Pundit Attacking Muslim Congressman Is Bush Appointee to Holocaust Memorial Board

Right-wing talk show host Dennis Prager has raised a firestorm charging that Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, must swear in using a Bible. He said that if Ellison swears in with a Quran, it would “undermin[e] American civilization” and be akin to swearing in with a copy of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

Prager is not a typical talk radio host. In September, he was appointed by President Bush to a five-year term on the taxpayer-funded United States Holocaust Memorial Council. A statement announcing Prager’s appointment praised his “unique moral voice.”

Yesterday, the Council on American Islamic Relations called on Prager to be removed from this position:

No one who holds such bigoted, intolerant and divisive views should be in a policymaking position at a taxpayer-funded institution that seeks to educate Americans about the destructive impact hatred has had, and continues to have, on every society. As a presidential appointee, Prager’s continued presence on the council would send a negative message to Muslims worldwide about America’s commitment to religious tolerance.

Likewise, the Anti-Defamation League, a group battling anti-Semitism and other bigotry, issued a statement calling Prager’s views “intolerant,” “misinformed on the facts,” and “downright un-American.”

Digg It!

  5. squegeeboo says:

My favorite part is that the swearing in doesn’t use a bible, Koran, or otherwise holy book. However, the photo-op afterwards quite often does, so these complaints are based off of how he chooses to do his photo-op.

  7. chimpeach says:

Here’s what the ADL said about him:

Prager presents intolerant, ugly views. His comparison of Ellison’s desire to “choose his favorite book” to that of the right of a racist elected to public office to use Hitler’s Mein Kampf is outrageous. If Prager were merely a blogger and radio talk-show host trying to be relevant and provocative, these views might not merit a response. But as a newly-appointed member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, Prager and his views must be held to a higher standard.

They should call for his removal, too.

  30. ScottDrakeISU says:

From all the posts and blogs I’ve read on this situation, I’ve yet to see anyone comment yet that Prager proposes that the Bible is ‘American.’ As a Born-Again Christian, I believe that Christ dies for everyone, not just 21st American Republicans. Or just Americans. Whatever. How is a book — whether you believe is was written by divine inspiriation or not — written 2000-3000 years ago uniquely American? Prager is looking to stir up the pot, get some ratings, et. al. It worked. I believe I read that the American Family Association (or some ubiquously named organization along that line) has said they will call for and support a plan that requires all members of Congress to swear in on a Holy Bible. Okay. Why? Why would I want someone who doesn’t share the same faith as mine to swear on Text I consider Holy? It’s as though I’m forcing my faith on them. Will that win me a soul for Heaven? I’m doubtful. It’s like Intelligent Design(ID). As a Believer, I find ID offensive. Know why I believe the Earth was created in 7 days? Not because of some ‘being in the sky.’ No. I believe that because the Bible tells me so and I trust through faith what the Bible tells me. ID takes away what I believe through faith and tells me there might possibly be something out there. Maybe it’s even God! What’s scientific about that? What happens when you get to the end of the universe? What’s on the other side? It’s left to faith. In summary, I’m really tired of Republicans exploiting my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Born again is used by alcoholics, wife beaters, drug takers, criminals, politicians, losers as a way to create a “do over” of their behavior up to that point. After they are born again, they start to screw up once more. Daryll is to be commended for leaving his hideous past and becoming born again. I think it is admirable. But sir, if you hadn’t screwed up your life (or the lives of your loved ones) you wouldn’t have to be born again – as once would have been enough. Quick question: if there is only one true bible (word of God), why would King James have written one also? Did King James re-write God’s words or did King James just make stuff up? I am confused about this part of the biblical history.

Since Daryll isn’t man enough to respond to your polite question, June, I will:

Yes! Yes, it was the will of God that Republicans lost the majority status from their mendacity and their continued lack of ethics. I’m sure that Daryll will agree with me that God had a hand in returning the Democrats to the Majority. God was just responding to the majority of prayers that the GOP be shown the door!

