Watch it:

Cheney and Rumsfeld have been close political allies for decades. In 1969, Rumsfeld hired Cheney to “his first job in the federal government” as an assistant at the Office of Economic Opportuntiy. Five years later, Rumsfeld became White House Chief of Staff and made Cheney his deputy.

Digg It!

Transcript:

In his regard for our people in uniform, in his unwavering strength through unprecedented challenges, in his example of leadership and patriotic service, I believe the record speaks for itself: Don Rumsfeld is the finest Secretary of Defense this nation has ever had.

    Pathetic.

If it wasn’t so sad, it would be funny.

  3. buzzbomb Says:

First Bush, now Cheney. Who’s next? Maybe Condi saying how Donnie was the greatest lover she’s ever had.

  4. hellinabucket Says:

I believe Cheney has forgotten about Henry Stimson.

  5. Rebel In CA Says:

So let me get this straight:

BushCo just spent millions (Previously earmarked for Iraq Victory bash) of taxpayers’ money to celebrate the life and times of a total warmongering moron who

1- Knew things that he did know, and knew things that he did not know, and did not know things that he did not know.

    2- Told us the weapons of mass destruction were around Baghda and Tikrik and somewhat to the North, the South, the East and the West of there;

3- Who believed the war was so simple that it was complex, and

4- Insisited that we must “stay the course” and then changed his tune after he was shit-canned.

Like I said before in the other related post; Bullshit at its finest.

  7. Bullsmith Says:

Why does Dick Cheney hate American history? (And everyone in it)

  8. Gene Says:

…and that’s why Bush axed him?

    Stupid is as stupid does.

  9. dlet Says:

First Bush and now Cheney……maybe he WAS the greatest Secretary of Defense there ever was……I am starting to believe them because they are sooooo trustworthy and they are never wrong…..NNNAAAAHHHHH.

  10. Emily Says:

Didn’t George Marshall serve as Secretary of Defense for a while? I bet he was better than Rummy was. (My dog would have been better than Rummy.)

  11. hellinabucket Says:

George Marshall served one year. He was Secretary of State when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Which is something that will never be placed on Rummy’s wall.

Henry Stimson was the only Sec. Def for WWII. He was the guiding force behind waking this sleeping giant up to kick the industrial war machine into gear. he was also a Republican that worked under a Democrat. Yeah, when the obstacles are big enough partisan politics takes a back seat.

  12. ItsJustKarma Says:

Those guys are purebred fascist with a Nazi rethoric even Göbbels would have envied. It seems to be obvious that
Dick Göring’s ‘Nation’ (The Thousand Year Reich) has just begun in the year 2000.
It is exactly the same insanity spreading as under Hitler in
Germany. Celebrating 3000 dead and thousands of wounded Americans…
    Sieg Heil!!!

  13. swede Says:

You have got to be kidding me! this whole thing is pathetic. Iam truly amazed at the arrogance of these people, please, please begin the investigations now on pre war data, we are up to thousands of fathers, sons daughters husband and wives lost because of their negligence, greed, and lack of moral conscience. Do you realize that in the 6 yrs this knucklehead has been in power their has not been 1 program to benefit anybody in our country. All this president has done is wiretap our country, walk away from the Kyoto agreement, try to rape the social security system, added signing statements to any piece of cooperative legislation, disbanded habeus corpus, incited a religious sectarian war, ruined our reputation across the world, tried to sell our ports to a Dubai company and lauged at all of us when he said “these WOMD must be around here somwhere !!” When are we going to wake up! this administration is an atrocity led by a megalomaniac who is not living in the real world with a Stepford wife who says the press doesn’t report any of the good he’s done!, you have got to be kidding me ! America please wake up, you are not a patriot or an american if you do not get behind impeaching this whole band of fools that have ruined our currency, made billions on their oil and Carlyle military investments and will walk away safe and secure because they own the Supreme Court. I am truly saddened by our whole demise as a nation.

A passionate concernerd and scared AMERICAN

  14. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

Hmmm… you’d think one of those former Defense Secretaries (fka War Secretaries) who actually won a war would be considered to be more praiseworthy. Shows what I know about what it takes to run a war.

