The New York Daily News reported last month that President Bush and “his truest believers” are launching “their final campaign — an eye-popping, half-billion-dollar drive for the Bush presidential library.”
Bush is attempting to raise $500 million to build a library and think tank at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the alma mater of First Lady Laura Bush. “The more [money] you have, the more influence [on history] you can exert,” one adviser said. Much of the money will be used to build a “legacy-polishing” institute:
The legacy-polishing centerpiece is an institute, which several Bush insiders called the Institute for Democracy. Patterned after Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Bush’s institute will hire conservative scholars and “give them money to write papers and books favorable to the President’s policies,” one Bush insider said.
Now, SMU faculty, administrators, and staff are speaking out. In a December 16 letter to R. Gerald Turner, president of the Board of Trustees, members of SMU’s Perkins School of Theology have urged the board to “reconsider and to rescind SMU’s pursuit of the presidential library.”
We count ourselves among those who would regret to see SMU enshrine attitudes and actions widely deemed as ethically egregious: degradation of habeas corpus, outright denial of global warming, flagrant disregard for international treaties, alienation of long-term U.S. allies, environmental predation, shameful disrespect for gay persons and their rights, a pre-emptive war based on false and misleading premises, and a host of other erosions of respect for the global human community and for this good Earth on which our flourishing depends.
The letter concludes, “[T]hese violations are antithetical to the teaching, scholarship, and ethical thinking that best represents Southern Methodist University.”
Anyone else wonder why Dubya didn’t choose Yale as the home? Might be that they didn’t want it either. And I bet they would love to have the sheepskin back that Daddy bought for him there too.
Maybe the University of Phoenix will take it, then it will be the first virtual Presidential Library and no one will have to see it.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:29 pmKeep protesting, but Bush intends to build his half billion dollar library no matter what, so he might send goons to beat up the students, so be prepared!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:30 pmDid they mention 1 million copies of ‘My Pet Goat’?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:32 pmWhat a joke.
In other words, do with the library what they’ve been doing to the American public for six long years; make shit up & hope it sticks.
Let’s hope the good people at SMU make such a fuss about this that
the library ends up at the U of Texas Crawford branch. (That would be
a ‘Junior’ college where the only major involves cow chip tossing), that would be fitting, considering the only major thing Bush has done is throw shit around.
Or to beat up the Staff too or threaten them!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:34 pmNice one #1.
I vote for putting it at the University Of Phoenix.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:35 pmYale? Yeah RIGHT! Maybe he could get Liberty or Bob Jones U, but Yale! Ha!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:35 pmGo SMU!!!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:36 pmFrickin’ SNAP!!
“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
He aint’ fooling SMU, that’s for sure. Heh.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:37 pmThe real scholars know that Bush’s “legacy” isn’t going to be anything to be proud of.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:37 pmWhat’s wrong with Crawford, Texas, Dubious?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:38 pmYou can get straight to work clearing the brush after Christmas. Work off some of that turkey. It’s not like you are busy or anything…….
Realistically,
Bush rides on the “Office of the Presidency” so the office will get respect, and he is the idiot beneficiary.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:39 pmYes, they will beat people up. Right, what other stupid comments are to come? I can’t wait.
ROTFL
December 18th, 2006 at 12:39 pmGDumbya can’t even get a site for his library. What a hoot! Perhaps he needs to be a little more “diplomatic”.
My suggestion would be for him to pick up a nice parcel right smack dab in the middle of Death Valley. It really is the perfect choice if you think about it. There would be no neighbors to complain about it. There’s plenty of sand and heat for the inevitable dioramas of his “greatest” accomplishment — his dirty little war in Iraq. There could be true interactive exhibits right there in the desert with IEDs and all.
If GDumbya is so concerned about his legacy, Death Valley would be the perfect choice alright. Even the name is appropriate.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:41 pmGO MUSTANGS!!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:41 pmHappy Guy,
It isn’t literal, its figurative to illustrate how this administration has used bully tactics and intimidation to get what they want.
