“After years in which Iraq and national security dominated the debate…the return of Democratic control in the House and Senate and the ramping up of the presidential campaigns are expected to bring health policy back into the legislative mix.” Check out the American Progress plan to cover every American HERE.
Republican or Democrat, This is an issue too long ignored by Congress.
Being that these are Politicians, I’m sure it will get screwed up but at least it’s getting addressed…
December 25th, 2006 at 9:01 pmCommunists, socialists…how can we spend federal money on healthcare for Americans when we have important priorities like a 10 billion dollar New Deal program for Iraqis!

America’s power is declining in Asia because of its preoccupation with the Muslim world and deficits, making the U.S. less competitive. Washington, focused on war, is unable to reform health care expenses, strengthen basic education or deal with other structural problems.
December 26th, 2006 at 8:11 am36 Ways the US Is Losing the War on Terror ( Involves Health Care)
December 26th, 2006 at 8:18 amAt the risk of being denounced as just another lunatic liberal, I will say this again. The problem with healthcare in this country isn’t that it costs so much, it’s that they charge so much. I firmly believe that healthcare should be an industry driven by altruism and not capitalism. People who go into that field should be doing it because they want to help people, not because they want to line their own pockets with money. As long as we allow capitalism to be the driving force of our healthcare system, it will never do all the good it could potentially do. The first thing the Democrats need to do is to repeal Billy Tauzin’s Medicare presciption bill (you know, the one written pretty much by the people he left Congress to go work for right after it passed?)

Wayne,
I agree whole heartedly. My wife and I sought out a practioner of hollistic medicine and homeopathy after we saw the pediatrician that we picked only two times. The “doctor” sat with us for a whole four minutes listened to oour concerns and the symptoms our baby was having. He didn’t ask any questions wrote out a prescription and said have a nice day and went off to another room full of patients. After we found a hollisitc and homeopath practitioner we had a problem and tried to contact him on the day before Christmas Eve. We didn’t get a return till late Christmas. We have been paying this man out of pocket because our insurance doesn’t cover it. His excuse was “It’s Christmas”. The only recent good experience has been with my wife’s OBGYN. He didn’t practice his love on her but he was open to the alternative medicine and talked to us as long as we wanted and treated us like a normal person would. In my opinion money has become the only reason many people choose to practice medicine and their financial comfort isn’t what helps patients and the sick.

Another great post Wayne.
After watching my father’s medical circus during his 12 years of cancer, I changed my entire lifestyle in the hope of avoiding doctors and the US corporate medical complex…
I’ve been denounced as a lunatic liberal for basically going organic and vegan. Yet 13 years later, I not only look at least a decade younger than my actual age, but I don’t have any of the problems that many people my age have.
I highly recommend people educate themselves on the dangers of the food that the corporate food industry has sold them on – and take at least a portion of their own health into their own hands… You are what you eat after all…
The United States is overwhelmingly the most sick Industrialized Nation on the planet. We have to ask ourselves why… And I think it does go beyond what we eat.
December 26th, 2006 at 9:34 amUn,
December 26th, 2006 at 10:31 amGood for you that you were able to do that. My wife and I are starting down that path. After we became parents we started looking at what we put in to our bodies a lot closer and decided we were shortening our lives by going through life in the “normal” American lifestyle. It’s not easy to make that change and I hope that it gets easier as time goes by but what advice or insights would you give to people just starting out? We could use some.
It’s about time health care is seriously addressed in the US with the focus on health over profit !
Apologies in advance to those of you who will suffer and die needlessly waiting for health care equal to that of any other industrialized nation.
December 26th, 2006 at 10:35 amOff topic, but I have to post about this somewhere.
At work today (Yes, it is a public holiday out here, yes I had to go in anyway) I was reading through the wire, and came across a nice little unrelated story which, due to copywrite issues, I was not allowed to put up.
You see, it seems that all of this African aid GW has been giving Africa, ostensibly for AIDS relief, has a serious lack of documentation going with it.
Nobody knows how many people have been helped, because some idiot decided to start giving it to a bunch of people known for diverting aide into their own back pockets, without at least making them falsify documents in order to nick it.
Now, my question for you guys is this, is there anything which GW has touched which hasn’t, to some degree, been a complete balls-up?

