Today, President Bush held a news conference where he discussed the “way forward” for the economy in 2007. Renowned Morgan Stanley economist Steven Roach says the the “odds of the U.S. economy tipping into recession are about 40 to 45 per cent.” New York Times columnist Paul Krugman notes that “the odds are very good — maybe 2 to 1,” that the U.S. will teeter toward a recession in 2007. Bush’s solution? “Go shopping more.” Watch it:
Similarly, after the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush simply asked Americans for their “continued participation and confidence in the American economy.” From the Internationald Herald Tribune, 1/14/03:
Bush did nothing to mobilize public opinion to accept the sacrifices that war implies — the first thing a leader would do. Tax cuts could go ahead as planned, and energy saving was dismissed out of hand. “Go shopping” was the administration’s message.
Bush added today that 2007 will “require difficult choices and additional sacrifices” from the American people.
Transcript:
As we work with Congress in the coming year to chart a new course in Iraq and strengthen our military to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we must also work together to achieve important goals for the American people here at home. This work begins with keeping our economy growing. … And I encourage you all to go shopping more.
Freakin’ moron, that was the same advice you gave after 9-11.
What an AMAZING grasp of economics this man has!!!!
Stop listening to Laura. I’m sure shopping cures all her woes too, dope.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:01 pmWell, I guess I could buy another pair of shoes…
What an a$$wipe.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:04 pmThis friggin’ dumb shit just continues to spit in the face of the AMerican people. Your time will come Bush. You just wait. Karma will hit you like a ton of bricks.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:04 pmAnd I encourage you all to go shopping more.
Because consumer debt isn’t high enough.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:05 pmSounds like the same advice the “War President” gave after 9/11.
In essence, when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:06 pmAnd while you are shopping, try to not think about the war in Iraq.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:06 pmTerrorist Bush would much prefer that you keep on shopping and ignore his failed fascist aggressions in Iraq and Afghanistan…
Terrorist Bush would much prefer that you keep on shopping and ignore the GOP-stolen election in 2000.
Terrorist Bush would much prefer that you keep on shopping and ignore his treason on nine-eleven.
Terrorist Bush would much prefer that you keep on shopping and ignore the planned destruction of New Orleans by the Bush flood which followed Hurricane Katrina right on cue.
Terrorist Bush would much prefer that you keep on shopping and ignore his attempted destruction of our Bill of Rights and our Constitution.
Happy Holy-days.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:06 pmThis is the same thing Bush I said during his recession, which finally proved to everyone that he was totally out of touch with reality.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:06 pmLittle birdie, give it a rest!
December 20th, 2006 at 1:07 pmBush is clueless about everything including the economy! His policies are leading the nation to the brink of economic collapse and depression! But America under Bush regime will not have soup kitchens, just starvation for those who lose their jobs!
December 20th, 2006 at 1:07 pmYes, we must increase consumer debt so that our CEO masters can get their multi-million dollar year-end bonuses and stock prices can continue to rise. Sounds like a great plan Dubya!
December 20th, 2006 at 1:09 pmThen again, when you’re raised by a nanny and never receive punishment from your parents, you tend to turn out like our bumbling Commander in (gulp) Chief, with no regard for reality.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:09 pmDamn I hate referring to a CHICKENHAWK in military terms. It’s really a slap in the face to all enlisted service people. Shame.
At least he didn’t suggest we eat cake.
Yet.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:11 pmBush: Peoples should go buy more and if you don’t have the money put it on a credit card. Thats how I run my government. Credit lines to the moon. hehehe. Its not really debt anyway. You are just making future investments today with the money you will be making. hehehe
December 20th, 2006 at 1:11 pmSpoken like a true Corporate Puppet.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:20 pmMakes me proud that I posted the following yesterday:
“…
Slow down the pace of consumption.
Buy less. Save more. I know that’s not real feasible for many on month to month, paycheck to paycheck home budgets.
But for many of us, consumerism is an addiction we can beat.
Don’t buy anything with a credit card unless you can pay off the card each month. This takes discipline, but once your card is cleared, it’s a great feeling, knowing the big lenders aren’t making a damn dime off you.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:21 pmMake sure you actually need something before buying it.
