Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), the incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has released a statement expressing his serious concern over proposals to increase the U.S. presence in Iraq by up to 50,000 troops:
“The recent speculation in the press regarding an increase of 20,000 to 30,000 or even 50,000 troops in Iraq has left me with many concerns. Everything I’ve heard and everything I know to be true lead me to believe that this increase at best won’t change a thing, and at worst could exacerbate the situation even further. I am also extremely concerned about the additional burden that would be placed on the Army and Marine Corps.
“The Iraqis need to understand that responsibility for the future of that country is theirs. Beginning the redeployment of some number of American forces would send that message. I urge the President to carefully consider this option to help move the political situation in Iraq forward.
Yesterday, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he could support a brief increase in troop levels but only as part of a plan for phased withdrawal. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), a member of the Armed Services Committee, have said they do not favor troop increases.
Read Skelton’s full statement:
Skelton Congratulates Gates and Expresses Reservations on Increased Troop Levels
WASHINGTON, DC – Today Ranking Member Ike Skelton (MO), released the following statement congratulating Secretary Gates and expressing reservation about the proposed increase in troops levels deployed to Iraq.
“I congratulate Secretary Gates on his official assumption of office. I look forward to working with him to meet the needs of our military today and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
“One of those challenges will be Iraq. What we do to solve that situation is one of the most pressing questions facing the new Secretary.
“However, I will withhold judgment until Secretary Gates and General Pace come over and fully explain the rationale behind any decision that is ultimately made. I expect to be shown that any decision on future troop levels is based on a realistic assessment of the situation on the ground and sound strategy, not political assumptions and wishful thinking.
“Whether they come to make the case for an increase, or to maintain the current troop level, or even some other option, they must be able to demonstrate a compelling need for each and every person deployed to Iraq.”
How could the incoming chairman be a republican??
December 18th, 2006 at 5:06 pmI have not heard an answer to my question of the Chicken Hawks. I asked what would the problem be with the USA “losing” the war. Besides the bruised egos, what else is going to get hurt. I ask this regularly, and the trolls never answer. I believe this “winning” shit is all about ego, thats it. So at the expense of more lives and funds we don’t have, we are protecting people’s egos, how sweet.
December 18th, 2006 at 5:07 pmAnswer to #1, Republican/Democrat What’s the difference?
December 18th, 2006 at 5:13 pmBush has broken the empire and bogged it down in Iraq. Our ability to suppress progress in other places is crippled as our military is stretched to the limit. We have lost credibility and leadership globally. They are stuck and they don’t know a way out.

December 18th, 2006 at 5:22 pmWHEN will somone finally call Bush on his B.S.??? I think it fine of Colin Powell to speak up but he is a day late, dollar short. Of course he was in the untenable position as Sec. of State of working for Bush and he did that quite well. If he had been honest during that tenure they would have roasted him at the stake and STILL moved forward with their dumfounded plan. I mean GW even tells his dad (the smarter Bush) to shove it. Divide that mess called Iraq up and get the HELL out!!! Iran with a nuke, OOOOOOOOO I am so fu**ing scared! How about Israel with a couple hundred nukes, the US, Britian and France all with nukes that can be brought to bear on the middle east and Iran in particular. Get over Iran with a nuke, already. Besides, GOD promised to protect Israel, or did you FUNDIES faith go soft?

December 18th, 2006 at 5:33 pmThere is no such thing as ‘brief increase’ as Senator H. Reid describes…when troops go on a mission you cannot limit their time. The issues to be tackled are centered around the mission itself..and that is not the soldiers and generals job,but instead it is the politicians’ job who put the soldiers there in Iraq….This is all happening while the ‘mission’ was described as being ‘accomplished’ back in 2003…that is where Senator Reid should look into and begin to ask questions… it is the political side of this mission, whether we can create our model of our democracy using guns and soldiers,or not..and how successful we will be at it..and how much is going to cost us and what are the side effects of such thinking approach of building nations.

December 18th, 2006 at 5:44 pmI just can’t help but feel that it is Bush’s plan to escalate the war into broader regional conflict that will encompass the entire Middle East. Quite literally, all of his actions are designed to lead to this one conclusion. When he says things are going well, the definition of “well” depends entirely upon your goals. If your goal is a broader Middle East war, then sure, things are going remarkebly well. Plain and simple, Bush wants to see the whole Middle East in flames.

