“Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have fled their homeland are likely to seek refugee status in the United States, humanitarian groups said, putting intense pressure on the Bush administration to reexamine a policy that authorizes only 500 Iraqis to be resettled here next year.” Bush’s former refugee affairs official said that “for political reasons the administration will discourage” the resettlement of Iraqi refugees in the United States “because of the psychological message it would send, that it is a losing cause.”
yet another casualty of the twisted neocon position: “Never admit your mistakes.”
December 11th, 2006 at 2:13 pmAnother thousands of casualties, for that matter.
Hell, this is more mindless drival put in the middle of a terrible genocide caused by bush….Wait long enough and all of Iraq and our soldiers will be dead……Easy case senario, give all those wanting to flea airline tickets to canada or mexico and they can just walk across our border’s like the rest of the world is doing….With the way our immigration has been operating they can have their names on the list and beclared u.s. citizens before another election, 30,000 made it through with out record’s already in the past few month’s…….Stop the madness, stop this war and the killing of people all over the world….Investigate, Impeach and jail all of these war monger’s…..Send food not bullets and bomb’s….Get out of Iraq now….Blessings
December 11th, 2006 at 2:33 pmWith over one million estimated refugees curretnly living in Jordan, Palestine and Iran, you would think the f**king Shrub would admit his mistake, do as the ISG report says and put an end to their misery and ours.
But Noooo. He is the Decider
All of those Iraqi refugess should set up tents on the WH lawn and the streets around the WH to remind Shrub of his stupid “decision”
December 11th, 2006 at 2:36 pmMaybe that is what the U.S. Navy is doing over there in the neighborhood, waiting to pick up people fleeing in small, overcrowded and leaking boats………………….
December 11th, 2006 at 2:39 pmWhat does the Bush admin hate America and American tradition so badly?
Perhaps the Bush admin and it supporters should secede from the USA ?
Perhaps they should form their own country and laws and stop defiling America and American principles?
December 11th, 2006 at 3:02 pmThe essence of this policy seems to be:
‘If we tell you nothing is wrong, then nothing is wrong. Irrepective of the facts.’
The entire world knows what is happening in Iraq. They now just sound churlish and stupid. ‘Sending the wrong message’, what is that about?
December 11th, 2006 at 3:17 pmMaybe this was Bush’s plan to bring democracy to the Iraqis all along – destroy their country so they have to come here. I just hope we still have a democracy when they arrive.
December 11th, 2006 at 3:28 pmI’m confused. Is this psychological message for the Iraqis or the US citizen. Is it a losing cause because they have to flee their country. Or is a loosing cause because they have to live here because they can’t live over there.
Sounds like both to me.
December 11th, 2006 at 3:34 pm8,
The only people that matter are voters. The Iraqis don’t vote in America, therefore they don’t matter.
Seeing your point through that prism, we can say that the ‘psychological message’ is only relevent to Americans. Do you really need to tell the Iraqis that their country is a mess anyway?
December 11th, 2006 at 3:42 pmMaybe I’m being a reactionary troll on this one, but the thought of Iraqi refugees fleeing into America kinda frightens me. I mean, I want to believe in the goodness and forgiveness of people, I really do. I want to believe only the innocent ones would come. Only the ones who don’t hate us for what we’ve done to them…
However, we can’t even tell who the enemy is over there anymore. Who’s to say all the terrorist/bad Iraqis won’t all just “flee” over here and start creating havoc & chaos over here? They aren’t stupid after all. That’s what I’d do.
Well, considering how bad life can get here (thanks, Bush) for a brown or foreign person post 9/11, maybe I wouldn’t want to come here anyway.
Ugh, I just don’t know about this one…
This frelling war even has ME distrustful of outsiders now.
Mission Accomplished I guess.
December 11th, 2006 at 5:40 pm10,
The Iraqis have plenty of reason to be angry with the Americans… but have you read Riverbend, for example? Iraqi problems are closer to home- infiltration of ministries by militias and so on.
As this suggests, the Iraqi ‘bad guys’ have enough on their hands already.
And don’t conflate ethnicity, nationality and religion, it’s complicated enough already!
December 11th, 2006 at 6:09 pmHaving waged war to liberate Iraqis, the United States would in effect be admitting failure if it allowed a substantial number of Iraqis to be classified as refugees who could seek asylum here.
And there is also the conservative Christian Bush supporters who will not be thrilled with the idea of admitting them swarthy Muslims into the US in large numbers. They already are up in arms about the burgeoning Hispanic immigration, and the loss of the European, Protestant identity.
Should the Bush administration allow Muslims and Arabs to settle in the US, I cannot imagine what the reaction of his “base” will be.
December 11th, 2006 at 6:27 pmAdmit them… Give them “enemy combatant” label… Plunk them in those holding pens we’re bulding and keep all lawyers away. Simple.
December 11th, 2006 at 6:53 pmThey already are up in arms about the burgeoning Hispanic immigration
Nope, only un in arms about the ILLEGAL Hispanc immigration. Anyone tha twants to come here LEGALLY should be welcome.
December 11th, 2006 at 7:12 pmDidn’t Bush or Cheney tell us they’ll follow us home?
December 11th, 2006 at 8:06 pmBush’s War has displaced 1,500,000 innocent children, women and men. And the Untied States Government will allow as many as 500 of the refugees into this country.
Oh, that’s right, Bush said they would welcome us with open arms. He never said he would welcome them.
And Libra, your point is well taken. Let’s house the 1,500,000 in those new detention centers Bush had built around the country. Currently it costs about $40,000/year to house prisoners. So, hey, we’d only have to borrow another $60,000,000,000 a year from China.
December 11th, 2006 at 8:31 pmAnyone tha twants to come here LEGALLY should be welcome.

Unfortunately, that is a rational opinion not shared by many of your fellow conservatives. Haven’t you heard about the “loss” of the American identity, and how Hispanics don’t “assimilate”? Do you remember the calls to Christianize Arabs?
Now imagine the Ann Coulters, Rush Limbaughs of the world waking up to a boatload of Muslim Iraqis settling in the US.
December 11th, 2006 at 8:46 pmHere’s an equity issue for you, robert. Corporations are legal persons. Corporations can cross the boarder freely under NAFTA for economic gain.
Mexicans are legal persons. Mexicans cannot cross the boarder freely for economic gain.
Why the Corporations and not the individual worker?
December 11th, 2006 at 9:00 pmBnF,
Apples and Oranges. One is a trade issue and the other is an immigration issue.
All countries have immigration laws. This is to insure that immigrants come to there countries and are productive citizens instead of draining their social programs.