December 26th, 2006 at 10:50 amDoes anyone know the cause of the post delays on this site? Is it actually moderated?
December 26th, 2006 at 10:51 amgogreen the posts are run through some kind of filter before being posted to keep out spam I believe.
December 26th, 2006 at 10:59 amgogreen,
I wouldn’t say moderated, maybe sometimes monitored. Some pretty horrendous and vile crap gets put up, and sometimes will stay there until we email Judd asking for it to be taken down. I had thought the delay in comments showing up was because of TP’s increased traffic, but things have been pretty quiet lately, so that can’t be it.
Anyone else?

Don’t go cold turkey… it’ll feel more like punishment and you’ll be less inclinded to stick with it. Your body has learned to associate certain food with certain needs and it will be too much to upset that system all at once. Just gradually give up things, and replace them with things that give similar nutritional needs, but without the unnecessary bad fats or processed sugars.
If you give up meat – you will need vitamin supplements – mostly iron, B complex and animo acids (the body does not produce these and it’s harder to get from plant sources that produce much smaller amounts).
If you have the time and inclination – grow a garden and prepare most ofyour own meals (easier to know what you are eating that way).
It will be difficult. It’s not just a change in habits – but it is a change in how we are raised as a culture in America. I think, in the long run, you will be glad you made the effort.
Good luck!
P.S. Excellent cookbook I picked up in SF is “Vegan Planet”… the recipies are easy and have flavor :)

Maybe his marriage? And that’s probably simply a matter of time. Otherwise, I can’t think of anything else…
I suppose it should surprise us that it is so. The man has nothing in his own life that he has actually work for or earned. He has been given everything simply by virtue of his birth. As a result, his leadership is not based on experience but on speculation and hypotheses – which aren’t even educated guesses because he was given his Yale and Harvard degrees as well (I used to date a guy who when to Harvard and worked in the admissions office… he told me that they don’t fail people once they let them in – because philosophically they believe it looks poorly on them. Interestingly enough – their endowments have been shrinking over the years and just recently made news. No wonder with the boy king as their most visible spokesmodel…)

December 26th, 2006 at 12:00 pmYou know what the root of American ill health is?
Okay, I remember hearing from someone all about this test: Take 2 chips, one from a South African take-away, such as maybe, Black Steer, and one from Macdonalds. Leave them out for two weeks and take another look at them, the Steers one has rotted into something quite nasty, the MacDonalds one is still fine.
Moral of the story? If it isn’t good enough for the bacteria that ate the other chip, it isn’t good enough for me.
(Just note that I have always opposed Mickey D’s food ever since I tasted the wretched stuff, I have not personally confirmed the results of the test myself – as I do not want to contribute to the murder of world cookery.)
December 26th, 2006 at 12:27 pmAs can be seen from the bitter battles over health care at the start of the Clinton years, the biggest barrier to change is the insurance companies. The medical care system, which virtually any health provider will tell you is broken, has been sucessfully gamed by the insurers to maximize profits and minimize risks. While this is what insurance companies do, the end result has been to push the poor and the chronically ill out of the for-profit system and onto the public. So we end providing taxpayer-financed health care for the people the insurers deem unprofitable, while they pick the pockets of the more well-to-do. As long as special interests can continue to buy politicians, health-care reform is unattainable.
December 26th, 2006 at 12:44 pmWOO. GO DEMOCRATS.
Health care and minimum wage are at the forefront! WOO!
December 26th, 2006 at 2:07 pmHopefully Dems can frame it as a good thing. I would be surprised if they did. They are mostly gutless. For instance, I have Feingold, who would go balls out on this and I have Kohl, who would hide from it.

Hold that thought, unbelievable. According to the headlines in the tabloids at the supermarket counter, Laura is fed up with George (he’s drinking again) and they are all but divorced right now. (They live separately.) But, again, that’s according to papers like The Enquirer (which, I hear, actually has some good investigative reporting. On real stuff.) But you are right in that it’s probably just a matter of time (if it hasn’t happened already.)
