Number of journalists who died in Iraq in 2006, “the deadliest year for the press in a single country that the Committee to Protect Journalists has ever recorded.”

64 Responses to “32.”

  1. VerbalKint says:

But, but, but….shouldn’t they go out into the countryside to report on the good things happening in Iraq? Only cowards choose the easy way out through death. Damn liberal media.

    /sarcasm off

  2. Karim says:

no one is safe in this war.

  3. Tom says:

That is so sad. If ever there was a time when we needed more information – truthful information – it is now.

  4. Jason M. Hendler says:

Considering that the violence is so much worse in the Sudan, do you suppose this statistic indicates a complete lack of interest in Africans by the mainstream media?

  5. GSD says:

But Fox News and Commander Bill O’Reilly said that all of the journalists live in the Green Zone and report from balconies while eating cavier, drinking champagne and reading Marx.

  6. VerbalKint says:

I feel no remorse for these fools.

A little tip, Generalissimo: we use the “/sarcasm off” descriptor around here, just in case someone doesn’t get the sarcasm.

  7. Rebel In CA says:

The shame of it is that O’Falafel, Sean Insanity, Coultergeist and the other neo-con mouthpieces were not amongst them.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — December 21, 2006 @ 6:41 pm

No Hendler, you dumb jackass, it shows the complete lack of interest in Africans by the GOP hypocrites who have invoked humanitarianism as the reason for the Iraq war.

It has more to do with economics. We aren’t going to lift a finger to help stop what is happening in Sudan because the Chinese have invested a lot in the oil infrastructure that has been built there… and the Chinese have a permaent seat on the UN security council.

As for the journalists, I think how they put themselves into danger like that to try and tell the story to the world is itself a definition in courage. Reporters/journalists have been covering wars for a long time … I think the amount of deaths among these people is in itself indicative of how out of control Iraq has become.

Just to be statistically fair though, anyone have any figures on journalist deaths during vietnam, korea and/or world war II?

  11. tom baker says:

#5 – No, J, it indicates a lack of interest in Africa on the part of the media’s customer, you. Sad, I know. You’re still about ten years and 1500 books away from witty, bro, so do yourself a favor, and read and listen more than you talk or write – it’ll come to you in time.

  12. Jay Randal says:

Send O’Reilly and Hannity over to Iraq to perish and the rest of the FOX News whores!

  13. robert says:

    General,Sir
I am sure that you know this, but you definitly don’t sound anything like the Marine Corps General who’s office is upstairs from mine. Every General I have ever met or worked for was well educated and well spoken. TP should track your IP and block you as you are obviously not who you pretend to be.

  14. Wayne says:

BTW, your costume as a soldier is starting to wear thin. Kinda starting to bug me, if you want to know the truth. Some of us have served and we do not appreciate your attempt at being somebody. Better to be yourself than a fake, no?
    —- Tom

Yeah, these fakers really hit a nerve with me.
I wish TP would report this troll for impersonating a military officer, since they can pull his IP.
It really disrespects our troops and the real vets that have really been in combat and lost friends or family. Also the wounded.
This just shows the GOPers have no real respect for the military.

  15. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #16, Tom Baker Broomstick Cowboy,

I am sure the MSM has a larger audience than just me, so take a good look around you – its your society, and they can’t all be wrong.

Moreover, you effen runt, your ebonics doesn’t even make you cool, much less witty, and it’s not the quantity of books, but the quality of them, and their comprehension, but please, go ahead and boast about your collection of Curious George novels. Consider yourself stepped on – you shit.

  17. Wayne says:

    Mr Fake General,

Impersonating an officer is against the law and the FBI does investigate and bring charges, in fact there have been over 100 cases in the last year with idiots like you claiming falsely to be officers.

The law is Article 134 – (Impersonating a commissioned, warrant, noncommissioned, or petty officer, or an agent or official)

Penalty is 3 years in theslammer, jerkwad.

All of the “General’s” comments should be deleted, since TP cannot support a crime being committed.

Do we all agree that TP should delete this “Armchair General’s” posts? As Wayne said, 3 years minimum.

Wayne, please don’t paint all Repubs with the same brush. People like our friend are the extreme. Some of us can be some-what sane on occasion.

General, give it a rest, you are outed.

My heart goes out to the families of the journalists.