Are you unable to think abstractly, why yes you are.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:42 pmBushs LIE-brary is one place in America I truely hope the terrorists target.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:43 pmhow ironic is this, bush, arguably the dimmest person to ever sit in the oval office, is having a library named after him.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:43 pmhow about stocking the library with 1,000,000 copies of “my pet goat”.
actions widely deemed as ethically egregious:
wiretaping US citizens, making jokes about the never found WMD´s, commenting about the kind of democracy Russia should have, destroying the english language each possible opportunity…
December 18th, 2006 at 12:46 pm#10 Raven
You beat me to it. Crawford is exactly where his “Institute” should be.
Crawford, is a make pretend ranch, so he can turn the outhouse into a presidential library, since anything written about his legacy would be crap anyway.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:47 pmWHY DO THEOLOGIANS HATE AMERICA?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:49 pmfinally some real christians
December 18th, 2006 at 12:49 pmThe legacy-polishing centerpiece is an institute, which several Bush insiders called the Institute for Democracy. Patterned after Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Bush’s institute will hire conservative scholars and “give them money to write papers and books favorable to the President’s policies,†one Bush insider said.
Fantastic…500 million for an institute dedicated to polishing turds and smearing lipstick on pigs. A fitting legacy for Bush.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:50 pmGiving money to people willing to write what version of history you want them to write does not make a ‘library’. It makes a literary whorehouse.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:52 pmCoyotee News Flash…
December 18th, 2006 at 12:53 pmDeviant author Michael Chrichton has donated his overwhelming inventory of unsold and unsalable books to the GWB Lie-brary in exchange for a pair of the First Librarian’s (used) underwear…..
Rebel in CA:
December 18th, 2006 at 12:55 pmActually, #3, Zimzone, beat us both… chuckle……
I say they build it in down town Baghdad… and instead of books they fill it with windows… so that all who are interested can simply sit down and view Bush’s true legacy.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:55 pmI mean, what the HELL is the big deal? It ain’t like they’s gonna be THAT many books to take up space. And betcha there will even be a few what ain’t been COLORED in yet, so there’s somethin’ fer the kiddies!
Liberals is SUCH sourpusses!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:57 pmI say they build it in down town Baghdad… and instead of books they fill it with windows… so that all who are interested can simply sit down and view Bush’s true legacy.
Comment by G.W.SuperChrist
Truly inspired…
December 18th, 2006 at 12:57 pmAll the books written for Bush’s library should be conviniently written on easy to use rolls that unwind as needed. They should be soft to the touch to provide maximum comfort to the reader and placed next to a seat designed to eliminate any watse so the reader can spend as much time enjoying the multitude of reading material.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:59 pmLooks like the staff at SMU is up for being the first group of U.S. citizens named “unlawful enemy combatants!”
First off, I’d like to say a heartfelt “thank you” to the staff of SMU for making a courageous stand. Christianity has taken a beating of late and it’s nice to see a mainstream church actually championing Christ’s values.
Next, I’d like to point out that the purpose of Bush’s Library is to re-write history. It would more appropriately be named “The Ministry of Truth.”
Perhaps Haggard’s Church can provide a suitable location?
December 18th, 2006 at 1:00 pmHappy Guy > Karl Rove called to say you are needed today to give Bush a BJ > we know your real identity is Jeff Gannon/James Guckert the hooker!
December 18th, 2006 at 1:01 pmThe Neocons should have a library, so all thier crazy ass shit will be documented, and we can refer to this library to remind us what not to do ever again.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:03 pm#26 – Bingo.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:04 pmThis just in!!
