Anti-Muslim Congressman Has ‘No Intention Of Apologizing’
Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) is under fire for a virulently anti-Muslim letter sent to constituents earlier this month. In the letter, Goode says, “I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States” if we do not adopt “strict immigration policies.” He references the election of Muslim Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), and warns “American citizens” to “wake up” or “there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office.”
Last night, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the letter “sends a message of intolerance” and called on Goode to apologize.
In an interview today with ThinkProgress, Goode’s press secretary Linwood Duncan declared that Goode has “no intention of apologizing.” Duncan repeatedly refused to answer more detailed questions, saying only that Goode’s letter “speaks for itself.” Asked whether Goode had ever targeted Muslim-Americans in his previous statements, Duncan said, “I’ve worked here for 10 years, and I’m not aware of this topic being addressed in the past.” You can call and ask for an apology HERE.

Muslims are no different from anyone else. Most monotheistic religions want to impose their beliefs and laws on everyone else. Is the same with the christian right in this country.
The problems in Europe with the Muslim immigrant population is racism. They cannot get good jobs and are passed over for promotion, etc. In many ways, Europe is having many of the same issues as the US, except in the US the main groups are Mexican and South American.

I myself have criticisms of Islam, as I do with Christianity and most, if not all, major religions out there. But because I criticize Christianity, I don't worry about Christian people being elected to office, since the majority of Congress is Christian. I like many Christians, foremost among them Jimmy Carter.
Goode's remarks, though, don't merely criticize Islam. He suggests calling for the racial profiling of Muslims, and Exclusion Acts that would make the 1882 one whimper in shame; laws that say Muslims can't have certain jobs.

Muslims are also not one distinct group ... there are different levels from the most basic of practicing to nonpracticing.

Wow. So an elected member of congress has decided he won't represent any Muslims in his district. Quick question - what if the Muslim is an American citizen and requires the assistance of his or her elected representative? Should the congressperson be able to pick and choose whom he works for? That doesn't sound right to me. Representatives are elected to work for their constituancies, not a religous movement. It is weak thinking which has brought us to this place. As a pharmacist may or may not decide to fill your prescription (based on the pharmacists beliefs), now a congressperson is putting up notice those citizens he would not want to represent. If people who work for us (congress) cannot do their jobs, then we should force them to resign their office. All US citizens need to be represented - I think it is in the Constitution.

Morality is a part of human beings just as sexual desire is. It has been proven that religion is not needed for morality. Humans don't have to think that some eye in the sky is watching them. Morality grows as humans evolve. Just look at slavery for example. Up until recently slavery was encouraged but today it is simply understood to be wrong - and not just in one country but around the world.

Look, let them have the middle east. Stay there. We shouldn't want to go there. By the way, did you know that if you travel to most of the muslim countries and have a Bible in your luggage, it will be confiscated? I've lost several that way.
We allow religious freedom, but at the caveat that is should and must be seperate from the government. Sharia is the government application of Koranic law. Most muslims are fine with it. No thinking non-muslim should be fine with it.
This country was built on freedom. Islam is counter to freedom. It is an unforgiving religion. This is not bigotry, it is observation and study. I'm pretty liberal in most areas, but in this one, I can see us losing everything that this country is. Just listen to their leaders, particularly coming out of Iran. It's there to see and hear. Pay attention.
The time to do something is now, not later. If we don't, then it is a matter of time before we'll be dealing with this in the streets. Look at the riots that were caused by cartoons. A cartoon? People died over something like that. If that doesn't get your attention, nothing will. Not even Salmon Rushdie being put under a death sentence by some ayatollah.
The only good thing about this whole problem is that it is bound to drive all the races in America together to defend America.

Seriously, DNFP, one thing are governments and another completely, citizens. Of course there are a lot or prejudices, in particular in Mexico regarding US citizens which are seen as being dumb, wealthy and agressive. But all US citizens Ive met were easy-going and nice.
I have one anecdote about prejudices. I was like 12 and we were, my parents and brothers, in Puerto Vallarta, a mexican beach. Then a german couple began talking with my parents about Pablo Neruda, I dont know why. When I found later that the couple were german I asked my father: how do you know if they are not Nazis? And he answered: If they read Neruda, they cant be Nazis.

Wow. Such hatred. Such bigotry. Such ignorance. All displayed in this one set of comments. I do not fear these things like you obviously do for two reasons: 1) Unlike you, I choose not to live in fear of terrorists (because that's what they want and that's how they win.) And 2) The United States is not like those other countries. To assume that what happens there will happen here is to assume that there's no difference between this country and those countries. And that's a HUGE mistake.

