Australia, the only major industrialized country other than the U.S. to reject the Kyoto Protocol, is facing its worst drought in 1000 years. As ClimateProgress notes, global warming “has also taken its toll on the economy, significantly slowing Australia’s growth since so much of the country’s GDP relies on agriculture.”
Why is the dirt lying? Why does it have a liberal agenda? It’s in a conspiracy with the hotter sun isn’t it?
(sarcasm)
December 19th, 2006 at 4:28 pmIs it me, or do conservative policies seem to cause harm to an economy over the long term?

December 19th, 2006 at 4:33 pmCredit to some American states well done –
Overshadowed by the national midterm election results was news of actions in two states that have created new opportunities for moving toward energy independence while advancing a smart and affordable solution in the fight against global warming.
In Washington, voters turned out in strong numbers to adopt a renewable electricity standard, a requirement that electric utilities gradually increase their use of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. Under the initiative, the state’s largest utilities are required to furnish 15 percent of their electric power from renewable sources by 2020. In addition, the initiative requires Washington utilities to pursue low-cost energy conservation opportunities with their customers. Washington is the 21st state, plus the District of Columbia, to adopt a renewable standard. It’s the ninth state to do so in just the last two years, and the second via a ballot initiative.
One week prior to the election, power regulators in Arizona opted to boost that state’s existing renewable standard to 15 percent by 2025, up from the more modest previous requirement of 1.1 percent by 2007. Arizona is the ninth state to increase or accelerate its existing renewable standard since 2004, demonstrating the effectiveness and popularity of the policy.
Praise dont come round often with me – But pat on the back – Its a good policy keep it up democrats and please impaech Bush
December 19th, 2006 at 4:33 pmThese examples of state leadership are creating a growing momentum for action on renewable energy in Congress. At least four new Democratic Senate members and more than 15 of the new members in the House have indicated their support for measures that would encourage the use of more renewable energy. The new chairman of the Senate Energy Committee, Senator Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., has championed a federal standard that has passed the Senate three times. He has vowed to bring the measure before that body early in the new legislative session. On the House side, Speaker-elect Pelosi, D-Calif., has indicated that she will move within the first 100 days of the new Congress to eliminate some tax breaks for big oil companies and apply that money to programs to encourage the development of renewable energy. With these indicators, new incentives for renewable energy are seen as having the best chance of passage in over a dozen years.
Big kisses on the bottom

Isn’t poop man made? He might qualify for that – at best : )
December 19th, 2006 at 4:50 pmMaybe they are terraforming the continent so that they can build a large solar panel array and supply the rest of the world with their energy. It would rival that produced by oil thus eliminating the reliance on the ME for energy……….nah.

December 19th, 2006 at 5:04 pmI have started my own study group that will look into this Kevin phenomenon. So far we have created a paper titled “The Lies About the Kevin Among Us”. It shows in a factual manner, that although we may see the effects that seem to come from a Kevin they are actually just natural occurences that can randomly happen in the blogosphere. The blogosphere is an ever changing complex entity and to say that some things are typed because a Kevin is out there is just fear baiting.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:05 pm9/ Maybe they are terraforming the continent so that they can build a large solar panel array and supply the rest of the world
I read somewhere that 125 square miles of solar panels could supply all the worlds energy needs If it were built in the likes of the Sahara desert
December 19th, 2006 at 5:06 pmTobey,
December 19th, 2006 at 5:11 pmI read something along that line also. I can’t remember the needed amount though. But to say that it can’t be done in this day and age is just defeatism and lacks the foresight needed.
Well well the so called wise idiot Bush said no Global Warming but I guess God had other plans. Even when it’s in Bush’s face he still denies why because of the money from Big Business. As long the GOP has their pockets lined with money to keep destroying the earth Bush will tell Tony Snowjob to use his magic powers of lying and tell the American people they haven’t seen what their looking at. It worked in 2000 and 2004 maybe it will continue to work. Chicken little the sky is falling.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:15 pmTobey – If they built it, Bush would bomb it.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:24 pmYep hot here today.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:37 pmPity that the storyline failed to mention that a far more significant part of our economy is coal mining and Australia is digging it up as fast as we can, just hving problems with our ports so we can ship it faster.
Global warming, Australia policy seems to be similar to GWB. Bring it on. But then again nearly all Australia’s policys are the same. Australia could join the union with very little adjustment but it would be a red state at present.
It also fails to mention that most of our major cities are runnuning out of water. So it is not just a rural problem.
You say that as if the Kyoto Treaty and the current drought are causally connected AND as if their adoption of the treaty would have prevented the drought. I’m all for completely eliminating CO2 emissions from humans, but the Kyoto Protocol is half assed and wouldn’t reduce jack.
December 19th, 2006 at 6:09 pmWith Austrailia suffering much like we did last year with hurricanes and both countries in global warming denial I am reminded of something: A woman in a white robe and furious face saying quite sternly: “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.”

Not so fast;I have one thing I’d like to add to this discussion.
Atleast twice in the last 50 posts, unbelievable said that she ‘doesn’t lie’.
Yet she told me,thus everyone else on this blog, last spring, that her Mother was dead. This turned out NOT to be TRUE.
Now answer your own question: What kind of person would say that about their own Mother just for the sake of winning an argument?
Now you all are beginning to see why I’ve had such acrimony with her in the past.
Just for the record,BnF, I never, ever, insulted her Mother, that’s if you were referring to something I might have said.
She told me her Mom was dead after I said she probably lives at home with her Mom.
All this can be found in the archives.
This is who you are dealing with, and she has no respect.

Trueblue,
Of course, Unbelievable is offended by any remark about sexuality:
Men’s peak is 17, and women’s is 40. I’m guessing I’m closer to 40 than you are to 17? :)

I think it’s a plot by women in their 40’s so they can get 17 year old men :)

amen to that!!! (care to put the hypothesis to a test? —just kidding…)
Perhaps it is Unbelievable who is envious of my spirituality. She has derided the thought of breathing a cloud away, yet I’ve taught others to do so as well.
Perhaps she was offended because I was just kidding. After all, I have mentioned on these boards that I wear a kilt. And you know what they say about a woman scorned. I mean, to take what I wrote and somehow twist that into insinuating that I, a married man, was interested in having an adulterous affair with someone who lives a couple of thousand miles away takes either dimentia, a great imagination, or wishful thinking.
And Trueblue, as you can see, a shaman would say “Amen.â€
There’s another word, a greeting, I say to you:
Namaste.

December 20th, 2006 at 4:08 amTobey – thanks for post with the link on renewable energy. Here in Pennsylvania, the legislature is pushing for more renewable energy and the State has a campaign supporting the purchasing of “local Pennsylvania produce” which comes from smaller sustainable farms. These farms use less oil products because they strive for using organic methods of farming. Guess we must take it one step at a time and be grateful for small successes.
