Snow: Americans ‘Out of Touch With Reality’ In Iraq

Just weeks ago, President Bush insisted that the United States was “absolutely” winning in Iraq. Recently, as the casulties have mounted, he’s toned back his sunny rhetoric slightly, saying the United States was not “winning or losing.” Yet media reports indicate Bush believes the United States can win by sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq, a gambit that has been tried before and failed.

This prompted a reporter to ask White House Press Secretary Tony Snow if Bush was “fundamentally out of touch with what the reality is on the ground in Iraq?” Snow responded that “we may be out of touch with reality because we sit around and we look at fractional pictures on the screen.” Bush, on the other hand, “knows more than anybody in this room about what’s going on there.” Watch it:

Transcript:

Q The only question, though, to press a little bit, is the view that the President has been determined, he’s been resolved, and nobody questions that, but does he get it? I mean, is he fundamentally out of touch with what the reality is on the ground in Iraq?

MR. SNOW: No, I think what happens is, we may be out of touch with reality because we sit around and we look at fractional pictures on the screen. This is a President who gets exhaustive briefings on a daily basis about the situation. He knows more than anybody in this room about what’s going on there.

Sounds familiar, where have I heard the reasoning that we should trust the president, because he knows more then everyone else?

  5. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Interesting how the above post has already been deleted twice, and will no doubt be deleted again (along with this one in all probability).

But it should come as no surprise...after all, it's pretty obvious that this supposedly 'progressive' site has a rather aggressive agenda of its own, and those who don't go with the flow don't last long (until recently, I myself was a cautionary tale).

  6. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Sheesh...that didn't last long...and not even the courtesy to leave a (comment deleted by admin) message.

You TP guys should apply to help build the Presidential Library....I hear they're in need of a few good revisionists.

  7. Juan C Says:

    Trip.
A lot of posters have stopped posting here due to the deletings of their posts. Im actually doubtful of whether TP has a technical problem or is it really deleting some because they dont like them.
I think they have a technical problem...but its wishful thinking.

  8. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Good post, trueblue at number four (try deleting that!)

I have wondered at TP's fickle stewardship of this site. They want us to discuss ideas. True, we tend to trail off into side jokes and what not. I plead guilty to doing that myself from time to time. But some of the people we haven't heard from much were good, smart people whose ideas may be lost to us forever because TP drove them away. They had good posts with great links. And you're right: Who do they leave us? Trolls, some of who even admit to coming here just to disrupt things. I've considered (and tried) staying away for several days. If we're gonna lose Briseadh over this, then perhaps there are other sites we could do this on. Why go some place when the people you love aren't wanted there?

  9. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

You're right, Tripmaster. I was replying to trueblue's post (which used to be at #4) and by the time I hit "post", it was gone. Just like I will be soon if this keeps up.

  10. Jackie Says:

Tony Snow should up date his resume he'll need a job soon. When Bush sends 20,000 more troops and our soldiers start getting killed at a rate of 500 a month Bush will run for cover. Don't worry folks word is that Al Sadr has the support of the people of Iraq that's why Prime Minister Maliki wants out. His pockets have been lined with Bush money so he's ready to move and and live the rich life. Remember Maliki got some of the 900 million dollars Bremmer sold from Iraq when he caught Saddam. That money was split up by those who would follow Bush's orders. Don't worry Hastert got his share to it was brought to him in a suitcase. PBS told the story and showed the proof as they interviewed others who were living large in Paris with their pay off. Bush is setting more troops as the Iraq soldier kill more American troops.

  11. Juan C Says:

Trip. I just posted on the energy thread, commenting about NOx producing tropospheric ozone and fuel cells...and it didnt go through. I guess TP has technical problems...but its wishful thinking again.

  14. JaneESchneider Says:

Whatever he's smoking, I want some! What a bleeping bleephole! I'm sick and tired of his condescending attititude. This whole administration keeps acting like they're the adults who know everything that's best for us, and we should just go about our tiny little meaningless lives (shopping?!!) and not worry our little old heads about what the grups are up to. F*ck that noise!

  15. enaud Says:

    Yep knows more than anybody.

  16. Joe Bua Says:

Now that's just a lie. Bush has never known more than everyone or anyone in every room or any room.

Isn't this the guy who couldn't find oil in Bahrain? Traded Sammy Sosa? You know, I'm just over having respect for the office as long as he's the guy in office. After a while the guy's gotta earn it, and this guy hasn't touched anything that he hasn't broken.

And the trolls here know it, they're just too weak to admit it. Your horse has pulled up incompetant. Rip up your tickets and leave the track.

    C'mon!

