a flooding in Orleans? But hey, this will help the bussiness, isn’t? At least the one of the insurance company that wouldn’t pay…

  13. Evil Spaniard says:

BTW, this is what happens when there isn’t a strong enough government to force insurance companies to fulfill its promises…

  14. WaltTheMan says:

    #16 – Marie,
The Secret Service will never let W get within miles of a hostile situation. On top of that, he has the option of lifetime coverage. If you failed to notice, he did not have the balls to go to Baghdad on his last trip to the ME. He sends our servicemen and servicewomen there on a daily basis. Machoman?

  15. The Other National Anthem says:

To add on to 19, you notice how bush never visits the big cities? When he came to washington, where did he go? Very conservative Bellevue and some really small towns, not Seattle or Spokane etc.
The only big city he visits is New York, so he can continually milk 9/11 for all its worth

  16. HeartlandLiberal says:

I find it absolutely fascinating, and proof positive of the utter corruption of the mainstream media by corporations and the Bush administration, that they have simply ignored and continue to ignore a diaster of this magnitude. People, we lost AN ENTIRE FRIKKIN’ MAJOR AMERICAN CITY!

Of course, you’re right. The boy king has been protected in his little bubble for six years – acttually, he always had some sort of protective bubble around him all of his life. The useless, clueless bastard.
I was just daydreaming – what a lovely dream it would be to see W humiliated and then receiving full punishment for his crimes.
Yes, indeed, the chickenhawk-in-chief was too afraid to go to Baghdad, even with his protective bubble. It’s too dangerous there!
    Pathetic POS that he is.

    LOL
That’s a good marketing idea. Bush’s bubble bath.

  22. ItsJustKarma says:

That just shows You that the insurers surely believe in ‘Global Climate Change’. They believe that next year will bring back more of what New Orleans had seen in 2005. More hurricanes, more human tragedy and more incompetence. Probably or better surely paired with some nice profiteering…

    Yeah, comes in bloody red…

  24. The Other National Anthem says:

    Ok, G-dub, I see.
In fact, that explains a lot now…

  25. RUCerious says:

    #16 Marie –
Last night I had a vision of selling thousands, if not millions of George W. Bush Bust Anchors. Complete with hangman’s noose line.
Something like “Stay your course with a Bush Bust”!
Perhaps a plank with a trapdoor for the bow of the boat.

  26. RUCerious says:

    #20 OOUUCCHH!
He visited Medina, the richy enclave across the lake.
Bellevue isn’t so wealthy, nor conservative.

  27. sean sanes says:

Let me guess,BushCo and the insurance companies will buy up all of the New Orleans “properties”(or better yet swindle the govt. outta it),and convert the whole mess into free oilfields and revenue for him and his buddies.

  28. Marie says:

    #34,35,36 gbl
Very good ideas! Check out BnF on the Worst thread. Between all the ideas, there is enough material to start an on line company of Bush goods (or would they be called Bush bads?).

  29. The Other National Anthem says:

    #33:
You’re right. Forgive my error. I’m from Renton and I share a somewhat unnatural grudge with Bellevue, which is why I was so quick to pin them like I did.

  31. greggp says:

The GOP will spin this as:

“What’s the big deal? We already have the recipes for Cajun and Creole food, so do we really need New Orleans? Besides, the offshore oil platforms aren’t really affected by the levees anyway.”

  32. greggp says:

The Administration will spin this as:

“What’s the big deal? We don’t really need New Orleans, because plenty of people know how to play jazz, and we have all the recipes for Cajun and Creole food. We can produce music and food anywhere. Besides, the offshore oil platforms don’t depend on the levees at all.”

  33. The Other National Anthem says:

    #42:
The media will then launch into the “debate” raging on about whether or not a city gutted by a catastrophic disaster should, in fact, be rebuilt at all.
The Democrats claim that many people have lost their homes, their livelihood, their money, and any sense of stability. They also point to the historical importance of the site, and how we should never turn our backs on the unfortunate.
Some people say (if this is Fox News), however, that the Democrats are really just a bunch of whiny little pussies who can’t handle the microscopic loss of New Orleans. Besides, they say, we have the Cajun recipes and jazz already. And this will affect our oil profits.
And we’d like to ask you to vote in our internet poll: Do you think we should rebuild New Orleans, like the Democrats are insisting, or that New Orleans is useless to us now, as the Republicans suggest?

  34. The Other National Anthem says:

Up next, on the O’Reilly Factor, some unhinged far-leftisecularprogresssivascist sites have the audacity to suggest that the government did a horrible job reacting to New Orleans. How could they do such a thing to our Commander-and-Chief.
And later, I’ll have Michael Brown and Michael Chertoff in a double interview about how the Democrat Party is responsible for all this mess.
Then, on Hannity & Liberal to be Determined, Geraldo Rivera joins the crew as he reprimands himself for his journalism at the Superdome. Also, Joe Lieberman, Ann Coulter, and David Broder discuss how awful New Orleans was, and how its destruction was beneficial to the American economy.

  35. The Other National Anthem says:

Ditto for CNN, most of MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC, Disney, etc.

  36. Bienville says:

What’s being overlooked in this discussion is the reason stated by St. Paul’s for their action: the rebuilding of the levees is not progressing quickly enough.

The levees protecting New Orleans and the entire Mississippi River valley are the exclusive province of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. When last I checked, USACOE was a Federal agency. The fact that major insurers are abandoning New Orleans is a direct result of Federal inaction and incompetence.

  37. qkslvrwolf says:

Ok, I’m sorry, but the New Orleans needs to be scaled back. You should not try and fight mother nature and have practically an entire city below sea level on a coast that is hurricane prime even without global warming.

This is, unfortunately, an American attempt to best nature which is at best foolish and at worst stupid.

Let the crescent city become crescent shaped again. There is no reason to rebuild the parts that were under water.