December 18th, 2006 at 6:44 pm“Yesterday, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he could support a brief increase in troop levels but only as part of a plan for phased withdrawal”

I believe you are buying the cover story, Spudge. I believe that Cheney went to SA to tell them in person that they are going to ‘double down’ another terrorist attack on the US, to justify nuclear war with Iran. Call me paranoid — I do plenty.
I do NOT believe that the cruelest of the cruel Saudi princes give a hot goddamn for the Sunnis in Iraq. The only time religion matters in the Middle East is if it helps you kill your enemy. If your co-religionists want a lamb sandwich so they don’t starve, they can just fk off and die.
December 18th, 2006 at 6:58 pm“There is no such thing as ‘brief increase’ as Senator H. Reid describes…when troops go on a mission you cannot limit their time.”

I wish th new Congressional majority stopped pussyfooting around this problem. They act as if they didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Or worse, they are helping Pres Bush avoid the embarrassment to acknowledge Iraq is an absolute disaster. The more the Bush administration feels Democrats are going along, the longer it will take for the troops to be withdrawn from Iraq.
Real people are getting hurt. Real people are dying. Cut the funding for Pres Bush’s illegal war already, and stop the talk about “increase in troop levels” -temporary or not.

However – if insulted, I won’t just take it. I’m not passive. I don’t sugar-coat things. And I don’t have a maternal bone in my body. I don’t make any pretenses about that. Some like that about me, and some don’t. I learned a long time ago that the only way to please everybody was to be someone I don’t like. You’re a good sport :) I just spend too much time with teenage boys… I find just about everything becomes sexual in some manner… So ready for the break…
Concern… yeah, great… but, really, a bit too little a lot too late. Regardless of the faulty intelligence they saw, their job as the opposition party is to question. They didn’t. So I find their “concern” about 33 vertabrae away from a backbone…
As for power, I’ve begun to believe that it is a matter, at their level, of how they act. Power is as power does. So – to a degree – the House Armed Services Chairman has as much power as he exhibits. Let’s hope it’s more than “concern”…

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
Reminds me of that joke about what food kills a woman’s sex drive? Wedding cake… :)
You know it’s not like that, you were married, and I’m sorry if you had to do that.
Not me. I’ve never been married. I’m like the George Clooney of women… See no reason to do it as long as I can date 10-15 years younger and older than I am… Heck, I have students ask me out. If I weren’t old enough to be their mother, I’d be flattered. :)
Lets just say I have no complaints…

I suppose it’s metaphor, but you might want to know that Switzerland has a repressive gov’t and an out-of-control legal system, not to mention banking the money of state-sponsored terrorists from all over the world.
December 19th, 2006 at 12:14 amForTruth. How’s it going? I guess there could be some ego involved, but I also believe there are other important reasons for not losing in Iraq. First, I believe that there are elements of fundamentalist Islam that want jihad with the west (us) whether we want it or not. There have been many terror attacks against the west prior to 9/11 and many since. One benefit of fighting the war in Iraq is that the focus of these fundamentalist Islamic jihadist are on Iraq and not on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, your hometown, etc. Secondly, I understand that what is happening in Iraq is horrific. And, if we could just leave, admit defeat and return to a world free from terrorism, I would agree to it immediately. I just don’t believe that jihadist of the middle east are content to live in a world with compeating ideologies. Although many believe that surrendering Iraq will placate jihadists, I believe they will only be more heartily emboldened. What do you think?
December 19th, 2006 at 1:14 ampaul, I believe if man-unkind addressed the great gulf between the haves and the have-nots, the fuel for the fundamentalist Islam jihadists would blow away like chaff in the wind.

December 19th, 2006 at 2:20 amBriseadh na Faire. First of all I found the Universal Laws and posted them to my favorites but I haven’t read them yet. Thank you. I agree with you that bridging the gulf between the haves and havenots will eleviate the threat. I believe that democracy is the means to accomplish that. I believe that one of Bush’s intentions in Iraq was to spread democracy in the middle east for that very reason.
December 19th, 2006 at 2:40 am“…extremely concerned…”?
Woah, that took a while, didn’t it? Harry, be a good Reid and
go home to Nevada, where the rednecks inbreed. This is what
we call ludicrous. Wait a few more weeks and everybody comes up and does what they want by themselves. Total confusion intentionally prepped by MC Dickjay C and the Loserettes. Selfservice on the budget – now or never – we need a complete NEW ARMY with more people. Unfortunately we have to cut a little bit around to keep ©The Enricheners
richer and take some more from the ones that don’t have a health plan in the first place. Fixing roads? Naaah, we’re gonna move around with Abrams tanks in town soon anyway.
Foreclosures? Pff, who told You to buy that overprized house anyway? And the gasoline? Now don’t be unpatriotic here!
You think six bucks per gallon is too much to support the troops?
The only way to bring the troops home is to donate money into the “Bring’em Home Now” – Fund. The BREHN Foundation will then bring the troops home based on injury or death. First
the dead, then the injured and then the regular fares. The dead fare is cheaper because there is no snack on the planes.
Injured ones don’t need much knee room so more fares will be sold.
A war doesn’t have only downsides. It’s a matter of perceiption. Is the Napalm tank half full, or is it half empty?
Give plenty to the ‘Bring’em Home Now Fund’, before there is nobody left to be brought home.