  22. greggp Says:

This is the second time I have heard reference made to the President having superior information to others regarding Iraq. The President himself said so a few weeks ago, with reference to members of Congress.

So, I guess that pretty much puts the lie to the proposition that Congress saw the same intelligence as the President when the decision was made to invade.

  23. ForTruth Says:

"Failure will only come when the American People lose their will to win."

Even if true, which is not, aren't the American People in charge of the government? If we decide we don't want to win anymore, will our government listen?

  24. ForTruth Says:

Just like in Nam, the US poeple are sick of this, and it don't matter anymore how many "Tet Offenses" we launch. People are done.

  25. ForTruth Says:

    Good job Greggp,

Yes, lets bring up that point now. So the Pres knows more than anyone about Iraq, but Congress had the same info he did when they authorized the invasion. Yup, its a doozy.

  26. Marie Says:

Jeebus! Are they all on the hookah in the White House?

  27. TripMaster Monkey Says:

And with all this information, this administration has managed to be dead wrong about everything.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. We'd have better luck with trusting foreign policy decisions to a Magic 8-ball then we would with da Decider.

  28. ForTruth Says:

Is Snow the most persnickity and condescending Press Sec. ever, or what? He just talks right down to everyone.

  29. Marie Says:

This follows along with the failure of the war being the fault of the American people. I believe that was the implication of their words a couple of weeks ago.

  30. katy Says:

please don't speak for me, snowjob...

And you have 30% of people in the USA that are just like them and look up to them because, hey, they have a stupid/Psychopath/bigot/whatever just like them in the white house.

And the rest of us are thinking humans--Gods compared to these people.

Thanks for reminding me. We have to get this new Congress to do more about educating Americans. Too many of them are walking around with completely misguided and erroneous ideas in their heads. (Sadly, one of them lives at 1600 PA Ave.)

  35. ForTruth Says:

    Pete,

So when things go well, it's the GOP who saved us, and when things hit the shitter, its the Liberal's fault?

There is a delay in consequences of actions. It takes at least 2 years for most decisions to show consequences. Just in time to blame the next Democratic president.

  37. s Says:

Once again the criminals ( BushCo) are taking a phrase that has been used to describe Bush and they are turning it on their opponents....the citizens of this country. We are now "out of touch". Have we caught on yet? They seek to neutralize and own phrases, words, and ideas through turning them back on their accusers. The only problem is that they are the criminals...not us.

We know how problematic the commenting system has been lately. We've been doing everything in our power to figure out why so many comments are being eaten, but we have never, and will never, delete comments or block a commenter for any reason other than those spelled out in our terms of use (i.e., cursing, threats, etc.). Please bear with us (as you already have for some time) as we try and work through all this. We seriously value your contributions.

    - Nico

  40. Raven Says:

The downfall of America would be brought about, and it's citizens would be responsible, if we continued to allow the criminal activity of the Bush administration to drag this country into ruin.

  41. tom baker Says:

Where are all the pictures? How can I find out anything about this "progress" if there are no pictures!? I get my information from pictures, and all that I know I have learned through looking at them.

WTF!? is Tony implying there!? We (even the dumb ones) are now supposed to believe that between vacations, naps, bike rides, campaign mooching and photo-opping, that Dubbie gets a bunch of information-absorbing done, concerning information that we couldn't even find out if we wanted to, because all we do is look at pictures? These guys are letting too much of their hidden biases show. Or maybe just enough, that some of their naive and narcissistic followers will finally comprehend how loathed they are by their heroes.

  42. Bullsmith Says:

First they blamed the liberals and the Democrats, then they blamed the Iraqis, then the Generals and by extension the troops, so since that didn't work, it must be the fault of the American public in general. It's not like there's anyone else who could possibly be responsible.

  43. JaneESchneider Says:

We had nothing to do with the downfall of America, jackass...you can thank your neocon masters for that. Trapping us in an endless war, trying their best to keep the American populace in a constant state of panic, and eviscerating the Constitution have all made this nation a tired, pathetic shell of its former self. The Founding Fathers would have wept if they could see what these jackals have done to their once-great nation

At least we know now that it wasn't censorship. Thanks, Juan C, for the encouragement. And thank you, ThinkProgress, for the explanation. Now if Mr. Podesta can answer the question I posted on the end of the Bush-Cheney-gushed thread, maybe we can get this CAP philosophy on impeachment and troop-withdrawl cleared up once and for all.

Led by the conservative National Taxpayers Union, two dozen watchdog groups of all political stripes say it's time to stop making taxpayers pay the pensions of lawmakers who are convicted of or plead guilty to crimes committed while in office.

Lots of decent stories from the MSM lately.

    Now discuss...