  15. pete Says:

and bush is the best president this nation has ever had.
what a f’n piece of shit.

  16. ForTruth Says:

If I was Cheney, with my bank account all fortified and piled high with cash, I would tell Rummy how fewkin great he was too. Hell, Rummy helped Cheney get even more rich.

  17. Yikes Says:

That reminds me to dig up the old videos of The Three Stooges.

  18. Marie Says:

Yeah, his record speaks for itself all right, so says Cheney upon exit from his underground cave.
    Are they all nuckin’ futz?

  19. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

...In his regard for our people in uniform, (by NOT listening to the commanders in the field; in responding to soldiers asking why they had to dig scrap medal out of dumps to fortify their vehicles by declaring we go to war with the army we had, not the one we wish we had, etc). in his unwavering strength through unprecedented challenges, (no matter what the challenge, his “strategy” remained the same) in his example of leadership (based on his ideology of “transformation” and a refusal to allow the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to report DIRECTLY to the President as mandated by law) and patriotic (with patriots like this, who needs enemies?) service…

  20. ron Says:

by finest i think he meant worst.

  21. ItsJustKarma Says:

Words just can’t describe what’s going on here anymore.
Those fascists are insulting the ‘American Ideal’ and the
    majority of good spirited Americans.
They want a civil war at home. Edgar Cayce once said in a reading that the US will come to and end in the 21st century.
I believe him now more than ever.

  22. Erroll Says:

The Department of Defense was more accurately described by its original name in the 1940s, which was the Department of War. But the Pentagon most likely realized at the time that that title was too realistic and changed it to its present deceptive name. The DoD deserves to be changed back to the Department of War so the people in this country can ponder what happens when this country invades another sovereign nation under extremely specious reasons. Bring the troops home- safely- now.

  23. Mr Nice Says:

This is the finest defense of a secreatary, in a nation that was had.

  24. ForTruth Says:

I agree, to hell with these Orwellian fools, bring our troops home now, stop spilling blood and treasure in the sand.

  25. ForTruth Says:

At least they aren’t going to be dragging him around everywhere for 2 weeks congratulating him like they did with Reagon’s dead ass, rotton, smelly, falling off the bone, corpse.

  26. ItsJustKarma Says:

    LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

US Army might break Goodyear strike

‘The US Army is considering measures to force striking workers back to their jobs at a Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant in Kansas in the face of a looming shortage of tyres for Humvee trucks and other military equipment used in Iraq and Afghanistan.’

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16226231/

  27. Juizzee Says:

BUT–WHOAH, MAN, WHAT THE?!? How can these men say these things? I am actually shocked…flabbergasted even. I need to lie down.

  28. carollt Says:

With Secretary of Defense like Rumsfeld, who needs Osama? Rummy has done a lot of damage to our country and more Americans are dead because of Rummy’s and Bush’s folly in Iraq than any terrorist ever killed.

  29. Zooey Says:

This is the finest defense of a secreatary, in a nation that was had.
    Comment by Mr Nice

    Excellent….

  30. Exley Says:

I have to disagree with Cheney here. I would say the greatest Defense Secretary this nation has ever had was Caspar Weinberger. Together with Ronald Reagan, Weinberger restored the United States military strength and helped bring about the downfall of the Soviet Union. While Reagan was the man who won the Cold War, Secretary Weinberger undoubtedly was a key component in helping President Reagan achieve that victory over communism.

  31. ForTruth Says:

US Army might break Goodyear strike

And the good dumb folks of the USA realize they aren’t as free as they thought, the hidden police state rears its ugly head.

  32. upside00 Says:

I wonder how many of the military that were present for this had to stifle their gag reflex?

BTW, if you are ever slightly north of Taos NM, and smell a rotten scumbag, that would be Rummy’s other home. Just outside of Arroyo Secco, where the sheep are scared!

  33. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

“…right up there with Brownie, DeLay, and turdblossom.”

  34. Colin Says:

I want what Cheney is smoking.

