O well, Walt, Exocets don't count for much now that Iran can fire a Sunburn or an Onyx at will. You know, the neo-Cons may be agitating for an escalation in Iraq for the simple fact that they can't move it across the border into Iran. They surely don't want to miss out on that next $180 billion emergency spending bill, the one that comes after the one we have to payout now.

My #68,
I must correct myself, three other Exocet missiles were fired at tankers in the Gulf, but, but the USS Stark incident was the sole double barrel attack. It was also the first attack targeting a military ship.

#62 - ScrewBush,
I did absolutely no research on the USS Stark incident. I remembered it. I am definitely not a Republican. I would not support GWB if he were drowning, though I might toss him an anvil.
The thing that gripped me on the Stark incident is that only two Exocets have ever been fired in the Gulf. Both were aimed at the Stark.

Regarding the USS Stark incident, the need to use an example from nearly 20 years ago pretty much screams, "We've got nothing. We're just making stuff up as we go along."

Do you really want to turn back the clock and look at the dealings between the US and Iraq? How about going a little further back and examining the origin of OBL and his band of terrorist. You remember Osama don't you? I know the prez-nit doesn't think much about him these days, but he is the guy responsible for 9/11 -- the day that changed everything, changed America, changed the world, etc. Osama and his band of terrorists were, oh what did the government used to call them, FREEDOM FIGHTERS!

You Republican groupies, you never take responsibility for anything you morons create. You guys must really suck at chess because you can only think of the very next move, and cannot conceive of what could follow that move. Hence the stupid slogans, "Kill 'em all", "deport them all", "throw 'em all in jail", "three strikes", on and on.

From the same article:

<em>It was during these operations that USS Vincennes (CG 49) shot down an Iranian commercial Airbus A300B2-202 airliner [Iran Air Flight 655] on 03 July 1988 after mistaking it for an Iranian F-14. The total of 290 dead civilian passengers, included 66 children. On 22 February 1996 the United States agreed to pay Iran $61.8 million in compensation ($300,000 per wage earning victim, $150,000 per non wage earner) for the 248 Iranians killed in the shootdown.</em>

<em>Does this qualify?

On May 17, 1987 an Iraqi Mirage fighter fired two Exocet missiles at the American ship USS Stark (FFG-31), killing thirty-seven of the crew.

Comment by WaltTheMan </em>

Well then. That changes my whole perspective on the invasion and occupation in 2003. Glad we had 16 years to build up enough troops and plan it out. Thought the way its going, we could have used a few more.

I am sure Cynicon thanks you for doing that research. ;)

Walt:

<em>On 17 May 1987, an Iraqi attack aircraft fired two Exocet missiles, killing 37 sailors and wounding 21 others aboard USS Stark (FFG 31). Iraq apologized, claiming "pilot error."

Ironically, Washington used the Stark incident to <strong>blame Iran for escalating the war </strong>and sent its own ships to the Gulf to escort eleven Kuwaiti tankers that were "reflagged" with the American flag and had American crews. </em>

One question: US is in America, right? Now, what were US troops doing in another continent?

In an elaborate ceremony carried live on all the cable news networks, President Bush and Vice President Cheney feted the disgraced Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with glowing words, military pomp and even a 19 gun salute. "This man knows how to lead and he did," Bush declared, "and the country is better off for it."

Rumsfeld, it seems, will not be held to the <b>GOP's "Les Aspin Standard."</b> That is, decisions that needlessly cost American lives in battle cost defense secretaries their jobs, but apparently only if Bill Clinton is president.

For the details, see:

I just read the article on the neo-cons in Vanity Fair - combined with this article, I can barely express how much these men disgust me!

They blame Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld for not properly conducting their war. They blame the media for encouraging doubt. They blame the American people for not having the cojones to stay in Iraq for 10 or 15 or 20 years.

These are psycopaths masquerading as intellectuals. According to them things are going wrong because of other people - nothing is wrong with their theories. It's all a theoretical exercise to them, the reality of hundreds of thousands of dead, maimed, and displaced human beings means nothing - they will not be held responsible.

It's people like Kristol, Ackerman, Perele, Adleman, Frum and others that keep me believing in an afterlife. Call it what you will, karma, God's justice, somehow these men will pay for their crimes.

<em>Remember, it is better and more noble to be slaughtered at the hands of your enemies than to fight back.
Now then, let’s all hold hands and sing kumbaya, OK?
Comment by Cynicon Implant</em>

There is no amount of troops, weapons and resources, in the world, that can make you feel safe of your own fears. You need professional help to stop seeing terrorists in every face. War companies thank you so much for your cooperation.

For Cyninincompoop, it's either keep fighting in Iraq or "pack it in and sit back and let the terrorists do what they want."

Cyninincompoop, are those two our only options?

The American Enterprise Institute has been wrong about everything regarding Iraq.... so, of course we should take their advice.

So says cyninincompoop.

<em>I think you should change the name of this website to afaidtowin.com</em>

Okay, and while we're at it, let's rename the White House to the "Afraid To Admit They Had No Idea What They Were Doing In The First Place And Sent Hundreds Of Thousands To Their Deaths Needlessly House". Sound good?

A few questions for you: Is there such thing as an impossible task? Yes. Is there such thing as a task that can be accomplished but not under the given circumstances? Yes. What is the task that you think we can accomplish? If you can't give me an answer with any more sophistication or thought to it than just "To win," which is pretty much the highest level of sophistication and thought that your president has given it, you can't be take seriously.

When Bush is asked for a strategy, he answers "To win." When asked what his goal is, he says "To win." When asked what his plans are for achieving his goal, he replies "To win." He's an idiot and he's not capable of dealing with this situation at the intellectual level required of something so grave. You, Cynicon Implant, are a person who idolizes an idiot. Why should anyone listen to you?

#40, I'll try to go slow for you're benefit.

1. Either you want to worship at the feet of Bush, or you want what's best for America. what do you do when those interests are mutually exclusive? Most folks here have chosen to support America.

2. War is not always evil and impossible to justify. But what if after Japan bombed Perl Harbor, FDR invaded Mexico? Do you support your idol Bush, or do you run into the street and protest that your President is insane? Most people here believe their own eyes. We were hit by a bunch of Saudi's, funded by more Saudi's, having a base of operation in Afghanistan, and having absolutely nothing to do with Iraq. We would choose to ** FINISH ** the war in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, The Decider could really care less about the real country, that housed the real folks who attacked us, because he's allowing them to regroup there -- to become stronger, more organized, and to move closer to retaking control of that country. This is beyond sad, it's pathetic.

3. What if you have to choose between strengthend our domestic defenses, hardening domesitc targets, and complete obedience to GOP talking points? Most of us here choose to strengthen America. Run over to the Center for American Progress or the Center for Public Integrity and see how Bush and GOP congress has done nothing since 9/11 to harden our chemical plants, nuclear plants, our borders, the transport of dangerous materials, etc. Hell, look what they've done to FEMA. We still don't have the ability for emergency responders to use a single radio frequence when needed. This is such unacceptable crap.

4. More examples are really not necessary when you're faced with supporting a moron with dreams of being a dictator verses supporting your friends, neighbors, and just the bloody constitution. When you come down on the side of the moron in chief, you've pretty much declared to the world that: YOU HATE AMERICA.

I hope you wake up someday.