What a concept.”
Rather than telling people to spend money, why doesn’t the government cut back on spending and start paying off the debt to strenghthen the economy? how about corporations start investing in better ways to make products that are sustainable and cheaper, rather than giving a huge bonus to their CEO. If wealth were shared maybe Americans would actually have the money to spend.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:22 pmBy the way, in the minds of the people, the government is supposed to solve our problems. When a president starts scolding them for something, whether right or wrong, his poll numbers plummet. In this case the economy is not the fault of the people, so that means extra anger towards Bush for the scolding. How low will his polls go for this gaffe?
The words of a mad man. Bush said we are winning in Iraq as all see we’re losing. Bush said stay the course as other say change. Bush said Rummy would stay in his Administration to the end then fires him the next day. Only 28% of the public believe the liar-in-chief. Even the troops think he’s a nut case. Tony Snowjob is the new Obi-Wan-Kenobi as he tells you liars and you believe.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:22 pmSpending more for the economy is like f*cking for virginity. It can be a lot of fun but will never accomplish the end objective. (Like most of Dubya’s other ‘best-laid’ plans.)
December 20th, 2006 at 1:23 pmDubya Dunce Decider Despot’s motto for the US: What me worry be slap happy > Instead of eat cake he means go buy some cake > I feel sick!
December 20th, 2006 at 1:24 pmThis, alone, would deserve the burning of his ranch.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:26 pmOk, so Bush has bankrupted the country by giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy class (and $100/yer to the rest of us) at the same time approving record deficit spending AND financing TWO WARS with off-budget borrowing.
Now he wants the rest of us to follow his lead and privately rack up so much debt that our kids will have to pay for our spending after we’re gone.
Meanwhile, the uber-rich get richer, with record-setting bonuses on Wall Street, and record profits amongst the War Profiteers.
Question (off topic): The Estate Tax was created to prevent a dynastic class from rising up and taking power in America. Why do we need to repeal it?
December 20th, 2006 at 1:27 pmComment by little birdie
Please stop.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:36 pmStacey Owens,
What is your definition and thoughts about what a society is? From your points above it sounds like everyone should be for themselves which souonds like a total breakdown of society and anarchy. Are you an anarchist? Why do you hate America and the society where we all try to improve eachother for the benefit of our coountry? Why do you think it is better to improve individuals in this country and not our society?
December 20th, 2006 at 1:36 pmAnd I encourage you all to go shopping more.
This man makes me dizzy…

Title: Wide Awake
You can a look a hurricane right in the eye
1200 people dead or left to die
Follow the leaders, we’re in an eye for an eye we’ll all be blind
Death for murder and this I’m sure in this uncertain time
So come pull the sheet over my eyes
So I can sleep tonight
Despite what I’ve seen today
I find you guilty of a crime, of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake
Down on the road the world is floating by
The poor and undefended left behind
While you’re somewhere trading lives for oil
As if the whole world were blind, hey
So come pull the sheet over my eyes
So I can sleep tonight
Despite what I’ve seen today
I find you guilty of a crime of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake
Come pull the sheet over my eyes
December 20th, 2006 at 1:40 pmSo I can sleep tonight
Despite what I’ve seen today
I find you guilty of a crime of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake
Wide awake! Wide awake! Wide awake! Wide awake!
#24 stacy,
Please list specifically what you have done for your country.
And then, please list specifically your sacrifices.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:41 pmShop? With what? I haven’t had money to shop with since the NASDAQ crash. What a maroon. Bush is POISON to the US economy!
December 20th, 2006 at 1:41 pmwhere was this idiot in November? We, the American people voted for change! where is it? he obviously wasn’t listening. It is time for his blind, deaf, dumb ass to wake up.
and as to some (like above) who think liberals support a welfare for all state and think they’re entitled to handouts, etc – that is so not true its not even funny. I like many liberals work hard for a living, but I at the same time use my mind in my job and my life; I make logical decisions. I think for myself! I will not support sending my family, friends into danger for a war that is being fought on a false pretext. how does that translate into entitlement? it doesn’t; it just says we’re not puppet morons who will go out and shop and leave the leading of our country to others who are in positions of leadership. why? because not all of us elected this schmuck into the leadership position that he is currently in, and it is our patriotic and personal duty to speak out for what we believe he is doing wrong. otherwise, we’ll just be along for the ride to hell in a handbasket that he’s currently taking our country down.
