With Mary Cheney Pregnant, Bush Won’t Say Whether He Still Opposes Gay Adoption

Mary and HeatherAs a presidential candidate in 1999, Bush stated his unequivocal opposition to gay adoption. From the AP, 3/23/99:

Bush said he opposes allowing gay couples to adopt. “I believe children ought to be adopted in families with a woman and a man who are married,” he said Monday.

The governor also declined to take a position on whether children already adopted by gays or lesbians should be removed from those homes. “I have no idea whether the children ought to be removed or not removed,” he said. “The question is whether I’m for gay adoption. And the answer is, I’m not.”

Then Mary Cheney, Vice President Cheney’s daughter, got pregnant. The child will be raised by Mary Cheney and her partner Heather Poe. ABC News asked the White House “over and over, if the President, as he declared in 1999, still opposed same sex couples adopting children.” The White House would not answer.

Here’s what Bush had to say a few days ago to People Magazine:

The Vice President took me aside and gave me the good news. He and his wife, Lynne, are very happy for Mary I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child. And I’m happy for her.

There must be something about Mary.

  2. Hardy Haberman says:

How will Bush play this with the “base”? Seems like they would be pretty disillusioned if they got the whole story. Of course they have had quiet a few “disillusionments” lately with Ted Haggard and others being outed.

Of course, being the daughter of a far-right Republican vice president and his far-right Republican softcore porn author wife, she would naturally be a loving soul to her child. All other children born or raised in the homes of same-sex couples must be taken away from those godless hedonists as soon as possible. Why? Because the right doesn’t believe that any of the rules or laws or moral values they impose on the rest of the country should have to apply to themselves. They’re special that way.

Answer the goddam question, you hypocritical jerk!!!

  5. Tom says:

GDumbya just doesn’t have time to push the anti-gay adoption agenda right now.

First of all, he is very busy looking for a “strategery for success” in Iraq — he’s only about three years late on that one.

Secondly, the anti-gay adoption issue is being preserved for 2007 and the next election cycle. Rove says it will help the Repubs retain the White House and regain Congress.

  6. anon says:

Notice that Bush didn’t say anything about the babies OTHER mother, Heather!! He didn’t declare that he thought Heather would be a loving soul or that he was happy for her……

And, his quote from 1999 sounds to me like Bush opposes adoption by gays and also by single heteros.

  11. Jay Randal says:

GOPers are certified hypocrites on Gay issues, because they are against Gay couples raising children unless it’s one of their own family doing it! Mary is a member of the elite, so she gets special treatment, but everybody else can drop dead to them!

  12. Jonathon says:

In the end, who really cares what Dubya thinks? He is a lame duck and without his rabid hard-right Congress behind him he can’t do a damn thing about gay marriage, gay adoption, etc.

Yeah, it is interesting to see the moonbats’ reaction to Mary’s pregnancy, but what will be even more interesting is when one of the Bush girls gets knocked up (unmarried, of course, and probably while drunk) and wants to have an abortion!

  13. upside00 says:

  17. Tom says:

GDumbya is probably pretty smug about Mary Cheney’s situation. He knows that his own drunken slut twins will get pregnant the old-fashioned way. Who knows? Perhaps one or both already has had an abortion (or two). That’d make GDumbya proud. Kinda like that girlfriend he had in college . . . the one for which he had to pay for an abortion.

  18. n69n says:

weird that he refers to her as a “loving soul” & not a “loving mother”

Maybe this will cause Laura and Dubya to adopt Brittany and Paris – then they would have a twin set of twins!

  21. tarazan says:

Of course a big issue and a big fuss was made during last election’s debate between Senator Edward and Dick Cheney when the Senator mentioned that Cheney has a gay daughter….they called Edward all kind of names…and he was attacked by MRS. Cheney as an evil man…well, now we know not just his daughter was gay….but also getting pregrnant and and raising a baby with her partner. Poor Edwards crossed the line….!!