Vern’s Auto Body, Diesel Mechanic, and Meat Cutting College of Amarillo, TX has offered their storefront campus for the library. There is an empty shelf in the unisex toilet for Dubya’s 3 books. This is direct from Vern hisself, President of the school.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:07 pmOh, they still love Bush here in Dallas. He’ll get his library. I went to SMU, and I can tell you it is elitest, white, and intolerant.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:10 pmAs an ex-student at SMU i break down and cry for joy and pride that my alma matter lives up to its high ethical standards . Now if all universities and individuals adhering to these high standards would rise in mass protest against this cynical administration , we can again lift up our heads and be proud of being an American.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:14 pmI am positive there are some buildings in Houston that would love to be mirrored by a new large scale institute dedicated to their own status of privilege and wealth generated by fraud. HQ’s of Halliburton, Enron, Chevron Texaco, Conoco-Phillips are just a few who have generously supported Bushco, and reaped a trillion or so in profit.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:16 pmThere WILL NOT be a Bush library at SMU. My $$$ will stop going to SMU if it does. We’ll never got to another concert. We’ll never step foot on campus again.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:18 pmIf they build the library, they need to be true to the legacy of Bush’s use of the English language.
It will need to be called “The Bush Presidential Lieberry.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:19 pmWherever it’s built….and I’m sure it will at some location….it should be stipulated that it be constructed in the shape of a large hat with the entrance stating….â€all hat and no cattleâ€â€¦..thus upon entering, you’re met with largely…..nada!
Or maybe just a picture of #43 with an asterisk….
December 18th, 2006 at 1:22 pmWhat about the books Rover was reading before the election? Should they be included? And Camus? What about the ISG? What about the constitution? Or the Bill of Rights? How about the comment section from Tom Delay’s blog! (laughed for 5 hours!)
December 18th, 2006 at 1:22 pmIf we start referring to it as his Lie-brary long before its built,it will be an even bigger joke upon completion.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:27 pmThis pretty much sums it up…
http://www.texasmonthly.com/community/blog/paulburka/index.php
“I don’t have much sympathy for the main protagonists here. The folks at the Perkins School should render unto Caesar: in this case, the trustees. The decision to accept or reject a presidential library is not a moral one–and even if it were, it is not theirs to make. And if George W. Bush tries to set up a library that will vindicate his presidency, he won’t be the first president to try. But he would be the first to succeed. History is not that easy to manipulate.”
December 18th, 2006 at 1:29 pmThere’s no library in the world that could hold all of the hot aire and bullshit this administration has produced! Library and Bush just don’t seem to go together. Maybe he could have a little airy outdoor bookreadin’ once in a while when he’s rootin’ around in the brush on his ranch. A little brush cuttin’, a little red man chew and some Camus. Words are hard to come by to describe my level of contempt for these lyin’, cheatin’, stealin’, arrogant egotistical jerkoffs. I would like to see a prosecutor, not on Al “the consigliere” Gonzalez’ staff, put GW and his hole in the wall gang in a lie…abrary in the Federal pen. Maybe a good religious institution like Baylor will take up the cause for Georgie’s library.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:33 pm#40
You attend SMU? Do do you think that you not sending money to SMU will shut down the campus?
December 18th, 2006 at 1:33 pmThe George “not u, but double u” Bush Institute for Democracy and Cheerleading camp. We ain’t smart, but we sure is purty and so darn popular.
Disclaimer: Only open to members. If you are wondering if you are a member then you most definitely isn’t. Donations are not mandatory but are expected. Unless you are wealthy, and then it is free. Be sure and check your intelligence and opinions at the door. We already know what democracy is and we don’t need your thoughts on the matter. Then again, you are either a SMU student or a Texas resident so the intelligence restriction should not be a problem. The opinion restriction, though, will present a problem so we have installed an “Opinion Suggestion Box†which, we know, looks very much like a shredder. However, that is just the way that we break the information down in order to get it through the tubes on the internets. Trust us on this one.
Institute hours: Tue-Thu, 10am to 2pm. Closed Fri-Mon, and holidays. Also closed for the twin’s birthdays (one is Nov 25th but I can never remember when the other one is) and months that end in “erâ€, and “y†and “ustâ€.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:39 pmWhy isn’t the chympidential library at Oral Roberts U???
December 18th, 2006 at 1:50 pmThey’d love to have it to worship.
