“By the mid-’90s, women earned more than 75 cents for every dollar in hourly pay that men did, up from 65 cents just 15 years earlier. Largely without notice, however, one big group of women has stopped making progress: those with a four-year college degree. The gap between their pay and the pay of male college graduates has actually widened slightly since the mid-’90s.”
I’m all for women getting paid as much as men. I hope they can work with there individual employers to make that happen. If a woman can show that she is doing the same work for less pay she should be able to take that employer to court and have that issue resolved.
December 23rd, 2006 at 3:34 pmI am afraid the trend will continue in 2008. Hillary will be making the same salary as DUHbya but she won’t be getting any vig like King George the Dumb.
December 23rd, 2006 at 4:15 pmVig: (vigorish) the fee paid to a bookie or loan shark usually of a somewhat illegal nature. See: bribe, hush money, kick back, sop, lure, graft, booty, spoils, plunder, loot, pickings, swag, prey, takings, pillage, and just plain old theft. LIE, STEAT, and CHEAL!
December 23rd, 2006 at 4:26 pmClyde. everyone knows that Condoleezza is going to be the next President.
December 23rd, 2006 at 4:41 pmKevin,
She will be President the day after Monica Lewinski is recognized as the second coming of the Virgin Mary. Besides she has changed her name to Condom Rice. KGtD told her she would need all the protection she could get.
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:06 pmActually, and my usual odds ($20 to a glass of warm pee), our next President will be a woman named Nancy (and not Reagan) about January 22, 2007. The day the Senate removes KGtD, the Dick, and Condom as a result of the Bill of Impreachment passed by the House on 10 January 2007.
And that’s all I want for Christmas!
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:11 pmCondi would be such a loser for a candidate it would be great to see the Republicans try that one.
Yeah, the Party that has been on a 3 decade long jihad against single people, Black people and woman are gonna vote for an ambiguously single African American woman.
Hardeeharhar.
She’d get 27%.

December 23rd, 2006 at 5:13 pmGSD,
Add old people, non-salaried-non-management working people, Democrats, Liberals, Gays, Lesbians, Muslims, Jews, Athiests, Agnostics, Mickey Mouse Fan Club Members—actually it would be easier to name the ones they support: (See 3 above) Liars, Steaters, and Chealers!
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:20 pmThe point is that women are still making less than men are and that they’ve lost ground. Working with their individual employers, as Kevin suggested, doesn’t always work, especially if the person with the power to grant raises is a man. There are plenty of men out there who still see women as being not as dedicated to their jobs as men. Yet, as the Times story says, women often get better job-performance reviews than men do.
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:28 pmWhy do progressives hate black women?
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:46 pmSo what do you think the solution is, Katharine?
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:48 pmA womans place is in the kitchen.
When she isn`t making God the Creators babies that is.
Without women in the kitchen, men would go hungry.
And the woman needs to keep him well nourished and satisfied and content to keep his sperm count up so they can create more Christian babies into this world.
Why all the hullballoo? It is very simple really.
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:49 pm#10 Katharine,
Your point is well taken and I totally agree with you in spite of my feeble attempts at humor. Your answer is painfully obvious in the comment provided in #13. As long as there are ignorant, uneducated, biased, stupid, and outdated (the proper noun escapes me so for want of a more proper term please accept) male assholes the situation will not change rapidly. It will, should, and shall reach a point of equality, and the pendulum may very well swing the other way soon. A woman President of the United States regardless of circumstances of birth other than gender, will go a long way. So be it!
December 23rd, 2006 at 6:00 pmI apologize for this comment as I truly support Katharine’s position and reject the comments of Mr. Gino Anatollinni and the obvious biases you may infer. I cannot help but point out that all, or most, of the reknown Gourmet Chefs of the world are male. However, in closer inspection, that fact supports Katharine’s argument and solidifies Gino’s biases. As Gino would argue “They have to feed us at home but no way will I eat out at a place that has a broad as a cook. Man, I couldn’t swallow a bit of my Chanti, slurp one bit of spaghetti, or even say Grace at the table it I knew that the meal wasn’t cooked by a real man.”
December 23rd, 2006 at 6:22 pmClyde the Ripper
Male chefs are predominantly homosexual.
As are male dancers.
Don`t choke on your chianti.
The only thing I want to see widening on my wife is her child bearing hips as they get wider each time she has a Christian baby.
December 23rd, 2006 at 6:43 pmWomen’s second class citizenry is the PRODUCT of religon. WAR is the product of religon.
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:02 pmNeither make any sense.

