If the fundamentalists and their brand of god were more important to the VP, he might have disowned Mary for living with another woman the past 15 years. He has said she should have the same freedoms as every other (non-incarcerated) citizen, but that’s not saying much of a man who has made incarceration so easy. Many fundamentalists have tossed out their own children in the name of family values, children they raised who turned out gay, as though it’s the kids’ fault. But the flocks are really only important on voting day, as they comprise a sizable group of people who are predisposed to do what they’re told.

Cheney’s biggest crime of course is manufacturing this war and guaranteeing his profits by sending misinformed uniforms to kill and be killed. Soldiers are just another sizeable group of people who do what they are told, but the individuals and their personal values (honor, duty, job training) don’t matter either.

I think the Cheney family values money above all, and when you’ve got so much that you can’t possibly spend it all by yourself, legacy matters. Mary’s partner Heather, a former park ranger, could have had the baby but not the legacy. If they ever break up, Poe is D and O — with or without a baby who calls our VP “Grandpa”. So Dick Cheney’s gay daughter’s child will be fine, whether or not the laws catch up soon and give Mary the same right to marry that her nongay sister enjoys. To the Second Family’s credit, they are thrilled and will welcome their sixth grandchild. Mary’s sister had the first five; hopefully she’ll stop now.

I’ve been disgusted with Mary Cheney for selling gays out in exchange for a few multi-millions of our tax dollars, which her father’s companies have siphoned and which she’ll inherit. Karl Rove supposedly loved the gay man who raised him, frequently visiting his stepfather and taking care of the old man until he died, but he sold gays out for much less money.

But Mary Cheney has been openly gay and committed to her partner for many years, even while she helped her father strategize his rise to power. It must take fortitude to walk into a roomful of people who hate you. If she’s got a heart, she must have to shield it from damnation by the faithful in her party.

I imagine it required great courage for her to decide to get pregnant, especially thick in the middle of an environment where sanctimonious nimrods abound, knowing full well the most religious would pass the harshest judgments on her and her partner. Those of you reading who’ve carried a child, imagine being smeared in public by practically everyone when you’re already going through the stress of gestation…

The Christianistas want Mary to burn because she’s gay, her partner is gay, and now, o God, Mary is pregnant and there isn’t a man to take credit. Does a sterilized turkey baster make it an immaculate conception? Does that mean the Rapture is near? Not only that, but the sperm donor who spilled his seed is guilty of something that made God strike Onan dead with his dick out. The only thing that would make this OK to this crowd is if Mary’s sister’s husband felt called to practice his love on kinwomen who are of child-bearing age but lack the necessary male. Mary and Heather cannot get married, so this wouldn’t be adultery as long as the guy doesn’t lust for Mary. As long as he doesn’t spill his seed, no sin. But whether the donor was the brother-in-law (Mary’s partner would be the sister-outlaw), or he’s kept away by adoption laws or a strict prepregnancy agreement, the seed spiller will be missing from this poor child’s life. Also dinners at Grandpa’s house and a chance to inherit all those spoils of war.

And then there are lesbians who call Mary “Uncle Tomboy” (guilty). Some gay men, especially the closeted Republican sympathizers, are so seriously offended by Mary’s hairdo that this is the real reason they won’t sign up with Log Cabin. That unfortunate girl got her daddy’s looks and her mother’s pearls, and the neoconnie suits do not help the situation.

So Mary is getting it from all sides. And while the Cheney family doesn’t need my sympathy or deserve my support, it’s only fair to give credit to Mary Cheney for boldly going where absolutely no one has gone before. I didn’t like Foley’s or Haggard’s politics either, but they built their own closets which became their coffins. Mary will wear maternity clothes and lean on Heather’s arm, Dick will hold the baby, W will congratulate him, Mrs. Dick and Mrs. W will buy nice things for the baby… all of this normalizes gay couples with children, and Mary Cheney is making it happen.

I too wish they had chosen to adopt, because that would have addressed the overpopulation issue and one tiny part of the problem of unwanted children (all of whom are the result of sex among heterosexuals, by the way). Mary Cheney is still a rightwing nut (or is that a right wingnut?).

Paul’s letters are taken out of context so badly, and history is not taken into account with them, it would take far too much space to go into here.

Christianity, by it’s base in Judaism, is a religion of the book. What does that mean? It means you educate yourself about your religion.
