At midnight on Dec. 31,

hundreds of millions of pages of secret documents that are 25 years old or older will be instantly declassified. “After years of extensions sought by federal agencies behaving like college students facing a term paper, the end of 2006 means the government’s first automatic declassification of records.”

Refresh my memory. When was Iran contra? This doesn’t include stuff from Bush Sr’s criminal activity while VP for Reagan, does it?

  5. Jay Randal says:

Bush Junior still refuses to declassify Bush Senior’s presidential records, nor has he allowed his dad’s dirty past with the CIA to be declassified either.

  6. Jay Randal says:

Post 4 > 25 years ago takes it back to 1981, so the first year of Reagan’s term in office. Bush Senior was president from 1989 thru 1992. Iran/Contra scandal was mid 1980s, so still classified.

President Bush, we implore you to recognize that your policies in the Middle East have not brought democracy or stability, but have profoundly threatened the peace of the region and the world. We urge you to adopt some of the key recommendations of the Iraq Study Group and restart the Middle East peace process, pursue a diplomatic strategy and withdrawal from Iraq, and engage in talks with Iran. Countless lives and hopes for a better future hang on your decision.

so in other words I wouldn’t hold my breath on anything exciting in any of this stuff. As noted above, the JFK material remains under wraps. Nixon Watergate is old news for the most part; remainder will most likely also remain under wraps. So that leaves us with Carter and Ford – what did they even do in office again??!!

i think this explains why the declassification hasn’t been blocked. too much trouble for not much information.

Can’t help but wonder… How much will be declassified and how much simply shredded, to avoid declassification.

Who ordered them to be declassified?

    So…we won’t know what happened on 9/11 until 2026.

    Wonderful.

The government can still classify documents as secret and not disclose them. So the odds of even knowing about 9/11 in 2026 is pretty low.

The people who own this country and the government, otherwise known as Americans.

    #12 and #18

Oh, the Bush administration did, with help from the Clinton administration.

#6, Jay, It will be interesting to see what if anything is out there dealing with Reagan’s approach to Iran/Iraq and Nicaragua. The Hostage situation was the late 1970’s and I wonder what, if anything, from the Reagan papers will shed some light on the hostage release. On top of that the Iran/Iraq war started in the fall of 1980. It was before the elections true, but I have no doubt we were meddling in the war from day one. As to Iran Contra didn’t the Boland amendment pass in 1982 or so? I would imagine that within a very short time of its passage that the Iran/Contra affair actually began. Those papers from 1982 forward will be very interesting to read through. Ultimately though who am I kidding. These papers are to be released by law, and we know what respect this administration has for the rule of law. Heck one of the first things they did upon reaching office was to file suit to block all Reagan era papers from being released.

Someone has commented on papers from bush Seniors CIA reign not being declassified. Remember way back before Bush became a dictator, he dressed down Powell for apologizing to Chilie for the US role in toppling their government way back when senior was director of the CIA.
