Fox News Segment Falsely Claims That Denver Blizzard Casts Doubt On Global Warming»

Today, prominent climate skeptics Pat Michaels and Dan Gainor appeared on Fox News’ Your World with Neil Cavuto to argue that the recent snowstorms in Denver prove there is a “Northeast bias” on global warming. Both agreed with Cavuto’s claim that if “more of those who support global warming did not live in the East Coast, or more specifically in New York, and were stationed in Denver,” they might be more skeptical of global warming.

Michaels added that “if you believe that warming causes cooling, you’re like my neighbors down in Virginia who think that if you put hot water in the ice cube tray, it freezes faster. It doesn’t work that way.” Watch it:

Screenshot

The severe blizzards in Colorado weren’t necessarily caused by global warming. But they also don’t prove that climate change isn’t happening. As the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, the frequency of extreme weather events — including snowstorms — also increases. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2001 report notes that “global average water vapour concentration and precipitation are projected to increase during the 21st century.”

Transcript:

PAT MICHAELS: Uh, Neil, if you believe that warming causes cooling, you’re like my neighbors down in Virginia who think that if you put hot water in the ice cube tray, it freezes faster. It doesn’t work that way.

And in fact, in Denver, there were very few people who, I think, tried to conflate the snowstorm with warming, they just tried to ignore the fact, that in fact it’s snowing like crazy in Denver, despite the fact that unlike in the East, where there is no warming trend in the winter temperatures, there is a warming trend in the winter temperatures in Colorado.

NEIL CAVUTO: Dan, if more of those who support global warming did not live in the East Coast, or more specifically in New York, and were stationed in Denver, they might have a different take on things?

DAN GAINOR: Oh, I think so.

They should come here to Indiana…. so far this year NO snow just rain, some warm days, and a couple morning freezes. That isnt proof of anything either, but it has never happened since I have lived here in the past 33 years. Unless things pick up I am starting to think this is going to be the year with no winter in Indiana.

Actually hot water often does freeze faster than cold water. I remember a Mr. Wizard where they did that experiment. Here’s more.

It doesn’t work in all cases, but hot tap water seems to have frozen quicker than cool tap water if I remember right.

I remember back in the 80’s when it was beginning to be clear that CFCs were contributing to ozone depletion. The right-wingers got on their hobbyhorse at the behest of the chemical industry and spread lies and disinformation about ozone depletion. Rush Limbaugh famously (and of course erroneously) claimed that volcanoes were a greater contributor to ozone depletion than CFCs.

I found myself refuting this argument a lot. The people whom I had to argue with had assumed that anything they heard on the radio was the truth. Fox’s audience is still composed of these same people.

I just googled the average temperatures for NYC and for Jan. it’s a high average of 39 and a low of 26 both Fahrenheit. This week however, the average is 55 with a high of 59 predicted for Sat. douche bags. Like my uncle Bob from Kansas used to say Only 2 type of people predict the weather, professionals and fools. I rest my case.

  11. gogreen Says:

The problem today with disinformation like this is that so much is at stake. There was an argument on a previous thread that freedom of speech ddin’t cover people who shour “fire” in a crowded theater. Does freedom of speech the cover the person who in response to the cry of fire, tells the patrons that there is no fire, before discerning whether there is a fire? If the first guy is wrong, nobody dies. If the second guy is wrong, everyone might die. I know repetition of lies is the best weapon they have, but we don’t have an anti-Fox to repeat the truth.

  14. gogreen Says:

It may well be that the a problem which the incoming Democratic congress hasn’t considered is that they need a bully pulpit from which to talk. Another problem is of course that journalists have forgotten, or been scared out of, the common sense postion of repeating lies and disinformation as an opposing viewpoint. There is an upcominmg progressive conference on media reform that should yield some interesting stuff.

But I’m serious about hating winter.

  19. ccokz Says:

Even if I have no idea who you are.

In commemorance of proud Jewish people who defended their existence I translate the following article out of German:

It seemed like a wonder when the walls fell in the upto then divided Jerusalem. Witnesses have decribed how they -astonished- ran the streets of Jerusalem on and on without hitting borders. Until then the other part -east and west- was completly strange to them. Jews and Arabs experienced the same. All of a sudden for everyone -outta a grasp- everything was open.
Jerusalems mayor Teddy Kollek -two years preceeding elected into office- was perceiving things less drunken-more sobber without neglecting the enormous chance. “When the town was reunited my first caress was: How would the people live together?”
So he commemorated in retrospective on his ninetieth birthday what was moving him back then:
The assembly of an expert committee; the idea to build a green belt around the city; his own resolution to equalize the wages of Arab workers with those of Jewish ones.