Probably no concept has more currency in our politically-correct culture than the notion of tolerance. Unfortunately, one of America's noblest virtues has been so distorted it's become a vice.
There's one word that can stop you in your tracks. That word is "intolerant."
This idea is very popular with post-modernists, that breed of radical skeptics whose ideas command unwarranted respect in the university today. Their rallying cry, "There is no truth," is often followed by an appeal for tolerance.
The tolerant person allegedly occupies neutral ground, a place of complete impartiality where each person is permitted to decide for himself. No judgments allowed. No "forcing" personal views. That all views are equally valid is one of the most entrenched assumptions of a society committed to relativism. And it's a myth.
For all their confident bluster, the relativists' appeal actually asserts two truths, one rational and one moral. The first is the rational "truth" that there is no truth, a clear conflict. The second is the moral truth that one ought to tolerate other's viewpoints. Their stand, contradictory on at least two counts, serves as a warning that the modern notion of tolerance is seriously misguided.
The Tolerance Trick
As it turns out, by the modern definition of tolerance no one is tolerant, or ever can be. It's what my friend Francis Beckwith calls the "passive-aggressive tolerance trick." Returning to the classic understanding of tolerance is the only way to restore any useful meaning to the word. Let me give you a real life example.
Earlier this year I spoke to a class of seniors at a Christian high school in Des Moines, Iowa. I wanted to alert them to this "tolerance trick," but I also wanted to learn how much they had already been taken in by it. I began by writing two sentences on the board. The first expressed the current understanding of tolerance:
"All views have equal merit and none should be considered better than another."
All heads nodded in agreement. Nothing controversial here. Then I wrote the second sentence:
"Jesus is the Messiah and Judaism is wrong for rejecting Him."
Immediately hands flew up. "You can't say that," a coed challenged, clearly annoyed. "That's disrespectful. How would you like it if someone said you were wrong?"
"In fact, that happens to me all the time," I pointed out, "including right now with you. But why should it bother me that someone thinks I'm wrong?"
"It's intolerant," she said, noting that the second statement violated the first statement. What she didn't see was that the first statement also violated itself.
I pointed to the first statement and asked, "Is this a view, the idea that all views have equal merit and none should be considered better than another?" They all agreed.
Then I pointed to the second statement—the "intolerant" one—and asked the same question: "Is this a view?" They studied the sentence for a moment. Slowly my point began to dawn on them. They'd been taken in by the tolerance trick.
If all views have equal merit, then the view that Christians have a better view on Jesus than the Jews have is just as true as the idea that Jews have a better view on Jesus than the Christians do. But this is hopelessly contradictory. If the first statement is what tolerance amounts to, then no one can be tolerant because "tolerance" turns out to be gibberish.
Escaping the Trap "Would you like to know how to get out of this dilemma?" I asked. They nodded. "You must reject this modern distortion of tolerance and return to the classic view." Then I wrote these two principles on the board:
Be egalitarian regarding persons.
Be elitist regarding ideas.[i]
"Egalitarian" was a new word for them. Think "equal," I said. Treat others as having equal standing in value or worth. They knew what an elitist was, though, someone who thought he was better than others. "Right," I said. "When you are elitist regarding ideas, you are acknowledging that some ideas are better than others. And they are. We don't treat all ideas as if they have the same merit, lest we run into contradiction. Some ideas are good, some are bad. Some are true, some are false. Some are brilliant, others are just plain foolish."
The first principle, what might be called "civility," is at the heart of the classical view of tolerance. It can be loosely equated with the word "respect." Tolerance applies to how we treat people we disagree with, not how we treat ideas we think false.
We respect those who hold different beliefs than our own by treating them courteously and allowing their views a place in the public discourse. We may strongly disagree with their ideas and vigorously contend against them in the public square, but we still show respect for the persons in spite of our differences.
Classic tolerance requires that every person be treated courteously with the freedom to express his ideas without fear of reprisal no matter what the view, not that all views have equal worth, merit, or truth.
These two categories are frequently conflated in the muddled thinking created by the myth of tolerance. The view that one person's ideas are no better or truer than another's is simply absurd and contradictory. To argue that some views are false, immoral, or just plain silly does not violate any meaningful definition or standard of tolerance.
Note that respect is accorded to the person, here. Whether his behavior should be tolerated is an entirely different issue. Our laws demonstrate that a man may believe what he likes—and he usually has the liberty to express those beliefs—but he may not behave as he likes. Some behavior is a threat to the common good. Rather than being tolerated (allowed), it is restricted by law. Historically, our culture has emphasized tolerance (respect) of all persons, but never tolerance of all behavior. In Lincoln's words: There is no right to do wrong.
Topsy-Turvy
The modern definition of tolerance turns the classical formula for tolerance on its head:
Be egalitarian regarding ideas.
Be elitist regarding persons.
If you reject another's ideas, you're automatically accused of disrespecting the person (as the coed did with me). On this new view of tolerance no idea or behavior can be opposed—even if done graciously—without inviting the charge of incivility.
To say I'm intolerant of the person because I disagree with his ideas is confused. Ironically, it results in elitism regarding persons. If I think my ideas are better than another's, I can be ill-treated as a person, publicly marginalized and verbally abused as bigoted, disrespectful, ignorant, indecent and—can you believe it—intolerant. Sometimes I can even be sued, punished by law, or forced to attend re-education programs.
Tolerance has thus gone topsy-turvy: Tolerate most beliefs, but don't tolerate (show respect for) those who take exception with those beliefs. Contrary opinions are labeled as "imposing your view on others" and quickly silenced.
This is nonsense and should be abandoned. The myth of tolerance forces everyone into an inevitable "Catch-22," because each person in any debate has a point of view he thinks is correct.
Catch-22
Classical tolerance involves three elements: (1) permitting or allowing (2) a conduct or point of view one disagrees with (3) while respecting the person in the process.
Notice that we can't truly tolerate someone unless we disagree with him. This is critical. We don't "tolerate" people who share our views. They're on our side. There's nothing to put up with. Tolerance is reserved for those we think are wrong, yet we still choose to treat decently and with respect.
This essential element of classical tolerance—disagreement (elitism regarding ideas)—has been completely lost in the modern distortion of the concept. Nowadays if you think someone is wrong, you're called intolerant no matter how you treat him.
This presents a curious problem. One must first think another is wrong in order to exercise true tolerance, yet saying so brings the accusation of intolerance. It's a "Catch-22." According to this approach, true tolerance becomes impossible.
Intellectual Cowardice
Most of what passes for tolerance today is nothing more than intellectual cowardice, a fear of intelligent engagement. Those who brandish the word "intolerant" are unwilling to be challenged by other views or grapple with contrary opinions, or even to consider them. It's easier to hurl an insult—"you intolerant bigot"—than to confront an idea and either refute it or be changed by it. In the modern era, "tolerance" has become intolerance.
Whenever you're charged with intolerance, always ask for a definition. When tolerance means neutrality, that all views are equally valid and true, then no one is ever tolerant because no one is ever neutral about his own views. Point out the contradiction built into the new definition. Point out that this kind tolerance is a myth.

