ThinkFast: December 5, 2006

rainmonkey.jpg

“A swath of Amazon rain forest the size of Alabama was placed under government protection Monday,” the AP reports. The area “contains more than 25 percent of the world’s remaining humid tropical forests and the largest remaining unpolluted fresh water reserves in the American tropics.”

Hearings for Defense nominee Robert Gates are today. Gates has said “that he supported Bush’s decision to invade in 2003 and that leaving Iraq ‘in chaos’ would harm U.S. interests for many years. Beyond that he has not said how the U.S. might get Iraq moving in the right direction.”

Hours after his meeting yesterday with President Bush, powerful Shiite polititian Abdul Aziz al-Hakim gave a speech denying that “Shiite militias are fueling the sectarian strife” and issuing “one of the starkest criticisms of U.S. military strategy by an Iraqi leader.”

A semiannual report filed by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general “highlights a litany of staff misconduct: immigration officials demanding sex in exchange for visas, airport screeners stealing money from tourists’ luggage, federal air marshals smuggling drugs, and employees from various DHS agencies committing sex crimes.”

The Supreme Court is set to rule against “what is left, if anything, of Brown v. Board of Education.” After hearings yesterday on two schools’ racial integration programs, “the only question was how far the court would go in ruling such plans unconstitutional.”

Although companies are supposed to pay royalties every time they drill for oil or gas on federal property, the Interior Department has audited just 20 percent of companies. “The rest of the time, the payments are made on the honor system. But the government agency ‘could not accurately count‘ its own oil and gas audits.”

100,000: The number of government contractors operating in Iraq, “a total that is approaching the size of the U.S. military force there.” Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky (D-IL) said the estimate “further demonstrates the need for Congress to finally engage in responsible, serious and aggressive oversight” over private military contracting.

“The Army and Marine Corps have sunk more than 40 percent of their ground combat equipment into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Replacing, repairing, and upgrading combat equipment will cost at least $17 billion annually for several more years; before the war, “the Army spent $2.5 billion to $3 billion a year on wear and tear.”

Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “wants to fast-track efforts to boost the federal minimum wage,” and she is pushing for a “stand alone” bill that “will go straight to the floor for consideration.”

And finally: Conservative seeking conservative for a radical night out. Last Friday, a “32-year-old married housewife” posted a personal ad on Craigslist.org “looking for guys who work at the Heritage Foundation or other conservative think tanks.” “I know I will get some email of someone accusing this of being some scam but it really isn’t,” she wrote. “I just have a real fetish for intellectual conservatives.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

“I just have a real fetish for intellectual conservatives.”

Come on live in Rochester…..although the intellectual part might be an issue for me……

Written by Jamal Miftah, a member of the Islamic Center of Tulsa Mosque.
Because of lack of knowledge of Islam, Muslim youth are misguided into believing by the so-called champions of the cause of Islam that the current spate of killings and barbarism, which has no equal in the recent civilized history, is jihad in the name of Islam. They are incited, in the name of Islam, to commit heinous crimes not pardonable by any religion and strictly forbidden in Islam….

Even mosques and Islamic institutions in the U.S. and around the world have become tools in [Al-Qaeda's] hands and are used for collecting funds for their criminal acts. Half of the funds collected go into the pockets of their local agents and the rest are sent to these thugs.

They are the reason for branding the peaceful religion of Islam as terrorism. The result, therefore, is in the form of Danish cartoons and remarks/reference by the Pope.

I appeal to the Muslim youth in particular and Muslims of the world in general to rise up and start jihad against the killers of humanity and help the civilized world to bring these culprits to justice and prove that Islam is not a religion of hatred and aggression.

I appeal to the Muslim clerics around the world that, rather than issuing empty fatwas condemning suicide bombing, they should issue a fatwa for the death of such scoundrels and barbarians who have taken more than 4,267 lives of innocent people in the name of Islam and have carried out more than 24 terrorist attacks on civilian installations throughout the world. This does not include the chilling number of deaths because of such activities in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is well over 250,000.

I appeal to al-Zawahri and his band of thugs to hand themselves over to justice and stop spreading evil and killing innocent humans around the world in the name of Islam. Their time is limited and Muslims of the world will soon rise against them to apprehend them and bring them to justice.

