MSNBC’s Chris Matthews to be Miss America judge.

The pageant, “whose ratings had declined steadily on broadcast TV,” will air January 29.

Flashback, 6/14/06:

Chris Matthews asks the tough questions about Ann Coulter: “Do you find her physically attractive, Tucker? … Mike, do you want to weigh in here as an older fellow. Do you find her to be a physically attractive woman? … OK, Rita, do you find her to be a physically attractive woman?” Matthews’ answer to his own question: “No, I find her — I wouldn’t put her — well, she doesn’t pass the Chris Matthews test.”

If a contestant somehow resembles GW Bush arse, they are a shoe-in with Chris.

  2. TripMaster Monkey says:

she doesn’t pass the Chris Matthews test

Which part, Chris? The ‘physically attractive’ part, or the ‘woman’ part?

  3. Wayne A. Schneider says:

“No, I find her — I wouldn’t put her — well, she doesn’t pass the Chris Matthews test.”

Well, I guess we can rest assured that the new Miss America won’t have an Adam’s Apple. Thanks, Tweety.

  4. s says:

How distasteful and ridiculous. The Miss America “thing” is so condescending to women and to have fat boy being a judge……and….who is he to judge anyone in any shape or form? Sickens me as a woman. When are we ever going to get past treating women like cattle?

Sigh……. Especially Tweety………….he is such a gossiping media whore.

  5. S.D. says:

Wish he’d do that full time…

  6. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#2 Tripmaster. LOL. Good one. And a valid question, too.

It sickens me too, s. This society will probably get past treating women like cattle when we stop agreeing to act like cattle. Ugh.

  8. s says:

I agree Zooey. But girls are trained to rely on men from such a young age ( in one form or another…..even forms that look “independent”……could go into that more) that by the time the figure out the life story they’ve fallen for….it’s too late. Relationships are very much power oriented and the man woman relationship has thousands of years of domination built into it. You don’t see me nude all over the place because they won’t demean themselves…it’s about power. Stupid women think that by “giving it up” and flashing it ever where they have power. It’s the opposite…it’s a short term attention trade off. It is not power. Power is self respect which means playing your cards closer to your vest in the most positive way. It isn’t about manipulation ….on either side. blah blah blah,……….I cope with it now by saying…..ok….it’s a choice women make and until they get it…..they will be victims.

  9. RUCerious says:

And what part of this is news////>…..????

  10. JaneESchneider says:

“You don’t see me nude all over the place because they won’t demean themselves…” Sorry, s, but I assume that you meant “You don’t see MEN nude …”? Great typo! ;-D

  11. linda says:

well, considering that tweety feels compelled to comment on the appearance of the women who appear on his program, miss american might be the best place for his nitwit blatherings..

  12. s says:

Yes….;) I did mean MEN. And I guess you could throw in “me” as well!

  13. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    “Let’s play hard…” – oh, never mind.

  14. Wayne A. Schneider says:

At least Matthews won’t be asking the “big” question of the contestants (assuming they still do that): “Why do you want to be Miss America…because I see a lot of attractive…very attractive…young women, young ladies, I should say, trying for this…I don’t know, could you call it a ‘job’?…and they have no clue why they’re doing it. So what’s your story? Why do you think you could do better? Why do you think you’ll be a vastly superior Miss America than all these other contestants? Why should America regard you as their beauty queen over all the others? And you’ll have to hurry because we’re almost out of time.” [Sorry, I had to unload that from my brain.]

    # 8 Zooey,

Somewhere, somebody got the idea that “beauty” (normally found in the eye of the beholder) was something that could be contested. (Even the first beauty contest ended in a war, didn’t it? Or am I getting my story about Helen of Troy, Paris, and the apple confused?) Contests like this are a waste of time and energy, and they promote a philosophy that I believe is damaging to our nation – that thinner is better. This leads to eating disorders in young women who feel they have to lose weight or no boy will talk to them. It’s pathetic, and one good way to reduce this in the future is to stop having “beauty pageants”. Besides, can anyone even name some of the previous winners in the past few years? I know I can’t, and I don’t need to.

A woman with something to offer a man doesn’t need a beauty pageant crown to prove it. THAT’S what our young women should learn.

  15. ForTruth says:

He really does like her. He knew in today’s climate he could not admit it.

  16. ForTruth says:

    Excellent post s.

I agree. It’s demeaning to women to have this pageant. It sends the message that their best chances are through physical appearances. It’s pretty boring to watch also.

