The 110th Congress has officially elected Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as Speaker of the House, making her the first woman in U.S. history to hold the position.
The most direct and profound way to restore dignity and respect for the American people in the eyes of the international community would be to impeach George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the other key members of his criminal gang. Changing Bush’s policy of resisting the ICC and joining forces with the global effort to establish an international rule of law, we can then try Bush and his regime for war crimes in the International Criminal Court. To do anything less is criminal.
Congratz to Nancy Pelosi!!! I truly hope she does well for this country. I look forward to the 100 hour blitz to change government for the better. I am happy that within 100 hours the Dems will officially close and secure our borders against illegals, increase our minimum wage, outlaw the death penalty, and bring all our troops home. Seems like alot, but Nancy and the rest campaigned on these issues almost exclusively. It would just be puzzling if they didn’t accomplish there main issue’s first. 3 cheers for the new Speaker!!!!
This is a very good start. She’s strong. She’s the right person in the right moment in history. She’s going to continue to make history as a strong, effective leader.
The initiative has officially been passed from Bush to the House and Senate.
Now Bush and the neocon media get to play defense, which they do best, because they are ruthless attack dogs that have not a clue what creative and selfless leadership is.
Advise to Pelosi and the Democrats: Ignore the criticism. If the Republicans and mass media have good things to say about you, you’re obviously not doing your job. You don’t want or need the support of trolls.
Maximize participation of those who are constructive in any party and minimize the influence of those whose record demonstrates that they are merely interested in maintaining the status quo. They had their chance and they blew it big time. The country made it clear it doesn’t want them to have another chance to continue the destruction of the country.
Force the president to go on record vetoing legislation the majority of the country wants, based on many polls. Such vetos will only help build his legacy as the most reviled president in history and further drive a wedge between the president and his party.
We are in the midst of the biggest shift in party affiliation in this country in our lifetimes. People are finally waking up.
Thanks. However, it seems roger_roger has his undershorts in a wedgie over this. Maybe jason, IRI and roger2 can go out tonight and cry in their beers together.

So, Nov 7 was NOT about Iraq.
I do wish the new speaker luck and hope for wisdom.
It really didn’t hit me until today that this is an historical occasion; the first woman speaker of the house.
In some ways it is regrettable that women have not risen to such level in the past, but it happened today and that makes this a day to remember.
The future remains to be seen, but at this point, it is difficult for me to think that this will be anything but a marked improvement for the country.
What were the many things that the Republicans considered more important in their tenure?
Terri Schiavo!
Stopping gays from getting “married”!
Giving big-business tax breaks they denied the middle-class!
Lowering taxes while raising spending to bring us the largest deficit in history!
The previous Republican majority couldn’t even get off their lazy behinds and pass the spending bills due months ago!
Yep, it’s official. The Republicans have put America on track towards destruction. With luck, the Democrats can turn the drive towards national destruction around and save this country from our previous failed leadership.
Why should anyone who believes the laws of the Unites States should be equally applied to all, be happy that Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House?

Is it not the job of the Speaker of the House to bring forward impeachment hearings when a president breaks the law?
So when she says the idea of impeachment is off the table, after the president admits to breaking the law, does that not make her unfit for the job?

The point is: If Iraq was the big issue that got the Dems elected, then why is Iraq not the FIRST issue on the plate? Is there not at least one person a day on this very site stateing that Iraq was the reason for the change in power? Which is more important, $1/hour more for 4% of the nation or the lives of the troops over in Iraq?
It looks like the new Congress have answered that one already.
Iraq was the battle cry, politics as usual is the order of the day.
I truly hope your right. If this big 100 hour thing isn’t mostly about Iraq and Securing out Borders, you all should ask the Dems to resign. They campaigned on these issues and they proclaimed they were of the utmost importance. If they put petty nominal issues ahead of major issues that involve life and death, they should quit and you all should be asking them to quit. If you think this war is wrong, then discussing minimum wage while Americans are dying in a war that we shouldn’t be in is near criminal. I trust however that within the next 100 hours, the new Dem congress will pass a resolution demanding we bring the troops home ASAP. I mean, they campaigned on it afterall.
#47 – Roger_Roger, I see where you’re coming from.
I can only assume that the Dems have decided to clean up the mess that the Reps left behind (ignored spending bills) and hit a few issues they were elected on (ethics reforms, minimum wage, breaking the chains with lobbyists) first off while they’ve got a wave going.
Once this is done, they’ll concentrate on how to address the problems in Iraq and the “war on terra”. I’m sure we can all agree that this has reached the status of biggest mess of the US. It’s not something that can be shoved down the throats of the Dems or Reps without there being some deliberation. (Something the Reps denied the Dems when they were majority party.)
I remember the Republican Contract on America, and the items they’ve decided to renege on because they got drunk on power. I’m just praying that the Dems don’t replay history and do it themselves. Yes, the 100 hour agenda is agressive, and yes the Reps are being closed out for this first major push of items that can be done quickly.
So far, the war in Iraq has lasted longer than WW-II. It’s not something that will be cleaned up over night.
We see eye to eye, but reforming how lobbying works, changing minimum wage, and ethics reforms are certainly not even close to as important as Iraq. Furthermore, they weren’t primarily elected based on minimum wage and lobby reform. They were elected because of Iraq. For them to shun and push off saving American lives is very cold and semi evil if you believe the war is illegal like the Dems have said.
Saying a war is wrong that Americans are dying in and then turn around and work on Lobby Reform first should make ever Dem and eveyone that voted for them extremely mad.
RR – I heard that corruption turned out to be the main voter issue. Hence, all these rule changes?
from cnn:
‘Incoming House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, told reporters that Democrats would move quickly on rules changes.
“On Thursday and Friday, we’re going to adopt rules that will change the way the people’s House operates to ensure its integrity, to ensure its openness and to ensure its transparency,” Hoyer said Wednesday.’
and:
“First on agenda: Tighter restrictions on earmarks, lobbying, gifts and travel”
Its like seeing your house burning down with your children inside and deciding you need to mow the grass first before you address your burning down house.
Hastert’s last job was to hand over the gavel to the new Speaker. Fatty couldn’t even do that job right, like many of the other ones he was supposed to do while Speaker.
He made Boehner do it.
Roger since your fax machine obviously works, let me have the number – I have a few talking points I’d like you to repeat for us.
Now not being American, US government is a mystery to me – but isn’t the president and not the speaker C-In-C of the armed forces…? Just how does Nancy Pelosi stop the war?
Saying a war is wrong that Americans are dying in and then turn around and work on Lobby Reform first should make ever Dem and eveyone that voted for them extremely mad.

