The incoming Senate — including Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) — plan to revisit the issue of “what legal rights must be protected for detainees held in the war on terrorism.” Reid’s spokesman said the senator would “‘would support attempts to revisit some of the most extreme elements of the bill’ including language stripping detainees of habeas corpus rights.”
New York Times columnist Paul Krugman: “[G]overnment by the radical right has been an utter failure.”
The capture of Osama bin Laden is “a success that hasn’t occurred yet,” according to White House Homeland Security Adviser Frances Frago Townsend.
According to a new AP-AOL News poll, Bush is the top villian of 2006, winning “by a landslide.” Bush “far outdistanced even Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader in hiding; and former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who is scheduled for execution.” (Bush was also chosen as hero of the year, “by a much smaller margin.”)
Iraq “is in the midst of a housing crisis that is worsening by the day,” but “plans to address the problem are minimal.” While “1.8 million Iraqis are living outside the country, 1.6 million more have been displaced within Iraq since the war began. Since February, about 50,000 per month have moved within the country.”
A majority of adults in five European countries and the United States want troops out of Iraq.
And finally: Women in the new Congress may take up the “question of potty parity.” The members-only men’s restroom has a “shoeshine stand, fireplace and television tuned to floor proceedings” and “is nestled a few paces from the House chamber, beside the speaker’s lounge, flanked by Capitol police.” In contrast, reaching the women’s restroom “entails traversing a hall where tourists gather, or entering the minority leader’s office, navigating a corridor that winds past secretarial desks.”

Britain is next on the list with 83 per cent, followed by Germany with 82 per cent, Italy with 77 per cent, and the U.S. with 66 per cent.

From the article:
Now, what would Bush’s reaction be if the New York Times supported the violent overthrow of His Administration and there was a failed attempt to do so? Somehow, the phrase ‘unlawful enemy combatant’ comes to mind. Think the Right would call for executions for treason? Oh, they already have…yet no protest over Ann Coulter suggesting poisoning a Supreme Court Justice.

December 29th, 2006 at 12:29 pmI mean, that’s what Frist says we should do.
Right?
Marco et al,
You guys really need to do better than this. I hope the RNC is paying you, but you’re probably stupid enough to do this crap for free.

Shouldn’t we though? Isn’t a common complaint from certain segments of the populace/world community that we rely to much on threats/force and not enough on diplomacy?

December 29th, 2006 at 12:40 pmIslamist “Fascists” or Fundamental Christians? What’s the difference?
Spudge_Boy,
December 29th, 2006 at 12:40 pmmost people on this board agree with me. We should leave Iraq so Iran and Al-Qaeda take it over. We should’ve never gone there or Afganistan. In fact we should’ve attacked Israel That would please the Islamic world and they would be our friends. Islam is a great peaceful religion. It’s very progressive and I think there’s much to learn from it. Keith Ellison was right. They can teach us much about tolerance and justice.
Silly ocraM, Trix are for kids!
December 29th, 2006 at 12:41 pmMarco you are a moron. Give up.
December 29th, 2006 at 12:43 pmHugo Chavez is a great man. I agree with him the Right has no right to speak. Hopefully when Obama becomes president he’ll shut down the Wall St. Journal, Fox News and ban the Republican Party. We only need one party in America. The Democrats believe in equality, justice and global peace.
December 29th, 2006 at 12:44 pmThe Democrats should be the only part allowed!
I also gave them a suggestion on how to use it to their advantage,
Small consolation.
having a bathroom down the hall instead of next to the chambers isn’t a ‘blatant’ lack of equality. Not having a bathroom is.
Comment by squegeeboo — December 29, 2006 @ 12:23 pm
Let me explain… The reason they go down the hall is because they don’t have one. The restroom down the hall was add later.

The Democrats should be the only part allowed!
But will they be interchangeable with all my other parts as they wear out? I can’t really picture a car built of Democrats, let alone one that works (just like all democrats, ZING), but maybe with science and a little elbow grease we can do it.