  22. Tuber says:

The current “conservative” philosophy on gays is the same as it is with any group (Muslims, Arabs, “brown” people, the poor) that they feel that they are morally and/or physically superior to: demonize, marginalize, and kill if the opportunity presents itself and you feel that you can get away with it (bonus points if you can get someone else to kill them for you).

It’s a sad and self-defeating philosophy and I for one will be happy as a clam when it is purged from our national consciousness. As for Mary Cheney, she deserves every ounce of the grief that she is now getting from her “friends”. She chose them, she backed them, and she ignored their hate and disgust for her and other gays while simultaneously doing their bidding and aiding them in acquiring and maintaining power. My only hope is that the evil hypocrisy that both she and her father share is not genetic and won’t be passed on to the child.

As for those who hate gays and want to make their lives miserable, quit projecting and go get laid. Obviously, you need to.

  23. ForTruth says:

Mary Cheney is gay because her father’s name is Dick.

  24. Bluestocking says:

Why should anyone be surprised at Bush’s response to Mary Cheney’s pregnancy? How often do you hear your average run-of-the-mill bigot say something like, “Yeah, ________ are no damn good, but my friend So-And-So is all right.” You actually hear that more often that you would expect, and this is just a variation on that theme. The bigot is either unable or unwilling to grasp the fact that their perception of _______ is based on an undeserved and prejudicial overgeneralization which no more applies to most ___________ than it applies to So-And-So — instead, the bigot chooses to believe that So-And-So is somehow an exception to the rule and therefore exempt from prejudicial treatment. Sadly, their acquaintance with So-And-So usually isn’t enough to change their prejudicial views — instead, they condescendingly believe that their prejudicial views simply don’t apply to So-And-So by virtue of their acquaintance. In this specific example, Dubya’s statement suggests that he considers Mary Cheney’s status as his Vice President’s daughter enough sanction to make it all right for her to raise a child with her partner although he disapproves of it for other lesbian couples.

    1 in 4 = 25%

    Bush’s approval rating = 32%

The 25% of gays are in the same group as Bush’s fanatical followers. It just goes to prove that being gay doesn’t make you any smarter than a dumb red neck.

It’s easier when it’s some non-specific “gay folks” out there in Blue State land somewhere. It’s harder when you meet a person and actually get to know them.

Is there anything to be read into his phrase “I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child”? Soul as opposed to parent or mother? Cuz whatever her partner’s status may be towards the child, Mary is going to be his/her mother, unequivocally.

The trolls have been notably silent on this thread today. But then trolling decreased as the mood went sour over Iraq, and even more after Republicans lost the mid-term elections.

It is worth stating that the very same laws banning same-sex marriage that were championed by the Republicans have finally come home to roost for Mary Cheney: She was involved in helping her father during his 2004 campaign, and has refused to speak publicly about gay rights.

Why would any gay or lesbian vote for the very people who enact the laws that make them second-class citizens is a mystery to me. In Mary Cheney’s case, I understand that blood is thicker than water, but still…

  37. John Gilpins says:

The lingering question is: Who’s the father. I think Heather Poe can be ruled out.

One thing is certain: George W. is not the father. Who would want a kid fathered by George? The kid would be lucky to have an IQ in the double digits.

Let’s hope the sperm bank isn’t run by ex-Bush administration officials. We can’t trust these folks with anything, including semen.

The biggest talent politicians have is taking as long as possible to NOT answer a yes or no question.

And I think its funny, you notice Bush avoided using the word “parent” to describe Cheney’s daughter’s relationship to her child.. most people would have said “I’m sure she will be a loving parent to her child”… Bush is desparately afraid of alienating the 20 percenter “red state loyalfist” crowd.

Its all he has left. Lets face it, dogmatic religious war zealots are about the only base he has left, other than the his “free-base”…

  42. Whitey HermAphrodite says:

Your welcome. Right, it doesnt involve adoption because Cheney’s partner CAN’T adopt the child because of the very same politicians who cater to the knuckledraggers who keep her father in power. The hipocritical irony of it all ( I know the only irony you guys understand is depleted uranium, and hipocracy isnt a word that even exists in the right wing vocabulary) is that
her partner would almost certainly have adopted the child, to get the ability to make health decisions for her and whatnot, if it wasnt for daddy’s reichwing buddies..