Pelosi can stop the war very easily. She simply has a vote to eliminate all spending on Iraq. With no money, the war is over overnight. Clean and simple!
“Just how does Nancy Pelosi stop the war?” – Comment by TerrytheTurtle — January 4, 2007 @ 4:47 pm
Ideally, by passing legislation that states the Budget for Defense cannot be spent on extending the occupation of Iraq. It’s how it was done for Vietnam! (Guess what. Communism did NOT take over the world because we left Vietnam!)
The down-side is that Pres. Bush will most likely issue a signing statement that he can spend any amount of money he wants on any project and not be held accountable by anyone. Funny, the Reps in power didn’t mind him doing that for the past six years. Why would they complain about a run-away Rep Presidency now?
Actually, the best way that Speaker Pelosi can address the issue is say “We have legislation that will remove us from Iraq. Pres. Bush can go along with this legislation, or we can start impeachment hearings on his lies about iraq. So, Mr. President which one will it be? Leave iraq, or start impeachment and stop all federal funding for our military?”
Yeah, it’ll make her reviled by everyone, but it’ll put Pres. Bush on alert that he’s got to be held accouuntable for something in his life.
re-post: did anyone, particularly you rrooggeerr, even hear pelosi’s speech today?
in part:
“The election of 2006 was a call to change — not merely to change the control of Congress, but for a new direction for our country. Nowhere were the American people more clear about the need for a new direction than in the war in Iraq.
“The American people rejected an open-ended obligation to a war without end. Shortly, President Bush will address the nation on the subject of Iraq. It is the responsibility of the president to articulate a new plan for Iraq that makes it clear to the Iraqis that they must defend their own streets and their own security, a plan that promotes stability in the region, and a plan that allows us to responsibly redeploy our troops.
“Let us work together to be the Congress that rebuilds our military to meet the national security challenges of the 21st century.
“Let us be the Congress that strongly honors our responsibility to protect the American people from terrorism.
“Let us be the Congress that never forgets our commitment to our veterans and our first responders, always honoring them as the heroes that they are.
she talked about the FIRST 100 HOURS before the election… these are things that have been needlessly put off for years by the repugs…
she has not and will not forget about iraq…
…
America is REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY, REDDY for a woman House Speaker.
Nancy, “You go girl. You go girl.” This Nancy is going to be a lot different than one Nancy that lived in Washington D. C. Nancy Reagan, we don’t care about your White House dishes.
Yeah, this particular Nancy is going to focus on dishes all right. SHE’S GOING TO “DISH” IT OUT TO THE GOP. Eat that! Eat that! Eat that!
Helen Reddy’s wonderful song ‘I Am Woman’ still resonates across our country.
REVISED lyrics of ‘I Am Woman’
I am woman hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back and pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the HOUSE FLOOR
No one’s ever going to keep me down again ( REPUBLICANS ARE LOSERS. )
Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom BORN of pain
Yes we’ve paid the price ( TOO MANY ABORTIONS IN AN ALLEY )
But look how much I gained
If I have to, CINDY SHEEHAN AND ALL OF US CAN DO ANYTHING
We are strong
We are invincible…………
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across this land
But I’m still an embryo ( WE’RE GOING TO PASS EMBYONIC STEM-CELL LEGISLATION )
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
If I have to I can face anything ( EVEN THE NIGHTMARE OF GEORGE W. BUSH )
To our resident trolls:
The Dems were SWORN in today! And before they can change their shoes, you are demanding that they end the war. Where the hell were you when Bush was starting the fiasco? You were cheerleading him, that’s what you were doing. Now you feel foolish and you are embarrassed, and you want to make fools of the Democrats because you, yourself, are the fool, along with George W.
The Dems WILL disable malicious Republican plans, they WILL advocate for the middle class and they WILL work to end the disaster of Iraq.
They can cut funding – but you know Bush can take money from elsewhere, and you will be the first one to say the Dems are pulling the rug out from under the troops already there.
They can demand troops be pulled out – but you know that Bush is the C-in-C and only he can make commands like that, as the generals are subordinate to him.
You forgot that the Democrats announced their plan for Iraq in October, it’s along the lines of the Murtha plan, but you won’t even give Murtha a chanco to implement it before you jump all over him.
R2-Hey dense one, The head of the RNC and all the rethug talking heads all stated the election turned on Republican corruption and Iraq was #2. Therefore the Dem’s have attacked the #1 problem first. You seem to get your talking points confused.Your arguments are rank silly-how old are you ? 12 ?
“The election of 2006 was a call to change — not merely to change the control of Congress, but for a new direction for our country. Nowhere were the American people more clear about the need for a new direction than in the war in Iraq.
Yet, Iraq is not the #1 prioity. The big change is politicsas usual.
is the responsibility of the president to articulate a new plan for Iraq that makes it clear to the Iraqis that they must defend their own streets and their own security, a plan that promotes stability in the region, and a plan that allows us to responsibly redeploy our troops.
And every day people tell us that stability in Iraq is not possible.
“Let us work together to be the Congress that rebuilds our military to meet the national security challenges of the 21st century.
Last time I heard this was when Bill Clinton was in office. No new gear (equipment) for years. We were still using Viet Nam era stuff when we went into Afghanistan and Iraq.