Funny one Tuber.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:52 pmAren’t most Presidential libraries locate either in that President’s hometown, or at a university they actually attended? For example, Regean’s is in Calif., and Truman’s is in Independence, Mo. (where he retired).
The fact that SMU is even an option just goes to show that, as with damn near everything else, this administration is for sale to the highest bidder or to those who are part of the “family.” Logic and reasoning don’t even factor into it.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:00 pmYeah! Oral R U, or Utah! They shoud bid for it! Why isn’t this a contest? Why do we have to suffer these announcments? They shoud have Enron and Ken Lay fund it!
December 18th, 2006 at 2:04 pmPolish “his legacy” my ass.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:09 pmI am gay, am a Dem. am a Methodist and voted against him 2x. SMU will, in the long run be bettter off with this library. Went to SFSU, don’t you folks get it. Look what the Hoover Inst. has done for Stanford. Don’t you people in Dallas think? Get a grip.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:14 pmwe should have a contest to name the new library.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:18 pmAbout what I expect from those dilletantes in the Ivory Tower. I say put the records in the library, put the library in Dallas, and let scholars spend years researching the lies, venality and corruption of the Bush II Administration. Serves him right, I say.

I applaud the Southern Methodist University Staff. I hear that the Bush staff are also looking at Abu Grab as thier home for Speacial Studies.
December 18th, 2006 at 3:38 pm#1–nice observation.
December 18th, 2006 at 3:43 pmConsidering W’s intellectual depth, he should be looking at preschools, not universities for an appropriate site.
December 18th, 2006 at 3:58 pmhow about:
Lies r Us
December 18th, 2006 at 4:07 pmDammit Kelso (#41), you beat me to the lieberry comment! LOL.
December 18th, 2006 at 4:40 pmMaybe you could host the Bush Library in your mom’s basement.
December 18th, 2006 at 4:43 pm(Dubious is the eyesore these days since retiring down on the farm, he wears that ridiculous stuffed in the front flight suit with the shoulder pads, I can’t even get him out of it long enough to run it through the laundry………. Laura)
December 18th, 2006 at 5:09 pmWOW! There IS intelligent life in Texas…
December 18th, 2006 at 5:24 pm“The more [money] you have, the more influence [on history] you can exert,†one adviser said.
As if there ever was any doubt that he intended to be the author of his own history:
“You never know what your history is going to be like until long after you’re gone.”
December 18th, 2006 at 5:53 pm–George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., May 5, 2006
Tracy, this paragraph from the link you posted is more valuable for the purpose of speaking truth to power.
“Another matter that warrants our attention is that whether it aims to or not SMU will, in the long run, financially profit on the backs of hard-working Americans who feel squashed by policies they’ve now rejected at the polls. Surely it’s not the case that SMU will allow itself to benefit financially from a name and legacy that globally is associated with suffering, death, and political ‘bad faith.’ Taken together, all these issues set decision-making about the Library in a framework of inescapable ethical questions, and remind us of a key imperative adopted by many leading universities around the globe: ‘to be critic and conscience of society.’”
December 18th, 2006 at 6:56 pmRight on! Maybe I’ll become an SMU booster.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:04 pmBest news out of SMU in years. Better yet than no lieberry (thanks, #42 for correcting the spelling) would be no “think tank,” i.e. no place where the knaves who put words into the fool’s mouth can hide while they wait for people to forget what they did.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:38 pmA more appropriate place for W.’ s library is the buried fuhrerbunker in Berlin.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:50 pmThis coming from an originally Methodist school. Now many of the students are just spoiled rich. Glad I went there though. Go SMU!
December 18th, 2006 at 9:32 pmThat’s great. It’ll be the first things the Mexican’s blow up in their shock and awe campaign against Texas.
December 18th, 2006 at 10:24 pmI’ve been planning this for years, a poke in the eye for Animal Farm, I will be famous forever! haha ha
December 18th, 2006 at 10:38 pmHe’s got a whole big ranch out there that is useless (all hat, no cattle) so let him build his little lie museum on it.
