U.S. Holocaust Memorial Distances Itself From Right-Wing Pundit

Yesterday, ThinkProgress noted that right-wing talk radio host Dennis Prager — who demands that Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), a Muslim, swear in using a Christian Bible — was appointed by President Bush to the taxpayer-funded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.

The Holocaust Memorial Museum has now issued a statement distancing itself from Prager. The museum emphasizes that Prager “speaks solely for himself,” and that his statements “do not reflect the position of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.”

The statement also points out that the museum does not have the authority to remove Prager from its board, since he is a presidential appointee.

Yesterday, the Council on American Islamic Relations said “Prager’s continued presence on the council would send a negative message to Muslims worldwide about America’s commitment to religious tolerance.” The Anti-Defamation League, a group that combats anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, called Prager’s views “intolerant,” “misinformed on the facts,” and “downright un-American.”

This disturbs me! Just cuz Reverend Praeger SOUNDS a little like Josef Goebbels, don't mean he'd actually ENJOY killin' Jews... I mean, Muslims.

But, on a side note, have you ever noticed that when you squints yer eyes some, that them Jews and Muslims kinda... LOOKS alike??? Mebbe they was worried Reverend Praeger would get confused and put the wrong people in the camps.

  25. Douglas G. Says:

My question is this - Why should we show religious tolerance towards a religion, that basically, prohibits religious tolerance? Quite frankly, he was elected to an office that by tradition swears in using a bible. Jewish as well as Christian, and even Atheist's have sworn in via that very same bible, what make this man any different? I think HE needs to show religious tolerance, and respect for OUR customs, and do the right thing.

  26. Krazny Says:

I think you're off on that one Douglas, to the best of my knowledge, the bible has never been used in this swearing in ceremony, why would it need to be started now?

  27. ForTruth Says:

My question is this - Why should we show religious tolerance towards a religion, that basically, prohibits religious tolerance?

Because tolerance has to start somewhere. How about from within? Drop the chip and get on with it.

  28. tarazan Says:

Is this guy paid Taxpayer money?!!

  29. robert Says:

Douglas G., Here is the point. No one swears in using the Bible. That is done for "photo ops". Some will chose to have a separate ceremony swearing in using a Bible so they have the "nice picture" for their next campaign.

The Muslim Sen.-Elect is doing the "right thing" and respecting our most sacred custom. He is exercising his rights of expression and religion.

Douglas, you are completely oblivious to the facts of this story:
    1) Islam does not prohibit religious tolerance, and Keith Ellison, as a Muslim, is not intolerant of others' beliefs.
    2) Nobody is sworn in on a Bible or on any other book. That point has been covered and put to rest.
    3) He has done nothing to show disrespect for anyone's customs. And, what the hell do you mean "OUR customs"? Who are you including as members of your group?

Open up the curtains and let a little knowledge in once in a while.

  32. Tom3 Says:

Dennis Prager is a TRAITOR to the US Constitution.

He is demanding a religious test for public office. Thats unconstitutional.

This guy is a racist bastard and should not be on the Holocaust board.

The Holocaust museum has other problems. They are too focused on the Jews in the Holocaust. Their website constantly uses the 6 Million Jews figure, but another 5 million people were also killed in Hitler's death camps. Not just Jews, but Christians, Communists, Gypsies, Gays, and disabled people were sent to their deaths.

The Jews do not own the Holocaust. Just like they do not own Gaza or the West Bank. They have no monopoly on moral authority.

  33. ScrewBush Says:

    "Our Customs"... Oh boy.

Perhaps brother Douglas can reconcile my favorite quote and what I assume is his vision of a Christian America:

"American was buit on the genocide of one race and the enslavement on another"

  34. Tom3 Says:

    Dennis Prager is an IDIOT.

There is no Bible or any other religious book used at the OFFICIAL swearing in ceremony. The new Representatives just raise their hand.

The only time a Bible gets whipped out is during a photo op staged after the official ceremony.

So, Prager is telling a new member of Congress which book he should use in a photo op. A PHOTO OP!!

  35. Douglas G. Says:

#32 and others, If you really believe that Islam does not prohibit religious tolerance, you have NOT looked into this matter. Islam does not in any way allow for tolerance, and requires conversion to, or at the very least, requires you to PAY, to keep your head. Not a very tolerant sounding reliion to me.

Next, yes, it is a ceremony used for photo ops, and not required, but as such, has always been performed with the Bible.