Sorry to distract you from the bang up job YOUR commander in chief is doing in Iraq and the rest of the world.

Heres some nice articles for you to read about it.

“Specter of Iraqi proxy war spooks Washington” (Proxy is a big word Tanky, you comphrehende?)
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061214/wl_mideast_afp/ussaudiiraqiran

“1.5 million people (4 percent of the population) flee Iraq”

“Tribal leaders don’t trust Iraq soldiers”

On the other hand, I hear a professional wrestler who just came back from the green zone made some very positive comments about the situation….

I certainly think I’m not alone in my belief that a steroid addled man who gives other men wedgies for a living and wears diapers to work is a perfectly reliable and credible source of information.

    WTF are you smoking?
Under what circumstances would Cheney’s partner be adopting the child if there was no barrier to doing this ?
You understand Cheney is the mother right ? It is already her child as per the whole childbirth exercise.

So unless she wants to put the child up for adoption to have it go to another couple which happens to be herself WTF is being denied to someone here ?

Generally the issue with gay rights is the rights that straight people have which gays do not. Try playing this situation out with Cheney’s girlfriend replaced with Cheney’s boyfriend. See how ridiculous you sound when you’re bitching about him being unable to adopt his girlfirend’s child.
    And lay off the gear.

  44. Zooey says:

    Tank,

You’re probably long gone, but here goes. Normally in this type situation, whether a gay or straight couple, the parent not giving birth to the child would adopt the child. It’s like a step-parent adoption. That way the child has two legally recognized parents, and both parents have rights and obligations to the child. And in the event of the parents splitting up, or the death of a parent, the child is on firm legal ground in regard to custody, child support and inheritance.

  45. Tank says:

And in the event of the parents splitting up, or the death of a parent, the child is on firm legal ground in regard to custody, child support and inheritance.

Right so little miss Cheney would be in need of such a law so she can reduce her rights as a mother in the event of breakup (as is normal), claim child support from someone who’s not the parent (as normal), and because she’s someone who would otherwise have to draw up a will to accomplish the same thing (where would a VPs daughter find a lawyer).

Like I said… adoption doesn’t apply here. You may as complain little miss gay Cheney is hard done by offshore drilling rights.

  46. Zooey says:

Ok Tank, frickin’ nevermind. Have your little tantrum, or whatever it is you’re having.

My concern is for the child, and it’s best for the child that if Mary’s partner wants to adopt, she be allowed. I’ve only been involved in countless adoptions, divorces, custody actions, and probates, so what the f*ck would I know about anything?

Sorry, I tried to give you a little information on a non-emotional basis, and it apparently was not what you were looking for.

  47. harrison says:

Children need a mother and a father……..not two mothers or two fathers………….gays shoulod not allowed to adopt any children…let them get a good dog or cat…………..

  48. Johnathon says:

Wow….this is great! Finally, people are getting to see that Bush / Cheney and republicans are not the paragons of virtue and morality as they have tried to legislate from the start when they illegally seized political power over this nation in 2000. The republican party preyed upon the one dimensional voting habits of the religious right wing to assimilate them into their voter base in order to seize political power in 2000. That is because the religious right wing of this nation will vote for anyone who claims to be conservative, moral, Christian or against abortion. It must be difficult being a republican in 2007. To be a republican in 2007, you must concurrently believe the following. Jesus loves you but shares your same hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery. Iran was a good country when Ford and Rumsfeld and Cheney, along with General Electric, gave them our nuclear technology in the 1970’s. Good guys when Cheney did business with them in the 1990’s. But, then bad guys when Bush junior needed a prop for his re-election campaign as the “war president”. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which should include “banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet”. It’s OK to be republican lesbian but if you are Democrat then you are someone with a gay liberal agenda. God Bless America!!!