  35. Juizzee Says:

#33. But, of course, Rumsfeld comes in as a close second, right?

  36. ForTruth Says:

I will be flabbergasted if the Army physically forces striking American workers back to work, “make me” I would tell them. How about meeting the workers demands, and all pulling together here? How about the corporate greed mongers give a little to help thier phucking country. This is really getting me angry, and I’m usually all funny and crap.

  37. RealityCheck Says:

Could this mean that Cheney doesn’t have any friends or family that have experienced extraordinary rendition?

    Just wondering…

  38. ForTruth Says:

IF the Army intervenes on striking workers, thats it, the beginning of a civil war, the workers against the elites.

  39. hellinabucket Says:

Exley, go look at the record of Mr. Stimson and then compare it to Weinberger. If you still think you have a case after that then we’ll discuss. Either way, Cheney couldn’t be more wrong.

  40. Zooey Says:

US Army might break Goodyear strike
    Comment by ItsJustKarma

It’s hard to even let that penetrate into my brain, it’s so unbelievable.

  41. wmd Says:

someone should ask cheny about hes “LAST THROES” statement

  42. Bluedog49 Says:

I think his “regard for the people in uniform” was best exemplified by this famous quote: “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want.”

Now, that’s what neocons call “showing the troops respect.”

  43. turlte Says:

Then why’d Dubya give him the boot?

  44. Exley Says:

US Army might break Goodyear strike

As Calvin Coolidge said in 1919 when, as governor of Massachusetts, he was confronted with a strike by Boston policeman:

“There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime.”

  45. Joe Bua Says:

This meme has now gone from laughable to once again not laughable.

    Worst President Ever.

    Worst Sec. of Defense Ever.

    Worst and scariest VP ever.

  46. Bluedog49 Says:

I believe the military has been used a number of times to break strikes. I think it has even happened during periods when we were not at war, but i could be wrong about that.

  47. Exley Says:

#43, HiB, I was limiting myself to Defense Secretaries. I wasn’t including Secretaries of War. If I were to do, Stimson has to be right there at the top, most likely number one.

  48. ItsJustKarma Says:

Will we ever be able to say ‘I am proud to be an American’ again?

  49. hellinabucket Says:

See Exley, once again you limit yourself. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

  50. jurassicpork Says:

The best one we’ve ever had? Was that the first or second go-round?

They should’ve given him a 140,000 gun salute.

Anyway, it’s been a while but I finally did a new Twenty Bucks, Same as in Town post. I hope it was worth the wait, because I have some great links up, so…

Oh, you weren’t waiting for it? OK. Carry on, then…

  51. ForTruth Says:

    Exley,

The Goodyear strike is not against the safety of the public, sorry, aint the same. It’s against the safety of corporate interests. No hummer tire, no go out in hummer, stay at base. Sounds safe to me.

  52. Gregor Samsa Says:

Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush, Perle, etc. have all been good friends for decades.

What we are seen is a group of all friends patting each other on the back and complementing each other for their mutual allegiance.

Of course, in their minds, what is good for them is good for the country.

  53. Jackie Says:

I wonder if the families of our dead troops agree. These brave men/women died thinking they were fighting to protect the US from WMD yet that was a lie. Cheney never served his country with his 5 deferments and Rummy taught class and never saw combat. What an example of military leadership. Bush is just a drunken coward who’s Daddy used his position to get his idiot son out of the military.

  54. ForTruth Says:

Well I’m a young pup at 38, so the idea of the Army breaking up a strike is new to me.

  55. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Time to get off the blogs and into the streets.

  56. ForTruth Says:

Exley, didn’t someone cut your nuts off last night?

  57. JPV Says:

Is this any surprise coming from Dick Cheney? By his standards, they have accomplished their Noecon/Zionist goals. They have destabilized Iraq and caused the genocide of countless Arabs. All the while, effectively squashing public dissent.

Heck of a job there Rummy.

  58. Exley Says:

ForTruth, A Taft-Hartley injunction against striking steel workers was upheld as valid and constitutional in 1959 by the U.S. Supreme Court when there was not even a “hot” shooting war going on.

