In today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow tried to argue that the Nov. 7 midterm elections could be read as a mandate for President Bush to increase U.S. troops in Iraq:
QUESTION: Tony, the president obviously, though, did not read what happened November 7th as a mandate to start bringing troops home.
SNOW: The president believes that — if you take a look at the elections, you can read any number of messages. I mean, when people were asked in exit interviews what was their top concern, Iraq was number four; corruption was number one.
No results from the midterm elections pointed to the American public calling for an escalation of U.S. troops in Iraq. A CNN poll taken days after the election found that just 16 percent of the American public believed the President should increase U.S. troops in Iraq. In contrast, 60 percent wanted some or all troops withdrawn.
As ABC News noted, the midterm elections showed that the “war in Iraq is a serious concern.” Fifty-seven percent of voters said that they disapproved of Bush’s handling of the war.
Pursed lips, I hate it…

January 8th, 2007 at 5:26 pmAnd this surprises who? In 2000 I voted for Gore and then when W was appointed, I naively assumed that losing the popular vote, most likely the electoral vote and being APPOINTED by the Supreme Court, W would have to basically “tread water” for four years. No mandate logically would mean no major shifts in any policy. Boy was I WRONG.
W doesn’t believe in anything except his absolute grasp for power. Why does it surprise anyone that an actual, proven defeat (at least his 2nd and I believe his 3rd) slow him down?
Impeach (in this order) Cheney then Bush (must be done withing hours to prevent him from appointing a new VP).

I don’t see in your small transcript where Tony Snow tried to argue that the Nov. 7 midterm elections could be read as a mandate for President Bush to increase U.S. troops in Iraq. Is there more to the transcript or maybe there is some video that would show that he indeed tried to argue that point?
January 8th, 2007 at 5:27 pmSNOW: The president believes that — if you take a look at the elections, you can read any number of messages.
Well, Tony, one message is loud and clear: the people are certainly tired of juniors flaky sh*t.

Yes, “joeslogic” wins the prize today for the “Pulling it out of your a$$ and seeing if anyone will go for it” comment of the day. Because, according to “joe”, the sweep in the November elections for the Democrats that allowed them to gain majorities in the House and Senate for the first time in 12 years was actually…wait for it…a WIN by the Republicans and a sign that the public is “disgusted” with Dems.
Someone was talking about a hooka, I think that “joe” is bogarting it.

Almost total media support behind the dems. They were out of power and got to take advantage of spoiling war strategy with (TOTALLY UN-PROSECUTED LEAKS of confidential information). If the American public is so thoroughly disgusted with the Democratic party that they voted Democratic candidates into office -what does it say about their feelings for Republican candidates, who couldn’t muster enough votes to remain in office?
What utter absurdity, and what a ridiculous proposition: Victory is defeat, and reaping votes reveals a lack of popular support. Puh-leeze.

You can keep on saying it but that does not make it so. Saying it over and over does manage to influence the naive and the weak. But those who know better are just more emboldened to hold their ground on what they know is right.
January 8th, 2007 at 5:56 pmI am surprised that some people attach so much importance to THE average. After all, it is just that: An average. Half of the results will be below it, and the other half above it.

You are quite correct, unbelievable. In the Senate, only 1/3 of the seats were up for re-election. If they were all up for re-releciton, the Repugs would certainly have lost more. Moreover, although the Democrats gained only a bare majority this time, they generally represent the most populous states, and, taken as a whole, a much larger majority of the American public. (In fact, even when they were down to 45 seats in the Senate, the states they represented accounted for a larger percentage of the American population than those with Repug Senators.)