Come on 2008, and good riddance to the Bush family.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:42 pmIt is the self serving, egotistical wealthy republicans who think they are entitled to hand outs.
Do you even know anything about the party you so love that you would sell out your country for? Have you read the Declaration of Independence, Constitution or Bill of Rights? Do you have a clue?
Just keep on ruining this country bitch.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:43 pm“This is not a welfare for all state sponsored soup kitchen.”
No, but it is a welfare state for Corporations with the subsidies they receive as opposed to soup for the needy and you are okay with that. Or did you just not know?
It is hypocritical for anyone to lambast a government helping the people, but ignoring the tax money that goes to Corporations like Big Oil who are already raking in windfall profits.
You were aware that the American Government is one “of, for, and by the people” I’m sure.
I can somewhat see your potential point about not wanting to breed a culture of people soley dependent on the Government, but you ignore that there are people (in the form of Corporations) taking that money out of pure greed and not necessity.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:44 pmtwo things Stacy,
1.) most republicans are disavowing George at a head spinning rate,
and
2.) Your response has nothing to do with this thread. were talking about the ECONOMY. Perhaps look up the definition when you can.
ON TOPIC
December 20th, 2006 at 1:49 pmI don’t see how running up consumer debt will somehow magically erase all of the debt we have incurred over the last 6 years. I realize, that some of that debt was there under Clinton, but he was also working on paying off the debt as opposed to running it up.
I’d really like to see the 88% of us that don’t want the war ESCALATED to take action and reduce our purchases to absolute essentials only. Food, Shelter and as little clothing as we must buy to stay warm.
Nothing else. Period. (Except Zooey’s tuition.)
That really is the only weapon we have if the Congress won’t start the impeachment process. Let’s consider using it.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:55 pmWTF does what Bush said have anything to do with soup kitchens, other than the fact that, thanks to the huge disparity of wealth Bush has created, there is a bigger need for them?
I for one am NOT going shopping because I’m barely able to put a roof over my head and feed my kids and if it weren’t for my parents my kids wouldn’t have a decent Christmas and ironically I work for the GOVERNMENT. So F–K You, George Bush and your “go shopping” bullcrap. Thanks for nothing.
December 20th, 2006 at 1:58 pmDollar dropped in Iran asset move ( BBC REPORT this time )
Iran is to shift its foreign currency reserves from dollars to euros and use the euro for oil deals in response to US-led pressure on its economy.
In a widely expected move, Tehran said it would use the euro for all future commercial transactions overseas.
I think its more than Recession coming …. ha haha ha
December 20th, 2006 at 2:09 pmI’m surprised Dubious didn’t come right out and say: “Go shopping more, at Wal-Mart“
December 20th, 2006 at 2:15 pmIs this the same Steven Roach who said in 2002 that he is pessimistic about the future of the American economy? Uh, then we had one of the longest periods of economic expansion in US history with GDP over 3% quarter after quarter after quarter. And Krugman? I don’t think the guy knows the date that the 4th of July falls on.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:20 pmI predicted this way back in October. One of the best economies in the history of this planet under circumstanced or extreme economic stress it was like Bush had some sort of magic going on. Those in that really understand economics know that Bush received a recession economy and with his tax cuts turned it around. Increased tax revenue in doing so. Never mind that there were extra expenses that country was pounded with disaster after more disaster still in the end before the last midterm election we has a 4.5 percent unemployment rate. And the deficit shrinking.
The left propaganda machines have to pump out some lies to blame the previous administration on the disaster that their impending tax increases will cause and they have to create the maximum damage possible for the next few years to create an economic issue to run on. Here we see the beginning of it.
