ThinkFast: December 29, 2006

The incoming Senate — including Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) — plan to revisit the issue of “what legal rights must be protected for detainees held in the war on terrorism.” Reid’s spokesman said the senator would “‘would support attempts to revisit some of the most extreme elements of the bill’ including language stripping detainees of habeas corpus rights.”

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman: “[G]overnment by the radical right has been an utter failure.”

The capture of Osama bin Laden is “a success that hasn’t occurred yet,” according to White House Homeland Security Adviser Frances Frago Townsend.

According to a new AP-AOL News poll, Bush is the top villian of 2006, winning “by a landslide.” Bush “far outdistanced even Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader in hiding; and former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who is scheduled for execution.” (Bush was also chosen as hero of the year, “by a much smaller margin.”)

Iraq “is in the midst of a housing crisis that is worsening by the day,” but “plans to address the problem are minimal.” While “1.8 million Iraqis are living outside the country, 1.6 million more have been displaced within Iraq since the war began. Since February, about 50,000 per month have moved within the country.”

A majority of adults in five European countries and the United States want troops out of Iraq.

And finally: Women in the new Congress may take up the “question of potty parity.” The members-only men’s restroom has a “shoeshine stand, fireplace and television tuned to floor proceedings” and “is nestled a few paces from the House chamber, beside the speaker’s lounge, flanked by Capitol police.” In contrast, reaching the women’s restroom “entails traversing a hall where tourists gather, or entering the minority leader’s office, navigating a corridor that winds past secretarial desks.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

This is what liberals would do if they could. They would shut down opposition and silence dissent. They hate freedom.

Oh the horrors!!!!! If they were smart they could use the opportunity to chat up the minority leader and get on his/her good side to further their own agenda’s.

The capture of Osama bin Laden is “a success that hasn’t occurred yet,”
Now that is some fine spin.

  3. Krazny says:

Bush was also in the same poll voted the top hero as well. I think it shows just how divided our country has become.

  4. Krazny says:

Well if we are using nutjobs from other countries, and claiming there ideaology matches the left or right, you realize, the the fruitcake in Iran, and the current US president are almost identical?

  5. dlet says:

TOWNSEND: Well, I’m not sure — it’s a success that hasn’t occurred yet. I don’t know that I view that as a failure.

I suggest anyone to use that one on their boss/wife/commander/parent/etc. Let me know how it goes. Unfreakin’ real. These people will not admit to failure therefore no adjustment therefore continued failure.

That’s what Rumsfeld meant by “known unknowns.” They know their policies will be successful; when is the big unknown.

This is what Bush cultists do: they make things up out of whole cloth to make themselves feel better. It’s the only way for these sniveling cowards. They are so afraid of their own shadow that they can’t admit they were wrong about their fearless Imbecile-in-Chief.

We also want to dismantle habeus corpus and illegally spy on Americans…..oh wait Bush did that already. Oh well looks like we’ll have to stick to burning flags and kissing gays.

  13. ForTruth says:

Glad to see the Habeas Corpus thing will get re-visited. Most Americans have no idea, maybe this thing can get reversed. No one would ever know how close they came to a fascist state.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – A majority of adults in five European countries and the United States believe the coalition effort should come to an end, according to a poll by Harris Interactive for France 24 and Le Monde. 90 per cent of respondents in France and 84 per cent of respondents in Spain support the withdrawal of all troops from Iraq.

Britain is next on the list with 83 per cent, followed by Germany with 82 per cent, Italy with 77 per cent, and the U.S. with 66 per cent.

US 66% Thats pretty High Maybe Bush should listen … I take it the remaining percentages from each country work in the arms industry

When the Dems take control, I believe Jan. 4th?, they should hold a press conference that very day…Pelosi and Reid should take to the podium and announce…

“The Iraq Occupation is OVER. We the Dems, now in control of the purse strings, are discontinuing funding for Pres. Bush’s war of choice. We’ve allocated just enough money to begin to bring the troops home starting TODAY. There will be no escalation and no “stay the course”. The occupation is officially ending right now. Our brave men and women are coming, at long last, home!”

By beating Bush to the punch and taking an united, forceful stand they’ll earn the admiration of all Americans. Then whatever “decision” Bush has come to will be meaningless. Its the perfect move.

    From the article:

Many media outlets, including RCTV, supported a bungled coup in 2002

Now, what would Bush’s reaction be if the New York Times supported the violent overthrow of His Administration and there was a failed attempt to do so? Somehow, the phrase ‘unlawful enemy combatant’ comes to mind. Think the Right would call for executions for treason? Oh, they already have…yet no protest over Ann Coulter suggesting poisoning a Supreme Court Justice.