Especially when the radio media gets the truth out enough that people start asking (on a large scale) what is the televised media not letting us what talk radio is? A little confusing for people “how can it be?†they will ask. http://www.unknownnews.net/RepublicanFamilyValues.html
Here’s just a taste:
Sept.29, 2006:
Another Republican Congressman turns out to be a skanky perv
Excerpt: Congressman Mark Foley (R-Florida), as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect.
June 28, 2006:
Republican advertising consultant behind anti-Clinton smear convicted of child molestation
Excerpt: A political consultant whose company was behind a television ad accusing the Clinton-Gore administration of giving away nuclear technology was convicted of child molestation charges.
April 28, 2006:
Defense contractor allegedly provided hookers for Cunningham
Excerpt: The allegations were raised by Mitchell Wade, another defense contractor who also has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the bribery conspiracy involving former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, the officials said. Cunningham is serving a prison term of eight years, four months after pleading guilty in November to taking $2.4 million in homes, yachts and other bribes.
Wade is cooperating with investigators as part of his plea agreement in February. He has told them that Brent Wilkes, a San Diego defense contractor who has been identified as a co-conspirator, secured prostitutes, limousines and suites at two Washington hotels for Cunningham, the officials said.
April 20, 2006:
Republican claims tight finances,
gets child support obligation cut in half,
then gives $250,000 to his own campaign for Governor
Excerpt: Scottsdale businessman Mike Harris has put $100,000 of his own money into his campaign for governor just months after convincing a judge he was too poor to make full support payments for his only child.
Harris said he got the court to cut his support payments in half, to $1,000 a month, after coming close to bankruptcy. Harris said he now is in much better financial health, which is why he has committed to spend up to $250,000 in personal funds on his bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
But Harris said he doesn’t intend to start paying more to support John Carter, 7, who lives with his mother in Northern California. Harris, who describes himself on his campaign Web site as a “proud and loving father,” said $1,000 a month “for one kid for a four-year marriage is pretty darn generous.”
Oct. 10, 2005:
Christian Coalition head molested three family members, family says
Excerpt: After news broke that local law enforcement officials were investigating complaints that Louis Beres, longtime chairman of the Christian Coalition of Oregon, had molested three female family members when they were pre-teens, The Oregonian in Portland went out and interviewed Beres’ family members.
Two told reporters that Beres, indeed, had molested them. All three said they have been interviewed for several hours by detectives.
“I was molested,” said one of the women, now in her early 50s. “I was victimized, and I’ve suffered all my life for it. I’m still afraid to be in the same room with [Beres].”
The coalition led by Beres, 70, champions socially conservative candidates and causes. Its Web site describes the group as “Oregon’s leading grassroots organization defending our Godly heritage.” The group opposes abortion, gay rights, and stem cell research. It is affiliated with the national Christian Coalition, which was founded in 1989 by television evangelist Pat Robertson.

January 8th, 2007 at 7:05 pmI wonder how the new Saddam video will affect our troopers on the ground over there?….
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/world/4455547.html
BAGHDAD, Iraq — A new video of Saddam Hussein’s corpse, with a gaping neck wound, was posted on the Internet early Tuesday, the second leaked release of clandestine pictures from the former leader’s hanging.
The video appeared to have been taken with a camera phone, like the graphic video of the hanging which showed guards taunting Saddam in the final moments of his life.
The footage pans up the shrouded body of the former leader from the feet. It apparently was taken shortly after Saddam was executed and placed on a gurney. He was hanged shortly before dawn on Dec. 30.
As the panning shot reaches the head region, the white shroud is pulled back and reveals Saddam’s head and neck.
His head is unnaturally twisted at a 90 degree angle to his right. It shows a gaping bloody wound, circular in shape, about an inch below his jaw line on the left side of his neck. His left cheek is marked with red blotches, and there is blood on the shroud where it covered his head.
The newest video leak was likely to increase the angry reaction over the way the execution was carried out. There already has been a global outcry about the undignified manner in which the Shiite-dominated government hanged Saddam, a Sunni.
The 27-second video was posted on an Iraqi news Web site that is known to support Saddam’s outlawed Baath Party.
“A new film of the late immortal martyr, President Saddam Hussein,” the web site said in a headline over a link to the video.

At 31 I went backpacking through Europe with a friend who was unplugging himself from his own conservative Christian roots, and it gave me the courage to start questioning my own life philosophies that I’d been given rather than chosen.
Once I began to question it, it unraveled so quickly there was little in the way to deny that reality definitely has a liberal bias. Life is also less stressful, and far more enjoyable without all the superfluous conservative rules, paranoia and general malaise that comes from focusing on what you are not and what you don’t have.

Anyway, folks, we’ve let the trolls bring this thread way off topic, which is Tony’s attempt at another snowjob.