December 18th, 2006 at 10:39 pmLIEbrary—very funny.
I think a Bush Presidential Library is a rather dumb idea for a president who doesn’t read books.
A future think tank? A think tank should have existed during his presidency not five years after he leaves office. During this administration, all we got was TANKS and no THINK. What we should have gotten was THINK before TANKS
Bush’s presidential library should be in Texas, but at a junior college. This poor excuse for a president should have a library at the junior college level.
Maybe Pacific Coast University? Isn’t that the university that you pay a couple of grand for a degree. That would be the perfect place. A shady college for a shady president.
John
December 19th, 2006 at 12:42 amThe ultimate effort to put lipstick on a pig, and even that analogy is an insult to self-respecting porkers. As a historian, I’m appalled by this attempt to “spin” history. If these people had any decency they’d raise the half-billion for a fund to be distributed to widows and orphans of both American and Iraqi cannon fodder in this misbegotten war.
December 19th, 2006 at 1:29 am#87,
CNS is a farce. Do you work for them or are you “massaging” Mr. Bozell?
The good news is that they caught that guy in London so you should be safe.
December 19th, 2006 at 2:15 amSouthern Methodist University has redeemed itself as a christian institute by refusing to fall into President Bushs’ errant ways by asking to reconsider and rescind his presidential library. Actually thought every church in this country had fallen for his lies and dictatorship??? Thank you.
December 19th, 2006 at 3:12 amBush was a Yalie. Build it there.
Oh yeah, they don’t WANT it there.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:24 amBush went to Yale.
Build it there.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:27 amBush needs a library–Laura will need something to do with her time, while he’s out doing whatever the hell it is he does once he leaves the White House. Bush during his press conferences looks like the guy giving a book report who never read the book. He needs a depository for his “papers”and “tapes”, e.g. the hanging chads, the warnings of an attack prior to 9/11, His mock search of the oval office for WMDs, signing statements, the Constitution is just a “damned scrap of paper”, mission accomplished speech, I don’t care about bin Laden, You’re doin a heck of a job, Brownie, stay the course and I’ve got political capital to spend and the #1 item–MY Pet Goat.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:37 amPlease stop bashing the President and ORU. George W. Bush was elected President by the majority of U.S. voters twice. OK, once. If you think you can do a better job than Dubya then you can too can run for President and help further turn our country into the United Socialist States of Amerika.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:59 amCan’t believe there are so many people voting for this administration not once, but twice, so how man idiots do we have?
December 19th, 2006 at 10:45 amThese are some of the most hate filled comments I have every heard, most based on ignorance and stupidly. Clinton built a library and I be no one said a darn thing. But I forgot that liberals get confused when it comes to telling the truth.
December 19th, 2006 at 10:47 amWhy not a ‘W’ Library at SMU? It’d be fun. Have the workers misspelled ‘Libary’. Students could steal the ‘r’ and ‘y’ and replace them with an ‘l’. What fun!
December 19th, 2006 at 10:59 amBut seriously, why not just a wing on Daddy’s or Pappa Reagan’s Library? He sure won’t be where he is without them?
Anyway, why worry? Haliburton would get the contract, and it’ll cost three times at much to build. Then the internal plumbing will leak (much like his Administration). If it’s a legacy building, karma will step in, and the place will go up in flames. Then we could park across the street, laughing, watching it burn, all Halloween orange and chimney red.

“Tracy, this paragraph from the link you posted is more valuable for the purpose of speaking truth to power. ”
But certainly not power to truth.
December 19th, 2006 at 1:15 pmThis lieBrary should, and will, be built. And here’s the design so far:
December 19th, 2006 at 1:26 pmIt will be hard to find, like all the WMD in Iraq. Upon entering, you will be stripped naked, piled into human pyramids, and attacked by dogs. Once past this “Grand Entrance”, you’ll be introduced to the “Hall of Signing Statements”, a mostly barren room, decorated with finely shredded reproductions of the U.S. Constitution. From there, take a right (since there’s no “left”) into the 109th Congress Receiving Room, where an automated Rep. Foley will greet the males, and an automated Rep. ‘Duke’ Cunningham will greet the females. Patrons would do well to cover their private areas in this room.