He can either choose to be tolerant and do as others before him has done, (That btw covers the OUR customs, since you do not wish to be included as an American), and use the bible, or, forego the PHOTO shoot, and not swear in at all.

As for dropping the chip and getting on with it? I would be more than happy do, as soon as ISLAM does the same thing. I have lost friends and more to this group of "peaceful tolerant" people, and I am here to tell you, they for the most part are NOT peaceful, NOT tolerant, and the ONLY time they are in the least bit tolerant, it's so they can get their own way and later on "LOSE" their tolerance, when it's no longer needed.

Maybe some of the people here should personally study the koran, (or however the heck you want to spell it), and see just what I am saying is 100% accurate.

They are not tolerant, they will never BE tolerant unless it suits them, and until they prove otherwise, my beliefs, (Based on direct interaction WITH people who follow Islam), will remain as they are.

Tell me, have YOU ever been out of the country, and in another? Ever notice they have CUSTOMS? Even little things.

  37. Tom3 Says:

Douglas G. is full of shit.

Islam is the fastest growing religion with over 1 billion adherents in most of the worlds nations. There are two big sects with big differences.

Only a Repuke idiot would make the blanket statement that Islam is intolerant. That flies in the face of historical and present-day facts, which people have already addressed in this post.

For example, while good Catholics were torturing and murdering Protestants and Jews during the Inquisition, the Moslems were tolerant of Jews and Christians in their cities.

It is obvious who is intolerant in here...the Religious Reich wingnuts. They hate anybody who isn't a Christofascist like them.

  38. Tom3 Says:

    Douglas G. is a fascist.

He agrees with Prager that he should be able to tell a new Congressman what to do during a PHOTO OP.

    A PHOTO OP.

This isn't official business, this is somebody taking a picture of the new Representative with his hand on a Koran instead of a Bible.

It's none of your goddamn business which book he uses, you Nazi pig.

Douglas, your blanket condemnation of all of Islam is meaningless. There are many different sects in many different parts of the world and many millions of different adherents. I've heard enough from you and Daryll and a few others around here to be able to say that Islam has nothing on the Christian community when it comes to intolerance, if I were so inclined and if I thought that all Christians marched in lockstep. You're pushing intolerance and trying to justify it by declaring that Ellison belongs to an intolerant religion. Do you know what the word "hypocrisy" means?

On top of that, Ellison isn't intolerant. A great many of his strongest supporters are Jews. Whether or not his religion is an intolerant one, and you can't honestly or accurately say that it is, that's of no consequence when he is personally tolerant of the religious beliefs of others.

You're trying so hard to justify bigotry, but it just doesn't wash.

What Prager doesn't understand is that some of his favorite people are muslim. Take the Saudi Royal family, they are muslims, yet you rarely if ever hear one of this racist rightwing nuts saying negative things about them.

The reason why is simple, OIL, OIL, OIL, and MONEY, MONEY,MONEY. Yes that's right, they've got more money than anyone of the planet and rightwing idiots love them because they want to suck up to them. Some of our highest ranking former officials have gone to work for them including former President Bush. Comment by red state loyalist — December 6, 2006 @ 5:24 pm

Your post is an enormous waste of time and bandwidth: The Bible is not used during the swearing-in. Nor is any other religious book, for that matter. We all know that now.

Try to keep up. Prager has obviously given up, or is willfully misleading the faithful followers. I suspect the later.

It is not I, but Keith Ellison, who has engaged in disuniting the country.

Yes, Prager has engaged in disuniting the country by playing the same game the "culture warriors" play: Focusing on a non-issue and use it as an excuse to bash those who do not believe in their god, or who otherwise disagree.

[Ellison] can still help reunite it by simply bringing both books to his ceremonial swearing-in.

Why would he bring either? No religious book is used during the ceremony. And why insist on making non-Christians swear on the Bible? Why the Inquisition mind-set?

And there would be a lot less cursing and anger in America.

There would be a lot less anger everywhere if twits like Prager et al stopped pushing their beliefs on everyone else, and blaming their own failures on those who disagree.

It's refreshing to see an organization such as the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council make the correct and responsible decision to distance themselves from Prager, who is just one of the right-wing extremists using biblical references to spread fear, intolerance and hatred. In an ironic twist, it was Hitler himself who used the Bible to justify the extermination of over 6 million people, most of them Jews, like Prager, during WW2. Prager is twisting Biblical references to get Jews and Christians to metaphorically "gang-up" on Gay and Lesbian Americans, and persecute them, much in the way Hiltler did when he began his propoganda machine in the 1930's. Prager's actions and words are beyond despicable - they are the ultimate sin and he will be judged accordingly.