    Dry kind

It belonged to Teddys dry kind to remember big feelings in short report tone. “Childs” he used to say and to smoke a cigar brand Churchill when u wanted to know something personal about the many extraordinary incidents (moments) in his life. “Others can tell better.”

Still he was the one who didn´t experience certain things immediatly but to design them actively. He, born 1911 as Theodore Kollek in a village close to Budapest, raised in Vienna of the twenties and 1935 emigrated to Palestine with his family, wrote Israeli history with his own hand. Whether as a couraged organizer of rescue missions for Jews in Nazi-Germany - and even held talks with SS-man Adolf Eichman (oakman) to deliver 3000 concentration camp inmates to the British zone of palestine. Whether as an arms smuggler in a mission of David Ben-Gurion, his idol and sponsor in the years of Israeli state foundation.

The hagganah, the biggest Jewish underground foundation, needed reinforcements 47-48. Washington back then imposed sanctions on wary states. “Once they sent us twenty small planes packed as instant houses out of the United States. The disassembled wings were delivered seperatly,” the aged Kollek narrated when he was still spending some hours in his office at the “Jerusalem foundation.”

  20. New Yorker Says:

Well, we have not gotten any snow in NYC yet! Colorado is hogging it all.

Seriously, this is freaky. The forecast for the next week is for the temperature to be in the high 50’s here. This is the first year in aeons that NYC did not get snow in December.

    I want a blizzard! I love snow!

  21. ReadyForChange Says:

I knew someone would try to use the blizzard as some kind of argument against global warming. I had to live through this and I still know its getting warmer here in Colorado overall.

Sad thing is, most people don’t understand how global warming really works… or much else about the atmosphere, etc. So they are gullible to this kind of lie.

    Its very simple:

More heat = more precipitation globally = more blizzards, floods, etc.

But paradoxically it also means more desertification and drought during the summer months. More precipitation but only during extreme events with more moderate rainfall becoming increasingly scarce. Like the African savannas, what’s left evaporates quickly.

Yeah, every year, about the same time, the Earth seems to go through rapid cooling, then in a few months, warming again. I think the Earth is just Bi-Polar. She don’t know if shes hot or cold. Hey, I’m from the deep south and my whole life I didn’t really have to worry about winter, or at least for only a few weeks of 40 degree weather. I moved farther north, uh, to the not so deep south, and the weather SUX. Winter actually comes and then it stays, for like 4 months that seem like 6. It’s miserable. You shouldn’t have to “gear up” just to go outside. And the gloominess and greyness. It’s depressing.

  56. Xbot Says:

Michigan has been terrible this year. We have had very little snow - December 25th it was warm. WARM. YOU CANNOT JUSTIFY THAT. In my 17 years of existence, and my parents ~45 years of existence, this hasn’t happened: December 25th was always cold. I should not want to swim in my pool on December 25th. I think you can’t really come up with anything more compelling than this.

Global warming is more like a logical chain, that in denialists gets broken. Ask a denialist these questions, and have evidence ready (you can find it most anywhere):

    1. Do Greenhouse gases exist?
    2. Is carbon dioxide a greenhouse gas?
    3. If there is a large amount of greenhouse gas in Earth’s atmosphere, more than in the past 650,000 years, would this cause a changed temperature trend?
    4. Do cars, factories, and power plants release carbon dioxide?
    5. Are humans causing global warming?

The first four are solid fact. The last one is part of the logic train. Denialists will give a positive answer to the first 4. The fifth one, however, will generally be a denial. If it isn’t, expect apathy in its’ place, or some kind of excuse for not acting that they are regurgitating from FOX.

If it doesn’t accomplish the goal of awarement, it will at least make a denialist look and feel like a jackass.

  87. daGUY Says:

This is the problem with arguments on both sides of the fence - people take one single event and try to argue that it’s somehow indicative of a larger trend. If there’s a blizzard one day in Denver, that means there’s no global warming (or, for the extremists in the other direction, if it’s 70 degrees in mid-December, then that proves there IS global warming).

Well, there IS global warming, but you can’t see that from one day’s worth of weather. If anyone bothered to look at the LARGER picture, you can easily see the warming trend. The earth’s temperature was relatively consistent for the past 650,000 years, and then all of a sudden it skyrockets around the start of the Industrial Revolution. Hmm…

I’m just pointing this out because people that exclaim that any warm weather at all is due to global warming are at fault just as much as people who think a blizzard means it doesn’t exist. It DOES exist, but you need to look at the historical record to arrive at that conclusion, not one day’s worth of data.

Yep, I am 17 as of October.

I’m more of a PC gamer than a console gamer. Controlling a crosshair with a little stick drives me insane, even though I’m more of an RTS guy myself.

