Lawmakers Speak Out Against Bush Escalation Plan

mccain_lieberman.jpg“President Bush is expected to announce his new Iraq strategy in an address to the nation” Wednesday at 9 pm EST. And according to the BBC, “The speech will reveal a plan to send more US troops to Iraq.”

Over the past few weeks, the media has asked members of Congress whether they support or oppose escalation.

Many are strongly opposed:

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE): “It’s Alice in Wonderland. … I’m absolutely opposed to sending any more troops to Iraq. It is folly.” [Robert Novak column, 1/2/07]

Some are not saying where they fall either way:

Sen. John Ensign (R-NV): “Other lawmakers contacted Thursday, including Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., did not express immediate objection to a troop increase, but emphasized they did not want to prejudge the president’s strategy.” [CongressDaily, 1/5/07]

Others have given their full support to the move:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT): “After speaking with our military commanders on the ground, I strongly believe that additional U.S. troops must be deployed to Baghdad.” [Hartford Courant, 12/21/06]

According to a tally by Think Progress, only seven lawmakers have given their public support to Bush’s escalation plan, twenty-three have come out in opposition, and fifteen have said they will withhold judgement for now.

Think Progress will be keeping tabs on who is willing to go along with Bush’s misguided plan and who is speaking out against it here. Help us keep it updated by leaving more examples in the comments. (Or send us an email).

They spoke out individually, when asked. I would like to see some real "speaking out against" escalation.

Folks, remember that even though the Dems supposedly have a majority in the Senate, it's only because this DINO said he'd caucus with the Dems.

Lie-berman continues to show his true colors.

Speaker Pelosi has said "No blank check on Iraq"...

...when Bushiva and L'il Dick have already borrowed MORE against our children and grandchildrens' futures...

    ...that America's collective a*s can't cash...

  5. Barfly Says:

Poor Happy Guy. There are a lot of new members that need orientation. Look at their schedule, fool. They will be working for 143 days this year - up from the 103 days of the last congress. But you were perfectly Happy with their lazy attitude, right, dude?

Sheesh...the Sludge Report is so ridiculously partisan it's laughable. It's the internet equivalent of Fox News.

The Dem's take one Monday off and they get crucified. Never mind that the previous Congress...the Repub-ruled 109th Congress...worked only 103 days out of the year. Let the Dems take one day off, and Drudge crows about how it's 'breaking promises'.

And you post a link, Happy Guy, proving you're every bit as dumb as Drudge believes his audience to be. Kudos.

  7. Zooey Says:

Like Truth said, these weasels need to speak out publicly, not on the phone where they can claim to be "taken out of context."

  8. dlet Says:

    Happy,
Any link to Drudge is laughable....please. Anyway without even going there you are probably talking about the five day work week being shortened because of the college football game and a holiday. Brought to you by the same people that think the new Congress can stop a war in 100 hours. If these are the faults you guys will be "pointing out" for the next two years then I say thank the stars we are where we are.

  9. Krazny Says:

Lieberman sure isn't making friends. Unfortunate, that he won the election as an independant, but continues to side with the warmongers.

  10. napu Says:

Connecticut is full of self-interested idiots to have re-elected Lieberman just like the rest of the United States. Just because they perceive Lieberman helped Connecticut over the years, when in fact, he is harming them in the long run and the United States as a whole. It's amazing! It is so obvious that Lieberman is a very least brown-nosed and republican leaning opportunist. Give small trinket to Connecticut and then take away huge chunk from people of the United States.
All I can say these days is...WTF!!!

  11. Happy Guy Says:

Fine, you don't what a link from Drudge then here it is from Hoyer's own website.

Hey, I wish they would all work harder. I just hoped they would wait a little while before getting lazy. ROTFL. They start with a short week. Week 2 has a football game so let us make that short. Hmmm, next week is MLK day. Good job Dems. With that much hot air in congress even I may start to think global warming is real.

    ROTFL, ROTFL, ROTFL

Other Missouri lawmakers also have doubts about adding more troops. "What good is that going to do?" asked Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo. "I have seen nothing so far that would push me to think a surge is a good idea."

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said she would not consider approving more troops until the Bush administration explains what has gone wrong with the war.

