Global Language Monitor, an organization that “documents, analyzes and tracks trends in language the world over” has named “stay the course” the top catchphrase of 2006.
The phrase was used repeatedly by the Bush administration to describe their strategy in Iraq. Watch just a few examples:
Subsequently, the White House subsequently claimed their policy has “never been…stay the course.” President Bush will soon unveil a “new way forward” for Iraq, which is expected to involve sending more U.S. troops to Iraq.
Catch Phrases aka Framing is like a burrito one might purchase from a Roach Coach. Sure it looks good when your really hungry but when eat it you soon discover that it is just a gut bomb.
The same as with this pychological catch-phrase Lakoffian crap.
No more Burritos!!
January 1st, 2007 at 1:39 pmIt’s hilarious that a phrase which represents something the White House claims has never been their policy, ends up the top catchphrase of 2006.
Where the hell did Global Language Monitor get that idea?
OT: Why the hell do they have podiums out there on the dirt flats of Texas?
January 1st, 2007 at 1:40 pmAll of us have been bombarded with catchie phrases for the invasions and this bunch’s speel by the cheer leader in charge from the beginning og of their term’s take over…..I have one word that will suit us all ……Impeachment..Blessings
January 1st, 2007 at 1:40 pmOf course, the American people—through their votes—delivered the message that they don’t want a “way forward”; we want a “way OUT.”
January 1st, 2007 at 1:44 pmWhy? According to Snowjob, Bush has NEVER used that phrase or even advocated anything along those lines.
No, it’s always been…um……er,,,,,,,,”Adapt to Win”. Yes, that’s it. Damn the Liberal Media and their doctored videos.

IMPEACH BUSH AND COMPANY!
January 1st, 2007 at 1:44 pmIsn’t “a new way forward” just another way of saying “stay the course”?
Both talk about following a path.

The dumbest President ever
The only President appointed by the Supreme Court after losing an election
The highest deficit in history

The worst President ever
And there is more.
All said Dubya is a drunken AWOL coward who the GOP cleaned up thinking he could change…he is and will remain the worst thing that has ever happened this great nation.

January 1st, 2007 at 1:58 pmBush’s new phrase for 2007: More Of The Same Stupidity! Untill Bush is gone we will continue to all suffer!
Off to work in my yard. Take care all and Happy New Year to everyone.
January 1st, 2007 at 2:03 pmIt is beyond me why anyone would believe the mendacious Bush or his mouthpieces. The lying is transparent and prolific, and the cynicism is breathtaking.
January 1st, 2007 at 2:11 pmI can see it all now…fastforward a couple of years to a place where the Bush legacy has become one of sheer comedy (except for the unnecessary killing of our troops)….the new play on broadway will be a parody of Bushisms, Bushfauxpas, and the like….entitled: “Stay the Course”. Isn’t this an old fisherman’s catch phrase? It wouldn’t be so comedic if a legitimate “course” had ever been identified….it will be something like The Three Stooges “who’s on first” routine and will go down in infamy as the presidential jokester….Larry, Moe & Georgie…..
Can’t you just hear it now….Stay the course……what course?…..the course that is the plan…..what plan? The plan that was fixed to make a course…..what was fixed? The course was fixed…..what course??
What a sick, demented joke this has become.
January 1st, 2007 at 2:35 pmLet’s “stay the course on impeachment”…….Stay the Impeachment Course is the new mantra of the american people and the people will settle for nothing less.

And that’s The Word for 2007.
January 1st, 2007 at 3:38 pmIt’s not suprising that “Stay the course” was named top catch phrase of the year. After all the President, Vice President, and every administration official on the planet used it repeatedly to deflect any critics or anyone qho questioned their policy. However, as has been pointed out since the media has gotten it’s collective head of out it’s butt, “Stay the course”, isn’t a strategy for winning a war. While they were using their signature catch phrase our soldiers were dying in greater and greater numbers in Iraq.
I unlike most of the highly educated fools who run this country knew that a catchy phrase wasn’t going to change a thing on the ground. Our soldiers can’t use it when they are getting blown to hell or lay dying in a pool of blood. A medic can’t reassure a dying soldier by telling him to “Stay the course”. The harsh reality of it is that people die in war and no amount of bull—- is going to change that.
No we have, “The way forward”, so I suppose our soldiers can use it as armor to stop bullets.

