Congresswoman Caught In Lie Over Castro Assassination Claim
Clips from a new documentary posted online recently show Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) saying, “I welcome the opportunity of having anyone assassinate Fidel Castro and any leader who is oppressing the people.”
Ros-Lehtinen quickly disavowed the comments and gave a long, tortured explanation about how the video was doctored:
Ros-Lehtinen, who has never hid her loathing for Castro, says the clip was spliced together.
Watch the video closely, she says. She says her lips aren’t saying what the audio says she is. At one point in the clip, a sharp-eyed viewer can see what appears to be a skip in the filming.
“It’s twisted in a way that gives the viewer a totally wrong impression,” Ros-Lehtinen said Friday. “I’ve said the community has moved on, that those strategies are not being used today, but apparently the filmmakers think we’re still in a `60s mentality.”
Director Dollan Cannell has now released the unedited version of the Ros-Lehtinen interview, confirming that nothing was doctored. Watch it:
In response to a question about whether there is an “argument for assassination” of Fidel Castro, Lehtinen clearly states, “I welcome the opportunity of having anyone assassinate Fidel Castro and any leader who was oppressing … oppressing the people, and if they don’t assassinate and if they bring him to trial, I welcome the opportunity to having him meet the … a jury of his peers and answer.” (Full transcript here.)
Cannell has called Ros-Lehtinen’s accusations “completely, totally false” and called on her “to retract what she said and to apologize.” Ros-Lehtinen had “no comment” on the new footage.

But this is not to say that the woman is a total liar.
The whole “Look, my lips aren’t moving to say those words” is absolutely ridiculous. It would take world class SFX technology and the worlds best SFX artists to create a video where here lips move so authentically that it looks absolutely real.
And if she didn’t say what we hear, than who’s voice ARE we hearing? Are we supposed to believe someone spend hours splicing together words and syllables from other words she spoke to come up with that? Are we to believe they spent hours trying to alter audio of another person saying those lines so they audio sounds more like her voice?
That would take a HELL OF A LOT OF WORK, and documentary crews don’t have the time and money for something like that.
The reason the footage looks like she is saying what she’s saying is because she IS.

If I’m not mistaken, that could be interpreted to call for assassinating President Bush and Vice President Cheney. After all, the “terrorists” see them as oppressing the people. And, under the Military Commissions Act of 2006, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen could now conceivably be considered an enemy combatant.

Actually, the MSM isn’t covering this at all that I’ve seen, including the NYT. For sure, it’s not being covered here in Florida AT ALL in any of the local papers on the SW Coast. Don’t know about Miami, but would certainly doubt it…since she considers her constitutency to be those who fled Cuba (or descended from them). I too am facing a new beginning this year, as I transition out of a teaching career and into the legal profession. Although I have coursework in employment and labor law, I am leaning towards a position dealing in international business relations…one where I can do a fair amount of traveling. I can focus on employment law issues for my pro-bono work.
