Kofi Was Right

kofiOutgoing U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan will deliver an address in Independence, MO, today that offers “a blistering criticism of the Bush administration’s foreign policy.” The speech is previewed by Annan in a Washington Post op-ed. Conservative bloggers have already begun their attacks in response:

Captain’s Quarters:

There’s plenty more laughs in Annan’s goodbye screed. … We wanted to hold Saddam accountable for twelve years of intransigence in relation to 16 UN Security Council resolutions — and Annan opposed the effort.

Michelle Malkin:

Good riddance to you and your wagging finger, Kofi Annan. You will not be missed.

The right wing’s hatred of Annan has been fueled in part by the fact that he was a loud and public dissenter in the lead-up to the Iraq war and has never embraced the U.S. involvement in Iraq. Here’s a sampling of what Annan said before the Bush administration launched the war:

Has that moment [for war] arrived? That is the decision that the members of the Security Council now face. It is a grave decision indeed. If they fail to agree on a common position, and some of them then take action without the council’s authority, the legitimacy of that action will be widely questioned, and it will not gain the political support needed to ensure its long-term success, after its military phase. [WSJ, 3/11/03]

“Anything seen as a flimsy, hasty excuse to go to war will create difficulties in the council,” he said. … “The U.S. does seem to have a lower threshold than the others may have” for what constitutes a breach, he said. “The key is that whatever we do must have broad support from allies and the public.” If there is a decision to go to war against Iraq, he said, “the reasons must be seen as reasonable, credible and not contrived.” [Washington Post, 11/14/02]

In an accountable world, President Bush would be hanging a medal around the neck of Kofi Annan, not George Tenet.

UPDATE: A few more examples of rage from the right.

Quick, somone remind the Captain that in 2001, prior to 9/11, Colin Powell advised us that Iraq was not a threat (to us or to its neighbors), the sanctions were working, Iraq’s capacity to produce WMDs was greatly diminished, and Iraq had been contained. Condi echoed some of these same sentiments.

Unfortunately you were right Mr. Annan. The reasons for invading Iraq were completely contrived as there was absolutely no connection between Iraq and 9/11, nor were there any weapons of mass distruction found. However, your efforts shall not be in vain. America will expose the Bush administration for the lying, war & oil profiteering crooks they truly are.

    Read the op-ed piece. Fantastic!

    Well done, Mr Annan.

  6. The Trucker Pundit says:

Who the hell does Kofi Anan think he is? Sure, he’s outgoing Secretary General of the United Nations. But I didn’t vote for him!

And now, he’s leaving his job and he’s takin’ shots at the REAL leader of the world, and by that I mean Preznit George W. Bush Jr. He said the U.S. administration committed human rights abuses in the name of fighting terrorism, and took military action without broad international support. And he said it like they was BAD things!!!

He’s said some other dumb things in the past, too! He was criticized by some in the administration and in Iraq after saying earlier this month that the level of violence in Iraq is much worse than that of Lebanon’s civil war and that some Iraqis believe their lives were better under Saddam Hussein.

Now them things may be TRUE… but he still had no business SAYIN’ them.

He gives his final speech in the Harry Truman room over there at the UN Building. Then he has the audicity to QUOTE the last and onliest decent Demmycrat.

“As President Truman said, ‘The responsibility of the great states is to serve and not dominate the peoples of the world,”‘ Annan said. “He believed strongly that henceforth security must be collective and indivisible. That was why, for instance, that he insisted when faced with aggression by North Korea against the South in 1950, on bringing the issue to the United Nations,” Annan said. “Against such threats as these, no nation can make itself secure by seeking supremacy over all others.”

And here, he is wrong AGAIN! The US ain’t SEEKIN’ supremacy. IT IS SUPREME!!! We’s the biggest, baddest dog in the pound, and we’s always ready to bite some ass if them smaller dogs don’t do what they’s told. Maybe the next UN Secretary General might understand that and stop insistin’ that the US act in concert with the rest of the world.

    That’s just NONSENSE!

Wow 16 whole resolutions among which most were under the management of the US controlled 661 Committee. Boy, that’s a sure indictment. Of course CQ would never praise Kofi for aiding and abetting the US in helping Israel avoid any consequences for violating a hundred UN resolutions or so.

  12. Swordsbane says:

If something is right, ANYONE has the right to say it. If our own people were too chicken-sh*t to say them when it mattered (ie when we started the war) then you bet your a** he has a right to say them now, and he has every right to throw the words of OUR great leaders in our face, and we deserve it.

Why? Because we were wrong. Suck it up, sit down and shut up.