i was very glad to hear that, and told him i thought it was a mistake from the beginning, for the wrong reasons and he was nodding the whole time and said he agreed…
before i left i made a point of telling him that he and his buddies should know that those like me, who hate the bushco and the war, were very much behind the service people, that we know they did what they had to do and did it well, and we just want them out of there now… he was nodding the whole time and said he appreciated my saying that, and i told him to tell his buds and he said they all know that too… another big hug (i was near tears)… i could tell he’d seen a kind of hell and was ever so glad to be out of it…
damn those neoCON criminals, all of them…

January 1st, 2007 at 5:17 pmNot only is the Bush administation stealing elections, they’re also stealing slogans.
As we all know Ford Motor Car Company’s balance sheet has been in the red for quite some time. A few years, they most likely hired a prestigious New York advertising firm, for a couple of million dollars, to come up with a catchy slogan. These wise and smart advertising people came up with the very catchy slogan: ‘WAY FORWARD.”
I’m not an attorney, but don’t you think ” WAY FORWARD” and “A NEW WAY FORWARD” are pretty darn similar? I sure do! I think Ford has legal grounds to sue the Bush administration. They’re stealing slogans. Ford, take the Bush administration to court.
Gosh, I think Ford’s financial future may be looking a little brighter. With the Bush administration forking over a $100,000,000 or so, that should help Ford just a bit. Just a small bit. I think they’re several billion dollars in the hole, but a $100,000,000 would be welcome news.
“Staying the course?” I don’t get that. Are these rich, affluent Bush adminstration officials talking about staying on the posh country club GOLF COURSE. That would be nice: “STAY THE COURSE.”
When one thinks about it, our country is being screwed by this administration. Screwed is the operative word here.
“STAYING THE INTERC***SE” sounds like a fabulous, fabulous, fabulous slogan to me.
John
January 1st, 2007 at 5:21 pm#23…I definitely remember Bush Sr. using “stay the course” first. He used it to deny all the failures of his presidency, especially the recession, and to try to convince us that we should not elect someone else who would actually do something. Instead of meaning “resolve,” staying the course came to mean stubborness and George Sr. was booted out of office.
Bush Jr. used “stay the course” to mean “resolve” to win his “war” in Iraq, no matter what the reality of the situation was. He wanted to tie his legacy to his father to prove to Americans that if they cut out Clinton, the Bush’s “staying the course” strategy would always be a winner for America.
In his attempt to prove that “stay the course” means to win through “resolve,” Bush Jr. has merely proven once again that staying the course simply means more stubborness and failure. His bungled attempt to connect a winning legacy with his father has shown to the American people, more than ever, what a great president Clinton was.
January 1st, 2007 at 5:25 pm#15, “It is beyond me why anyone would believe the mendacious Bush or his mouthpieces. The lying is transparent and prolific, and the cynicism is breathtaking.”
Amazing, isn’t it? THEY AREN’T EVEN GOOD AT LYING. This is one of the things that keeps me removing the sharp objects from my vicinity.
The only “sense” I can make of it, and it is precious little, is that some part of the collective id (I often write “testicles” here, but that can be misconstrued) is so hungry for any form of validation, any yeeehaaaaaww proof of “Amurrrica STILL #1!” that they’ll get behind this mediocre frat boy’s quest to bring whatever is understood as “Democracy” to … uh, whichever Ay-rabs we don’t kill. Which ones is they, agin?
No doubt that is just way to facile, but for some reason I think of Bob Dylan’s immortal line:
“A lot of people don’t have much food on their table, but they got a lot of forks and knives, and they gotta cut something.”
Cuz, uh, otherwise, what’s there to DO? No one’s bowing down to my American a**!
January 1st, 2007 at 5:32 pmLet’s see:
January 1st, 2007 at 5:35 pm
I didn’t see Bush at the Ford service today. I guess I can see him shortly on the evening news. Apparently, he didn’t look all that great. He’s not aging well at all. Laura is looking better, and better but Dumbo is not. I assume Laura has had a little surgery.
I would assume Bush is a little steamed about Ford’s Iraq comments. No doubt, that’s why Bush didn’t fly up to Washington sooner. The entire city of Washington was mourning Ford’s death, and Dumbo is down at the Texas ranch. Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!
Dumbo’s approval ratings are almost in the single digits now, and he should have been up in Washington scoring a few PR points–at least “PRETENDING” to be a nice person.
I guess Ford’s Iraq comments are for real. It sounds like his voice? I don’t understand why Woodward would use a $12.99 tape recorder. Woodward is worth millions, and he records Ford’s comments on a $12.99 tape recorder. I would be using a $25,000 video camera, as you want to have the best possible tape that money can buy.