I urge you to do more research. One person whom I respect said you can find people’s true intention by where they spend their money: i.e. follow the money. Challenge your belief in Bush. Has his actions before or after invading Iraq been consistent with wanting to spread democracy for the reason of eliminating or vastly reducing the gap between the haves and the have-nots? (either here in the U.S.A. where we have democracy, or in Iraq, where we exported democracy at gunpoint?)
December 19th, 2006 at 9:28 amRe#123 Paul
In which speech before Bush invaded Iraq did he tell the Congress or the American people, that he wanted to invade Iraq to bring democracy?
That “reason” was not in his 2003 state of the Union.
That “reason” was not in Colin Powell’s speech at the UN.
If that were the reason would he not be guilty of TREASON because that would violate his oath as president for using our military for a reason other than DEFENSE of the country?
Do you always get IMAGINATION mixed up with REALITY?
As long as we are the making up reasons for going to war after the fact, I believe Bush invaded Iraq to make the streets flow with milk and hunny, so no Iraqi would ever starve again!
December 19th, 2006 at 9:31 amOne of the symptoms of clinical depression is an inability to let go of feelings of resentment. The urge to strike back at an offender, real or imagined, can persist indefinitely. The good news is that it’s treatable.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:39 amI don’t recall ever sending you any email even remotely discussing sexual compatability, so I just searched my “sent” file, just to make sure. I didn’t. We talked about spirituality v. athiesm.
My last email to you, dated May 21, 2006, answered your question “How’d you get Yahoo to do the italic?” and why I studied the Sermon on the Mount and the Tao Te Ching in my youth. I also discussed a view on particle/wave theory and replied to your question, “So, where do you think is the source for your [shamanistic] experiences – someone or something god like… or something less conscious?”
Now, if you wish to take something out of context and twist that into somehow implying that I desired you, well, there is a term for something like that. It’s called slander.
If the only way you can respond, well, I feel sorry for you.
You over-react. If someone gives you a gentle nudge, you respond with a baseball bat.
Trueblue is a friend of mine. You attacked her unreasonably. I would have stood up for you, had you been attacked unreasonably. (In fact, I think I did, back in May, when someone made disparaging remarks about your mother.)
I know you’re not scared of me. And I do not intend to frighten you. But have you ever looked beyond the reflection in the mirror? Do you dare to do so? For that is what terrifies you the most.
I tried to show you a path to Enlightenment. You choose to stick with Athiesm, as is your right. But Nature has a way of seeking balance. You lash out at those who would have been your friends. And you sound more and more like a lonely, bitter old woman. If that is not how you wish to be seen, you might want to rethink your replies.

Then you are trusting the wrong C-in-C to bring those results.
This one failed to guard any of the 400 metric tons of high-explosives in Iraq. FAILED TO WRITE A SINGLE ORDER TO GUARD THE MUNITIONS WE KNEW WERE THERE.
Then he published Hussein’s nuclear bomb plans on the Internet — in ARABIC.
Oh, and he let Bin Laden escape, by underdeploying troops to Afghanistan because he was saving them for his Iraq adventure.
So, yeah, you trust the wrong person.

December 19th, 2006 at 4:24 pmI don’t recall ever sending you any email even remotely discussing sexual compatability, so I just searched my “sent†file, just to make sure. I didn’t. We talked about spirituality v. athiesm.
You did. It’s why I stopped responding to your messages after that. It offended me.
I had posted in a thread about sexual compatability and you then sent me the thread with a comment that said “as the saying says… Let’s find out.†No other way to interpret that.
But the fact that you went to check your emails shows that you thought it was possible. Why is that?
My last email to you, dated May 21, 2006, answered your question “How’d you get Yahoo to do the italic?†and why I studied the Sermon on the Mount and the Tao Te Ching in my youth.
No, your last email to me was about 9/11 and it was in October. There were several in bewteen May and October that I did not respond to, because your comment about sexual compatability made me uncomfortable.
Now, if you wish to take something out of context and twist that into somehow implying that I desired you, well, there is a term for something like that. It’s called slander.
Only if it isn’t true. And it’s true. You can pretend it isn’t… but one thing I am not is a liar.