  80. oldtree Says:

I feel better knowing that tony snow thinks I am outside reality. this gives everyone of us hope that everything is okay. we know he lies for a living, so he must be confirming that we know more than he does about reality, by comparing it directly to what the press asked him about. he slipped into the trap without knowing it. a "closer" if you will. I don't think he has caught on yet that we know that he lies about everything he says, so please don't tell him! this way it will be easier and easier to decipher what he says into what it means. the press corpse just needs to know how to ask a question to get the lie directly by having the tony "rosetta stone" snow chart of statements, mis.
if we asked the toughies, we might just figure out what (me worry) is doing at the head of our government. then someone can use the proper sedative when prescribing. another example of dumb and dumb procreating again, but being political "its", each one is simple enough to map out for the questions we need to keep them out of public office in the future.

You may well be right that the issue of posts that never show up is a server/software issue, but there is also an entirely different issue: that of posts that are deleted without trace or explanation shortly after they show up on the site. While the former may be inadvertent, the latter is most definitely intentional.

Well, ForTruth, if you're generally interested in getting a post deleted, a sure-fire method is to post a comment that calls into question in any way the government's official account of the events of 9/11. For some reason, 9/11 is a huge hot button for TP, and as I've said numerous times, discussing the state of this country without making mention of 9/11 is a bit like attempting to discuss the fate of the Titanic while avoiding any mention of icebergs.

  98. ForTruth Says:

    TripMaster,

You are correct about the 9/11 discussions and how do much of it just doesn't add up and they used thermite and...

If that was, in fact, the case, Juan C, I would agree as well. However, the facts point to a different conclusion. In , posted in August of last year. If you read the story blurb, you'll see that Judd derides the 9/11 Truth movement by claiming that there is no evidence to support their claims. If TP really didn't want to allow 9/11 truth discussion because it derails threads, you'd think they themselves would be sensible enough to avoid mentioning the subject.

BUT…any poster thinking that having their posts deleted means a personal issue is pure ego, i think.

Agreed...it's not personal at all. If you stray outside the invisible boundaries of TP's not-so-hidden agenda, you get your posts deleted. If you persist, you get banned. It's not a personal decision at all, it's just business...business as usual for ThinkProgress.

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."

The VeriChip is a glass encapsulated RFID tag that is injected into the flesh of the triceps area of the arm to uniquely number and identify individuals. The tag can be read through a person's clothing, silently and invisibly, by radio waves from a few inches away. The highly controversial device is being marketed as a way to access secure areas, link to medical records, and serve as a payment instrument when associated with a credit card.

Individual tracking and profiling. If personal identity were linked with unique RFID tag numbers, individuals could be profiled and tracked without their knowledge or consent. For example, a tag embedded in a shoe could serve as a de facto identifier for the person wearing it. Even if item-level information remains generic, identifying items people wear or carry could associate them with, for example, particular events like political rallies.

Some RFID proponents defend the technology by pointing out that the tags associated with most consumer products will contain only a serial number. However, the number can actually be used as a reference number that corresponds to information contained on one or more Internet-connected databases. This means that the data associated with that number is theoretically unlimited, and can be augmented as new information is collected.

For example, when a consumer purchases a product with an EPC-compliant RFID tag, information about the consumer who purchased it could be added to the database automatically. Additional information could be logged in the file as the consumer goes about her business: "Entered the Atlanta courthouse at 12:32 PM," "At Mobil Gas Station at 2:14 PM," etc. Such data could be accessed by anyone with access to such a database, whether authorized or not.

Welcome to the brave new world....the New World Order.

    1. US aircraft carriers are in the gulf. US enemies in the gulf region have Chinese silkworm missiles. The carriers have no defense against the silkworms.

    2. US soldiers are short on ammo because somebody blew up the green zone stockpile of ammo. What a sight that was!

    3. The area is a powder key. There are several very plausable senarios in which the green zone would be overrun.

What is George doing about this incredibly dangerous situation? Nothing. He has decided that he wants to send more soldiers to Iraq, and he spends all his time trying to think up a justification for so doing.

    excellent observation!
He knows more than anybody in this room about what’s going on there.
We have always assumed that the prez is privy to information unavailable to the rest of the rabble - hence we never believed the congress had all the info they needed before the invasion was launched. When the sh*t hit the fan in Iraq, Bush&Co tried to pawn off the responsibility for the disaster onto the congress, but of course, it was solely Bush&Co with the neocons who were/are responsible.
    Snowjob inadvertently admitted it today.