My reading of relevant scripture and the Book of Revelations says that to anticipate, attempt to induce, or even try to predict the rapture are all considered sacrilegious. To think that you understand God is a sin of arrogance. To prop yourself up as speaking for God is a sin of vanity.

I guess I could have misinterpreted all that stuff. Or maybe it’s that you are reading the “King George” version.

  97. Benjamin says:

Actually Krazny, I’m referencing what may be the basis for this whole ‘must swear on the Bible’ thing. The Bible in question is the Christian Bible, usually King James Version in English. Since King James didn’t include the Quran, we shouldn’t swear on it and it’s not the basis of American culture. I really think American High School students should take a tour of the major world religions course. The Quran is probably better accessible as excerpts rather than as the length-descending suras you’ll find in a translation.

Again, I’m very confused as to what sort of practicing Jew would endorse the idea that the Bible is superior, in America, to the Torah, for the purposes of swearing on. Again, this seems like a view only a Christian would intelligibly have, because only Christians believe that the New Testament somehow completes or trumps the Torah. Even if his arguments about how the nation is built on Judeo-Christian values made sense, there is still no reason for him to disagree with Jews who use only the Torah.

Also note that he’s clarified his stance: Jews who use the Torah are no longer implied to be undermining civilization. Phew! Only Muslims who use the Koran are doing that.

All at, of course, a photo-op of no official significance, which of course MAKES HIS POINT EVEN MORE VALID WOOT!

Sorry, I can’t explain how, but I was possessed by the supreme idiocy AKA David Horowitz

And Daryll, it’s obviously God’s Will that the GOP got smacked around so bad on November 7, obviously God was tired of their supreme hypocrisy on so many matters & individuals

If the GOP had not sinned greatly in God’s eyes, they’d still be keeping W away from all those pesky investigations now headed W’s way

    BTW

You sound not like a Christian, but rather an Old Testamentalist, and I’ll bet you would have been the first-enthusiastically-to scourge Christ, bind him to the cross via spikes and pierce his side

Christ condemned the Pharisees and religious hypocrites of his day, he did NOT side with them to oppress already unpopular groups, say, tax collectors & lepers

And if anyone can point out where Christ condemned homosexuals or women who have had abortions, then please do share with the rest of the class, as I haven’t found those examples yet

My favorite part of the bible is Matthew 23, and it’s still as relevant when applied to the theological hucksters leading the US Taliban Wannabes as it was when condemning the Pharisees & moneychangers in the Temple

What those like Daryll just can’t admit to themselves is that there is no religion that is objectively “better” or more “legitimate” than another, no one religion has more of a grasp on Truth than any other, they’re all subjective interpretations of faith

    Too Bad, So Sad

I was just thinking today how as an atheist I belong to one of the few groups it is pretty much universally “A-OK” to discriminate against, still. Not whining (it’s not like I go about screaming “I’m an atheist! I’m an atheist! and getting pelted with heavy volumes of scripture), just remarking.

It was “Poppy” Bush, wasn’t it, who said he wasn’t sure atheists should be allowed to be citizens?

Ever cut your hair around the temples?

Because if you do any of those, you need to slash the wrists buddy.

Or do you get to pick and choose the parts of the Bible you “believe” in? If so, it’s another self-help book of suggestions and certainly not something to get your panties all bunched up over.

I wonder about that myself. But, then again, I’ve noticed over the years that the ones who present themselves as the ‘holiest of the holy’ don’t tend to stick too close to scripture, even though they like to quote passages, and often seem to ad lib.

