Cheney gets a raise.

By Amanda Terkel on Dec 22nd, 2006 at 11:35 am

Cheney gets a raise.

“President Bush signed an executive order Thursday to raise the pay of federal workers, members of Congress and Vice President Dick Cheney in the new year.” (The federal minimum wage — $5.15 an hour — hasn’t been raised since 1996.)

UPDATE:Congress opted to put off its pay increases until Feb. 16, not Jan. 1, on the urging of the incoming Democratic leaders in the House and Senate. They say no pay raise should kick in until Congress approves an increase in the federal minimum wage.”

The pay rate of Congress should be directly tied to the minimum wage. The only way to raise the pay of Congress critters should be to raise the minimum wage.

Oh, and Congress needs to be paid on an hourly basis, with time cards and everything. Don’t show up…don’t get paid.

How much are they getting.? Well I got my S.S. increase of $24.00 and then of course they increased the the medicare deduction by $6.00 so I got $19.00 total…Right after I was getting a fair amount and they started taking out $89.00 a month last Oct. for medicare…..Hummmm…..When I’m done reading this dreadful book I’m sure I will know no more than I did when they passed the medicare debacle and I was screaming against it. Next stop, the drug benefit’s I have to buy before Dec.31…Thank’s bull shit bush and the worst administration in our history….Blessings

Vice President of the National Education Association was in the high $200,000’s.

Looks like we are getting a bargain, when you consider Cheney gave up his multi-million dollar job as the Chief of Halliburton to serve his country. Thank you, Dick Cheney.

  29. Bluedog49 says:

Paul, I hate to break it to you, but Cheney’s still getting paid by Halliburton and he’s got options worth millions. Incidentally, and I’m sure, coincidentally, Cheney’s policies have made his stock options more valuable. The only people who have “gotten a bargain” are Cheney’s friends in the military industrial complex.

  32. Bluedog49 says:

Paul, do you think “serving his country” includes cooperating with congress? After all, congress is filled with the peoples’ representatives and congress does have a constitutionally mandated job to do. Are we entitled to ask Cheney questions or should we just thank him for his “service?”

Paul, Cheney has said that Americans shouldn’t be concerned with wiretapping if they are innocent anyway. Why shouldn’t Cheney answer questions about his secret energy meetings when Henry Waxman begins asking them next month. After all, if Cheney’s done nothing wrong….

Kevin, I would suggest reading up on the labor movement of the early part of the 20th century. then get back to me on the minimum wage idea.

Exactly why they should not raise the minimum wedge. Don’t get me wrong. Congress and The VP don’t need one ether.

  42. Gregor Samsa says:

If someone wants to make more than the minimum wedge then they get a job that pays more.
    Comment by Kevin — December 22, 2006 @ 2:14 pm

The reason for the minimum wage is precisely that it is far easier to say “move on to a higher paying job” than actually doing it.

When the pool of potential employees is plentiful, employers can tacitly agree on what wages to pay, and the economy is not in the best of shapes, employers do not have anything to bargain with. They are at the mercy of whatever employers want to pay them. Abolishing the minimum wage would more than assure a race to the bottom.

And people making minimum wage do not do little. Unlike Congress, these people actually have to show up for work or be fired.

  43. Bluedog49 says:

Kevin will never let the facts get in the way of a good argument. That’s probably why it’s silly of me to point out that the most recently accepted studies on this subject show that states with higher minimum wages have better economies than those with lower minimum wages. You see, for people like Kevin, politics is like religion — you have a dogma and you won’t let any factual argument get in the way of it. They’ll keep making the same discredited arguments as if they’ve heard nothing.

  44. Bluedog49 says:

Henry Ford, for all his faults, had a brilliant idea: pay your workers enough to buy the product you manufacture. If his factory workers couldn’t afford his automobiles, what was the point in making them. Minimum wage laws work from the same logic.

  45. jake3988 says:

Well, they’re going to work more days so at least they’ll deserve it more.

And hell, they might actually get something done.

But I laud the democrats for wanting a minimum-wage increase first. Thank you. THANK YOU.