  15. Happy Guy Says:

Lieberman is a Democrat all the way, he just has one issue you people jump on, the war. Gee Wiz, he is Jewish and the Arabs what to kill all Jews, can’t see why he would vote that way. Buy this group is too anti-Semitic to even see that.

    ROTFL

Joe and Chris Dodd are Democrats all the way. They have taxed the crap out of Connecticut, driven out big businesses and let the defense contract companies fold up left and right over the years.

    ROTFL

Besides, the way the Democratic party shafted him during the primaries I don’t see why or how he should work with the Democrats.

    ROTFL

  16. Thiassi Says:

@Happy guy - one day off? WOOOOW!

    ROFL, ROFL, ROFL...idiot.

No one was denying the day off, genius. They were saying it's just like Drudge readers to jump all over something as trivial as this because of a 1. slow news day or 2. you have NOTHING else to use.

Compare the amount of days worked in one years time and then you might have a case.

Starting to question this site? Half my posts never get on this site. The left-wing, anti-American conspiracy nuts who run this site are as bad as you people who think you have intelligent conversations about Republican’s poisoning Democrats to get the majority back.

But I am glad to see I got under people skin.

No day off here. I’m just a little lunch entertainment at your expense. I have a job. It looks like most liberals don’t. Tax the people who work so you can stay home and collect, right? No tax cuts for the wealthy (people who do work) because you need you rest while waiting for the mother ship.

I was trying to be tolerant and give them the benefit of the doubt, but not so much today.

    Lee's Life For Lies

An Iraqi insurgent propaganda video, containing what is described as a Christmas message from a U.S. soldier taped just before he was killed, appeared on dozens of Web sites and on the al Jazeera network. But a lot about the video does not add up, including the fact that ABC News found the supposedly dead soldier is "alive and well" and present for duty, according to a U.S. Army spokesman at Fort Campbell, Ky. "There are a whole bunch of lies on that tape," said Lt. Col. Ed Loomis at Fort Campbell. "It is nothing but a total fabrication." A producer at al Jazeera said it would change its description of the video after learning from ABC News that the soldier was not dead.

Is there any point in responding to "Happy Guy?" Posing challenging questions is one thing, but come on. This is ridiculous. The guy is just nuts.

  26. Bluedog49 Says:

James York, here's a thought. Why don't you wait a little longer than 5 days before you proclaim the new Democratic leadership of the house a failure. After all, it took Repubs a few months to push through some of their "Contract on America."

If a troll Rants on a blog, and nobody respobnds, is he still an idiot?

Much like Hal whathisname, Happy Guy needs to be ignored, I don't think he has ever posted on topic, and it is clear his IQ is a bit on the low side. He is only interested in needling people, and getting some sort of reaction. Ignoring him would be a far better way to go about it. It would piss him off to no end.

  28. RUCerious Says:

Krazny, I'm fine with pissing him off, would rather piss on him...

  29. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

How about borrowing the FOX News technique and start with "Some people..." then indirectly comment, without direct reference to the troll itself?

  30. Krazny Says:

Sadly PLC, that would still be a reference to him. IMHO it would work better, to ignore all together, while continuing to discuss the thread at hand.

  31. Jack Says:

I don't understand this plan, whatsoever. All major military generals are against it.

But it does not at ALL surprise me that the Bush administration will go it's own course, and disregard what the respected officials have to say. Its a shame more troops will be put in this civil war.

  32. Sharon Cox Says:

Caption contest...McCrazy say's.....Brother Lieberman and I have decided to run for the office of president, just not sure which of us wan't the number one slot.....

I have come to the conclusion one of two reasons or both are why troll's post and flip crap at us....#1 they are paid by the reich or TP to stir up shit and keep the thread's and posters active....#2 They all have masochism tendencies and need us to beat up on them in print to get their jollies....May I suggest we deny them the privlages here...Blessings all

  33. tarazan Says:

Is Liebrman sending any of his relatives over there to Iraq? I heard him saying 'we just cannot withdraw...'; he is showing bravado postering...I hope he lives up to such postering and send one of his kids to Baghdad..because I read some are going there for the third and fourth time .

  39. Happy Guy Says:

big papa - You spout as much stupid trash as anyone. Factless garbage. Joe is a Democrat. He just doesn't think all jews should be killed like you and these other liberals think. Otherwise he wants the American flag burnt and all the other America hating crap you liberal \ Democrats believe in.