Wouldn’t you know, he got thrown out of his group for criticizing Islam

  12. BearCountry says:

Bush’s view now seems to be that it is the Sunni Arab population’s fault that there is ongoing opposition to US occupation and probable Shiite domination of the nation. Bush got some Shiite backing yesterday that the US should strike harder at those causing problems (not Shiites, of course). Therefore, the US should not leave the country but attack the Sunni Arabs.

Today we have the Gates love fest. There are many problems with Gates, not least is his involvement with Iran-contra, that should disqualify him.

I have heard commentors on WBAI, of all places, calling McCain “centrist.” I have a hard time hearing such comments without screaming. In fact, they were more sarcastic toward HRC than “Straight Talk” (ha, ha, ha) McCain.

In spite of the results of the last election, we are going to be treated to the Senate panel talking about increasing the troops in Iraq, not decreasing them. There is a lot of talk now about staying until the “mission is complete.” I have yet to understand what our real mission is because it has been changed so many times, and I have no way of knowing how to determine when it is complete.

I guess that the message that was sent on November 7 wound up in the dead letter file. Until we get rid of all the corporatist elected officials, we are doomed to continue the same problems with different faces in charge.

Contractors, even US citizens work tax free while in combat zones one of the reasons, along with the high pay, that so many sign up.

BanReligion – if the current path of humanity ammassing fortunes upon a small fraction of the population and creating a ruling class does not work to serve humanity, a different path must be chosen.

What aspect of humanity is being served? Creating a wealthy ruling class gives the illusion that the species will survive no matter what catastrophy; that there will always be at least some who have enough resources to be able to continue to propagate. It’s a fear of death, not just of the individual, but of extinction.

One can observe that fear at work when so much of the population blindly follows a leader.

The solution? Meet and overcome that fear within yourself, then teach others to do the same. Eventually a New Enlightenment will spread across the land. Imagine what that would mean and all that would entail.

We know this, sadly it doesn’t appear much will be done. Pelosi announcing no Impeachments, when there’s plenty to impeach over. I’ve pretty much given up hope, and think the Dem’s truly are just as bad as the GOP.

It means nothing. You’ll find out soon enough that the pronouncement about impeachment being off the table does not mean there won’t be any impeachment. There will be an impeachment when the investigations start to reveal to the public the level of fraud and criminal behavior perpetrated by this administration. The public will demand it and Pelosi will gladly go along with it when they do.

It might have given you comfort to hear Pelosi start things off with a declaration that there would be an impeachment first and foremost, and that it would take precedence over all other affairs of Congress. But, whether or not you understand why and whether or not it pleases you, that just wouldn’t be a good way to go about it. The investigations come first. What they reveal will make the compelling case for impeachment.

Pelosi isn’t stupid, and she and a great number of other Dems in Congress know what Bush has been pulling for the past six years. They’re not going to let him get away with it. But, it’s up to us to make sure they know we haven’t forgotten. Impeachment will rely on something called “political will”. If the Dems don’t think they have the backing of the country on it, they’re not going to be so enthused about doing it. Write letters to members of Congress to let them know you haven’t forgotten. Let them know what you want them to investigate. Don’t be shrill. Don’t scream at them that they aren’t moving fast enough for your liking. Just be persistent and remind them of the facts.

    by Jay Randal

Details about the so-called “Iraq Study Group Report” have been leaking out, for the past several days, and the report’s content seems to indicate a whitewash of events happening in Iraq and bogus recommendations to justify keeping troops there for rest of Bush’s term?

Because of President George W. Bush’s invasion, and occupation of Iraq, the country has fallen into complete chaos and created bloody sectarian civil war, so nothing can be done to patch-up Bush’s fiasco, nor is it wise to keep US troops there for two more years!

Two more years of occupying Iraq would result in the deaths of another 2 to 3 thousand troops, and 20 to 30 thousand more wounded/maimed, as well as costing us another half-trillion dollars or more to fund the fiasco, so the report is filled with hogwash to paper over lies!

Most Americans are getting sick and tired of falsehoods being peddled out of Washington, DC, trying to con us into believing that Iraq quagmire can be salvaged, but it’s way past time for politicians to realize that Iraq is a utter failure, so all the troops must be removed now!

Taking in account that a contractor is far costlier than a soldier, I figure that a lot of federal money is going down the drain…