    Comment by Bluedog49

Once again, Bluedog49 shows his wisdom. He is correct about ensuring the vast middle class has the means (income) to afford the basic products of industry. I’m not talking about spas and Porsche’s. I’m talking about the basics: Transportation, medical care, proper housing, education, etc…The economy works best when everybody can participate. We really don’t need a situation where 5-10% of the population is making 90-95% of the wealth. The middle class is fundamental to a robust democracy.

  47. Tuber says:

Why is it that those who so object to the minimum wage based upon their free-market “principles” are also the ones who receive government subsidies and cry like babies when anyone threatens to take them away?

Want to take a stab at this one Kevin or is your duplicity too much for even you to bear?

  52. Gregor Samsa says:

    Paul,

That news piece you pasted must be from a year ago, which is when Berger plead guilty and was fined. Also, no originals were found to be missing. Get up to speed already. The only new development I’ve heard on that story is that it was discovered where Berger hid the documents in question.

Second, this is a thread about Pres Bush signing an executive order to increase pay in Congress. Do you have anything to say about that?

Finally, Clinton hasn’t been president in over six years. Wouldn’t it be time for you to let go, and get over it? Without being a Clinton fan, he didn’t invade another country, and didn’t let the deficit get out of control.

  53. Marie says:

Members of Congress, the vice president and most senior federal officials will get a 1.7 percent pay increase, as will federal administrative law judges.
That such a move would even be considered is appalling.
Cheney himself should be served an indictment, not a raise in pay.
The “do-nothing” congress should have their pay docked for the time not worked.

  54. Marie says:

Outrage isn’t necessary in Berger’s case because he has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced appropriately for his actions. The problem, of course, is that those responsible for corruption in the Bush administration have not been held accountable.

  57. John Gilpins says:

Yeah, $162,000 is the over-the-table salary.

These powerful folks are offering NO BID governmental contracts to their friends. Does one offer these lucrative, handsome contracts and not expect something in return? Sure, the RNC is a benefactor but the money chain doesn’t stop there.

Cheney’s $162,000 salary is just pocket change. His net worth is reported to be a little under $100,000,000.

Mary is pregnant, so the salary increase will buy a few diapers. I’m sure Gramps is supporting Mary and Heather Poe. I guess Heather is a former park ranger, and Mary has worked for Coors and the Republican Party.

I assume one must have more than a BEER INCOME ( Coors) to live in Great Falls. In addition, most park rangers’ salaries won’t buy an expensive house in Great Falls. Great Falls is a very, very, very, very upscale community.

  59. paul says:

I guess I was trying to make the point that the story is a little thin. A 2.2% pay raise on $162,000 is only a story in that most people probably didn’t realize the vice president makes so little in light of his responsibilities. The berger reference is in response to those that lament a suspected corruption on the part of the vice president and offer only silence in response to actual liberal wrongdoing. Okay. Berger has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced appropriately for his actions. He was fined $50,000 and sentenced to community service? Image if Rice had been caught intentionally destroying highly classified documents from the national archives. The story would still be dominating the mainstream media (and TP) to this day (and beyond). And there would be little interest in a 2.2% pay raise for the vice president.

  60. paul says:

Sharon, in light of your referring to the Secretary of State as ‘condom rice’, It is appropriate to point out, that, if it hasn’t been used already, your monikor would make for an ideal gay porn movie title and/or stage name for a gay porn star. What do you think?

  61. Bluedog49 says:

    Thanks, Tom!

Paul, what is the point of trying to insist that a given blog discuss any given subject. Shall we go over to Little Green Footballs and ask them why they never mentioned the male whore visiting the whitehouse? Why doesn’t Johah Goldberg have a long discussion about the repub official in Florida arrested for child pornography last week? If you’ve got a cogent argument on a subject being discussed around here, great.

  62. Bluedog49 says:

To a guy like Paul the story “is a little thin.” Cheney, who already makes $162,000 a year and is arguably not living up to his oath to protect the constitution, is getting a raise. The vast majority of working people in the U.S. have seen stagnant or falling wages. Paul doesn’t see a story here.

  63. NO CHILD LEFT TO DRAFT says:

His policies have led to the worst foreign policy blunder in our nation’s history. He has shown little respect for the constitution he took an oath to protect. AND HE’S GETTING A RAISE!! Paul doesn’t see a story here.