January 1st, 2007 at 6:50 pmNew Year’s Day And Bush Wanted Saddam Hanged Before New Year!
Monday 1st of January 2007
by Jay Randal
President George W. Bush is trying to claim he had nothing to do with Saddam being hanged, before the New Year, but Bush did nothing to stop the hanging.
Saddam Hussein was in the custody of US military, before he was turned over to Shia thugs who lynched him, so Bush himself is responsible for the lynching.
The Iraqi PM Nuri Kamal al-Maliki is only a stooge, who does what he is told by the Bush Administration, so Dubya could have halted this farce if he wanted to.
Now to attempt to lay all the blame on PM al-Maliki is disingenuous, and is a cover-up for wanting Saddam dead before the New Year, so to shut him up forever.
Bush family did NOT want Saddam to spill the beans, on all the US dirty laundry in a real court of law, so he was tried in a kangaroo court and sentenced to death.
Will the new Congress investigate this sham in Iraq?

“STAY THE INTERC***SE” seems to more adequately describe what this administration is all about than “STAY THE COURSE.”
Previously, I thought only the Democrats had all of the fun. You know– Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Wilbur Mills, etc.
Now that the real truth has come out, I think the Republicans could teach the Democrats a thing or two about having fun. These sorry bunch of losers make Heidi Fleiss look like Mother Teresa.
Justice eventually caught up with Saddam. I do wonder if justice will eventually catch up with some of these rotten folks. I wouldn’t be on it. The world is a crazy place, and toooooo many scoundrels live the good life until their final breath.

Your exchange just reminds me of my family on holiday reunions. Heh. :)
January 1st, 2007 at 10:16 pmyeesh… if aphro’s sorry story NEVER came up again, i would be happy…
January 1st, 2007 at 10:23 pmi know, i know…
Heh. I’m forever the peacemaker — except, oddly enough, in my actual extended family. Noogies for everyone!
January 1st, 2007 at 10:24 pmkaty,
Several of us decided a few days ago that every time Hagette started with her crap, someone would put up the joke she made about her dead child, so people would know what kind of person she really is.
January 1st, 2007 at 10:27 pmWhat’s a hippy? Whatever it is, it sounds real “groovy.” I think George Bush was once a hippy.
Well, maybe it was yuppie? Fundie? Preppie? No! No! Let’s see, yuppies drive bright, multi-colored 1960s VW vans, and hippies drive Mercedes and Jaguars. I think that’s it. Preppies wear overalls with little pigs on them. Or is it alligators?
Yeah, some do suffer in their own private hell. It must be understandably rough for them. Living in a $7,000,000 dollar house would be hell. Sitting eight hours a day out by the pool would be rough, too. We should feel sorry for them. They would all trade places with us in a nanosecond.

January 1st, 2007 at 10:34 pmZ- You can do the variation on that, where you saunter off to the kitchen, get the can of whipped cream from the fridge and resume the fray with some frenzied whipped cream fights!
January 1st, 2007 at 10:35 pmAnd Wellsley troll alert? You need to fix your trolldar.
January 1st, 2007 at 10:39 pmHeh. I’m forever the peacemaker — except, oddly enough, in my actual extended family. Noogies for everyone!
Eh, I would probably be happier if I were that way but I am a confrontational SOB. Oh, well.
January 1st, 2007 at 10:41 pmI wonder how long it will be until “the new way forward” is disavowed and denied by the spinsters.?
January 1st, 2007 at 10:51 pmI give it two months.

January 1st, 2007 at 10:51 pmZ- It’s actually hard to tell who’s who under the bandages and shitload of whipping cream!!