    Comment by Rosencrantz — December 11, 2006 @ 12:51 pm

The ironic part is that many people think the UN should be the worlds police force, but they forget that in order to BE the police they have to HAVE a police force. What we’ve got right now is a neighborhood full of gangs and when one of the gangs gets out of line, the strongest get together and combine forces to bitch-slap the unruly one. If you’re not going to TALK and try to come to some kind of peaceful arrangement, then the least you can do is get everyone together and come up with a REAL police force that might have a chance to clean up the neighborhood should you decide to go that route.

If you’re not willing to do that then the only thing the UN CAN do is talk and negotiate a peace, and we should at least pay lip-service to supporting them when they do it, not just storming in and doing what we please.

Bush’s Torture Ticking Time Bomb: Sins of Commission

Have Republicans become the party of torture, secret prisons, and indefinite detention? In his speech last month on signing the Military Commissions Act, President Bush declared that the bill “sends a clear message… We will never back down from the threats to our freedom.” “Rough interrogation” (a.k.a. torture) in the name of freedom may be Bush’s clearest ideological legacy.

Bush endlessly reminds listeners that “the U.S. does not torture” and that “torture is not an American value.” But “What is torture?” is the Bush version of the Pontius Pilate question. Bush appears to be using the definition of torture crafted by Justice Department official John Yoo: if detainees weren’t maimed or killed, they weren’t tortured. And the Justice Department acts as if, even if detainees are killed during interrogations, it is best to treat the deaths as harmless errors.

The MCA awarded Bush the power to label anyone on earth an enemy combatant and lock then up in perpetuity, nullifying the habeas corpus provision of the Constitution and “turning back the clock 800 years,” as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) said. While only foreigners can be tried before military tribunals, Americans accused of being enemy combatants can be detained indefinitely without charges and without appeal. Even though the Pentagon has effectively admitted that many of the people detained at Guantanamo were wrongfully seized and held, the MCA presumes that the president of the United States is both omniscient and always fair.

Are Troops Dying for Oil Profits?
    Privatization of Iraqi Oil Resources

Dennis Kucinich speaking from the Floor of the House
Link to this entry in the Congressional Record

    Dec 7, 2006

“On October 25th, President Bush cited oil as a reason for our continued presence in Iraq.

The Iraq study group is recommending Iraq law be changed to facilitate privatization of Iraq’s oil wealth.

“The Iraq Study Group report says as much as 500,000 barrels per day — that is $11.3 billion per year — in Iraqi oil wealth is now being stolen, which is interesting, since the Ministry of Oil is the first place our troops were sent after the invasion of Iraq and we now have 140,000 troops there.

“How can we expect the end of the Iraq war and national reconciliation in Iraq, while we advocate that Iraq’s oil wealth by handled by private oil companies?

“It is ironic that this report comes at the exact time the Interior Department’s Inspector General says that oil companies are cheating the US out of billions of dollars while the Administration looks the other way.

“Is it possible that Secretary Baker has a conflict of interest, which should have precluded him from co-chairing a study group whose final report promotes privatization of Iraq oil assets, given his ties to the oil industry?

“Is it possible that our troops are dying for the profits of private oil companies?”

#29 – Either all the Republicans envy Clinton, or they have fantasies about being in Monica Lewinsky’s position.

There is much, indeed, to envy.

Clinton’s administration uncovered and twarted the Bojinka Plot (which, if successful, would have made 9/11 look like a minor event).

Clinton’s administration actively went after Osama (instead of letting him slip through the hands of the local armies that were ordered in to do the job when the 10th Mountain had UBL cornered).

Clinton’s administration kept the world safe as it partied on January 1st, 2000 (even though there were many many warnings all over the world that attacks were going to disrupt the partying).

AND, Clinton seemed to be able to “get some” more often than his ReichWingNut counterparts. Oh, unless you count all the boys and gay lovers that WingNuts seem to solicite…

By contrast, Emperor Bush failed to bring UBL to justice (dead or alive), invaded a country that could do us no harm, gave tax cuts to the weathly, bankrupt the nation, did nothing to help the victims of Katrina, illegally spied on US citizens (still going on), and failed to sign the Kyoto Protocols to stem global warming.

If ever there was a worst President, history certainly hasn’t revealed it. Impeachment would be too simple, too easy, too good for Emperor George.

The funny part is that even though we went in illegally, and even though we didn’t find one thing we were looking for, we still are in the best position to make the situation better…… but we wont.

When Clinton suggested greater accountability of explosives, he was shot down by repubs. When Clinton and Gore suggested armed fire marshals and reinforced cockpit doors on airliners, repubs shot it down. On the day Clinton was 45 minutes late in his attempt to kill bin Laden with a cruise missle, he had spent the entire morning stuck in a deposition answering questions about oral sex. But it is the passing on Thursday of the neo-conservative Cold Warrior Jeane Kirkpatrick that perhaps best symbolized the closing of the book on Bush’s ill-conceived experiment with militant idealism in foreign affairs.

