Last night, Bill O’Reilly opened a discussion about new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) by pointing out that “a lot of conservatives are already hammering Ms. Pelosi.” O’Reilly said, “I don’t think that’s fair. … I don’t think it’s fair just to go in with a hammer on Nancy Pelosi. Let’s see what she’s got, what they’ll do.”
Moments later, during the same segment, O’Reilly attacked Pelosi as “the most liberal woman in the world.” Watch both comments back-to-back:
O’Reilly has previously (and falsely) bragged about coining the term “San Francisco Values,” which he apparently first used “during the October 2 broadcast of Westwood One’s The Radio Factor, when he called Pelosi a ‘far-left secular-progressive bomb thrower‘ and warned that ‘[i]f you vote for the Democrats and if they get a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate,’ then ‘you bring to America San Francisco values.’”
Full transcript:
O’REILLY: Alright, you know, a lot of conservatives are already hammering Ms. Pelosi. I don’t think that’s fair. I obviously don’t — you know, she and I don’t get along real well. If you read Culture Warrior, you’ll get a good laugh out of a —
MORRIS: Oh, thanks for the Culture Warrior mug you sent me, Bill.
O’REILLY: It’s okay. But I don’t think it’s fair just to go in with a hammer on Nancy Pelosi. Let’s see what she’s got, what they’ll do.
+++++
MORRIS: You’re going to see the Howard Dean element of the Democratic Party increasingly breaking away from the Pelosi mainstream of the Party.
O’REILLY: Well, Pelosi is about the most liberal woman in the world. You would think that she would embrace the Howard Dean tactics, but she doesn’t seem to be doing that.
Watched some of this drivel. They attacked her for not having anything about Iraq for the first 100 hours. Didn’t bother to listen to her speech and now look particularly foolish after the letter to the President.
January 5th, 2007 at 2:29 pm‘you bring to America San Francisco values.’
Does this mean we’ll all have to do acid, wear outrageous clothes, listen to the Dead and the Airplane and the Quicksilver Messenger Service, and love one another? Groovy, man.

January 5th, 2007 at 2:35 pmI think this post misses the main point of this whole segment.
And that point is Toesucker Morris’s pleasure in receiving Orally’s fabulous “Culture Warrior” mug.

January 5th, 2007 at 3:25 pmSo when did Dems finally realize that calling someone a Liberal is an insult. I am glad you guys and gals are realizing how horrible Liberal values are for America. I mean, you must or you wouldnt think that someone calling you a liberal is an insult.
January 5th, 2007 at 3:36 pmSo what if Pelosi is the most liberal woman in the world? Voters knew what they were getting when the voted for her and the Democrats. O’Lielly insults Americans when he tries to claim that voters don’t want what they voted for.
Why does O’Lielly hate America and our voting system?
January 5th, 2007 at 3:41 pmRogerx2,
Insults are a matter of perception. If you call me a liberal, I am not insulted.
We already see where conservative values have gotten this country — your kind of place. Comfy?
January 5th, 2007 at 3:43 pmIn 17th & 18th century London, the nobility found it entertaining to travel to Bedlam and watch the lunatics. Guess things haven’t changed so much, we just pay the lunatics these days.
January 5th, 2007 at 3:47 pmRoger_Roger,
Well, if you hate liberal values so much then you probably hate the fact that your water is clean, your air is breathable, we have a public education system (that does need some work, I gather, based on your comments), and a forty-hour work week with opportunities for overtime for most people. It was because of Liberals that we have those things. It was conservatives who fought against every one of them.
If you hate liberals so much, then please find another site that makes you happy. That way we all win.
Still proud to be a conservative, Roger?
Because I AM DAMN PROUD TO BE A LIBERAL!
January 5th, 2007 at 3:47 pmSo when did Dems finally realize that calling someone a Liberal is an insult. I am glad you guys and gals are realizing how horrible Liberal values are for America. I mean, you must or you wouldnt think that someone calling you a liberal is an insult.

I think you, and Bore, are confusing liberal (liberty or freedom) with libertine.
January 5th, 2007 at 3:48 pmYes Roger how do you quantify the name conservative when the conservatives (in office) have been anything but fiscally, or morally, conservative?
They have indebted America up to it’s eyeballs for what, exactly?
January 5th, 2007 at 3:51 pmI do not consider being called a liberal an insult. That is a republican game started by George Bush Sr. by calling liberal the “L word,” as if anyone saying the word “liberal” was using the “F word.”
The Bushes are the biggest f*ckups the world has ever seen. The word “republican” and especially what it means is the word that everyone is sick of.
January 5th, 2007 at 3:54 pmDid anyone else besides Wayne and I see Joe Scarborough respond to BillO’s statement that “everyone working at NBC is liberal”? Man, was Scarborough pissed! He tore BillO a new one, and challenged him to a debate “anytime, anywhere”! It was truly amazing. We actually applauded when he was done.