This is why I have been compiling snapshot articles showcasing the good economy before the demoncrats take over congress.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:33 pmSO KISS OFF ANS SHOVE YOUR DS BACK UP THE DONKEY”S BUTT IT CAME FROM
this has to be one of the MOSt corrupt and incomptent
administrations. freakin idiot…
yeh right go shopping while we get half and you get
half.
do you know that $100 ain’t even close to that in value, why?
well for one there’s a profit margin of at least 100% + they
also have to pay 50% in taxes.
so not only on you do they (the rich corrupt public servants)
get half but also the person you buy from has to pay 50% to
a totally corrupt servants.
add in 100% mark up and your lucky if your $100 is worth $25
the solution…… go shopping more :)
dumb ass…. ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU PUKE :(
December 20th, 2006 at 2:33 pmKikiD if you are incapable of supporting your family it is because you are a lazy waste of sperm. A freakish example of why some people should not have children. In this great economy you whimper and cry like a baby. The reason that the world wants to migrate to America and people come here with only the SHIRT ON THEIR BACK AND A DIME IN THEIR POCKET AND BECOME SUCCESS STORIES is because of our much by far superior economy.
Go back to sulking and feeling sorry for yourself if your family had any sense they would take an insurance policy out on you and hope you die so they could move on to bigger and better things.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:41 pmHey everybody look what Jimbo said:
Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!
December 20th, 2006 at 2:43 pmJoeslogic.I have my scrapbook full of economy figures too to wave around in peoples faces here on TP too.And I will. They go way back to 1988 until today.Pretty telling.Bush has done a magnifico job with the economy. The liberals are just pissed that they didn`t get a bigger share of the handout they are so accustomed to getting.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:44 pmI’m outa here.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:45 pmHelp the economy.
Be like our esteemed ‘Secretary of Shoes’ and shop ’till you drop.
Preferably, this is to be done at a time of dire National emergency, so you don’t have to respond to anything ‘icky’ that day.
Macey’s, Bloomingdales, the Mall, wherever you go, just whip out that credit card like Mark Foley’s dick. Thrust in the hand of that cute checkout girl & be happy.
Oh, but buyer beware. Just like Mr. Foley, you will pay later.
And we thought Nixon was bad…
December 20th, 2006 at 2:47 pmshop so you treason, embezzling, criminal zionist asses can take more of my money. kiss my asss.
December 20th, 2006 at 2:51 pmWTF does what Bush said have anything to do with soup kitchens, other than the fact that, thanks to the huge disparity of wealth Bush has created, there is a bigger need for them?
I for one am NOT going shopping because I’m barely able to put a roof over my head and feed my kids and if it weren’t for my parents my kids wouldn’t have a decent Christmas and ironically I work for the GOVERNMENT. So F–K You, George Bush and your “go shopping†bullcrap. Thanks for nothing.
Comment by KikiD — December 20, 2006 @ 1:58 pm
Have you looked into the possibility of another job? There are plenty to go around. Also if you`re kids aren`t above flippin burgers and are old enough, how about that?Remember the family that pays together, stays together.Good advice for you.No more handouts.Enough is enough.Don`t have enough money?Earn more.Keep out of my pockets in the process.Merry Christmas.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:06 pmunbelivable — why dont you guys impeach the ape?
December 20th, 2006 at 3:09 pmYeah, America. Run up those credit card balances. Then when you can’t pay the minimum, ask your Dad to pay them off for you.
That’s the way life works, isn’t it?
December 20th, 2006 at 3:13 pmNow we have proof! The President’s secret advisor is Paris Hilton. Thank God, we’re saved. Anyone that even hints at supporting this innane twit ought to qualify for some sort of disability.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:13 pmDear mister Bush,
With what do I go shopping with? I’m broke. No raise in my income in real terms since 1970… I barely have enough for toilet paper…
December 20th, 2006 at 3:14 pmThis is just sweet as honey. All these hardass wingnuts claiming Jesus as their savior on the one hand, and condemning anything like sharing the wealth on the other – I’m sure your savior’s real fukkin proud of you, Oscar, Joe, and Steve. Thanks for giving everyone the end-all definition of hypocrisy, and may you choke on your wealth, if, in fact, you have any at all – you’re sure as hell spiritually bankrupt, ya hateful SOB’s.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:15 pmYes! That is it! Bush loyalists need to shop till they have maxed out their credit cards, their mortgages, sold all their stocks, stripped their land bare – bankrupted themselves, drank their oil and snorted their coal – instead of doing that with our government’s money, land, and air.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:21 pmJust got back and thanks Oscar and Steve looks like common sense is not extinct. Keep compiling those articles and not just the links the liberal outlets that let one slip through will kills the like and you will no longer be able to show the article.
