- Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on escalation in Robert Novak’s latest column. “I’m absolutely opposed to sending any more troops to Iraq,” Hagel tells Novak. “It is folly.”
How long before the members of Congress just stuff Dubya into a sack and drag him offstage during one of his ’speeches’?
On a more serious note, what exactly does a President have to do to get impeached these days? Bubba got impeached for having an unauthorized hummer, for Chrissake.
While escalation is a good thing for cynical Democrats who love giving Republicans all the rope they want to hang themselves, the only ethical choice is to pull all the troops out ASAP. And the only way that this is going to happen is for Democrats to firmly grasp their testicles and vote to cut off funding for any military activities that do not involve evacuation of ALL troops forthwith. None of this “active military” (read: keep the bases) crap.
Hagel has been speaking out against the war for well over a year now. When Kenneth Tomlinson (who was Chairman of the Public Broadcasting Corporation at the time) hired some guy to “audit” NPR’s programs for “liberal” and “conservative” nuances, Hagel was labeled a “liberal.” Thus, I don’t think his opposition is politically motivated.
I totally agree with RealityCheck..the dems need to oppose any further funding for the Iraq war. This “emergency” supplemental that has been requested for 2007 should show the funds to be used in Iraq, vs. Afghanistan, and those for Iraq deleted. Further, funds designated for fighting the “War on Terror” should also be broken out showing specifically where and how those funds will be targeted and used. And there should be absolutely NO MORE EMERGENCY SUPPLEMENTALS. All funding for war and the military should go through the regular budget process. The “emergency” ended after the very first one for Afghanistan, in response to 911.

Republicans better hope that Chuck Hagel runs for president. After GWB’s impending sacrificial “surge”, the election will be about the war and little else. There is exactly one Republican candidate who has been on the right side of this war since the beginning, and that is Hagel, and that makes him the only electable Republican in 2008.
Chuck is prominently featured in my most recent YouTube effort “It’s the war, stupid.” and my most recent blog post of the same name.

Hagel is the only Republican with any sense or integrity–and I believe that he has indicated he will not seek another term. Figures.