January 1st, 2007 at 10:59 pmAs soon as our nazi in chief institutes his escalation plan we will see something along the lines of a Tet offensive. This is going to be a failure and bush should be hung and kicked in public like moussilini.
January 1st, 2007 at 11:00 pm#160 I think it means he only did a half a line of coke!
January 1st, 2007 at 11:00 pm#167 You always have to have the last word even after I have tried to make peace, don’t you, katy?

I think I understand your concern, but after your post I would ask: Who cares?
January 1st, 2007 at 11:15 pmIf she is this or that…what? As long as she keeps posting with decency and make contributions to the topic I dont have a problem…
K, I am sensing I am going to owe a lot of apologies. #172 is messed up.
January 1st, 2007 at 11:15 pm#176 Ach, I am so sorry. I read your previous post (which was less than polite, infering that I had no ammo).
January 1st, 2007 at 11:17 pm#176 “Borderline Bush” means he was half as messed up as Bush. He was pretty screwed up but only half as screwed up as Bush is every time he makes a decision (my interpretation).
January 1st, 2007 at 11:18 pmBy the way, I once posted as Yenta 2. So? Am I a troll?

That was a good one, Juan. Then you went back to commenting as yourself, but you forgot to change your name back! Which is exactly what I always do as Yenta!
I once commented as “Complaint Department.” It was fun. I’m a troll.

I deeply apologize for doubting you Katy.

Do you know that because you are the one Wellsley was defending me against?
Again, why is this important to you? If I’m suspicious of someone, I just skip over their comments. Done. I don’t need to call anyone out because like you said I’ve been wrong before, and I really don’t need to look like a bigger ass than I already am.
January 1st, 2007 at 11:42 pmGroup hug with whipped cream? Sounds like the wasted days of my 70s youth, can I get in on it?
January 1st, 2007 at 11:45 pmJuan, did you actually notice what people said? Do you think that people can change their minds or are you like Bush?

The day I start taking myself too seriously is the day I will keel over and die.
Thanks, Juan. :)
January 1st, 2007 at 11:55 pmoh, and why hasn’t anybody figured out that the “new way forward” is East and West of Baghdad?
January 1st, 2007 at 11:59 pmSKdeA
The amount of money at stake is large enough to buy a lot of silence. I saw a bit of a corroborating article on the underlying transactions a Russian (translated – I don’t read Russian) website. It could be upwards of $70 TRILLION. Now, if an international tribunal found that the money has been misappropriated (stolen) and orders restitution…that will cause some economic upheaval the likes of which this world has not seen…it would make the Great Depression look like Happy Days.
January 2nd, 2007 at 2:18 amHow can you post TWO messages around here at the SAME time?
That has to do with TPs server. The delays are really making it difficult most days. Sometimes a post somehow gets hung up in the server for several minutes, then suddenly appears way up the thread, bumping numbers (which we occasionally use to refer to other posts). Then there are the appearing/disappearing/reappearing posts which test anyone’s sanity.
If it gets too crazy I just go to dailykos and hang out there for awhile.
January 2nd, 2007 at 2:30 amPAT:
You’re losing your marbles, you poor worm you.
And it seems to me I remember ‘Wellsley’ arguing deep into the night with himself-you remember that don’t you Zoo?
And take no comfort from BnF,he still fantasizes you are a girl-but some of us know better.
January 2nd, 2007 at 3:43 amChill everyone!
January 2nd, 2007 at 3:53 amNot only can two posters post at the same time, but unfortunately, TP does not have the ability to block posters from using each other’s screen names. So try not to worry so much about who is impersonating who!
I don’t think Troll Alert is Unbeleivable either, not the same voice. The same phrase could easily be being lifted to use to try and make PR think that it is Unby (who is a much cleverer writer BTW!).
BnF, I agree there is a lot of $ at stake,I am going to keep an eye open for more on the story. Scary stuff.

Even better, carry signs with this Obama graphic on it in front of a local theater, and pass out a flyer explaining to people approaching the theater why they should boycott ‘Music and Lyrics’ to help tell CNN/TimeWarner — IN CASH — how America won’t accept any more of their slap in the face RACIST programming.
