Nigeria to ban ‘any form of association among gays.’

“Lawmakers in Nigeria are debating a bill that would ban same-sex marriage and any form of association among gays, even sharing a meal at a restaurant,” the AP reports. “Few in Nigeria’s deeply closeted gay community have publicly opposed the legislation, which proposes penalties of up to five years in prison and is widely expected to pass.”

The Nigerian government better ban soy-based products too.

There sure is a lot of insecure male leadership in the world.

  4. AshenShard says:

Not that I’m supporting what Nigeria is doing, but to all those in this country who suggest if we don’t like things we should leave, and also ‘hate the gays’ … if Nigeria passes this bill, there will now be somewhere for you to go if you don’t like the fact that the majority of United Statesians support equality for all.

    Hi Daryll!
Sounds like there are some serious employment oportunities for you in an erotic (oops, sorry little fella, I mean exotic) land…

This is why a couple of chritianist parishes in virginia want to affliate with a nigerian bishop who supports this legislation. It’s all about hatred with these people

And Daryll shows up, right on cue.

So, Daryll, you would have people reduced to non-personhood simply because they, as God’s precious creations, are gay.

Your god makes a lot of mistakes, doesn’t he?

  13. ForTruth says:

You know Daryll, if I actually thought about gay sex, like you do, I would be repulsed too. But I don’t think about gay sex. Whatever people do in their own privacy is not for me to judge. Its for God to judge, not you either. You don’t know what God judges from a 3000 year old book. Heck, rules change over time. Where’s the updated modern version?

Let’s assume, for the sake of the argument, that this is true.

Why do you even bloody care?

Yes, god said it is an abomination in his eyes. So? The problem would be between god, and those people who are committing the abomination because we are talking about consenting adults.

Sex between consenting adults is a private affair. Private. How, when, where, and with whom is their problem, not yours, or any body else’s for that matter. It is a disgrace that Nigeria, with so many pressing problems, makes a priority out of singling out gays.

  42. Bob Evans says:

I lived in Nigeria for a while. It is a huge, complicated country beset by tribal and religious divides and weakly governed save when the military takes over as it does from time to time. At the same time, it enjoys a competent civil service whose mandarins manage to sustain some order despite the occasional idiocy of their political masters.

I suspect that the proposed anti-gay legislation is political kabuki that will never be enacted or, if enacted will never be enforced. The Nigerian Federation works only when the politicians in power accept and endure with good grace the extraordinary social, tribal and religious diversity of the place and work creatively with the extraordinary economic strengths and weaknesses of the one country in Africa that may become – I believe will become – the “black power” within the vast and troubled continent of Africa.

As for the gay legislation nonsense, I lived in a Nigerian world in which I was expected to hold hands with male friends rather as George Bush does with his well-robed Saudi paramours. On return to Canada I found it unnecessary to avoid soy products or pink shirts in order to sustain my fragile heterosexuality.

Nigerian guys hold hands. Some are gay, most not. If the Nigerian Government wants to smoke out and clobber gays I have to wonder how it will succeed in doing this.

    Kabuki, methinks.

Tell ya what once the law is enacted you travel to Nigeria with another guy. Tell everyone you’re gay then rent an apartment together and move in. Let us know how it works out.

My snarky point is once a law is on the books any petty local official with a badge can enforce it and that means no gay man or woman in nigeria is safe.

Fela Kuti the musician was subject to military and police violence, his mom died because cops threw her of the balcony. She was in her late 70ties. He made public the corruption of the rulers in Nigeria and their ties to the US.

You are right, but sometimes putting in a well organized thought in response to certain comments sometimes allows the conversation to calm down and become more of a discussion rather than a bashing contest.
Whether or not they respond positively, at the very least responding to them in a measured and thoughtful way allows one to get their thoughts together and make some sense as to what different topics mean to them. It is good practice, especially for ones mind.
Oh, and it is a really good way to procrastinate when you really should be doing something else, like writing a paper. :-p