  120. Tuber says:

    #111 Daryll,

I don’t think that “Thou shalt not use the lord’s name in vain” means what you think it means. You seem like a nice enough fellow but all the hypocritical preaching is a bit much. If I understand you correctly, you say:

Thou shall not kill (unless you are killing Arabs, Palestinian, Muslim, African, or Asian, and then it’s a free for all)

Thou shall honor thy mother and father (unless they are liberals or democrats, then its okay to kill them if you must)

Thall shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife or possessions (unless you REALLY want them and then if your army is bigger then you can take them by force)

I don’t envision God being so nationalistic.

    nanlichi,

I don’t think our Dear Daryll will be answering your question. I work for a religious social service agency, I am on the ethics panel. We review “ethical dilemmas” and make recommendations. We consult with outside professionals as needed. We have an ethical dilemma where a refugee client of ours cannot get pregnant due to medical conditons and would die if she gets pregnant. Our dilemma is: Does the staff help this woman get contraception or do we avoid it? We asked the heavenly Father about it, as a consult, we asked him 5 times. He completely blew us all off. Because he does not have an answer to the question that makes his religion look rediculous. Daryll won’t give you an answer either.

  123. Michael says:

“Once you become born again, you’ll understand the true meaning and purpose of the King James Bible.” – Daryll

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Yeah, right! Gotcha! The “King James Bible” – as edited and translaetd by Henry VIII…You remember him, right? Divorced his wife of 20+ years to marry her maid, and then let her die in squalor, telling the Pope to go hang so he could start his own religion? Then chopped off wifey #2’s head because he found out what a snide, conniving bit** she really was? Executed wife #4, who was too young to realize just exactly what she was dealing with? Then divorced Wife #5 – and ADOPTED HER AS HIS SISTER?

Christianity – the best recruiting tool for Pagans, Satanists, Atheists and others ever invented…..

  124. DonD says:

If one reads all the religious books (Bible, Torah, Quran, Buddha’s Best Seller, Mein Kampf, etc) very carefully you will find a strikingly similar phrase: “And on the Eight Day Man created God!” If one has to swear to a God it is only meaningful that he swear to his own God, not some alien God. If I were to swear on a book I would want the latest copy of Food and Wine or “The Complete Bartender’s Guide.” Leave the Man alone and go tend your own morals.

That’s right, Mike. We liberals don’t use the words for colors anymore. They’re discriminatory. It’s wrong to label things by their hue.

In fact, we don’t use adjectives of any kind, just to be on the safe side.

Daryll, if you were born in Africa in 1150 b.c where would your soul go even if you lived the most pious life possible? Daryll, were there more gay people (as a percentage) before Christ? I scared off some Mormons with that very word.

They’d come to convert me in Zion National Park with cocoa and their book. I rejected the cocoa because vegans don’t do dairy, and while they stood there scratching their heads trying to figure out how to get around that barrier, I departed.

  172. Michael says:

Michael, I believe you mean James I. Thus the name. And James himself did none of the translating, etc.

    Comment by Glenn Becker

    Glenn,

Sorry – I was on a hyperbolic roll, there. The “Dread Sovereign” did indeed create his own liturgy, and did order the Bible to be translated into English. James directed a new translation, and did actually translate some of the Bible, though not nearly all of it, obviously.

The point is this: “The Bible” – in its original form, the Septuagint[sp?] – is an amalgam of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin source-material. It has since been translated into numerous langauges, some several times over. Books have been “de-canonized”, “re-canonized”, and no two versions of even “Fundie” bibles agree (do a side-by-side with the KJV, New English, Lutheran, Vulgate, Gideon, etc. and see for yourself: no two completely agree on their wording).

I once explained this to a Sikh friend – he thought I was making a religious joke…until I showed him. He couldn’t believe it.

What I find revolting is that so many people have died over the centuries because of something so maleable that it qualifies as “limp” in the veracity department.

  173. Raven says:

  175. MikeSF says:

No, I can’t. I’m still laughing at your last response. When your right, your right (no offense, I’m not calling you a right-winger) If you did drink I’d like to send you a nice bottle of Napa wine.

Placing of a hand on a Bible has also been such an optional addition and, as others have pointed out, is usually for the photo-ops.

This is a taxpayer-funded institution. The Board HAS to listen.

Understood and apologies for my moment of pedantry re the KJV ;).