Don’t you agree with that?
Radical Left – you’re a hapless idiot – take your shitflinging somewhere it matters – like a junior high playground or zoo monkeyhouse. Pathetic idiot rightards just need more, and better education. As far as my intent to stanch your freedom – I wouldn’t want to get close enough to you to do it, and I sure as hell wouldn’t ask anyone else to do something I wouldn’t do myself (unlike righties, who can’t assume responsibility for themselves in anything). If you want to lie, and suggest that I love Hugo, or hate Israel, then expect me to lie about you in return, and speculate that you are a pedophile, who sits around the house listening to Hannity on the radio while cleaning your assault rifle and fantasizing about going on a judge-killing spree with Ann Coulter, like most of you rightards do. KMA, GFY, and STFU.

Well yes, some people take any disadvantage and find ways to make it an advantage. Other people sit around and complain how it’s not fair. Then the person who takes a disadvantage and turns it into an advantage gets called unfair by the side that is now disadvantaged. Kinda a vicious circle really.

December 29th, 2006 at 1:12 pmenough of the Marcon. I haven’t seen much in the media of the Al Qiada statement to allow US soldiers to leave Iraq. Last week an Al Qiada group in Iraq stated they would allow the US forces to leave without being fired upon if we didn’t increase our troop levels. This is the same ploy they have used in the past to push GW’s buttons.
They know the US would look weak if we bow to this strawman request. Al Qiada will not have much of a foot hold in Iraq if it’s chief target goes away. The sectarian violence does not side with Al Qiada.
I would have thought there would be more in the news.

If URCerious about a diet, I recommend the low carb (50 grams a day) 6 days a week, with an off day (reward) of eating whatever you like
Excercise 6 days a week, alternating days of cardio and weights.
Worked for me just fine, lost about 25 lbs in about 45 days, and altered my cholesterol. LDLs (bad) dropped and HDLs (good) signifcantly increased.
Back on topic. Al Kaline diet, huh? Geez, I thought you were talking about the Cecil Fielder diet!

December 29th, 2006 at 1:51 pmIf ever there was anyone still left out there (maybe hiding under the Christmas tree in the White House) who believes that the invasion and continued occupation of Iraq had anything at all to do with “spreading democracy”, the killing of Saddam Hussein should surely put an end to that.
Apart from the suitability or otherwise of the death penalty, “justice” would also mean trials for all the other much more massive attrocities perpetuated by the regime. The people who have been cheering the execution on this cif surely did not notice that Saddam Hussein was never even tried for any of these? No doubt because of the explosive information that would come out in the trial.
Poor fools. Anybody who is interested in “justice” or “democracy” or any of these lofty ideas should mourn this day. Not mourn the death of Saddam Hussein, but mourn the success of a TV-staged cover-up that will rob hundreds of thousands if not millions (the million dead of the Iraq-Iran war alone) of any justice.
It is no small wonder that SH was not allowed any writing equipment during his incarceration.
December 29th, 2006 at 1:51 pmI hate it when its crowded and a guy can’t get the “buffer” urinal, you know the one in-between with no-one there.

December 29th, 2006 at 1:53 pmThanks for the diet advice, DRxJ! I’m very glad it’s the Al Kaline diet and not the Cecil Fielder diet, I want to lose weight! (my apologies to Cecil Fielder fans.)
Well, I hate to eat and run, but I’m through at work (we get out at 1:00 on Fridays) and have errands to run.
Briseadh na Faire, I’m going to see if our Irish friends that we’ll be with New Year’s Eve will be able to pronounce your name (I’ll test them to see if they even know what it means.)
Happy New Year, Judd, Payson, Nico, Amanda, Faiz, and everyone else here, except the trolls!
December 29th, 2006 at 1:53 pmI don’t have hard feelings about Saddam getting killed. I just don’t see what it will accomplish.
December 29th, 2006 at 1:53 pmThe capture of Osama Bin Laden is a “success that hasn’t occurred yet”? Oh, that’s rich, that is! Speaking as someone who’s been a resident of New York City for over the past ten years, I don’t see this as anything remotely close to a success. It’s been over five years since 9/11 — for crying out loud, find him and kill him already!! Saddam Hussein’s sons were killed over three years ago now and his father captured about five months thereafter — we even managed to bag al-Zarqawi earlier this year. Why can’t they find Osama?!? Does this tootsie really need to be reminded that Dubya talked about wanting Osama “dead or alive” shortly after 9/11 — but was “not that concerned about him” less than six months later?
December 29th, 2006 at 1:54 pmThey should move the urinals really high up on the bathroom wall. So if any guy can’t make it, he must have a small unit.