    STEELWORKERS v. UNITED STATES, 361 U.S. 39 (1959)

    This current situation seems similar.

  59. Exley Says:

#60, ForTruth…Not that I am aware of….Must have been a dream you were having.

  60. ForTruth Says:

    Well Exley,

Using the courts sounds more appropriate. Does the army need to be involved, or can the riot police handle it?

  61. hellinabucket Says:

Since there is no Declaration of War, the legal hurdles for the Army to proceed are large. For the Army to call on Congress and the President to even consider this shows the piss poor planning and execution of this 6 month adventure. Or at least that’s what Rummy said. Hell, why don’t we just get some of that oil revenue to pay for the tyres?

Shouldn’t need much though because it’s just a few dead enders and they are in their last throes.

History will show what a complete failure this administration is. It will take decades for the American public to get this horrible taste out of our mouths and even longer for Republicans to shed this image of corporate greed and incompetence.

  62. ForTruth Says:

Yeah Exley must have been a dream…sorry.

  63. Exley Says:

#64, ForTruth….The MSNBC article says that the Army will seek a Taft-Hartley injunction. They are not going in there with tanks and bayonets. The Army will be going through the courts.

“According to Mr Hunter, the army is exploring a possible injunction under the Taft-Hartley Act to force the 200 Kansas workers back to their jobs.”

  64. hellinabucket Says:

So what your saying Exley is that something that took place in 1919 was found valid in 1959?

  65. ItsJustKarma Says:

“There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime.”
    Comment by Exley — December 15, 2006 @ 5:31 pm

And what exactly does not affect the ‘public safety’? A strike at the toilet paper plant? The crayon plant? The dog food processing plant?

Man if You want to apply 1919 statements into a 2006 scenario something is seriously wrong with your mind.
    We have workers rights nowadays,
Would a strike against breaking the rules of Equal
    Opportunity Employment
    not as well affect public
safety, only from the other side of the scale?
And finally, do you want our troops to die because of use of
malfabricated tyres as a result of miserable working conditions
    and underpaid workers?

It’s so funny that it seems to be always the welfare class that speaks up for the elite. It’s never the people that actually have to work hard for their money.

  66. ForTruth Says:

    Thanks Exley,

I was too lazy to read it all, you picked up my slack.

  67. Exley Says:

#70 No problem, ForTruth….Okay, folks…Have a good evening. I have procrastinated too long. I must go face the crowded malls and the dreaded Christmas shopping.

  68. Michael Jones Says:

OMG, did Rumsferatu finally run out of blood, or did someone sneak up on him with a wooden stake and a clove of garlic? This ceremony has all the pomp of an official state funeral, so maybe that’s what it is. Rejoice, rejoice my brethren, for even vampires can actually die. Now, if someone will open a curtain and shed a little sunlight on succubus Cheney, global terror will indeed be defeated.

  69. Exley Says:

#68 HiB, Well, sort of…Coolidge’s statement made in 1919 in response to a police strike in Boston was, in essence codified nationally in the Taft-Hartley Labor Act of 1947, which allowed for an injunction upon a showing to a judge that a strike was having an adverse effect on public safety/national security. The Supreme Court had an opportunity to decided on the constitutionality on the law in 1959 during a steelworkers’ strike. So, in a way, Coolidge was ahead of his time.

Okay, now I really do have to go…Good night, folks.

  70. ItsJustKarma Says:

Oh man, I am seriously relieved now:
The Labor-Management Relations Act, commonly known as the Taft-Hartley Act, is a United States federal law that severely restricts the activities and power of labor unions. The Act, still largely in effect, was sponsored by Senator Robert Taft and Representative Fred A. Hartley, Jr.. U.S. President Harry S. Truman described the act as a “slave-labor bill” and vetoed it, adding that it would “conflict with important principles of our democratic society”. The Senate followed the House of Representatives in overriding Truman’s veto on June 23, 1947, establishing the act as a law. The Taft-Hartley Act amended the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA, also known as the Wagner Act), which Congress had passed in 1935.
    from Wikipedia
It’s all good now. It’s just a military enforcement of the “slave-labor-bill”.

