will “vote next week on whether to leave the U.S. church on ideological grounds and affiliate instead with a controversial Nigerian archbishop” who has advocated the imprisonment of gays.
Some members of the two Fairfax churches say they are comfortable with the arrangement because Minns is their “missionary bishop.” However, they know there are questions about a suburban Washington congregation technically under the leadership of Akinola, who has supported a new Nigerian law that penalizes gay activity, whether private or “a public show of same sex amorous relationship,” with jail time.
Jim Pierobon, a member of The Falls Church serving as a spokesman for both Fairfax churches, said he believes Akinola is trying to ease tensions between Nigerian Anglicans and Muslims by supporting the law. That doesn’t mean the leadership issue doesn’t weigh on Pierobon’s conscience.
So the Nigerian Anglicans are aligning themselves with Muslims – and against their own, gay adherents – to “ease tensions.” And their American counterparts in Falwell/Macaca country are giving tacit endorsement of jailing gays who violate their Muslim-placating ban on gay activity in Nigeria. What’s next? Endorsing other Muslim pratices like female sexual mutilation? What would Jesus say about throwing His sheep on the multi-cultural bonfire to “ease tensions” with Muslims?
“In one sense there is a sadness because this feels like a death,” said Mary Springmann, a soft-spoken stay-at-home mother who worships at Truro and plans to vote to split when a week of voting begins Sunday. “Like someone who has been gravely ill for a long time, you keep hoping there’s going to be a recovery. And at some point you realize it’s not going to happen. Right now . . . there is a feeling of hope and expectancy about where God is going to lead us next. It’s kind of exciting.”
Says the person that is being used by politically motivated people that want to control a large group of deity worshippers. It isn’t god that is leading them to split from a church it is men with ambitions.
You will never learn. The harder you push, the more you cause the acceptance of extreme positions.
The only thing “extreme” is religious faith. There is no “extreme atheism,” or “extreme agnosticism.” You either are, or you ain’t. Religious faith is another matter. Is this cow-towing to Muslims’ wishes, “walking the path of Jesus?”
Female Sexual Mutilation is not a Muslim practice. Like many things that Islam gets the blame for, burqas and such crap, it is a tribal practice that was in place before the adoption of Islam.
But you’re right that these xtianist would accept the dominion of this African bigot under these circumstances is sureal.
I have to agree with barfly. If you find your spiritual leadership is basing their exclusion of Christions on Muslim prejudices, and that’s ok with you, then become a Muslim! Why bother with an intermediary like Jesus who preaches love and acceptance? But if you can’t quite bring yourself to go straight for the jugular, join the Nigerian “Christians”. They’ll do it for you.
American churches that sink so low should identify themselves as “gone native”.
Wow, did any of you read throught he comments on the Wash Post article? There’s some literal loons on there. A black man stating that slavery is OK just so he doesn’t look like a hypocrite because the Bible is pro-slavery. There’s all kinds of denominational fighting and name calling. It’s really amazing how crazed religious folks get over two dudes gettin’ it on. I wish they cared as much about “sins” that actually affect society.
Good. Separate the wheat from the chaff.
December 4th, 2006 at 8:24 amAnd people wonder why I don’t believe in organized religion anymore?
December 4th, 2006 at 8:24 amI hope they don’t choose the Nigerian Archbishop. Again, only the Lord can judge us, not man.

So sayeth the man who constantly “bashes” homosexuals, and proclaims that they (”them there homos”) are going to HELL

December 4th, 2006 at 9:44 amIs this the same Nigerian ArchBishop who keeps sending me emails telling me I can inherit 7 million dollars, if I send him $5,000?
December 4th, 2006 at 10:02 amIf those congregations are even considering a move like that, I think they should separate.
December 4th, 2006 at 10:32 amUh oh, gay people.
“Keep them in the ghetto or train to Auschwitz?” – Bruno, gay Austrian reporter character from Da Ali G Show
“Train to Auschwitz.” – Intolerant people posing as real Christians
These guys are an embarrassment to all true Christians.
