“The Bush administration asked an appeals court Wednesday to overrule a federal judge and allow the White House to keep secret any records of visitors to Vice President Dick Cheney’s residence and office.”

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) “underwent emergency brain surgery overnight after falling ill at the Capitol and was in critical condition early this morning, introducing a note of uncertainty over control of the Senate.” CNN reports Johnson has been diagnosed with a congenital arteriovenous malformation.

Two major studies of male circumcision in Africa have found that the simple surgical procedure reduces the risk of HIV infection by half — a hugely important result that is likely to prompt many African nations hard hit by AIDS to promote it as a means to control the epidemic.”

Yesterday President Bush and Vice President Cheney met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said that they “do not favor adding significant numbers of troops to Iraq.”

Karl Rove “disclosed during a Washington speaking engagement last week that he will not return to his lifetime profession as a political consultant when he leaves the White House. Rove referred to himself as ‘a former political consultant’ and said that he was leaving the game.”

This year is set to be the sixth warmest worldwide since records began, stoked by global warming linked to human activities,” a new report by the British Meteorological Office finds.

Former CNN news division chief, Eason Jordan, is starting a “one-stop-shopping clearinghouse” for Iraq information at www.iraqslogger.com. “The name of his new venture, he says, was inspired by a Donald Rumsfeld reference to this war being a ‘long, hard slog.’”

The Bush administration’s handling of a Hurricane Katrina housing program was “a legal disaster,” according to a federal judge. The judge “ordered officials to explain a computer system that can neither precisely count evacuees nor provide reasons why they had been denied aid.”

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) will not be speaking in Miami today on ‘The Need for Assimilation,’ following an “alleged threat made against the restaurant where he was scheduled to speak.” “I knew speaking your mind could be dangerous in Havana. I guess it’s equally dangerous to do so in Miami. Apparently, there isn’t much of a difference between the two anymore,” Tancredo said.

And finally: Rumors that Jenna Bush is dating 25-year-old PR student from Buenos Aires are false. “Sources acquainted with Jenna say she’s still involved with longtime boyfriend Henry Hager. Laura Bush’s spokeswoman Susan Whitson even broke her usual no-comment-on-the-twins policy: ‘We have found that young men who talk to the press and claim to be the boyfriend of Barbara or Jenna are just expressing wishful thoughts.’”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Probably the computer system is from a bussiness owned by a crony (relative?) of the Republican GOP.

“The Bush administration asked an appeals court Wednesday to overrule a federal judge and allow the White House to keep secret any records of visitors to Vice President Dick Cheney’s residence and office.”

Um, no. Like Larry says, that’s my house…

  23. Zooey says:

    Definition:
A cerebral arteriovenous malformation is a birth defect in which there is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain.

    Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
The cause of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is unknown. The condition occurs when arteries in the brain connect directly to nearby veins without having the normal vessels (capillaries) between them.

Arteriovenous malformations vary in their size and location within the brain.

There are often no symptoms until the AVM ruptures. This results in sudden bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). In more than half of patients with AVM, hemorrhage is the first symptom. Depending on the location and the severity of the bleed, the hemorrhage can be very disabling or even deadly.

Symptoms of an AVM rupture are similar to a stroke, and occur because of a lack of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms may also occur when large AVMs press on the brain tissue, which can cause nerve damage and blood flow problems.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations occur in less than 1% of people. Although the condition is present at birth, symptoms may occur at any age. Hemorrhages occur most often in people aged 15 – 20, but can also occur later in life. Some patients with an AVM also have a cerebral aneurysm.

    Treatment:
A bleeding AVM is a medical emergency. The goal of treatment is to prevent further complications by controlling bleeding and seizures and, if possible, removing the AVM.

Treatments include open brain surgery, endovascular treatment, and radiosurgery. Some treatment options are used together.

Open brain surgery is removes the malformation through an opening made in the skull. It must be done by a highly skilled vascular neurosurgeon. Possible complications include brain swelling, hemorrhage, stroke, or seizure.

Embolization (endovascular treatment) is the injection of a glue-like substance into the abnormal vessels to stop bleeding into the AVM. This may be an alternative if surgery can not be done.