Too many of the core dems are DLC. They may have ridden into office on an anti-war mandate, but they won’t neccessarily honor it, political expediency is an old habit and Rahm Emmanuel et. al are as beholden to the corporate power structure as any rethug. Thats why I became a Green. We the people will have to march, again and again, until chimpy is impeached and our foreigbn policy is returned to the hands of saner people, if the chimp doesn’t blow us all up first.

January 8th, 2007 at 9:08 pmSURGE======ESCALATION
Escalation is the phenomenon of something getting more intense step by step, for example a quarrel, or, notably, military presence and nuclear armament during the Cold War. (Compare to escalator, a device that lifts something to a higher level.) The term is said to be originally coined by Herman Kahn.
In psychology it is a change in behaviour, usually from stable or acceptable towards unstable or unacceptable.

If your such a big man conservative dude, and you seem to be an apologist for the Furor. I assume you voted for the Chimpboy? Correct? Tell me this; if your such a conservative then why did you vote for this president? NeoCon ideologies are based in Straussian’s interpretation of Machiavellian logic. As did the NeoCons, Hitler used religion as Machiavelli recommended: “as a tool of political influence and control”.
Many different characteristics are attributed to fascism by different scholars, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, authoritarianism, militarism, corporatism, anti-liberalism, and anti-communism. Wow that sure sounds like present day America to me?
Strauss noted that thinkers of the first rank, going back to Plato, had raised the problem of whether good and effective politicians could be completely truthful and still achieve the necessary ends of their society. By implication, Strauss asks his readers to consider whether “noble lies” have any role at all to play in uniting and guiding the polis. He believed that the “ends justified the means” at all costs as Machiavelli coined.
Just something to think about?

January 8th, 2007 at 9:37 pmYou should realize by now that every time you bring up Ted Kennedy’s accident, someone here will remind you of the Laura Welch Bush-caused collision, which similarly caused a young person to die. Both fatal accidents occurred in the 1960s. For more recent Repug accident history, how about this from wikipedia?
“On August 16, 2003, (Republican Governor of S. Dakota) Janklow was involved in a fatal traffic collision when the white Cadillac he was driving hit motorcyclist Randolph E. Scott at a rural intersection near Trent, South Dakota. Scott, a 55-year-old from Minnesota, was thrown from his motorcycle and killed instantly. Janklow suffered a broken hand and bleeding on the brain. In the ensuing investigation of the accident, it was determined Janklow was likely driving at least 70 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. ” Wikipedia goes on to explain that Janklow had a history of getting speeding tickets. He was also once cited, when Attorney General of SD, for sexual misconduct with a native American woman, though the charges were later dropped.
And what? No explanation of Jeff Gannon’s frequent visits to the WH?! I didn’t think so.

They just make shit up, and then shout to the heavens that it’s true, swear to god. The sad thing is, people like us are the only ones calling them on their bullshit. The sheeple lap that crap up.

You are probably wringing you’re hands with baited breath in anticipation of a headline about some troops getting blown away.
And, employing that same awesome Joes Logic, it’s fair to say that Joe and all his right-wing buddies were giggling like schoolgirls when the World Trade Center came crashing down, because they knew how much it would help Bush’s sagging poll numbers and give the Republicans something to scare voters with for years to come.
Likewise, using Joes Logic, we see that escalating the war and keeping it going forever would be great, because it would help make sure that Bush didn’t get blamed for losing it. So what if it gets dumped in somebody else’s lap? The important thing is making sure Bush doesn’t get blamed for anything. It’s joelogical.
Is that about right, Joe?