  71. Joe Bua Says:

    Rumsferatu.

    Classic.

  72. ItsJustKarma Says:

    Rumsferatu is brilliant.
But the bastard has more innocent blood on his hands then
Nosferatu who sucked some blood in the Fritz Lang movie

Cheney: Rumsfeld ‘Is the Finest Secretary of Defense This Nation Has Ever Had’

Yet all evidence proves otherwise. I long for the day when these assholes are nothing but a bad memory.

  80. Larry from C Says:

#33, Exley, Ronald Regan didn’t win the Cold War. The indomitable American worker, who paid his/her taxes won the Cold War. The Soviet economy crumbled under its own inefficiencies. The American economy soared. The tax base of our economy allowed us to develop a military arsenal that the Soviets simply couldn’t keep up with.

  81. Bluedog49 Says:

If Cheney thinks Rummy is the greatest, he must be the greatest. After all, Cheney is the guy who said, “My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators, ” and “Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.”

  82. Larry from C Says:

Exley, in the spirit of Ronald Regan…

“Mr. Bush, tear down those permanent military bases in Iraq!”

  83. Bluedog49 Says:

The people of the communist bloc wanted Big Macs and Levis. State Dept. and CIA estimates as early as 1978 estimated that the Soviet Bloc would crumble under its own weight by the end of the 80’s. The military buildup, which, incidently, began under Jimmy Carter, had less to do with the fall of the communist bloc than did market forces.

  98. No Smelly Bush Says:

You gotta love these hawks (military and chicken). A little history of Dick Cheney (Bush’s balls): Cheney was of military age and a supporter of the Vietnam War but he did not serve in the war, applying for and receiving five draft deferments. On May 19, 1965, Cheney was classified as 1-A , “available for service” by the Selective Service. On October 26, 1965 the Selective Service lifted the constraints on drafting childless married men. Cheney and his wife then had a child after which he applied for and received, a reclassification of 3-A, gaining him a final draft deferment.

  99. ForTruth Says:

And the child Cheney had to get out of Vietnam turned out to be some good karma, in my opinion.

  100. P'od Says:

I wish someone more learned than I would set the record straight on Ronnie Ray-Gun and his fabled “winning of the cold war”. I’ve spoken to many Europeans about their perception of US influence (Ray-Guns in particular) related to the demise of the Soviet Union. (After all it happened in their back yard.) All stated that it was laughable that Ray-Gun claimed victory for something he had little if anything to do with. A woman from East Germany laughed perhaps the heartiest. Basically, her view is that the USSR ate itself long before it admitted it and could no longer contain its people. She also warned that the US could be on the same path!

Interesting that the European acquaintances gave tremendous credit to Pope John Paul 11 for being the final breaking straw. Afghanistan didn’t help their cause either and here is where the US deserves a bit of credit. Osama who?

BTW- Lech Walesa (sp?) is given far more credit than Ray-Gun in splitting the USSR. Revevant given the current BushCo union busting angle.

I have been so unsettled this past week. When I came upon this post I was sick. Ashamed is the emotion I felt. Ashamed for America. Ashamed for my self. Ashamed of torture. Ashamed of Katrina. Ashamed of Bush. Ashamed of Cheney. Ashamed of America. Shame. I felt ashamed today because this is not the country that I belove. This is not the country that I learned about in history books. What I do know is that we are the government and if we the government are behaving in a shameful way then it is time for a time out. We need to to treat this government like an unruly child and give it boundries. We need to suspend this government or expel those in office. We are the government and if those in office continue to make bad choices then as a parent would, we must take away the car.

The other day, Bush compared himself with Harry Truman. I recall Truman also used unusual force (or threat of it) to stop strikers during the Korean War. Maybe the President’s allusion to Truman was intended in multiple ways.

But wasn’t Truman eventually cited for overstepping his authority by the Supreme Court?