December 19th, 2006 at 4:25 pmI tried to show you a path to Enlightenment. You choose to stick with Athiesm, as is your right.
Ah ha! There it is – right there! I never realized that this was about that. About you being angry that you couldn’t convert me to your way of thinking. I assume from this, that you think that your only way is the only right way. So typical of all the religions I reject. You all pretend to want to engage me, but in the long run, it is about validating your own views by getting someone else to confirm them. And then when I don’t – you must turn me into someone who is “evilâ€.
“I am treated as evil by those who feel persecuted because they are not allowed to force me to believe as they do.â€
–unknown
This explains trueblue – as she admitted her anger was with my Atheism. katy as well. But I had no idea that you shared their path on this.
Well, I’m glad to know. It’s the missing puzzle piece that explains sooooo much now.
And I thought you were beyond that sort of resentment.
But Nature has a way of seeking balance. You lash out at those who would have been your friends.
You assume I wanted or want to be friends with you or those people. I did not and do not. I have a lot of friends in my real life, and am very selective about whom I add.
I’ve lashed out at no one. I simply have refused to be manipulated. Call it what you will, but it doesn’t make it so.
And you sound more and more like a lonely, bitter old woman. If that is not how you wish to be seen, you might want to rethink your replies.

Only because that is how YOU are chosing to read my posts. You assign the tome and character. And you’ve done it slanderously yourself, because I actually just speak in a normal voice without malice. Seems your choice to do so only implies that you yourself are bitter about my religious choices.
I have nothing to rethink. Just because a couple of people in a written blog who have never met me want to vilify me because I won’t be submissive to their demands, I’m supposed to put your ridiculous request over the reality that your minority view is not valid in my view of myself? Ha. Good one. There will always be people who don’t like me. The fact that they are people like you does not impact me. Get over yourself. I already have.

And I checked my emails to find out how the heck you could find any one of them even remotely suggesting that which you accuse me of. Your quote above, “as the saying says… Let’s find out.†didn’t come from any email of mine.
Several months ago you asked me about Shamanism. For whatever reasons, you discontinued the discourse. Too bad. A shaman works with forces you don’t believe in, both light and dark. Your anger, hatred and bitterness are visible to me. The 105 Universal Laws apply to Athiests as well as Spiritualists. Too bad you won’t read them and understand.

December 19th, 2006 at 5:32 pmoops, would a shaman say “Amen”?
It was simply an ‘I agree’ statement.
Funny how things like that creep into vernacular….
I will only post an advice I would use for me if I were one of the arguing people here:
Will my words help me and others in the thread to become better human beings and a society or they are just an expression of my bruised ego?
December 19th, 2006 at 5:33 pmI stand corrected, Unbelievable. I did send you one email, on September 27, asking for your opinion regarding http://www.v911t.org/911PlaneSite.php. Either you didn’t view the video or you choose to believe in the Administration’s lies in spite of the laws of physics to the contrary.
Yes. I do not lie. You did send me that one last. I chose to ignore it as I did the several since May when you sent the one about sexual compatability. Because if you could cross that line, I saw no point to continue the discussion.
As for 9/11, you never mentioned how many years of Physics you’ve studied… How many is it? I’ve had 9 courses in physics and building related Physics from an engineering university. And then I practiced it for 14 years. When you get caught up, lemme know. Until then, I see no point in discussing this subject with someone uneducated on such matters.
And I checked my emails to find out how the heck you could find any one of them even remotely suggesting that which you accuse me of. Your quote above, “as the saying says… Let’s find out.†didn’t come from any email of mine.
Yes it did. You also said that if you making comments like that bothered me to let you know. You can pretend you didn’t send it, but either you are lying or you deleted it and forgot.
Several months ago you asked me about Shamanism.
No. I asked you about ‘pygmalion principal’ in here and you asked me to email you about it. Afterward – YOU started with the religious stuff. I didn’t ask.
For whatever reasons, you discontinued the discourse.
I told you why. You turned it sexual. You are married. I wasn’t going to give you any idea that I was even remotely open to you going there.
Too bad. A shaman works with forces you don’t believe in, both light and dark.
Apparently you are so good at it you’re controlling this discourse…
Your anger, hatred and bitterness are visible to me.
Then you are blind. People who actually know me would laugh at you. A lot. That’s ridiculous. And just because you appointed yourself as an authority over irrational nonsense doesn’t mean you are qualified to judge anyone else.
The 105 Universal Laws apply to Athiests as well as Spiritualists. Too bad you won’t read them and understand.
Your sanctimony is beyond obnoxious. The only thing that applies to me is reality.
Just because you ‘believe’, it doesn’t give you the right to condemn those who don’t. Which is hypocritical as you’ve claimed to be open minded. In fact, just last week you said exactly the opposite of what you are saying now.
I have a wonderful life. So, for you to claim otherwise shows your don’t have the first clue of what you are talking about.
Your claims about me are as your name implies, Unbelievable.