December 29th, 2006 at 1:56 pmDang was going to see if I could find the urinal peeing game, but the link doesn’t work anymore. It was a flash thing where it gave you choices and showed where others stood, and you had to figure it out.

I’m sure I don’t know what you’re referring to. Heh.
Ok, I know what you’re talking about, I just don’t have actual memories of them from the 60s.

I always wanted to be a flower child…
December 29th, 2006 at 7:57 pmO.K. Zooey and Mr Ho, I admit it I kinda was a flower child just coulden’t attend much with 3 little one’s in tow…Built my own light show…..Easy by the way…I was working at building all weather landing gear boxes for air craft in a factory so the light machine was a piece of cake…….What I miss from that time was the enthusiam we all had for the music, polatics and wanting good change……Something I would like to see again….

December 29th, 2006 at 8:07 pmI like this one:
San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)
Artist: Scott McKenzie Lyrics
If you’re going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you’re going to San Francisco
You’re gonna meet some gentle people there
For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair
All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There’s a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion
For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
If you come to San Francisco

I miss that too, Sharon. Even though I was just a kid in the 60s, I remember the energy was different than it is now. It was more positive then.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:13 pmAnother good one Zooey, funny thing is many of the Beatles recording’s and all the R&B music played out beautifuly because of the extensive guitar note’s….Yes, we had it all, a line from another song, and now we have to get it back….. Blessings…The old puter is taking forever to post and refresh, guess it’s time for me to paddle my canoe to the other shore..Later all
December 29th, 2006 at 8:33 pmYes I remember 1968, I was small, but hey, the energy got me dammit.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:33 pmI have that Arlo Guthrie thing, “Alice’s Restaurant” to be played on Thanksgiving of course.

It was all the peace and love. Heh.
1968 I was in Gitmo — 2 years.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:39 pmOne last post….For Truth, did Arlo Guthrie do that funny song about the “Titanic”?…Can only remember a tiny bit about it, Oh well……Blessings
December 29th, 2006 at 8:39 pmI’m not sure about that one Sharon. Have a good night.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:44 pmZoo – you were in Gitmo? What did you do? How’d u get out?
In other news – Thinkprogress you are again woefully late but curiously in sync with the DLC on HABEAS CORPUS – yes it does matter and yes if you were stuck in a cage with one of Uncle Sams Marines jabbing a broom handle up your asshole every 12 hours you would appreciate access to counsel and a charge to answer….
December 29th, 2006 at 8:50 pmSharon Cox; you built your own light show? Waaaaaaaay coooooool.
And I bid you good night all.

Yep, in 1968 I was a Navy dependent, 9 years old. Dad took the assignment because it counted as sea duty. Only a brig back then, no prison. It was a fun place to be a kid. Probably isn’t anymore….

Isn’t that amazing….? Why on earth are people so slow on the uptake on this issue?
December 29th, 2006 at 9:12 pmZoo, I watched “Road to Gitmo” today – I am still steaming. I’m not naive, this is editorializing a bit and its only one side of the story, I found myself asking myself “why are you people riding into a war zone willingly in a foreign country if you are who you say you are”… but there are too many corroborating stories about what happens in US custody to ignore…
December 29th, 2006 at 11:05 pmTerry,
The whole thing is sick and shameful. And now we have the blood of Saddam Hussein on our hands, too.
We — the United States of America — have done these things.
December 29th, 2006 at 11:24 pmIt’s horrifying.
The morning after Hussaine was hung I am again reminded of the fact that the United States gov. made him the dictator he was and helped put him to death….Some in office as I write should also be brought to trial for the same reasons and more….I did not approve of the hanging, nor do I wish that for the guilty of the same offences in office but I do wish to see them jailed for life……
My television is playing non stop the extended funeral processions for a president that was installed for 28 month’s and did very little for his country…Trying to create a saint of a simple man….I wonder, why….I know he was loved by friend’s and family but when do we look to the real peace makers among us and in the past.?…Why can’t we as a people rise up and say down with the war loard’s and praise truly wonderful people who are for peace… Blessings / Peace / Impeach

i just had a thought – the rush to get saddam executed at this time – coinciding with the ford funeral hoopla – to drown out any thoughts of the US’ connection to the creation of saddam…
this morning on today, i heard a short “history” of saddam – not a single mention of the role the US played in that story…
imagine that…