Look here :
These idiots are so stupid they show for themselves why they are incapable of maintaining here in the country of opportunity. This is fun but I do have to get to work.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:22 pmOh boy dumb shEt is back.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:30 pmwoeslogic,
ANY economic downturn in the new year will be 100% the responsibility of the previous congress you fool. The new congress has yet to be sworn in, so any economic activity taking place now or even next month can NOT be their responsibility. Bush has been so anti-conservative with respect to the size of government. And with all the corporate welfare he’s so fond of, we’ll all soon be “reaping” the rewards of downsizing, outsourcing, and no-bid contracts, while the common citizen is struck with increasing costs for everything from basic needs, to of course, medical care.
Wish, pray, try as you might, but next years economic woes were set into motion over the past 6 years, thanks to the greedy Republican’s and their attempted power grab.
You see, it’s YOUR FAULT. Anyone who voted for Dumbya the 2nd time (incredibly) and/or anyone who continues to support the dumbest guy ever to be called Mr. President is to blame for ANY economic distress in 2007.
Thank you?
December 20th, 2006 at 3:30 pmTeddy Roosevelt was a Republican known as ‘The Trust Buster’. George Bush, another Republican, has destroyed the World’s trust in America and destroyed America’s economy to boot.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:36 pmIf one of us actually was able to ask the President what we are supposed to shop with, as most of us now only make enough money to pay for essentials, I am sure the President would have the same response as he gave the two ladies who were Katrina victims–He’d say that people like us need to go to the Salvation Army and get stuff there.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:46 pmI for one am tired of working just to make enough to be able to eat, sleep, & go to work again, while 1% of our population controls 90% of the country’s wealth.
I’d really like to see the 88% of us that don’t want the war ESCALATED to take action and reduce our purchases to absolute essentials only. Food, Shelter and as little clothing as we must buy to stay warm.
Nothing else. Period. (Except Zooey’s tuition.)
I think your idea is a good one, RUCerious.
(Thanks for letting me pay my tuition)
That really is the only weapon we have if the Congress won’t start the impeachment process. Let’s consider using it.
Comment by RUCerious
This would definitely show just how much power the 88% hold in this country. I would certainly participate.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:51 pmBuying gasoline would definately help our economy boom like it has never boomed before! Ok, so you don’t have a job because Katrina took out the factory you worked in. You still need to buy a new home because Katrina also took that away from you. I want you to get yourself a big loan and buy yourself the priciest house you can’t afford. Don’t mind the dive into dept. Your help to the economy will help you find another job. Suuure, riiight.
December 20th, 2006 at 4:08 pmAnd THEN he’ll complain we’re not saving enough…
December 20th, 2006 at 4:13 pmwhat is it, dumb da dumb?
SHOP OR SAVE? i see a flip-flop.
can’t have it both ways.
December 20th, 2006 at 4:27 pmcorrupt i say CORRUPT
RIGHT….. go shopping more
YOU CAN KISS MY A**
WE’LL GO SHOPPING ALL RIGHT :)
FOR SOME BRAND NEW PUBLIC SERVANTS
THAT ARE NOT CORRUPT AS ****
BUSH… A TOTAL LOST CAUSE
ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU AND I ****
December 20th, 2006 at 4:31 pmAlways with the easy answers. The man has gone completely insane.
December 20th, 2006 at 4:36 pmLISTEN UP PEOPLE
the government DOES NOTHING regarding us consumers and
businesses that provide for products to BUY … NOTHING!!!!!!
they are simply policymakers, they can encourage outsourcing
our jobs and supposely make thing “cheaper”…. yet with a
great cost
DO YOU KNOW HOW CHEAP EVERYTHING WOULD BE IF THOSE
PUBLIC SERVANTS… LEECHES OR LEACHES , WHATEVER IT IS..