Thanks for this post which neatly encapsulates some questions I regularly restrain myself from asking Bible – thumpers (”so was each translation of the Bible divinely inspired as well? and if so, why do the translations disagree?”).

When I read these works I read them to understand cultural backgrounds, the underpinning of literary works, etc. etc. etc. If I tried to use them to understand the universe in any way I would become psychotic.

    Credit Repair Scams

    “Erase Bad Debt !”

“Remove Negative Items From Your Credit Report”

You’ve probably seen these headlines and others just like it promising to clean up or “fix” bad credit. For someone who suffers from a bad or poor credit rating, these headlines are certainly an appealing offer.

Imagine finally being able to buy that new car, get debt collectors off your back, and enjoy a new found freedom from your past debts.

Sound to good to be true ? It probably is. Once you fall prey to the credit repair offer and pay the hefty fees involved to clean up your record, here’s what happens:

  259. Think Progress » U.S. Holocaust Memorial Distances Itself From Right-Wing Pundit says:

[...] Yesterday, ThinkProgress noted that right-wing talk radio host Dennis Prager — who demands that Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, must swear in using a Christian Bible — was appointed by President Bush to the taxpayer-funded United States Holocaust Memorial Council. [...]

  260. nanuk says:

It seems as though many of you have just picked up on this story. I have been following it for a few days now and here is the gist of what is wrong with Pragers assertions:

    1. The official swearing-in ceremony that occurs in Congress (and all government agencies) is done without any Holy text and without mention of any Holy being.

    2. The consititution states “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” (Article VI, section 3)

    3. There is precedent both in the past and during this calender year that not one consistent Holy book has been used in the un-official (photo-op) swearing-in ceremony: Pres. Thruman did not use any book, Pres. Kennedy used a Catholic Bible, Rep. Lidely (R-HI) used the Tanakh in 2002 and 12/4/2006, Rep. Wasserman Shultz used the Hebrew Bbile (Tankh) provided by Congressman Akerman.

    4. This country was not intended by the founding fathers to be a Christian Nation: Treaty with Tripoli (1796) states in Article 11: “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen …” ( signed 1/3/1797 by Joel Barlow the American consul-general to the Barbary states).

    5. If the shoe were on the other foot: At least one Muslim country (a theocracy no less) provides members of its Parliament (Islamic Consultative Assembly) beloging to religious minorities to swear on their holy book. “Members belonging to the religious minorities will swear by their own sacred books while taking this oath. Members not attending the first session will perform the ceremony of taking the oath at the first session they attend.” (Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran – Article 67).

So after 10 minutes of research it is evident that Mr. Prager made his comments out of bigotry. His only reason for attacking Mr. Ellison is not that he is not using the Bible but that he using a Quran. His hatred of a Muslim having been elected to Congress is glaring. This is a slap in the face of the citizens of Minnesota who chose Mr. Ellison as their representative. It would be a hypocrisay for a man who is intolerant of citizens who are a religious minority to head a orginzation that is set up to remind the world of the over 6+ million deaths that occured due intolerance of a religious minority. Further, to make use of a book that is at the heart of the orginzation he heads so callously only brings dishonor to those victims that the memorial is designed to remember. It only makes sense that a bigot such as this be removed from a position appointed by the President of the United States.

    Quran = Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”

    Sounds absurd

  262. Philip Dennany says:

Too many folks that hold a Bible, don’t pay attention to what it really says.
As any that read it for real, would know that Sunday is not a sabath. The sabath is the 7th day when a person rests, after 6 days of labor. Silly people of today take their rest on the first day – a no-no. Just as they didn’t read the history of Bush before making the S-B their prez.

To be sworn in to Congress does not require a bible, no other congressperson is held to that standard, the Republicans are hypocrits

  265. Tony Dobrowolski says:

Bush picked Rumsfeld and Boulton…why should anyone be surprised at this idiotic appointment. Bush was sworn in on a Bible…that could be seen as pure, unadulterated blasphemy! Keith Elison should be able to be sworn in on the Quran if he so chooses.
