Talk Host Gallagher: ‘Round Up’ Olbermann, Damon, And ‘Put Them In A Detention Camp’
Yesterday on Fox News, talk radio host Mike Gallagher said the U.S. government should “round up” actor Matt Damon, “The View” host Joy Behar, and MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann and “put them in a detention camp until this war is over because they’re a bunch of traitors.”
Gallagher was upset over Behar’s comment that Time magazine should have chosen a controversial “Hitler-type” like Donald Rumsfeld as its Person of the Year. Gallagher said Damon should also be incarcerated because he “attacked George Bush and Dick Cheney”; he didn’t explain why he wanted to imprison Olbermann. Watch it:
Earlier this year, Gallagher was one of five conservative talk radio hosts invited to the White House to meet with President Bush.

GALLAGHER: You know, it’s a little bit ridiculous that we continue to watch these TV stars and movie stars who smear our leaders. I just wonder, Rob, if you’ll think for a moment what our enemies think of seeing TV personalities compare the outgoing defense secretary to Adolph Hitler. I mean, you know, conservatives never get a pass. Strom Thurmond is wished a happy birthday by Trent Lott and the sky falls in on Trent Lott. But Joy Behar goes on national TV and compares a good man like Rumsfeld to the evilest man in the world and nobody, you know, there’s no repercussions for Joy Behar. I think we should round up all of these folks. Round up Joy Behar. Round up Matt Damon, who last night on MSNBC attacked George Bush and Dick Cheney. Round up Olbermann. Take the whole bunch of them and put them in a detention camp until this war is over because they’re a bunch of traitors.
THOMPSON: They’re not traitors, they’re Americans. And you know what the great thing about America is you get to say what you like and you don’t get thrown into detention camps.
GALLAGHER: No, you don’t.
THOMPSON: And that’s what the rest of the world sees. They see free Americans say what they like without having any fear of going to jail. So, if I wanted to compare someone to Hitler or anybody else, Pol Pot, whatever it might be, I have no fear of going to jail because that is what an America is.
GALLAGHER: There’s such a thing as treason, Rob.
THOMPSON: That’s not treason. That’s just political talk and satire and it might be funny at the best, at the least.

I knwo they are supposed to be a beacon of democracy in the mid east and a military threat to keep the arabs in line from time to time, but they really hhave little strategic value for the US. But Like I said Jorge is missing the point. When the White House or republican party is being criticized it is because we are defending America. I still believe in our country and want our constitution placed back into effect. When the leadership of our country acts unilaterally they say it is in the best interests of our country. But destroying our civil rights at home and our reputation abroad is never in our best interests.
Also Jorge, when you use the term islamists, you are (like the presidennt and the right wing media) lumping together many differing groups of culturally different people wiith diifferent agendas and goals. The Sunni’s and Shiites in Iraq have little in common with each other and little in common with Al Queda. Hammas and the PLO have little in common with AlQueda or the Iraqi insurgency. Take a little time and learn about what you are talking about. And realize that the homogenous terms Islamist, Arabs, Jihadist do not apply to everyone you annd the right wing label as such.

That’s one of the two LPs I have. The other is “Another Monty Python Record”, the one that looks like a classical album cover with the original words scratched out and written over in crayon. It’s got some of the classics: Spam, Spanish Inquisition, and Mary Queen of Scots.
Not that worried about my age, really. I bought those albums when I was in the Navy. They were new here, but I guess they came out in the UK three years earlier (1971).

I get pissed off at the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and Bill O’Reilly all the time. Their ultra right wing pseudo-conservative garbage is vile and disgusting.
But if anyone ever tried to lock them up for expressing their views I would gladly stand by their sides to defend their freedom. No matter what I may think of someone elses speech I have to look at the bigger picture. The Constitution is the final word on free speech. Heck, I may even feel inclined to question the patriotism of anyone who would suggest people should be locked up for expressing an opinion. However, I hold the Constitution close to my heart and I support the right of anyone who wants to say such a thing.
There is a difference between suggesting incarceration and actually incarcerating. Locking people up for exercising their free speech rights would definitely be unpatriotic and evil. I live near one of the largest Japanese internment camps in America and I have a friend who was a child when he was locked up there during WWII. Manzanar. His only crime was being Japanese. He doesn’t even speak Japanese but he suffered none the less. So when I hear this talk about internment camps it strikes a nerve with me. You either believe in the Constitution or you don’t. Or to loosely paraphrase a disturbing quote by Mr. Bush: “You’re either with the Constitution or you’re with the enemy.”
I’m sure someone will flame me for writing this and I fully support your right to do so.