DIDN’T SUCK OFF US.
they can tax off to death like the sports team tax in texas enacted
by corrupt bush.
oh yeah… all the wonderful services thy public servants provide to
us THAT WE ALL NEED SO DESERATELY
you know for administrating this country, what should taxes be in
total… 10 – 15%, maybe 20%, probably with world class health
care thrown in
INSTEAD OVER 50%, bet that encourages economic growth :(
ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU…. i know… we are all disgusted
December 20th, 2006 at 4:42 pmto the public servants that have become TOTALLY corrupted
rulers
A foolish nation and their money are easily parted ?????
December 20th, 2006 at 5:04 pmtheres a saying the dollar in your pocket is only worth 20 cents
December 20th, 2006 at 5:07 pm(true if you think about it and in some case a lot less than 20 cents)
I’m going to run up massive debts then relocate to Belize and leave Jason Hendler holding the bag – HA-HA!!!!!
December 20th, 2006 at 5:43 pmoh, i forgot ALL THE WONDERFUL SERVICES.
bet you can’t get them even if you tried, they will wear you
down, lie threw their teeth and make you rake you legal/
medical fees while taking what you paid in service to go
against you and line their pockets.
IF THIS TOTALLY CORRUPT administration had any sense,
they would work out the differences communicating in iraq
like people willing to work out the differences NOT trillions
of $$ to cheney’s pet peaves
i’ll bet you we get 5 cents of service out of what we pay outa
$1 !!!!! . Waste… NO NO … it goes somewheres
so go shopping YOU CAN KISS MY *** !!!!
December 20th, 2006 at 6:00 pmAir Force One’s newest addition:
A When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping – bumper sticker.
December 20th, 2006 at 6:09 pmI see. So, if the economy finally slows down it will be the US’ collective fault for not getting their behind in gear and going out to shop. In no way the Bush administration would be to blame for their lack of cohesive policies that would keep the economy afloat, not at all.
See, they hold the economy by the handle and over the fire but it’s someone else’s fault if it burns. How many times has this man avoided taking responsibility this year alone?
December 20th, 2006 at 6:39 pmRemember people, consumer spending is what drives the economy. If we slow down, so does it.
December 20th, 2006 at 6:57 pmYou think for a minute that the Bushite handlers would let him continue to fack up the country if they saw, say a 12% drop in consumer spending the first three months of 07???
#82 RU
But if it does slow down, it will then be the Dems fault. Remember that, these guys are masters of hiding the salami.
December 20th, 2006 at 7:06 pm#75 Upside –
December 20th, 2006 at 7:11 pmYeah, but oh, the message it would send…
Did you vote for him ??
December 20th, 2006 at 7:37 pmI didn’t !!!!
W doesn’t care what you think … he only cares about himself and the corporate giants he takes care of and has admonished since he was selected president in 2000..
The man cares very little about the little guy … the average worker or the poor guy or the man on the street literally …
IT is all about money … remember that is a fact !!!
Isn’t the “go shopping” mentality the cause of the recession…borrowing against one’s home “value,” going into debt (how much do we owe China as trade inbalance?), etc. to the point that it is becoming un-sustainable????
It’s nice to shop, but fewer are able to pay the bills.
We’ve become over leveraged in debt.
Isn’t there a rise in foreclosures?
Maybe someone should tell Georgie home prices are falling, not rising.
December 20th, 2006 at 8:14 pmAthesists? Get off of your lazy democratic asses.Maybe you could buy more presents then.
Christians Outwork Atheists
Relative to our good old European counterparts, it appears we Americans are setting a bad example for the world by working so damn hard.
The following is an excerpt from an article in the New York Times titled \”Why America Outpaces Europe (Clue: The God Factor).\” The article gives an overview of the religious basis for America\’s sustained economic productivity, as compared with Europe\’s increasing secularization, and subsequent economic stagnation.