  110. Davis Says:

Quite a compliment from the shittiest president ever

  111. Ted Says:

you go to war with the rummy you have not the rummy you want, said Dick the shootist. Now that all have come a cropper, change the rummy that you have, so you don’t have the rummy that started the war, redeclare war, and off to accomplish the mission redux.

Meanwhile back at the Crawford, staying the course is agreed upon with Barney, and Lara, so that Condy can come out and read the lines Olmert has hastily written(coaching Perodi takes time, don’t mention the Pope) on the back of the brown envelope; No talking, to Syria, and Iran!

On goes the charade, down go the wounded and dead Gis, apart blow the Iraqis, and all is well for the next ten fifteen hours, before the routine is replayed again.

This is the measure of success, when special interests and idiots get together organizing a country!

  112. BruntLIVE Says:

Cheney and Bush represent how GOP men are, even in the face of truthful events they still are stiff-necked toward reality. Just think of GOP wives and kids, how can you live in this kind of environment. No wonder they get divorced and cheated on.

  113. Shaun Stevens Says:

Why are all these people against Rumsfeld?

  114. Fools on the Hill Says:

    The war profiteers love Rummy.

Rumhead makes Robert McNamara look brilliant by comparison.

  121. Jacqueline Grant Says:

Before the election Dr. Dark told us no matter,,,,, we’ll continue as we want.
His endorsement of Rumsfield was a slap in the face of us citzens and the soldiers . They think we’re all stuipd!
Bush isn’t on a listening tour once again he’s seaking out those who has the same opinion he has. To at least look like he has sucess in Iraq he’s finally realized we need to either send more troops or bring them home .
Its totally to late. Years to late.

    Rumsfeld-loo
Another egostistical nutcase that came back to take another whack at destroying his own country was of course Napoleon. Where does one begin with how absurd the notion that Rumsfeld could ever be considered as the Best Defense Secretary “ever” over real American honorees such as Knox and Stimson is disturbing in the face of the disaster he has created for us now. Certainly Knox was not fired by Washington, nor was Stimson fired by Rooselvelt. Why would they be ? Why would you fire the person in charge of military operations at a time when we are in very bad trouble with a war that was declared “accomplished” nearly four years ago ? Well friends, we all know the emporer is not wearing clothes at this point but really, it should be a law that no Defense Secretary will take that office without a significant record of combat experience. Both McNamara and Rumsfeld would have been rejected if that were the case, and hundreds of thousands would have been spared their agony.

But alas, the nut that uttered those absurd words of praise last week was himself a failed defense secretary with no combat experience. You see, Dick has managed to make a life for himself off the misery others, a role played countless times before by men who have not seen first hand the true hell of war up close, for only they are true warriors we need to lead the defense of this still very fine nation we call home.

How could a this all be ? I’m having a nightmare that I’m in a Fox news episode. You too ? OK, wake me up now… please.

How could we they have underestimated the fact that with oil averaging $65 -$70 pb over the past couple of years, that the Middle East is awash in cash, and a good portion of this absurd misbalance fuels this war - the explosives used to blow up our troops on the roads every day. You think it comes from selling honey ? Rugs ? Cut the crap. The best defense strategy we could employ would be to rip the rug right out from under them - orchestrate a massive strategy to bring down the price of oil to say back to $10 dollars a barrell. Take 25% of the “Defense” budget that has been working for us so well (sure) and put it into domestic incentives, conservation, smart and aggressive alternative programs. The we would surely have more support globally. This is something that would have been seriously considered by Stimson and Knox if they were serving us today. Take out their supply lines, right !!!

OK. Now I am dreaming pleasant thoughts of eventual peace. Don’t wake me please…

  123. DallasNE Says:

If Cheney thinks that Rumsfeld was that good why doesn’t Cheney resign to protest the firing of Rumsfeld. That would be the honorable thing to do.

  124. Karim Says:

Someone should just lock up Mr. Cheney in a psych ward.

  125. Grand Ole Party » Gates will have a tough time replacing Rummy Says:

[…] Even the illustrious Dick Cheney believes in Rumsfeld’s greatitude. Thinkprogress.org – a liberal propaganda website - has this great quote from Sir Cheney himself: […]