For the past 6 years, the Reich-wing has used force and violence to shut down opposition and silence dissent.

TOWNSEND: Well, I’m not sure — it’s a success that hasn’t occurred yet. I don’t know that I view that as a failure.

Look, we can’t do it alone. We understand from the intelligence that he’s most likely in the tribal areas. They are inaccessible. They’re difficult to reach. It’s difficult terrain. And, oh, by the way, it’s part of the sovereign country of Pakistan. The Pakistani governments has reached agreements with tribal leaders. We’ve got concerns about that.

funny, those concerns didn’t stop Bush from invading Afghanistan.

HENRY: Now, there was a major threat that was thwarted. And it was a success back in August. That British terror plot where people wanted to hijack airliners and bring them over to the United States to do all kinds of damage. Do you believe that al Qaeda was behind that?

    TOWNSEND: Absolutely, I do.

Can there be any doubt that CNN is a lackey for Bush? This “plot” was discredited months ago. Why bring it up now? Fear factor.

  166. hellinabucket says:

enough of the Marcon. I haven’t seen much in the media of the Al Qiada statement to allow US soldiers to leave Iraq. Last week an Al Qiada group in Iraq stated they would allow the US forces to leave without being fired upon if we didn’t increase our troop levels. This is the same ploy they have used in the past to push GW’s buttons.

They know the US would look weak if we bow to this strawman request. Al Qiada will not have much of a foot hold in Iraq if it’s chief target goes away. The sectarian violence does not side with Al Qiada.

I would have thought there would be more in the news.

  203. Makes Sensi says:

If ever there was anyone still left out there (maybe hiding under the Christmas tree in the White House) who believes that the invasion and continued occupation of Iraq had anything at all to do with “spreading democracy”, the killing of Saddam Hussein should surely put an end to that.

Apart from the suitability or otherwise of the death penalty, “justice” would also mean trials for all the other much more massive attrocities perpetuated by the regime. The people who have been cheering the execution on this cif surely did not notice that Saddam Hussein was never even tried for any of these? No doubt because of the explosive information that would come out in the trial.

Poor fools. Anybody who is interested in “justice” or “democracy” or any of these lofty ideas should mourn this day. Not mourn the death of Saddam Hussein, but mourn the success of a TV-staged cover-up that will rob hundreds of thousands if not millions (the million dead of the Iraq-Iran war alone) of any justice.

It is no small wonder that SH was not allowed any writing equipment during his incarceration.

The capture of Osama Bin Laden is a “success that hasn’t occurred yet”? Oh, that’s rich, that is! Speaking as someone who’s been a resident of New York City for over the past ten years, I don’t see this as anything remotely close to a success. It’s been over five years since 9/11 — for crying out loud, find him and kill him already!! Saddam Hussein’s sons were killed over three years ago now and his father captured about five months thereafter — we even managed to bag al-Zarqawi earlier this year. Why can’t they find Osama?!? Does this tootsie really need to be reminded that Dubya talked about wanting Osama “dead or alive” shortly after 9/11 — but was “not that concerned about him” less than six months later?

BAGHDAD, Iraq – The official witnesses to Saddam Hussein’s impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime’s atrocities.

The Iraqi government readied all the necessary documents, including a “red card” — an execution order introduced during Saddam’s dictatorship.

An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. Also to be hanged at that time were Saddam’s half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.

While Briseadh na Faire and Zooey clean out said orifices, you have managed to talcum the ‘poopy – diaper’ baby and make off with me, with the million!
Joe is in tow, although staggering a bit…..

  300. Krazny says:

I remember reading a thing during the first Gulf war, that the troops were requesting pantyhose, because it help keep sand out of equipment if placed over air vents.

  301. ForTruth says:

Uh the video camera was dropped in the sand one year, that sucker was DOA. It’s worse than you can imagine.

TrueBlue are we rich now? And Joe can go to hell.

  302. buzzbomb says:

2995 Americans + 650,000 Iraqis dead = a joke of a man hanging from the end of a rope.

Congratulations Bush, I bet Daddy has a tear in his eye.

  303. Krazny says:

    buzzbomb,

don’t forget the memories of 3,000 mangled to justify the war.

I should have stayed in the damned submarine, and let you all get sandblasted.