December 20th, 2006 at 8:29 pmWhat clinches the Weber thesis is that Northern Europe\’s declines in working hours coincide almost exactly with steep declines in religious observance. In the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, Sweden and Denmark, less than 10 percent of the population now attend church at least once a month, a dramatic decline since the 1960\’s. (Only in Catholic Italy and Ireland do more than a third of the population go to church on a monthly basis.) In the recent Gallup Millennium Survey of religious attitudes, 49 percent of Danes, 52 percent of Norwegians and 55 percent of Swedes said God did not matter to them. In North America, by comparison, 82 percent of respondents said God was \”very importan
Get into debt up to your eyeballs, hell here at the Federal Gubbermint we do it all the time!
I’m gonna need me some stupid plastic crap you can get at WAlly Mart. HEck I gotta use credit to pay for gas, phuck it.
December 20th, 2006 at 9:32 pmNeed to do a better job of editing. This quote obviously taken out of context. But, I guess it doesn’t matter. The real issue here is trying to focus on the economy as if it was a Bush weakness. Stick with the war in Iraq. Presuming the President needs to do a better job with the economy is like telling Hillary she needs to be more understanding with Bill’s liasons.
December 20th, 2006 at 11:16 pmI’m afraid those tax breaks to the wealthy have not trickled down to the r97 percent that really didn’t get a break yet as this same economic problem tainted Reagan and Papa Bush legacy.
December 20th, 2006 at 11:36 pmLET’S GO SHOPPING FOR A NEW PRESIDENT.
Let’s all bone up on Impeachment 101. Let’s see, if Bush and Cheney are convicted ( a slam dunk ) then Nancy is president.
President Nancy Pelosi sure has a nice ring to it.

December 20th, 2006 at 11:40 pmWhat’s being forgotten is that this next recession, like the last one, is inherited from the Clinton administration.
How is it possible that an entirely new recession is a leftover from a previous president? Ask a Republican, they’ll surely make up any reason you like.
December 21st, 2006 at 2:00 amThat`s right!! Si Byl had nothing to do with the postings.I did it.For one simple reason.unbelievable needed to be exposed for the little lying brat that she is.Since she has been exposed and refused to apologize to the board. The postings have now ceased because of one Zooey had asked me very kindly to stop. Her wish has been granted.
Unbelievable, you seem to sweep what your lying words mean to people as you sweep crumbs off the shelf right into the garbage can.You have no need for anyone but yourself. No details necessary. You have shown your ass.To me.To others.
To all the posters on this board. You have shown your real you.It is a very dark and very ugly person that you are.
I trust you`ll be having no problems with posters here in the future.
And try not to play the victim in this when you are anything but.

December 21st, 2006 at 3:05 amIn Midst of War & Recession, Bush Says "Go Shopping More"…
At a news conference, among Bush’s solutions for the 2007 economy: "I encourage you all to go shopping more." (Video at this link)…
December 21st, 2006 at 8:50 amWe now have a lunatic running this country. Bush is a very very very sick man. I wonder how often he thinks of knocking back a few shots of Jack Daniels?
LUNATIC. When a general doesn’t agree (NO SURGE IN TROOPS)this alcoholic and CHEERLEADER(hahahahahaha)they all of a sudden want to spend time with their familes. What is this doing to the moral of our brave troops?
I used to think this war criminal was a puppet, others like Cheney and Rumsfeld pulling his strings. Dumbya is calling the shots. And I want to see a doctor diagnos this mental case.
DELUSIONAL. He’s got this grand illusion fed to him by Connie “Auntie Thomasina”Rice, that he is another Churchill or FDR. But the reality he is another LBJ, another Milosevic, another Saddam. A religious zealot and thug.
To hide behind the bible to enhance your wealth and power and those around you (most notably DICK Cheney, ex CEO of Haliburton, ENOUGH SAID)is pure evil. To enhance your wealth and power by spilling the blood of our brave troops is treasonous.
They should lock this guy up in a room with a case of Jack Daniels and let him drink himself to death, putting himself out of his misery and rescuing our country.
December 21st, 2006 at 11:31 amtell that to the folks still living in cracker-box trailers on the Gulf Coast.
December 21st, 2006 at 11:36 amI don’t think he’s crazy, I think he’s a criminal.
Renew “No Child Left Behind”? Funding $50 million for the expansion of abstinence-only counseling to 20 to 29 year olds?