  65. paul says:

Bluedog49 and Tom. I understand what you are saying. The Berger reference is in response to posts like 34 and accusations about Bush administration corruption that never seem to be substantiated. I do agree with the Little Green Footballs comparasion.

  66. Marie says:

Paul is like a pesky mosquito here at TP. He brings up year old news like it is fresh because he can’t deal with the rotten news concerning the administration. Ignore him. The more you swat at him the more he will annoy you.

  67. paul says:

Ask youself this question. Everyone else here had the ability to pull the vice president’s salary off the internet in about a minute. If the information is so available, why didn’t TP include it in the post. Answer: They don’t really believe that $162,000 is a lot of money to pay someone with the responsibilities of the vice president and they figured that information makes the raise look reasonable. Any other plausible explanations?

  68. Sue says:

Marie. If we ignore paul and trolls like him, isn’t it just as an admission that his ideas are valid and threaten us?

  69. Tom says:

#65 – Paul. I have no idea why Berger did what he did, but fortunately he was caught and convicted (with sorta a light sentence, if you ask me). And frankly, I constantly get amazed at why certain stories populate the airwaves and why others go under reported. Anyway, right now raises for this administration is the story, and that is what gets talked about. If Cheney were a true patriot, he would donate his salary to a charity because Lord knows he doesn’t need the money (maybe he does, but I doubt it). That also goes for a number of millionaires serving in congress. I remember Mr Reagan getting ’slammed’ for his taking social security when he was getting payments relating to his holding state (CA) and federal office as well as his pension from the actors guild. I won’t judge anybody on this topic, because I don’t know that I would ‘give up’ money that was due me (even if I didn’t need it). That’s a tough call.

They didn’t include the pay of any of the members of Congress either, or any federal worker for that matter. Why?

Answer: The pay is besides the point. The point is that Pres Bush is giving them a pay raise while Congress is neglecting the people who need it the most, i.e., those who are on minimum salary.

Did you follow the link? You will find that the original article didn’t mention it. Did you google it? Many of the articles don’t mention it either.

    What is your point?

Just a little bit, huh?? There’s a stale story for you, let’s drag it up and air it out.
Why won’t Cheney release the detailed notes (and map of the middle east) that were the topics of discussion???

#59: Image if Rice had been caught intentionally destroying highly classified documents from the national archives. The story would still be dominating the mainstream media (and TP) to this day (and beyond).

I’m trying to imagine Rice getting caught. First, I’m a little skeptical of your assumption that the mainstream media would be as interested in the story as you suggest it would. Second, it would be a bigger story than the Berger story, since Rice is the sitting Secretary of State. Berger, presumably, was trying to cover his own ass years after the fact, while Rice still has the ability to make policy.

In any case, I do agree with Tom (and Paul): Berger’s sentence does seem pretty light to me. I don’t know what was in those documents, but anyone caught stealing and destroying classified documents ought to receive a stiffer sentence than Berger did. It’s a pretty weird story, if you ask me.

And yes, I think the relevant part of the Cheney story is not that he makes “only” 162,000 a year (12 times what I make for working 75 hours a week), but that Bush thinks he deserves a cost-of-living pay raise, while he doesn’t think minimum-wage workers should get more than $5.15 an hour.

Where to start? A raise for Cheney and not one for those who actually make this country run is a sick Republican joke. The second part? What responsiblities does the VP have??? Sitting around masturbating? (if he is young enough). I do more work than him in a day than he does in a year.

Looks like a bargain to me!

  85. Nat says:

I concur about the ridiculousness of passing a raise for congress while delaying increasing minimum wage. This further goes to show the politician’s disdain for the average workers. Do you not think that most people who are stuck in dead-end, minimum wage jobs would leap at the chance to earn more if they could? Is it fun to wear a paper hat to work and come home smelling like grease after working a 14-hour day, just to feed the kids and keep a roof over their heads? Yeah, screw working Americans. What have they done for me lately? Hmm. I think I’ll run down to Walmart and pick up a few cheap odds and sods. There had better not be a long line, or the cashier will really hear about it!
