"Lenin, Mao, and Stalin, were some of most intolerant people ever to have existed."

Compared to who? I can think of so many more (or just as) intolerant...Hitler, the Tutsi faction in Rwanda, Kim Jong-il, participants in the Darfur genocide, the KKK, participants in the Palestinian conflict, Southen Babtists endorsing constitutional discrimination based on sexual identify (so hateful)...it seems any group who are willing to die for their beliefs are also willing to supress the rights of those who disagree with them..or worse are willing to kill others for their beliefs.

"Agreed, and this proves just how that BS promises of communism can make people do things that they really don’t want to "

Just as the BS of most organized religions (not just Christianity) can brainwash people to do horrible, intolerant things too...I am not condoning those aethist leaders, btw. I just don't think that you can blame an entire conflict or war on one religious group. It's not usually that simple. It sure seemed that instead of just acknowledging the atrocities of the Crusades and assuring that today's Christians are fighting such intolerace, Warren used his time to attack another religious group. Didn't sound like "turning the other cheek" and being a "light to the world" to me.

Both Christianity and aethism inherently lack the idea that the believer (in either philosophy) might be wrong. That uncertainty goes against the very basics of both beliefs. Christianity is so sure of their belief in the Bible that they quote it as proof of their religion and many Christian denominations feel they have to convert those whose beliefs differ. And aethists by definition believe that there is NO god or higer power...no if, ands, buts, or maybes about it. Because of these absolutes, it is my opinion that they both lend all to easily to intolerance and manipulation.

I have to say, though that being able to have an intelligent debate and discussion is a positive sign of increasing tolerance. Freedom of information will hopefully allow futher discussion in our world.

The people inforcing the will of communist leaders, their military forces, were not all aethist. We must also consider how these men rose to power. Hitler used people's religious beliefs to mobilize them to unspeakable acts. In Lenin's example, he rose to power due to the support of the "common man", who wanted to fight the bourgeois during the Revolution of 1917. These were the workers and soldiers of the country.

"Yes, Stalin, Mao, and Lenin thought that organized religions were counterproductive, but there were more than 3 people in communist countries."

Yes, and in those communist countries you had no rights, therefore no ability to speak out against the government.

I think that Rapture brings up an important and valid point about the debate. I think that whether your religious beliefs are or are not mainstream, since people vote with their individual values, religion will never be totally sperated from politics. I thought the show was extremely interesting and revealing. I heard some tolerant viewpoints from both sides, but not all were genuine. Then I had to stop listening to Warren because he said something so unintelligent and misleading he lost all credibility with me. Quotes below:

DR. WARREN: Well, but let me say this to you. You’re exactly right. Sam is overlooking the 20th century. Because the truth of the 20th century is more people were killed in the 20th century by atheist governments than all Christian ideas throughout history combined. When you look at the godless communism, and, and Nazism—which in itself was, was we’re the ruler—tens and tens of millions, maybe a hundred million people were killed in the 20th century by atheists, not by believers. So yes, you can go back to the Crusades, and they were wrong. They were flat out wrong. But let’s take the most recent history. Atheists were what caused the most people—Stalin was an atheist, Mao was an atheist, Hitler was an atheist. He was an occultist, actually. And, and so let’s just make sure that history is told.

MR. RUSSERT: Let me turn back to domestic concerns here, because it is quite interesting watching you and your wife Kay involved in the AIDS movement. Strong evangelical Christians who nonetheless—this is what your wife, Kay Warren, said: “There are consequences that can happen when you’re sinful, but it’s not a sin to be sick.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a problem with the accuracy Warren's comments as well as Russert's lack of questioning of it. Communism was deemed "godless" to assist with the smear campaign of the McCarthy era. Elected officials used the public's religious fervor to fuel the Red Scare. Yes, Stalin, Mao, and Lenin thought that organized religions were counterproductive, but there were more than 3 people in communist countries. And I cannot believe that all of the people in Russia (USSR), for example, were aethists. Futhermore, the Nazis often used the church to justify their stance and included many Christian symbols in the Third Reich. Hitler was raised Catholic, but later denounced the church. Although not Christian, he was was religious according to his closest advisors and friends. Hitler favoured Protestantism, but also imitated some elements of Catholic church organization, liturgy, and phraseology in his politics. His followers were mostly Christian.

The Crusades are deemed as an example of the dangers of Christianity not because of one or two Christian leaders who did wrong, but because the wrong was done by masses of "believers."

From someone who was speaking of tolerance and civility, Warren certainly doesn't understand the meaning of either. He intended his comments to spread through the flanks of Christian believers who will now fight "evil" aethism since Hitler has been made the posterchild for both. Quite the attack on aethism.