Shopping is the opiate of the masses. Shopping is your country on drugs.
December 21st, 2006 at 12:07 pmVote with your dollars.
Research purchasing products used or second hand. Consider e-bay as the new wal-mart. Don’t throw away items others might use, search out the needy or donate to your local salvation army. Do you really need a plasma big screen tv? Will it make Donald Trumps complextion any better looking? Young children don’t need boxes and boxes of toys, they seem more content on the wrapping paper. If your kids wants an x-box, ps3 or a nintendo, recommend they find some part-time work for an item that will be in the attic in less than 2 years. Pirate your music until record companies release their artist hostages. Vintage clothing is a hot ticket, remember, the person makes the cloths, not what GAP shoves down your throat as “trendy hot”. Save that $10 and go the the grocery store and not a fast food outlet, prepare your foods for the week and brown bag your lunches. Consider taking a bus to and from work, your car might even last longer. Read some books on home and car maintenance, you’ll save boat loads. Go to the gym and monitor what your feeding your body, being proactive about your health will save you thousands in future perscription drugs. Purchase generic items, bottled water is bottled water..flashy labels and trendy names don’t make the products taste any better.
The power is in your hands. Voting in elections is nothing more than the illussion of choice. Voting with your dollars will truly get attention, in the most profound way. Goodluck if your brave enough to follow this path, I have, and have more money to show for it. Failing to reconsider your spending habits simply means those who do will know exacually who to string up when the shit hits the fan within this decade…..yes this decade, don’t kid yourselves.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:15 pmI still want to know what happened too TWO TRILLION DOLLARS. Do we have that much to waste.
Testimony before the House Appropriations Committee: Fiscal Year 2002 Defense Budget Request
As Given by Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Hugh Shelton, and Comptroller Dov Zakheim, Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC, Monday, July 16, 2001.
Look this up and ask why do we pay taxes when nobody gives a damn.
December 21st, 2006 at 7:42 pmWe pay taxes for the same reason the small business owner pays the mafia protection money. We pay taxes so the elite may have several homes, fully staffed with (their other) servants. We pay taxes because if we don’t, we go to prison. We pay income taxes because the government has made us believe there is a law that says we must…but there is not. Look that up!
December 22nd, 2006 at 5:43 pmYou are correct Blue Velvet, the IRS has their ass kicked more then once. The American public likes to beleve a lie and boy have they had it stuffed up their nose. No wonder people have a breathing problem,,,ha ha.
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:55 am[...] As we work with Congress in the coming year to chart a new course in Iraq and strengthen our military to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we must also work together to achieve important goals for the American people here at home. This work begins with keeping our economy growing. … And I encourage you all to go shopping more. (Go here to see video clip: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/12/20/bush-shopping/). [...]
December 23rd, 2006 at 4:47 pmok… so we go shopping…
has anyone found anyplace that doesn’t sell stuff from overseas workers making 10 cents on the dollar for the same job over here used to make…
then… lest we forget… those same said shoppers’ jobs are now overseas with workers making 10 cents on the dollar for the same job over here used to make…
oh… i get it… can’t shop – too dumb – too lazy – to “librul” – don’t go to church
i see – 300 million Americans, 120 million workforce –
that’s it 120 million global outsourcing entreprenueurs –
why – so silly of me –
we’ll all just “circle charge” ourselves into extreme wealth and happiness while jobs are now overseas with workers making 10 cents on the dollar for the same job over here used to make…
just like the president’s “base” – the “haves” and “have mores” – just like the Iraq fiasco contractors – and Katrina contractors – and california energy markets –
’scuse me… gotta go shopping.
December 25th, 2006 at 7:40 pmBought a washing machine today – did my part – plus now I can clean the clothes
January 2nd, 2007 at 1:17 amHow ironic that this guy is still sitting in the White House instead of a home for the criminally insane.
January 11th, 2007 at 7:18 am[...] You can check out the full press release here. For more on this curious phenomenon, our friends on public radio’s Marketplace deliver their own take. So when those checks come, consumer whores, get out there and spend, spend, spend! As you may remember, it’s your civic duty. [...]