Further to the right are more rooms: the Christian Prayer Museum, the Patriot Act Archive Room, and the 9-11-06 “I Saw The First Plane Hit the Tower from My Limousine” Room (complete with children’s desks and My Pet Goat copies). Further in, and further off to the right, is the Chicken Hawk Observatory, where you can see a panorama of VietNam from a loooooong ways off.
…at least that’s the design so far…
oops – “9-11-01″, but you knew that…

If you are the architect how did you get the permit to build in Iran?
December 19th, 2006 at 1:54 pm[...] Read about it here, here, here, here, here, and here. As I said in my previous post on this topic, the University of Dallas and Baylor University, my employer, are SMU’s chief competitors for the Bush Library. Although there are faculty members at Baylor, including friends of mine, who are Democrats, strongly oppose some of President Bush’s policies, and/or are not enthusiastic champions of the library coming to Baylor, they are not averse to its presence on the Baylor campus. For they correctly see its historical and scholarly importance to the nation and the unique role that Baylor would have in being the academic steward of this project. This is not to say that there are not many faculty members like me who are strong proponents of the library coming to Baylor. Rather, my point is that there seems to be on the Baylor campus none of the visceral hostility that we see emanating from SMU’s faculty toward President Bush. December 20th, 2006 at 1:04 pmHopefully all of these idiots that are bashing President Bush did not go to SMU. They are the embarrassment to SMU. I guess this what you for trying to do what you think is best for the country. I will alway support the President and I am very excited about the library. These are also the same idiots who never go to the football games or other school events to support their school. Why would they want to support something positive for SMU? All of you Bush-Bashers get over it. You are non stop with your hatred. It is amazing how negative and hating you can be. You are all sheep to the left wing media. Look at the news today about the death of President Ford. Instead of having headlines about his achievements, the media is using it as another attempt to stick it to President Bush. Headlines read “Ford disagreed with Bush on Iraq”. Give me a break and stop the hate. This is good for SMU and Dallas.

January 11th, 2007 at 11:02 pmB. I am not an idiot
C. I don’t hate George Bush
D. I deeply dislike his stubborn pursuit of the same failed policies
E. I despair that he now intends to spend more American lives in Iraq
and appears to intend to extend the madness into Iran and/or Syria
F. I am sickened by the methods being used to secure land on which to
build this “library cum think tank”
G. I pray that a merciful God will direct this project to Baylor
Little king George W’s library is more appropriately placed at Levenworth than at an institution of higher learning.

January 22nd, 2007 at 7:23 pmI think it is an excellent idea for SMU to get the BUSH library, don’t you?
Consider the possibilities: Bush goes down, SMU goes down. How bad would that be. Arrogance can’t last forever. Why can’t the people in charge at SMU see what Bush is doing? OR, do they like and support what Bush is doing? Either way would who want to attend an institution of HIGHER learing with people that support a person of BUSH’s moral standard.
Any HIGHER Education organization that would even consider aligning itself with a person of Bush’s lack of integrity, should accept the responsibility that results from that relationship. A bad reputation is a hard thing to reverse. They conducted themselves badly several years ago, and are just now climbing out of the hole. Wouldn’t it be to bad if through another bout with their collective conscience they fell back into the same hole.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:22 pmGood God, I actually had great respect for the people of SMU. Grats, SMU is just another thing Bush used and destroyed.

February 2nd, 2007 at 10:10 amIf SMU allows the Bush Library of Disgrace, it will get what it deserves!
February 10th, 2007 at 8:22 amI live not far from the site and will be avoiding the area permanently as I don’t want to be reminded of the horrors perpetrated by bush and his henchmen; and, of course, don’t want to be blown up!