Calling someone ‘liberal’ isn’t an insult, no matter how much you and Bill-O curl your lips when you utter the hated word.
Well, you got that right! Just look at the mess this country’s in! If we only had someone conservative, or even neo-conservative at the helm all this time, think how well off we’d be!
Oh…wait a minute…
January 5th, 2007 at 3:55 pmAccording to wikipedia Oreilly;
O’Reilly was born in “liberal”New York City, to Irish Catholic parents William and Angela O’Reilly. In 1995, O’Reilly was replaced by former NBC News and CBS News anchor Deborah Norville on Inside Edition. He then enrolled at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Upon leaving Harvard.
Now we see that Oreilly attended the “Liberal” John Kennedy school of government at Liberal Harvard Univeristy =)
January 5th, 2007 at 3:59 pmTripmaster,
TP obviously agrees with me on this or they would be wasting time posting a nonstory. This headline is basically TP calling out O’Reilly for saying we should give Pelosi a chance but then “insulting” her by calling her a liberal. If calling someone a liberal isn’t an insult, then O’Reilly hasn’t insulted her and TP doesn’t have a story. So, is Liberal an insult and this is a story or isn’t it and TP is wasting our time?
January 5th, 2007 at 4:00 pmHow can TP say it is an “attack” to call someone a liberal unless they to believe that the liberal mindset is wrong?
January 5th, 2007 at 4:01 pmActually I think ‘Liberal’ falafel Oreilly is not criticising Pelosi, but letting her know how much he likes “liberals”, being a ‘liberal’ himself. =)

Apparently, you didn’t actually read my earlier post. I’ll repost the relevant passage for your convenience:
I’ll readily concede that Bill-O meant liberal as an insult, given his past fascination with all those to the left of him (read: everyone except Dick Cheney), but just because someone attempts to insult you doesn’t mean that you are necessarily insulted.

January 5th, 2007 at 4:14 pmJohn Kennedy was Irish Catholic, right Roger?
So if Kennedy was a Catholic, then why Oreilly must be Catholic, and Liberal, and if Catholics are religious then they must believe in God, and are therefore Conservative, yes? And if Oreilly is an independent then he can still be considered a conservative, since he believes in God, as I do, can he, even though he says he’s not. although he has worked for that darn liberal media.
And if Catholics believe in God, then they, Liberals, are not Godless are they?

If someone called you a neocon, MA, you’d probably be flattered, despite the fact that that would be a deadly insult to anyone with a conscience.
As I just finished explaining to your playmate Roger_Roger, because someone attempts to insult you doesn’t necessarily mean you are insulted.

January 5th, 2007 at 4:36 pmI love the irony inherent in the term “San Francisco values”. San Francisco’s values include compassion, diversity tolerance and acceptance of people as they are. Bill O’Reilly and a majority of the Republicans values include hate, intolerance, mean-spiritedness and divisiveness. The right wing prides themselves for supposedly being Christians. The irony is that if Jesus were alive today, which of these two sets of values do you think he would choose?

January 5th, 2007 at 4:38 pmBefore I go home, let me explain this: TP is NOT putting this story up because Bill O called Nancy Pelosi a Liberal. The story is about his hypocrisy in saying in one breath “It’s not fair to go after her with a hammer right away, give her a chance”, and in the next breath using his worst (to him) “insult”, that she’s “the most liberal woman in the world” (which is NOT true but also NOT the point.) The point is the hypocrisy, okay?

Forget the “liberal” insult. O’Reilly says here he doesn’t thing it fair that a lot of conservatives are “hammering” Speaker Pelosi, then makes a suggestion that he has done so in his book. I haven’t read it (and won’t) but I’ll bet he did a lot of hammering there. My take is that O’Reilly is so full of himself that he wants everyone else to leave the anti-Pelosi commentary to him (and to buy his book).

January 5th, 2007 at 4:52 pm#62, I hope your not talking about the “surplus” Clinton had. Even the year Clinton reported a surplus of $559 billion, the true number was a $484 billion deficit. Standard accounting rules require them to report all expenses including those from entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicaid. Adding those costs would make federal accounting similar to that used by corporations, state and local governments and large non-profit entities such as universities and charities. It would show the government recording enormous losses because the deficit would reflect the growing shortfalls in Social Security and Medicare. The government would have reported nearly $40 trillion in losses since 1997 if Social Security and Medicare had been included.

If we took every single penny that the entire US economy made for 1 year, we couldn’t pay our debt. This is beyond the definition of bankrupt. These entitlement programs have already brought us to bankrupcy and now I hear talk that we need Unversal Health Care. We currently would need to add roughly $6,700 in taxes to every single American Family to just cover Social Secuirty and Medicare. Add another 4k-6k per year for a Universal Health plan. Are you prepared to ask each and every American family to pony up $6,700 more per year on top of what they pay now?

Actually Zep,
Social Security alone adds more debt in 1 year then the entire cost of the Iraq and Afgan wars combined. It is amazing actually that more Americans don’t realize how bad these horrible programs are costing us. If you care about what we spent in Iraq for the last 5+ years, then you must be pissed that we put more debt on the books in 1 year from Social Secuirty then the entire cost of the Iraq War.