    Comment by Tuber — December 21, 2006 @ 8:00 pm

Tuber, they don’t have families. To begin with, most of them are gay. Certainly the whole lot of them, being the liberals that they are, generally prefer to kill and eat babies rather than raise them. And surely their parents, if they have any decency at all, abandoned them long ago. And lastly, they obviously support the worldwide coordinated Islamic terrorist movement, and we know what kind of “family values” those 900 million terrorists have. Yup, that’s right. They eat their babies too. All of them. Which means they must be cloning themselves to reproduce.

    /sarcasm off

I am honored to be included in that group of bloggers (especially zooey). Yes, I think impersonating a member of the armed forces is weak and lame so I would vote for a ‘time out’. My wife is a lawyer at the State Dept., maybe I’ll ask he to take a look at what our general had to say. It could get interesting.

According to Laura Ingraham, the journalists over there only report from the balconies of their hotels. I guess all of these journalists have been killed by sniper fire, huh?

    True, true

I tend to get a bit ( well more than a bit, LOL ) riled up with the people faking to be vets to try to make their insane rants sound credible.

Have to admit they give a real bad impression of Republicans though.

Well, I used to keep my computer out on the walkway, but the cats kept pissing in the keyboard, so I brought it inside.

So, long story short, I’m inside and toasty warm. :)

My cat wants to sleep on my keyboard – and thats even when I’m using it! I’m glad you are not stuck outside.

My son’s cat won’t walk on the keyboard, but she likes to stand in front of the monitor. At least she keeps it dusted.

  32. Tom says:

No ice here. I’m in southern california – san diego. Its about 60 here.

  33. Zooey says:

Thanks for that taunt, Tom. You just reminded me winter has only just started here in northern Idaho.

We got all the way up to 33 degrees today. I had to wear a sweater.

    :-)

  34. Tom says:

Wow…I met the Doobie Brothers at a very cool old hotel in a town called McCall, ID. It was north of Boise – maybe two hours or so. My friend runs the Chart House restaurant in Boise. Beautiful country. I like the snow. Well, when I can leave it and come home :).

  35. Zooey says:

McCall is soooo beautiful. I went through there once. I tend to travel east and west, rather than south. I’m about 2-3 hours north in Moscow. I love the snow — the more the better.

  37. Tom says:

That’s whats so cool about San Diego. I can (and have) went snow skiing in the day time, then came home and went surfing at sunset. I don’t know of too many places that can do that.

  42. Tom says:

    Zooey,
    Why do you like Muslims?

    Comment by Nasty Nas

Frankly, I live about 250 yards away from a mosque. I don’t like muslims, and I don’t dislike Muslims. They are people who live in my neighborhood and I have not met any yet. When I meet one, I will get to know them and decide whether or not they are a good person – not what religion or skin color they may have. See sir, that is how I think it should be done.

  43. robert says:

  48. JoeShmo says:

anyone remember the abc reporter who almost got his head blown off by an ied? he was riding with his entire torso exposed. there is no way someone didnt say something to him or a warning given…hell common sense would tell you that when the biggest killer in iraq is the ied, you keep your head down. he didnt, and almost paid for it with his life.

this is war, it is dangerous. when a reporter leaves the wire, he assumes the risk. im not sure why so much attention is paid to these people because they just get in the way of service members doing their job. now some of you will argue that its to make sure you get the correct news back at home. well, let me tell you…you will never get the correct news because reporters are not members of the military, they do not take up arms, and therefore cannot appropriately comment on what is going on. Their misrepresentations lead to more extravagandizing by retired generals…many of whom also never saw combat. It all leads to false reports, and mistruths that we form our beliefs by. What I am saying is, be a bit more open minded instead of immediately assuming torture, murder, no wmd (btw there is wmd), because what you get from the media is wrong more often than not.

bottom line is that if a member of the press chooses to leave the wire, they better be prepared for what awaits!

    Lets put this to rest.

“It is less toxic than most things that Americans have under their kitchen sink at this point” Former US weapons inspector David Kay

The chances of finding any WMD stockpiles in Iraq are “close to nil.” Charles Duelfer. Former head of ISG

“It was a surprise to me then, it remains a surprise to me now, that we have not uncovered weapons. It’s not for lack of trying. We’ve been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad, but they’re simply not there.” – Lt. Gen. James Conway, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force