I apologize kind Sir, I did not know that you and Gino were lovers. Judging from the comments it is hard to tell, however, whom is which. I am reminded of an old limerick that I just made up:
There was a queer from Khartom

December 23rd, 2006 at 7:11 pmClyde, you are in fine form this evening. :)
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:13 pmHey, Zooey!
Where you been lady? I almost had this thread hijacked but the resistance faded into the gingham table clothes and wine bottle candles. I was hoping I could get some support. Thanks for stopping by.
The rest of the family went to the airport to collect the lact of the stragglers leaving me here to baby sit the four dogs and keep them put of Granny’s Christmas present. A swimming pool that, typically, was to be finished Friday and still is little more than a wet hole.
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:40 pmWe already have women holding high government positions (except for president and vice president), so obviously that’s not enough.
It’s an attitude thing. We need to keep Republicans out of the majority long enough to get back to upholding the laws in place rather than gutting them.
And when there is a majority of conservative white males holding office, it encourages the conservative males in middle management to promote and give decent raises only to men. It’s like the increase in bigotry in this country that’s been apparent since Bush and his cronies took office. If all the people at the top are bigots, that encourages all the closet bigots to be openly hateful.
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:42 pmNow that was a Freudian slip. I was charged with keeping them “out” not to “put” them in. Oh well, in keeping with the thread they are all “bitches,” or were as the case may be, and Bob Barker would be proud of me!
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:45 pmHi Clyde,
At least you didn’t put the dogs down, right? Snow for us again today, it’s very nice. I hope it keeps up like they it’s going to.
Oh look, it seems you have your very own dual personality troll.
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:05 pmThat’s sweet.
Thanks for being gentle, wellsley lathrop.
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:06 pm#24 and 25
A number of years ago, during a family gathering such as we are anticipating this weekend, the male members were playing cards while the ladies were watching TV: a talking head show featuring two lesbians. One of the ladies proclaimed that their day was coming and that they would take over the world. My Dear Departed Daddy looked up from his cards and commented “Honey, you better do it in one generation.” Granny and I are proud of our five children (one died in the Service of our Country), eight Grandchildren, and four Great-grand-children. If what you say is true about my sexuality, then that Monitor Lizard that just gave birth to a litter of five conceived by the second recorded instance of virginal birth will have to be moved down (my apologies to Emeril) a notch or seventeen. My Dear Old Departed Daddy may come back and pee in your Chianti and place a hex on your gnocchi.
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:07 pmOh no, Clyde! Hex anything but the gnocchi!
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:10 pmZooey,
Do you know anyone in the advertising business? You can be my agent.
My soul has been cleaned with Tide!
You too can be like Clyde.
Don’t be sad,
you have been had.
Just go back to the side of Tide and Clyde.
It ain’t quite a limerick but it put me back on top!
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:16 pm#30 Zooey
I love you! Just don’t tell True and Granny!
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:17 pmWow! Zooey,
Two proclamations of affection in one thread! Don’t feel bad or torn Dear. I concede, I am too old for you.
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:22 pmclyde your limerick put you back on top
it was really funny too
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:28 pmDr. Warren Farrell, the only man ever elected three times to the Board of the National Organization for Women in NYC, once asked, “If men are paid more for the same work, why would anyone hire a man?â€
He may be sorry he asked. But during the years of research that followed, the answer evolved: Men earn more than women, but not for the same work—for 25 different workplace choices. Men’s choices lead to men earning more money; women’s choices lead to women having better lives.
Men’s trade-offs include working more hours (women typically work more at home); taking more-hazardous assignments (cab-driving; construction; trucking); moving overseas or to an undesirable location on-demand (women’s greater family obligations inhibit this); and training for more-technical jobs with less people contact (e.g., engineering).
Women’s choices appear more likely to involve a balance between work and the rest of life. Women are more likely to balance income with a desire for safety, fulfillment, potential for personal growth, flexibility and proximity-to-home. These lifestyle advantages lead to more people competing for these jobs and thus lower pay
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:30 pmWhat’s a “gender gap” anyway?
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:37 pm#36 johnny,
You should be ashamed of yourself! We have been having a lot of fun with out tomfoolery and you throw in your irrefutable logic. Fie on thee my friend! And with a little careful thought I may be able to wish all of you, friend and foe, and any other form of dual discrimination you choose to adopt, the very best my and your own Supreme Being Bless us all. Peace Sisters and Brothers and Goodnight. Granny is home and I am at peace with Clyde.
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:47 pmClyde, you are hilarious. You better watch yourself or Granny will pepper your ass with birdshot. Have a happy holiday!
December 23rd, 2006 at 8:51 pmWellsley Lathrop, I can’t imagine that you are serious, but in case you are, I hope we will continue to be friendly. I so much appreciate your consideration the other day. I have a man in my life, and we have a lifetime commitment to one another. My best to you, and take care.