I vote that we make the corporations pay more in taxes, lose some of their sweetheart tax breaks for doing nothing, and make some of the ultra-wealthy go back to paying their fair share in taxes for all of their unearned income. That would go a long way toward paying for it.
Plus, we could allow the government to negotiate with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare. Remember, it’s not that these drugs cost so much; it’s that these unconscionable companies charge so much. That’s one way to make it more affordable.

BZZZZT! Nice try. Throwing your Fearless Leader under the bus to save your fallacious argument was a nice touch, but the correct answer is that we did have a surplus before Chimpy got his mitts on it. I’d explain in more detail, but thankfully, post #93 sums it up quite admirably.
No, it’s not. I’ve done quite a bit of research into the subject, and while it is appalling, I’m quite aware of just how appalling it is. Please don’t assume I’m ignorant of the issues, especially right after you prove yourself to be.
Here’s a wacky idea…the war in Iraq, to date, has cost us roughly $355,950,000,000.00. That’s probably enough to get us started.
Also, you might consider hitting up Rummy for the 2.3 trillion dollars that was mysteriously ‘lost’ on September 10, 2001. That’s $8,000 for every man, woman, and child in the U.S.A….more than enough to cover that $6,700 figure you’re carping about.

Social Security collects money from working Americans (income) and provides money to retired Americans (expense). Sometimes the income is less than the expense and small adjustments fix the deficit.
The Iraq and Afgan wars spend billions (expense). No money coming in, no income. All debt.
You show your confusion again.
January 5th, 2007 at 5:21 pmI see that Satan is using TP to prevent me from voicing my opinion, but that’s alright. January 5th, 2007 at 5:27 pmCorrection: “No money coming in, no income. All deficit.” The debt comes from the fact that we are borrowing the money to finance the war.

January 5th, 2007 at 5:30 pm#106 I agree again!! Subsidizing corporations is wrong and we shouldn’t do it. I also believe we shouldn’t subsidize American retirements. Especially since it is bankrupting us. To those that go with the “we are fine” mantra. Nice try, but using true accounting principles proves you very very wrong. Clintons “surplus” was only a surplus if you use accounting rules that are illegal for everyone else in America. Using standard accounting proves his surplus an actual deficit of an amazing size. Bush is even worse (Much worse then is published). My point is that out politicians are (or have) run us into bankruptcy by never addressing the failed programs like Social Security and Medicare. Hell, bush added the prescription drug plan in 2004. Standard accounting would have tallied a whoppinh $8 trillion deficit just for that programs alone in 2004. By the way, that is roughly the size of all our profits for the entire American Economy for 1 year. My point is, this programs don’t even exist in reality anymore. It isn’t a slight tax increase that would “fix” them. We would have to take every single penny of profit from the entire American economy just to pay for these failed programs.
January 5th, 2007 at 5:30 pmGunmen force Guard troops to flee post near border
Associated Press
Jan. 5, 2007 05:57 AM
TUCSON – National Guard troops working at an observatory post near the Mexican border were forced to flee after being approached by a group of armed individuals, authorities said.
The event occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday at one of the National Guard entrance identification team posts near Sasabe, said National Guard Sgt. Edward Balaban.
He said the troops withdrew safely, no shots were fired and no one suffered injuries.
U.S. Border Patrol officials are investigating the incident and trying to determine who the armed people were, what they were doing and why they approached the post before retreating to Mexico.
The incident occurred in the west desert corridor between Nogales and Lukeville in the vicinity of Sasabe, Balaban said.
“We don’t know exactly how many because obviously it took place in the dark,” Balaban said. “Nobody was able to get an accurate count.”

January 5th, 2007 at 5:39 pm#124 Immigrants don’t scare me but these drug dealers coming from mexico with machine guns do. Why didn’t our Guardmen kill these terrorists when they entered America illegally and threathened American Soldiers?
January 5th, 2007 at 5:41 pmNo, I am not suggesting that you are lying. I just want to know how you heard about this “breaking news” that you felt was so important to this thread that you had to annouce it in all caps. But katy was kind enough to provide a source (from a newspaper, no less) that shows this wasn’t the major incident it seemed like you wanted to make it out to be.
If you’re going to break into a thread with an unrelated subject, it helps people if they knew what your source was. That’s all. BTW, “It is all over TV take your pick.” did not adequately answer my question when I asked what your source was. You know, we have had trolls try to break into a thread with a thoroughly incorrect interpretation of some news, and that’s why I asked you for your source (which is usually understood to be a request for a specific one, not just a general one like “TV”.)
I never said you were lying. Your own suspicious mind came up with that one.

Er… of course nobody is watching who is who. They sneak across the border or overstay their visas.
If someone were watching, these people would have a proper passport with the proper stamp on it, and wouldn’t be called illegal aliens. Duh.
And terrorists don’t look like anything in particular. If you had Mohammed Atta, Tim McVeigh, Shoko Asahara, and Ted Kazsynski (sp?) in a line-up, you’d be wrong to pick only Atta as the terrorist. Again, duh.

Consider what the president is saying with his amnesty. He is telling us that he cannot or will not do his constitutional duty to defend the states from invasion.