The Koran was written in 656 AD. Islam attacked the West in 633 AD as Islam according to itself. The Koran was written during occupation of parts of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Koran commands what was done from 633 AD onwards, was being done in 656 AD and what they might want to do. The Caliphate controlled the final version. They put into it what they were doing in the war.

Every single religion demands and, in most Western Counties, receive acceptance of their believe systems, yet athiests don't seem to qualify for similar treatment anywhere in the world. Just to illustrate that point: I have gay friend who happens to also be an athiest. He came out of the closet years ago after building up the courage, but still does not tell people of his non-belief for fear of the consequences (job loss, etc). And he lives in a civilized Western country! Don't tell ME you have a hard time because of what you believe! Try not believing in anything... that's tough!

Arab Muslims in America are well assimilated. Moreover, it is stupid to equate Muslims with Arabs. People of Persian or Turkish origin are generally muslims but they are not Arabs. People of Maghrebi origin may be kabyle or berber but not necessarily Arabs. People of Indonesian origin are definitely not arabs.
Moreover, plenty of black American Muslims are descendants of those brought into this country in chains.
I don't hear American Muslims call for a holy war on America.
And the last time I looked, 17 out of the 20 or so 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Has Saudi Arabia ever apologized for producing terrorists? Never. Has the U.S. taken any sanctions against Saudi Arabia or Pakistan for harboring terrorists? No. Quite the contrary, the Bush administration has been falling all over itself to be friendly with those two "allies".
Finally, a historical point. In Germany in the 1930s, the Jews were depicted as money-grubbing people who were part of a vast international conspiracy to financially dominate the world and reduce the Germans to servants to their cause.

You claim the Christians are making The Bill of rights mean less. But yet it is the liberals, The Secular Progressives, and seemingly you yourself that would deny Christians the right of free speech, the right to bear arms to restrain to Government, or The right to vote their convictions. You claim that Christian have cause most of the wars in history. But Christianity only been around for two thousand years and warfare been mans favorite pastime. In 620 when Mohamed started the Moslem goal of world conquest, much of the Middle East was Christian. Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan were Zoroaster. But in about 100 years they had conquered all of that including Christian North Africa, Spain, and Portugal invaded France and Italy in 688 laid siege to Constantinople. And for four hundred years had their way. But when the West sent the crusaders to re-conquer the Holy Lands they screamed unfair. They failed Allah and Allah turned his back on them. But remember the Koran tells them to re-conquer lost lands and so they did about two hundred years later. Fortunately for the West, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane kept them busy for most of the next two hundred years Tamerlane was a Moslem and he love to build pyramids of skull he built at least one of 50,000 Muslims skulls in Iran or Persia, America’s first war was with the Muslim country of Tripoli they were capturing America ships and selling the sailors into slavery. The Marines pit an end to that with the Treaty of Tripoli. Recently Moslems killed Robert Kennedy, Americans in embassies, barracks, beer halls, a ship and 3000 in America itself. When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank that I don't care.
When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed "special" food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being "mishandled, " you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts that I don't care.
And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled "Koran" and other times "Quran." Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and ---- you guessed it - - I don't care ! ! ! ! !