With All due respect sir, The Supreme Court only told the Florida Supreme Court that they COULD NOT RE-WRITE THE ELECTION LAWS in the State of Florida. George W. Bush WON the 2000 Presidential Election because he got the Most Electoral Votes. Please STOP spreading LIES about the 2000 Election. Al Gore was a LOSER and so was Johh Kerry — neither on was fit to be Head Dog Catcher!!!!!
January 8th, 2007 at 11:58 pmFor the trolls with a cigar hang-up,
Former Repug House Majority Leader Tom Delay also has some issues concerning cigars. From wikipedia,
“In April 2005, Time Magazine published a photo from a July 2003 trip to Israel, in which DeLay is seen smoking a Cuban cigar.[44] The consumption or purchase of Cuban cigars is illegal in the United States (but was, at the time, not illegal abroad). Since September 2004, the U.S. Treasury Department’s enforcement of the law has been toughened to forbid consumption (smoking) or purchase of Cuban cigars by U.S. citizens anywhere in the world.[45] As Cuban cigars have been a (if not the) central symbol of the U.S. embargo on Cuban trade, DeLay’s action – apparently contradicting his well-known and strongly-stated personal convictions regarding Cuba – was widely reported.”
Also, once when toting a cigar in his mouth in a cafeteria within a Congressional building, he was told by a waitress that it is illegal to smoke on federal government property. His retort was something like “I am the federal government.” Great guy, I’m sure you miss him a lot, Mightette, Joe and rachel b.

A Federal Judge Ordered “Scum Bag” Clinton to pay $850,000.00 to Paula Jones and she stripped him of his Law License in AR. Yes, very fruitless: one William Jefferson vs. Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Jack Abramoff, ex-Ohio governor Taft, Tom Delay, Bill Frist (under investigation for insider trading), the GOP people in New Hampshire now in prison for blocking telephone lines during an election. etc. Too many Repugs to remember in one breath.
January 9th, 2007 at 12:32 amBush may have won the electoral vote in 2000 (and by a mere 537 votes in Florida), but Gore beat him by over 500,000 nationwide in what you call Repugnacant country. Why don’t you come back in late 2008, and we’ll see if your prediction is true then?
You know Greg the supreme court actually ruled on this matter and didn’t send it back to the lower court. Also, Tuesday, Dec. 12—The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Bush v. Gore 7–2 to reverse the Florida Supreme Court, which had ordered manual recounts in certain counties. The Court contends that the recount was not treating all ballots equally, and was thus a violation of the Constitution’s equal protection and due process guarantees. So, if the Florida Supreme court would have not just focused on the two counties and instead mandated a recount in all counties, the supreme court would have ruled in favor of Gore. Instead, by the time it got back to the Florida Supreme court it too late. The deadline to file any more petitions ran out. Actually, Gore lead in both the national popular count and the electoral college even with the 357 votes tied up in Florida. So sir with all due respect bl*w me!
Tuesday, Dec. The Supreme Court of Florida would be required to set up new voting standards and carry them out in a recount. The justices, however, split 5–4 along partisan lines about implementing a remedy. Five justices maintain that this process and the recount must adhere to the official deadline for certifying electoral college votes: midnight, Dec. 12; other justices question the importance of this date. Since the Court makes its ruling just hours before the deadline, it in effect ensures that it is too late for a recount. The decision generates enormous controversy. Those objecting to the ruling assert that the Supreme Court, and not the electorate, has effectively determined the outcome of the presidential election. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg writes in a scathing dissent, “the Court’s conclusion that a constitutionally adequate recount is impractical is a prophecy the Court’s own judgment will not allow to be tested. Such an untested prophecy should not decide the Presidency of the United States.â€
January 9th, 2007 at 12:48 amNice of Tony Snowjob to finally admit that the Republican party is corrupt! Perhaps we can see him call a reporter names for quoting him on that statement!

Follow up Question: So you’re saying that truth has a liberal bias?

Greg Nevins; Bush, Cheney, et al took oaths to uphold, protect, and defend the Constitution. Lying to Congress is a felony-just ask Ollie North. Not only have this administration lied to Congress and committed high crimes and misdemeanors, but violated the UN charter, the Nuremberg rulings, and the Geneva conventions, and U.S. laws(these ARE U.S. laws as well). As such, they should not only be impeached, but hailed, tried, convicted, and executed for the war criminals they are.

January 9th, 2007 at 7:42 amTo the Administrator,
January 9th, 2007 at 7:45 amWalter E. Evans has double-posted on #240 and 241, and has also posted the exact thing on the Geraldo Rivera thread (and perhaps others). As his language is not abusive, I don’t think he is violating the Terms of Use enough to be banned. But shouldn’t once be enough for his statement?
Walter,
January 9th, 2007 at 8:21 amAlthough I may not like all of your message, I respect your right to release it. I have no trouble with your doing it once on one thread but not everywhere, okay? And it would be best for you that way, or else some people may start accusing you of being a troll. Your apology is accepted.