Stereotactic radiosurgery is another alternative. This procedure delivers radiation directly to the area of the AVM. It is particularly useful for small deep AVMS which are difficult to remove by surgery.

Anti-convulsant medications, such as phenytoin, are usually prescribed if seizures occur.

    Prognosis:
Approximately 10% of cases in which hemorrhage is the first symptom are deadly. Some patients may have permanent seizures and neurological problems.

  28. katy says:

tripmaster – from what i heard on sam seder, the artery was “malformed” and then ruptured (hemorraged, yes), but a stroke is usually caused by a clot, so not exactly… just some anomaly that caused the vein to bleed which causes pressure in the brain (in this case) so they had to go in and stop the bleed, clean out the excess blood – will have to fix that “arteriovenous malformation” at another time… i hear it is not uncommon procedure and he is healthy and prognosis is good…

i’m off to chicagoland for the day – take care – play nice, all!

Yes, of course you’re right. An upward trend in the shape of a hockey stick stretching over a period of 1,000 years should be ignored if there are one or two years in the past decade that the temperatures don’t continue to climb. 35. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Katy,

There are two types of strokes: ischemic (which is the one to which you are referring), in which a thrombosis (clot) obstructs a blood vessel in the brain, and hemorrhagic, in which a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain tissue.

It sounds like Johnson’s PR crew are trying desperately to tap dance around the word ’stroke’ and all the negative connotations associated with it, but whatever you choose to call it, bleeding within the brain is very serious, damaging the brain tissue both with its presence and by the pressure it builds up against the surrounding tissue.

Founding Fathers Wanted President To Be A Figurehead Position Only!
    Thursday 14th of December 2006
    by Jay Randal

The founding fathers of the United States of America wanted the president to be a figurehead position, with only symbolic trappings of power, and the 2 branches of Congress to be a check on executive power grabs, so the present membership of the House and Senate have betrayed the Constitution by giving absolute power to the president, who can rule like despotic dictator.

The presidency was never supposed to declare wars, nor to have the authority to decide when wars ended, since the Constitution clearly vests that power in the Congress, with ability to cut off funds for misadventures, so allowing the president to dictate terms of warfare violates the foundations of democratic government in Washington, DC, and enables the virus of dictatorship.

If the new Congress fails to muzzle the out-of-control president, by failing to rescind unconstitutional power improperly granted to the president, then the United States government would no longer function ethically for the people, and it becomes a fascistic abomination.

( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

The Military Commissions Act of 2006 effectively removes the U.S. as a State Party to the Geneva Conventions.

The Bush administration’s argument is that they are not “enemy combatants” as defined by the Geneva Convention because they were not uniformed soldiers. Regardless, it is Bush, Gonzales and the rest of these immoral folks trying to somehow give themselves the ability to torture humans.

Comment by And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid — December 14, 2006 @ 10:55 am

However, under the Geneva Conventions, citizens (not uniformed soldiers) are to be afforded hearings in civil courts, not military tribunals. That’s one of the reasons the Military Commissions Act of 2006 removed the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights for detainees.

Prove what? That I think the citizens of the U.S. are the best of any nation I have been to? How is that propaganda?

Look at the open exchange of ideas on this page. That should tell you something.

If you want to “bash” the citizens of the U.S. then go ahead.

  79. Democrat Soldier says:

I just love it! The “Swift Boat Liars for Bush” have been fined $299,500 for ” failed to register and file disclosure reports as federal political committees, and accepted contributions in violation of federal limits and source prohibitions”.

Of course, they weren’t the only ones:
    League of Conservation Voters 527 and 527II — $180,000
    MoveOn.org Voter Fund — $ 150,000

  80. Zooey says:

    Dem Soldier,

    That’s great!

Question: Are they talking on the MSM about the Swift Boaters being fined, or the new Jack the Ripper in England?

    Just sayin’

May be my last post for the day, global stuff going to hit the Wash, and Oreg. Coast…Heavy rain’s now in my area and wind’s expected to be 70 to 90 miles an hour….I was here in the Columbus Day storm in the 60’s and that was not nearly as high of wind’s and turned out to be a dreadful mess..Send Blessings, we need them..

I hope you weather the storm well. We’re expecting the same storm later. Let us know you’re ok.