Actually, if I recall something I read correctly, it’s the Minority Leader’s role to hand the gavel over to the incoming Speaker. If you’ll remember back in Jan ‘95 when Newt took over as Speaker, it was Dick Gephardt who handed the gavel to him (and not because Tom Foley wasn’t there; they said this was the tradition.) So it was Boehner’s role to hand the gavel to Speaker Pelosi.
Oops, I missed katy volunteering for the roadtrip.

please don’t be so dense…
Comment by katy
The point is: If Iraq was the big issue that got the Dems elected, then why is Iraq not the FIRST issue on the plate? Is there not at least one person a day on this very site stateing that Iraq was the reason for the change in power? Which is more important, $1/hour more for 4% of the nation or the lives of the troops over in Iraq?
It looks like the new Congress have answered that one already.
Iraq was the battle cry, politics as usual is the order of the day.
January 4th, 2007 at 3:36 pm#53

I call SHOTGUN!
January 4th, 2007 at 3:45 pm#47 – Roger_Roger, I see where you’re coming from.
January 4th, 2007 at 3:49 pm#58,
We see eye to eye, but reforming how lobbying works, changing minimum wage, and ethics reforms are certainly not even close to as important as Iraq.
January 4th, 2007 at 3:54 pmRR – I heard that corruption turned out to be the main voter issue.

January 4th, 2007 at 4:54 pm“Just how does Nancy Pelosi stop the war?” – Comment by TerrytheTurtle — January 4, 2007 @ 4:47 pm

January 4th, 2007 at 5:09 pmre-post: did anyone, particularly you rrooggeerr, even hear pelosi’s speech today?

Nancy, “You go girl. You go girl.” This Nancy is going to be a lot different than one Nancy that lived in Washington D. C. Nancy Reagan, we don’t care about your White House dishes.
Yeah, this particular Nancy is going to focus on dishes all right. SHE’S GOING TO “DISH” IT OUT TO THE GOP. Eat that! Eat that! Eat that!
Helen Reddy’s wonderful song ‘I Am Woman’ still resonates across our country.
REVISED lyrics of ‘I Am Woman’
I am woman hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back and pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the HOUSE FLOOR
No one’s ever going to keep me down again ( REPUBLICANS ARE LOSERS. )
Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom BORN of pain
Yes we’ve paid the price ( TOO MANY ABORTIONS IN AN ALLEY )
But look how much I gained
If I have to, CINDY SHEEHAN AND ALL OF US CAN DO ANYTHING
We are strong
We are invincible…………
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across this land
But I’m still an embryo ( WE’RE GOING TO PASS EMBYONIC STEM-CELL LEGISLATION )
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
If I have to I can face anything ( EVEN THE NIGHTMARE OF GEORGE W. BUSH )

January 4th, 2007 at 5:41 pmTo our resident trolls:
January 4th, 2007 at 5:43 pmThe Dems were SWORN in today!
Not R2’s strength, that listening thing. Much less the comprehension part of it.

is the responsibility of the president to articulate a new plan for Iraq that makes it clear to the Iraqis that they must defend their own streets and their own security, a plan that promotes stability in the region, and a plan that allows us to responsibly redeploy our troops.