I offer $10,000 to you or anyone even the president of MIT’s engineering department who can drop a metal filing cabinent from any height and make it hit with enough FORCE to turn it into dust!

I explained it to my mother in “non-engineering” terms this way:

If you dropped a concrete block, metal filing cabinent, or plastic wastebasket from the top of the WTC tower to the ground, would they turn into dust and throw a cloud up in the air?

How come NO concrete floor pieces, metal filing cabinet pieces, and plastic wastebasket pieces were found in the rubbage, when there should have been TONS of that stuff?

Since when does something falling from GRAVITY hit with enough FORCE to change that some thing to dust?

Not even a sugar cube turns completely to dust when falling the height of one story, yet the 9-11 commission says that a WTC concrete floor falling one story into another floor, turns both concrete floors into dust, and also turns all the metal filing cabinets, and plastic wastebaskets on that floor into dust also?

Do you realize how STUPID that sounds!

It is NOT just Bush is in a state of denial, but the entire nation is. We admit we have a problem, that is our bottom line, but we refuse to see we ARE the problem.

Kofi should worry about his son getting into trouble again. At least with his job ending at the U.N. he’ll have more time to keep an eye on him.

I think it is classless to leave a post and blame others. One should focus on his successes. Since Kofi’s were very few (including not ending the travesty in Darfur) it isn’t a surprise he had a speech like this one.

  58. DemandTruth says:

Yes, Kofi Annan was indeed right all along. So were France, Germany, Russia, China, Mexico, Canada, the Pope, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Howard Dean, Barack Obama, Ted Kennedy, Russ Feingold, …

Wouldn’t be surprised given the huge cuts in VA funding for PTSD and other injuries received in Iraq

You have it right! The placing the oil assets owned by Iraq into the hands of Bush his cabal of the most wealthy people in the world was the purpose of the attack on Iraq from day one. The only reason that the USA is staying in Iraq is to complete this mission….that is the mission to rob the Iraqi people of their wealth and heritage. This is why it is so important for the United States to leave Iraq now and not later. Bushco are trying to bide time to get the “i”s dotted and the “t”s crossed on the contracts that will give them the rights to work the oil fields in Iraq and pay the Iraqi government a token payment for the robbery of the Iraqi treasure.

These facts make it imperative that the United States leave Iraq at once. Today is already to late for the USA to have left Iraq. The UN should force the USA out of Iraq by passing a motion in condemnation of the USA’s attack on Iraq and her people.

The Neocons need to be made to pay for this horrendous crime they have committed. All of the neocons need to be put on the world’s most wanted list of terrorists and terrorist enablers.

Finally, kudos to Mr. Annan for his leadership in a very dark time in world history.

  73. Ed says:

If we leave Iraq, the terrorists will have a staging ground for another attack on the US.

    Suppose they nuked San Francisco??

On second thought nuking SF wouldn’t be THAT bad. I could live with it.

Excellent point. If Clinton didn’t lie under oath Osama would have been dead.

#52 Critical Thinker – You represent this site just perfect. Conspiracy nut. I wish I could have Twilight Zone music playing in the background while I read your messages.

I course this message might get pulled like so many others I have written. There is not free speech here, totally censored. Otherwise there might be a discussion of Kofi’s stealing of billions of dollars or the rape of children by the UN.

#71 doug – The UN never forces anything except families to give up their children for sex so they can eat. The UN passed 12 sanctions against Saddam. Telling a dictator to stop being bad without backing it up is useless.

  76. mighty aphrodite says:

Kofi Annnnan has been such an effective Secretary General of the UN. His self-effacing and gentle tone reflects perfectly the thoughtful lethargic response of the UN to Darfur, etc. And the way Kofi got to the bottom of the UN/Oil for Food scandal! (I suppose the way Kofi and Co. were in bed with Saddam, it’s understandable he would be upset when Saddam was booted. When his son, Kojoey and other erstwhile “diplocrooks” had their shennanigans exposed, the Secretary General did everything in his power NOT to cooperate. ) It’s hard to keep track of all the UN successes when there haven’t been many…..

Goood riddance, Kofi…..now could you take the rest of the UN with you?

  77. mighty aphrodite says:

P.S. I KNEW TP would take great delight in Kofi’s remarks…..no surprise THERE….

  78. alfred chew says:

Shouldn’t Kofi Annan present this speech years back?

  79. doug says:

Happy Guy you are just deflecting. My point still stands Bushco has attacked Iraq to rob it. The US is acting as a bunch of highway robbers who think nothing of killing whoever gets in the way of the Neocon greed. Now matter how get the USA out of Iraq. There are many reasons why members of the UN vote the way they do. I simply say let the UN vote on demanding that the US leave Iraq. Your predicting the outcome is a futile excercise and merely deflects from the enterprise of saving the Iraqis from the USA.