As to deletions, I never experienced any. Neither here or at C&L's or Jurassic Pork's place. However, my slightly paranoid husband, has firewalled me out of existence now and again and I wasn't able to comment then. (Some might think of this as a welcome break)

Why dont we ever hear about him? wasnt he the supposed mastermind of 911? or just a patsy... 911 was an inside job paving the way for this slaughter, and Iran is next in the sights.... BUSH, CHENEY, Rummy the Dummy, Condi, Wolfy, Hannity, Bremer, Pearle, all either need to be taken out back and shot, or sent to the Hague for trials as war criminals, and then we can cellphone record their executions..... 139. Barkley Says:

Most interesting thing about Bush's new catchphrase, er.. i mean plan "Surge and Accelerate" is that he is going to posit that it is the will of the American people. The people's impatience with the "progress" has left him with no other choice but to open the throttle and put greater force behind the existing "direction" in order to accelerate the time it will take to "succeed".

Every Republican, Democrat, foreign policy advisor, past President and voter has spoken and our President has heard us in the inverse.

No one in charge back in the US with any common sense nor heart for the dying soldiers and the mouning family members with a no win situation, this evil man in the White House who wants to send more young men there to die? The real reason for Iraq, 911 and Iran (coming soon), the North American Union, Amnesty for illegals, Patriot Act, Victory Act, NAFTA, digital voting with no papertrail, 750 general orders to override the US constitution, etc: The Globalists want a one-world government.

  148. bubba Says:

I am amazed at how the people posting here have more information available to them than the US Government...why don't you stop hiding/hording the info, and forward it to your congressmen...

...you know, the info on how things REALLY are in IRAQ...the info on the vast conspiracies to control the US...all the info on how Bush is the cause of everything bad...

...send all that info to the now Democrat controlled congress, and they should be able to fix it all in 100 hours.

...if you don't trust your congressmen, then send it to your favorite liberal Supreme Court Justice...they will immediately fix the problem...

...no? Send it to France...they hate Bush...they will fix the problem...and CC a copy to the UN so they also can fix the problem.

You don't understand that the terrorists are determined to either convert the entire world to islam, in which case they win, or to kill themselves and everyone in their path while trying, in which case they also win (in their minds).

Please, move to france now and throw your lots in with those who are prone to appeasement and surrender. Leave America to those of us who are proud of our country's ideals, proud of the contributions we make to the rest of world, and proud to be a shining example for all of humanity. If the link above has been deleted...please search on google video for "The Power of Nightmares". It was a BBC special on the real history of what has happened. Only a few, in our great country, still believe the lies. I ask everyone to look for the PROOF! Stop listening to what you are told and get up off your butts and look at the history and PROOF! If Bush told all of us that we would be safe by jumping off a bridge...would you jump? I myself would look at what I was facing, before jumping. I chose to have my own mind. If there is something he is not telling us... All I can ponder is why that info has lead him to fail for so many years? Why has he and his "group of friends", changed the story so many times? Why does he not Properly investigate FACTS. Why is it always a closed panel of select personnel that he has chosen, that gets to look at all the clues? Why not involve the entire Congress? Why so secret? Secrecy of this EPIC proportion in the US can only hide the real truth, that the people of this country should see as well! Why is it always "His way or nothing"?

I can go on all night with the questions. Yet he, nor his friends, have provided any....I repeat, ANY real, factual, scientific evidence! Nor have they listened to the hundreds of actual REAL people fighting this war. Just as well, ignoring the masses in the US. I have many friends in this war! I am Patriotic! I love my country...Well, what it used to be. What it should be! Not what it is becoming with this new wave of imaginations gone wild. Using Fear and Scare mongering to line the cattle of America up for what can only lead to tyranny at home!

I ask you to look for the news clips of the past. I beg you to compare what they have told us time and time again. I challenge you to show some real proof. I challenge you to find 2 topics they haven't flip-flopped on concerning the war. I challenge you to research the "Terrorists" they have captured. Most of them are fee today, do to lack of having any involvement with terror! Where is the proof? Show it to all of us and end the questioning!

That's a nice apology piece for the savages that attacked and killed your fellow Americans on 9/11. It wants to convince us that there is no cohesive unit called al qaeda, with bin laden at the head, yet it continually points out how he recruits, funds and trains anyone that will listed on how to kill Americans. It even goes so far as to suggest that we brought the attack on ourselves by attempting to bring bin laden and the other terrorists involved in bombing our embassies in Africa to justice. How dare we fight back or hold people accountable for their crimes?!?!

As is typical with your ilk, you're quick to point out what you deem as the shortcomings or failures of our leaders, yet you offer NOTHING in the way of a solution. Please, please, tell us all what you would have done different and how you would stopped 9/11 from happening. Or better yet, what you suggest we do to stop the NEXT 9/11?????????