While your at it, go f$ck your bible if you love it so much.

Its "tradition"? So was chaining Condi's ancestors to a fence 200 years ago.
Whats your point? Its tradition therefore its good therefore we should unquestioningly keep doing it and anyone who doesnt is a feeb?

The mideast, our source of your lifeblood, oil, is going to h3ll, dollars are being printed like mad in a distastrously shortsighted effort to prop up this stagnating economy, and politicians are showing up in indictments more than they are fundraisers, and here you are desparately trying to justify the rantings of some islamaphobic nut job who can't think of anything better to talk about than a ceremonial ceremony that 99.999 percent of america doesnt give a warm wet sh1t about. They care about what politicans can do for their lives, they dont care about which book of fairytales they lay thier hand on to take a fake photo-op oath.

People care about jobs, they care about feeding thier families, they care about making sure they can pay the bills if they get sick.

If it were me I'd take every bible in every hotel room in the country and sell it for scrap paper to feed the homeless. The book is a bunch of vile lies and brainwashing propaganda and frankly, we all know that if you idiots who love to caress it, squeeze it, make love to it didnt have an entire political party under your control, you'd be resorting to the same sort sort of violence that radical islam does.

The faux christian crusade in Iraq is going to end up causing alot more deaths than those tricky dicky Ayrabs coudl ever dream of.

Its really a shame, because jesus was probably a well meaning dude.. but this world is sadly overpopulated with idiots and those idiots love to take holy texts and manipulate them to their own warped powerhungry ends. So while theres undoubledly some good thoughts in the bible, its done more harm than good, and frankly the ignorance that all major religions have fostered has caused more death and destruction than any genocidal dictator could ever dream of doing. The catholic church, for instance, would rather watch entire continents, millions and millions of people, die of disease, overpopulation, and starvation than talk about birth control. If that isnt warped and sadistic, I dont know what is.

And I must say, I think its hilarious, that after spewing YEARS and YEARS of venom, you guys are now whining and crying like little B1tches when even a modest amount of it starts coming back at you...

"Oh Webb was meanie weenie to Bush..oooohhhhh"

"You are so mean to Mr. Muslim Basher..ooohh noooo"

This from the same group of political hemeroids who brought us swiftboating, purple heart band aids, imaginary illegitimate black babies, and comparisons of quadraplegic war veterans to osama bind goldstein.

    All I can say is

    "blow me."

if you smucks can't take it, stop supporting politicians who dish it out.

Frankly, if you think that whining and crying is going to get you back in power, its not going to work. You guys make a worldful of victims and martyrs, but when you try to play them, you don't seem very convincing..

Just so you know.A name does not make one a Muslim.A person from the Islamic faith whether he is born Muslim or a convert is free to carry a name given to him or her by their parents or themselves, whether its names is Arabic in nature or not.

There are many famous Muslims throughout history and the world who goes by non-Arabic or as you may think of as Islamic-like names. Cheng Ho(Zheng He),Ma Xianda of China,Michael Woolfe,Dave Chapelle,Everlast and Akon of the USA,Apisai Tora of Fiji,Bruno Metsu of France,Danny Williams,Chris Eubank of Britain and even that guy who led that coup in Thailand;General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, are but a few Muslims who used non-Arabic names. What makes them Muslim is their practice towards their religion.Simple as that. If one wants to comment on another's beliefs whether positively or negatively, please by all means at least get your facts right.

Another simple info for you.Not all Arabs are Muslims and not all Muslims are Arabs.Matter of fact, there are more Muslims in China and Russia than Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations combined.

    Peace out,brethren.

  76. Scott Says:

Well at least its one small step toward sanity. Next step? Stop using MY tax dollars for this memorial council. If homsexuals, communists, jews and other's who's predecessors were caught up in the violence wish to open a museum, fine, they and people who wish to privately fund such things can. Holocausts abound through history and it is supremacist to give voice only to one. Especially on tax dollars. Shameful. Shameful.

  77. Mark Peterson Says:

Mr. Praeger: please show me where in the constitution of the United States of America it specifies the use of a (Christian, King James, maybe Douey, New Acquarian, etc.) Bible for the oath of allegiance for new members of congress. I cannot find it. Do you have a special copy?