It’s all about you. You have to compare yourself to everyone else and then condemn them when they don’t measure up to your standards. It’s why I had started to ignore you initially. And then, you freaked out.
When I am wrong, I have admitted it. In this case, the only mistake I ever made was trying to reason with you. Otherwise, I’m just doing what I said I would do – not tolerate being insulted.
Just drop the whole thing, please? Oh, is that too angry for you?
See, here’s the thing. You want me to do what you want. That’s so freaking self-centered.

amen to that!!! (care to put the hypothesis to a test? —just kidding…)
Perhaps it is Unbelievable who is envious of my spirituality. She has derided the thought of breathing a cloud away, yet I’ve taught others to do so as well.
Perhaps she was offended because I was just kidding. After all, I have mentioned on these boards that I wear a kilt. And you know what they say about a woman scorned. I mean, to take what I wrote and somehow twist that into insinuating that I, a married man, was interested in having an adulterous affair with someone who lives a couple of thousand miles away takes either dimentia, a great imagination, or wishful thinking.
And Trueblue, as you can see, a shaman would say “Amen.”
There’s another word, a greeting, I say to you:
Namaste.
December 19th, 2006 at 7:53 pmIt must have been the kilt, I know it gets me everytime. :)
December 19th, 2006 at 8:17 pmNot so fast;I have one thing I’d like to add to this discussion.
Atleast twice in the last 50 posts, unbelievable said that she ‘doesn’t lie’.
Yet she told me,thus everyone else on this blog, last spring, that her Mother was dead. This turned out NOT to be TRUE.
Now answer your own question: What kind of person would say that about their own Mother just for the sake of winning an argument?
Now you all are beginning to see why I’ve had such acrimony with her in the past.
Just for the record,BnF, I never, ever, insulted her Mother, that’s if you were referring to something I might have said.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:22 amShe told me her Mom was dead after I said she probably lives at home with her Mom.
All this can be found in the archives.
This is who you are dealing with, and she has no respect.
Si Byl, if memory serves correctly, it was Walt the Man who made the disparaging remarks.
I have found, be it Unbelievable or anyone else, we usually find fault in others those faults that lie within ourselves. Unbelievable accuses others of being passive/agressive, yet her posts are just that. And when someone repeats the mantra “I do not lie” I wonder whom s/he is trying to convince. And, as you saw above, she attributed a direct quote to me something which I did not say.
Her thinking I was trying to “convert” her to shamanism was so far off the mark as to be pathetically laughable. Walking the path of a shaman is a calling, and a gift. One does not convert to shamanism. One is, or one is not, a shaman.
Perhaps she was upset she could not convert me to the rational belief system of Athiesm. I will readily admit shamanism does not deal with that which can be perceived by the five senses. But that does not make shamanism irrational, only non-rational.
Even the rational system of Athiesm makes certain assumptions, mainly, that that which can be perceived by the five senses (enhanced by technology) is the limits of the Universe. Shamanism rejects that premise.
But I digress. Your point is well taken, Si Byl.
Peace and Blessings.
December 20th, 2006 at 10:34 amBriseadh na Faire: Namaste, and thank you.
December 20th, 2006 at 11:05 amEscalation? Possibly. With a new president we might gain enough good-will in the world to create a force of over one million soldiers to PACIFY the ‘insugency’, disarm the entire nation, and secure the borders so that jihadi’s would not be able to ship weapons or enter for their martyrdom. Then, the people could elect another government, build an army and law enforcement structure, and we could reduce the entire occupation army to border patrol duties. Naive? I haven’t heard any better ideas. Compartmentalization would only set the stage for future civil wars unless we did the pacification and border control anyway. I guess we could just leave and send an apology. Any other viable options?
December 20th, 2006 at 7:49 pmJust for the record;
I had absolutely nothing to do with the multiple postings that took place all day,on multiple threads.
December 21st, 2006 at 3:59 amPerhaps she was upset she could not convert me to the rational belief system of Athiesm. I will readily admit shamanism does not deal with that which can be perceived by the five senses. But that does not make shamanism irrational, only non-rational.