  307. ForTruth says:

In a way, the severly injured soldiers have it the worst. I would certainly still have the will to live, but damn, it seems like a harsh reality.

Well I am glad I checked back in this afternoon…You all put me in stitches with laughter….Pity the troll’s and indeed you did play nicely….I will forever skip any salad bar and many other thing’s are now off limit’s, forever……Blessings all

  327. Sharon Cox says:

O.K. Zooey and Mr Ho, I admit it I kinda was a flower child just coulden’t attend much with 3 little one’s in tow…Built my own light show…..Easy by the way…I was working at building all weather landing gear boxes for air craft in a factory so the light machine was a piece of cake…….What I miss from that time was the enthusiam we all had for the music, polatics and wanting good change……Something I would like to see again….

    Peace/ Love and Blessings

  328. Zooey says:

    I like this one:

San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)
    Artist: Scott McKenzie Lyrics

If you’re going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you’re going to San Francisco
You’re gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation such a strange vibration
    People in motion
There’s a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

I miss that too, Sharon. Even though I was just a kid in the 60s, I remember the energy was different than it is now. It was more positive then.

  330. Sharon Cox says:

Another good one Zooey, funny thing is many of the Beatles recording’s and all the R&B music played out beautifuly because of the extensive guitar note’s….Yes, we had it all, a line from another song, and now we have to get it back….. Blessings…The old puter is taking forever to post and refresh, guess it’s time for me to paddle my canoe to the other shore..Later all

  331. ForTruth says:

Yes I remember 1968, I was small, but hey, the energy got me dammit.

  332. ForTruth says:

I have that Arlo Guthrie thing, “Alice’s Restaurant” to be played on Thanksgiving of course.

It was all the peace and love. Heh.

    1968 I was in Gitmo — 2 years.

  334. Sharon Cox says:

One last post….For Truth, did Arlo Guthrie do that funny song about the “Titanic”?…Can only remember a tiny bit about it, Oh well……Blessings

  335. ForTruth says:

I’m not sure about that one Sharon. Have a good night.

  336. TerrytheTurtle says:

Zoo – you were in Gitmo? What did you do? How’d u get out?

In other news – Thinkprogress you are again woefully late but curiously in sync with the DLC on HABEAS CORPUS – yes it does matter and yes if you were stuck in a cage with one of Uncle Sams Marines jabbing a broom handle up your asshole every 12 hours you would appreciate access to counsel and a charge to answer….

  337. Uncle_Ho says:

Sharon Cox; you built your own light show? Waaaaaaaay coooooool.

One of my duty postings during the Vietnam war was San Francisco. Uncle Sam really f*cked up there, I turned hippie.

And I bid you good night all.

    Comment by TerrytheTurtle

Yep, in 1968 I was a Navy dependent, 9 years old. Dad took the assignment because it counted as sea duty. Only a brig back then, no prison. It was a fun place to be a kid. Probably isn’t anymore….

Isn’t that amazing….? Why on earth are people so slow on the uptake on this issue?

  340. TerrytheTurtle says:

Zoo, I watched “Road to Gitmo” today – I am still steaming. I’m not naive, this is editorializing a bit and its only one side of the story, I found myself asking myself “why are you people riding into a war zone willingly in a foreign country if you are who you say you are”… but there are too many corroborating stories about what happens in US custody to ignore…

  341. Zooey says:

    Terry,

The whole thing is sick and shameful. And now we have the blood of Saddam Hussein on our hands, too.

We — the United States of America — have done these things.
    It’s horrifying.

  342. Sharon Cox says:

The morning after Hussaine was hung I am again reminded of the fact that the United States gov. made him the dictator he was and helped put him to death….Some in office as I write should also be brought to trial for the same reasons and more….I did not approve of the hanging, nor do I wish that for the guilty of the same offences in office but I do wish to see them jailed for life……

My television is playing non stop the extended funeral processions for a president that was installed for 28 month’s and did very little for his country…Trying to create a saint of a simple man….I wonder, why….I know he was loved by friend’s and family but when do we look to the real peace makers among us and in the past.?…Why can’t we as a people rise up and say down with the war loard’s and praise truly wonderful people who are for peace… Blessings / Peace / Impeach

    Comment by Sharon Cox — December 30, 2006 @ 1:09 pm

i just had a thought – the rush to get saddam executed at this time – coinciding with the ford funeral hoopla – to drown out any thoughts of the US’ connection to the creation of saddam…
this morning on today, i heard a short “history” of saddam – not a single mention of the role the US played in that story…

    imagine that…