I don’t even have a PS2 or Xbox, and haven’t even played the former. However, the Wii is definetly the nextgen console I’d get given the choice - but my PC comes first. Both the PS3 and the 360 were horribly designed. Sony got a terrible idea by switching to Blu-Ray - cost is ultimately the decision that decides many consoles. The 360 chose to choke the market, and that doesn’t sit well in the minds of many. The Wii is a better console, it’s marketed better, and it is a homage to Nintendo fans. Though I would’ve preferred that Nintendo stick to the name Revolution, but Wii is still relatively clever.

We have the same saying here in Indiana… and yes I agree about the trend. When I was a kid I remember a blizard or two… the past 15 years has been getting the snow pushed further and further into january/febuary. Though that doesnt prove anything in the short term. Though it might in the long. After seeing that giant chart Gore had in his movie I would guess that it is not just a short term effect.

Michaels added that “if you believe that warming causes cooling, you’re like my neighbors down in Virginia who think that if you put hot water in the ice cube tray, it freezes faster. It doesn’t work that way.”

That’s the problem with that folksy kind of ‘common wisdom’, Michaels. Oh yeah, your neighbors down in Virginia are a couple of rubes. How stupid do you have to be to think something as ridiculous as that–hot water freezing faster than cold water? Sheesh.

Except they happen to be right. Ya jerk.

  95. Jim Says:

Any idiot knows that the warmer air is, the more moisture it can hold. If it’s 30 degrees instead of 20 in Denver (i.e. relatively warmer) you have the potential for much more snow. Do these idiots on Fox know what a psychrometric chart is?

A little lesson in humility: I had heard people say for years that hot water freezes faster than cold water. I thought them misguided. Then I rented a poorly insulated house, and on cold nights (>-10f) the hot water lines used to freeze up, while the cold ones didn’t. They ran parallel to the cold water lines and were of the same diameter and same (copper) material. I never would have believed it unless I saw it … multiple times.

  140. ForTruth Says:

    About the mirror question.

The reason a mirror reflects the reverse left and right but not up and down is….

The same thing as facing another person, who’s “left” is your “right”. Left and right is interchangeable, but up and down is not. Even with no mirrors around. It’s a dimension, or plane issue. Which gravity is a part of. It would be different with varying forms of gravitational pull.

Maybe it comes down to anthropology manufactured for this gravity feild. Say a different form of life was out in space, and it was round. It would look in the mirror and not see any up, down, or left or right. Its our perceptions based on the world we have adapted to live on.

    a bit of a contradiction here… it seems…

here, i found the story… from the 3rd page:

That year Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, an edict, calling for the death of British author Salmon Rushdie for blaspheming the prophet Muhammad, in his book, “The Satanic Verses.”

As Britain’s most famous Muslim, Islam was asked to comment. While he didn’t exactly echo the call for Rushdie’s death, his response was open to interpretation.

“Salmon Rushdie, or indeed any writer who abuses the prophet or indeed any prophet, under Islamic law, the sentence for that is actually death. It’s got to be seen as a deterrent, so that other people should not commit the same mistake again,” he said then.

“I was a sitting target, in a way, for anybody who wanted to make some kind of headline,” Islam told Phillips. “I certainly never supported the Fatwa, but when I was asked about … the actual principle of blasphemy and capital punishment, well, like the Bible, I said, ‘”You know, yeah, it’s there, it’s in the Koran.’ And I couldn’t deny that.”

169: Yeah. It must have been 1980 or so when I found the “Green Book” which was the translation of Ayotolah Khomenis book that was the basis for the Iranian revolution. It was a thin book about 90 pages long. I was curious about the philosophy that could bring this much power. I was shocked. The thing was filled with micromanaging minutia. No great philosophy, just a bunch of little junk. Like what hand to wipe your ass with, I am not kidding. The chapter on animal f*cking was of course the most entertaining. He just didn’t say don’t f*ck sheep, went on for pages about how not to f*ck sheep. As if he had missed a single possible iteration someone would have leapt through that loophole and nailed the sheep. But thats not all, he repeated all the same instructions for other animals. There must have been 15 pages (out of 90) on animal f*cking. And blaspheming this is worth taking a life?
Nothing short of complete denunciation of the fatwah could have saved Cat Stevens in my eyes. But, I would just boycott him. Not demand his assassination.

I have been baptised and my soul is safe. I have been thru hell and back again. If you do not believe in God or Jesus I cannot help that or force it upon you, nor do I wish too.

I support our troops and wish to hell they would accept me at my age, for I know the military ways and have worked on the KC-135s. I support and love my country.

I have never read what Salmon Rushdie wrote nor do I know about Cat Stevens philosophy or care to read about it.

Its a freaking song, thats all.