A programmers poem or anyone who uses a computer.
‘Twas the night before crisis, and all through the house,
December 23rd, 2006 at 10:27 pmNot a program was working not even a browse.
The programmers were wrung out too mindless to care,
Knowing chances of cutover hadn’t a prayer.
The users were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of inquiries danced in their heads.
When out in the lobby there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my tube to see what was the matter.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Super Programmer, oblivious to fear.
More rapid than eagles, his programs they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name;
On Update! On Add! On Inquiry! On Delete!
On Batch Jobs! On Closing! On Functions Complete!
His eyes were glazed over, his fingers were lean,
From Weekends and nights in front of a screen.
A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread…
Has anyone thought that maybe more and more women are seeking a 4 yr degree, but still choose to have a family in a traditional manner and be a stay-at-home mom? Just a thought. I mean, I know several women that have earned 4 yr degrees, but still desire to be that stay-at-home mom even though they have a degree. Just a thought. I’d love to see the details of the study. (’Cause I’m a dork like that.)
Merry Christmas, folks!
December 23rd, 2006 at 11:10 pmmush-maker
I looked up troll and out popped your picture!
Sorry I can`t include it in this post. However, right beside your picture was your family tree!! I thought I would post it in case you lost your family history.
Your Welcome.
troll
1. v.,n. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban]
To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase “trolling for newbies†which in turn comes from mainstream “trollingâ€, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don\’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.
2. n. An individual who chronically trolls in a sense
1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that they have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand – they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, “Oh, ignore him, he\’s just a troll.†Compare kook.
3. n. [Berkeley]
Computer lab monitor. A popular campus job for CS students. Duties include helping newbies and ensuring that lab policies are followed. Probably so-called because it involves lurking in dark cavelike corners.
Some people claim that the troll (sense 1) is properly a narrower category than flame bait, that a troll is categorized by containing some assertion that is wrong but not overtly controversial. See also Troll-O-Meter.
The use of ‘troll’ in any of these senses is a live metaphor that readily produces elaborations and combining forms. For example, one not infrequently sees the warning “Do not feed the troll†as part of a followup to troll postings.
Troll-O-Meter
Common Usenet jargon for a notional instrument used to measure the provocation level of a Usenet troll. “Come on, everyone! If the above doesn\’t set off the Troll-O-Meter, we\’re going to have to get him to run around with a big blinking sign saying ‘I am a troll, I’m only in it for the controversy and flames\’, and shooting random gobs of Jell-O(tm) at us before the point is proven.†Mentions of the Troll-O-Meter are often accompanied by an ASCII picture of an arrow pointing at a numeric scale.
kook
n. Slang.
A person regarded as strange, eccentric, or crazy.
[Usenet; originally and more formally, net.kook]
Term used to describe a regular poster who continually posts messages with no apparent grounding in reality. Different from a troll, which implies a sort of sly wink on the part of a poster who knows better, kooks really believe what they write, to the extent that they believe anything.
The kook trademark is paranoia and grandiosity. Kooks will often build up elaborate imaginary support structures, fake corporations and the like, and continue to act as if those things are real even after their falsity has been documented in public.
While they may appear harmless, and are usually filtered out by the other regular participants in a newsgroup of mailing list, they can still cause problems because the necessity for these measures is not immediately apparent to newcomers; there are several instances on record, for example, of journalists writing stories with quotes from kooks who caught them unaware.