January 9th, 2007 at 8:30 amI am not enough of a technological whiz to explain how things sometimes get double (or even triple and quadriple)-posted unbeknownst to the sender, just as I’m not sure how my attempt at a message in #242 got posted before I wrote it out. (It could be because the cat sleeping next to the computer stretched out one of her paws without my noticing it.) All I know is that these things sometimes happen, so I will accept that the double-posting here is not intentional. However, I’m sure you must realize you have posted the same message elsewhere on TP, and I am merely suggesting that you reign it in, okay?
Have a good day.
Usually the reson for the “double posting” could be as simple as double-clicking on the “Post” button, or because you don’t see your article appear instantly so you re-enter the entire thing.
You have to remember that the database in which responses are stored does not always immediately update and show your post. Once you’ve entered your response and pressed “Post”, go have a walk or check out the other articles, THEN come back to see if there were any responses to your post.
Something I love are the people who complain bitterly about how everything is to PC (Politically Correct) nowadays. They forget that PC started with “Oh, you find the word ‘nigger’ offensive? OK, what word do you want me to use instead?”
If you’re completely against everything PC, then you should start using the word ‘nigger’ in your everyday speech. I’m just sayin’. . . . .
January 9th, 2007 at 8:59 amDemocrat Soldier,
January 9th, 2007 at 9:16 amYour explanation about double-posting may be valid for a blog like this one. However, sometimes my regular e-mail in-box contains mail that has been double, triple, and even quadruple or more-posted, perhaps because the Send key was hit too hard, or some other reason. If you have a better explanation for that, I would love to hear it, as I am admittedly not a technological whiz.
Have a good day!
Jane – Flawed “millenium†“argument, Jane. When the wack-o-voters of Mass. keep sending the lying scum, Senator Ted back to Congress – it is current….There’s a reason the statute of limitations does not apply to murder….(But let me compliment on your new-found use of gutter speak.)

It’s a democracy and the voters voted for him. It’s been 40 freaking years, just deal with it. And if you think that ’shit’ and ‘crap’ = gutter speak, you’re awfully naive.

Very weak even for you, Mightette Hypocrite. F- for shooting.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:21 pmWhy not just have the daily breifing broadcast on Faux?
Not much difference in what we are getting.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:34 pmOk all you sick degenerates. I came back to find nothing. I was hoping for a fight you all need a good philosophical nose bleed. To bad you keep it buried in the sand.
Spelling heh is that all that you got?
Now since you know you are wrong on the issue of that scumbag senator in MA and know quite well that comparing him to Laura is apples to oranges.
Lets here the next argument that you sick Dems were not aware of the Foley issue well in advance of the “October Surprise” time frame.
When did the Dems find out?
SPIT IT OUT. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
January 9th, 2007 at 8:13 pmYou all are a spineless, principal less, shifty bunch.
January 9th, 2007 at 8:15 pmNo, Joe, it’s not just spelling; you can’t even count (ie. listing three names and saying there are four). You also have nothing to say but a lot of insults. Yes, we are “principal less,” as “principal” means the “head of a school.” We’re adults here and no longer go to school. Maybe your principal ought to give you a spanking because you are “principle-less.”
To the Administrator,
January 10th, 2007 at 3:32 amIsn’t it about time to ban this troll, who has no arguments to present–just a bunch of poorly written insults? He has violated yours “Terms of Use” several times.
#255 Mightette Aphid,
January 10th, 2007 at 8:45 amFormer SD Governor Janklow resigned his seat in the House of Representatives only because he was convicted of manslaughter and was about to be imprisoned. Now out of prison, he works as a lobbyist like so many other Repug scoundrels.
You can spin this all you like, it is a fatal accident caused by a Republican that occurred this millennium–not some four decades ago like Ted Kennedy’s and Laura Bush’s crash.
BTW, your reference to me with sexual innuendoes is about is sick as your dead child joke: DOA.