  17. Marie says:

Matthews is perfect for emcee. He drools over any pretty woman on his show – just watch him – he is better suited for that kind of show pandering to the dumbed down public than he is for a news show.

  18. tarazan says:

What is happening with MSNBC..few months ago..Tucker to dance with the stars…and now Mathews judging Miss America, Alex Witt plays in a band? I have tough question for Mathews…will Pat Bucanan be singing Opera soon?!!

  19. Zooey says:

    “Let’s play hard…” – oh, never mind.
    Comment by PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC)

    Heh.

  20. Zooey says:

I wonder what the “Chris Matthews test” is?
And why would any woman try to pass it?

  21. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I wonder what the “Chris Matthews test” is?

    Comment by Zooey

With Tweety, it’s probably, “If it walks like a woman, talks like a woman and quacks like a woman, it’s a woman. Or a duck.”

He’s very confused sometimes. He strikes me as someone who has no idea what’s going to come out of his mouth three seconds from now.

They could do the whole country a lot of good right now if they just cancel the whole damn thing. Pointless waste of time.

  22. Zooey says:

Right as usual, Wayne. About Tweety and Miss America. Both pointless wastes of time.

  23. Spence says:

I’ve seen his wife (she’s a local DC news anchor), and she isn’t much of a trade up from Coulter. Pretty classless on Chris’s part.

  24. Bluedog49 says:

I look forward to Chris Matthews being in the esteemed class of “forgotten but not gone.” This may be a great step in that direction.

  25. Zep Tepi says:

This reminds me of the movie Little Miss Sunshine where the nihilist son finally speaks after 9 months and says “F this, life is just one F’ing beauty contest after a F’ing nother”

I say we have an ugly pundit contest to see which one is really the ugliest. =)

  26. Zep Tepi says:

I vote for Rush Limbaugh as the ugliest pundit =)

  27. Zooey says:

    #26 – Zep,

I just watched “Little Miss Sunshine” last night. That’s a great movie. I laughed my ass off during Olive’s dance number.

  28. mspiggy6984@yahoo.com says:

Oh boy, this is the perfect venue for Chris. Hey Chris, just quit your day job and go on the Miss America tour. He has no taste in anything. In fact, he is quite vulgar.

He talked all through the internment of President Ford.

Chris has such a high opinion of himself. Too bad the rest of america does not share it.

  29. JIMBO says:

Hey, I don’t mind Alex Witt playing in a rock band. At least she still has that inner rocker inside of her. Tucker looks like a fool with anything he does. Chrissy Matthews has taken a new low in what’s left of professional journalism by planning to rub himself while seeing the Miss America contestants in swimsuits.

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Lewis Black, you’ve got fresh new material.

  30. Maddie says:

“plink” – that was the sound of the last tiny morsel of credibility he had left…

  31. pgl says:

The Chris Matthews test? Let’s see – Ann Coulter is about as skinny as Olive Oil whereas Chris Matthews is fatter than Wimpy. I guess to pass the Chris Matthews test, one has to eat lots and lots of hamburgers.

  32. Jennifer says:

    SHOCKING REALITY!
    SHOCKING REALITY!
    SHOCKING REALITY!

No matter how much we want to put them into a tidy little stereotype, the young women that compete in the Miss America pageant have brains, fitness, confidence, beauty and are very accomplished. They have top grades, interview skills, volunteer service, and more than a third of their score to get there was talent – usually beats the heck out of whatever you or I could do.

They are willing to step up and give it a try.

Forget the parrot sound bites about objectifying women. That is done very adequately by the icons we celebrate and no one questions; like the way women are portrayed in music videos, the Pussy Cat Dolls, the girls on Deal or No Deal, and the endless list of our culture’s true object-fests.

  33. Andrea says:

Hmmm… good point. Had not thought about it that way before. What public figures are worthy of being role models for our children? I’m sick of the sports champs and music divas.

  34. Trove111 says:

Hey! I like the babes on Deal-or-no-Deal. They are babe-a-licious!! It’s a silicone party.

  35. Retro says:

I think Bill Clinton would make a great judge!

He has done so much for the advancement of using women for recreation. His advancement of oral sex to millions was ground-breaking.

Now girls get used by their boyfriends by oral sex, not traditional sex. They have more choices.

Bill’s wandering eye would be great for the pageant, it would be a ratings-fest, plus he picks up more publicity for the new presidential run.