December 24th, 2006 at 12:48 amScottDrakeISU…I hate to agree with you because I am sure you are a pig but there are factors that these studies don’t take into account. Women tend to take lower paying, part time jobs because of their child-rearing. They tend not to get the advanced degrees (because of child-rearing). The study is totally skewed.

Surely if a woman can have an abortion unfettered, she would surely know about BIRTH CONTROL right?
You women wanted your right to HAVE a baby or not.
And to that end to kill one or not.
Bottom line, women can get childcare for their babies should they CHOOSE to have one.
The same as they can use CONTRACEPTION to AVOID getting pregnant.
The same as they can have an ABORTION if they so choose for whatever reason.
It doesn`t seem right I know, but you are after all the female of the species we call human.
What more rights would you want or expect?
If you want to make more money ALL the time.Don`t have kids.
Same with a male who has to make money ALL the time,is it fair to the kid to grow up without a father because he is always working?
What about men`s rights.
December 24th, 2006 at 1:39 amWow, you need to get on medication Zhivago. That would be JEREMY Parker. I am a full-time single father (24-7). I am thinking you have no reason to lecture me on male rights.
December 24th, 2006 at 1:44 amSo Zhivago, as a father you would say that children are a woman’s responsibility???

However, what you wrote in # 45 could be considered a death threat, transmitted over the http://WWW.. That would make it a Federal crime,a felony, punishable by up to 5 (five) years in prison,and/or a $50,000.ºº dollar fine.
Remember,we know more about you, than you’ll ever know about us.
Got that, JunioR ?

December 24th, 2006 at 7:51 amWell, seems obvious to me.
The Republicans have been in charge for the last 6 years. And since most Republicans claim to be Christians – a patriarchal religion that considers women to be possessions:
“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”
and servants:
20And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
it is not at all a surprise that they would pay women less than men and think it is acceptable.
If they instead knew that man comes form woman in reality (the Y chromosome was an evolution of the X), and that countries with Equal Rights Laws actually have better standards of living, they might realize that oppressing women isn’t in their own best interest. It increase crime rates, infant morality rates, unemployment rates, death rates, and so on.
Making women equal in our culture is in the best interest of our culture for both women and men.
December 24th, 2006 at 10:25 amWhat about men`s rights.
Comment by Dr. Zhivago — December 24, 2006 @ 1:57 am
You already have better than rights…
Make women equal and abortion rates go down too.

What the hell? Zooey, you ok?
December 24th, 2006 at 12:31 pmThanks Jerry, I’m fine. :)
December 24th, 2006 at 4:59 pmWellsley, I am guessing Zooey thinks you are a schmuck and your stalking isn’t helping.
December 25th, 2006 at 10:59 pmWell, unB, men don’t have the same rights in a court of law when it comes to custody. It is getting closer but the patriarchal society is still hurting the single father.
December 25th, 2006 at 11:25 pmWell, unB, men don’t have the same rights in a court of law when it comes to custody. It is getting closer but the patriarchal society is still hurting the single father.
Comment by JPark — December 25, 2006 @ 11:25 pm
There usually are exceptions… I just don’t like pointing them out to trolls :).
I don’t understand why we don’t notice that countries like Sweden, Norway and Germany that have Equal Rights for women are so much better off than countries like The Sudan and China that don’t. And not just better off for women – but for men as well.
December 26th, 2006 at 8:51 amHasn’t Zhivago been a TP poster before? (non-troll). I am lucky in that my ex realizes my son is better off with me or I would be screwed. The US court system would automatically give him to her. That said, I am thinking Sweden, Norway and Germany are a better system to model ourselves after instead of the Sudan and China.

One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result and the knowledge of the value of the result …
