The Guardian is reporting that ExxonMobil chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson recently promised investors that it plans to “soften” its public image on global warming. But as one person at the meeting noted, Exxon doesn’t actually plan to change its positions:
Chairman and chief executive Rex Tillerson made clear to a select group of top Wall Street fund managers and equity analysts that it would not be changing its basic position on global warming - just explain it better. …
A note put out after the meeting by Fadel Gheit, oil analyst at the Oppenheimer brokerage in New York, says the company “has clearly taken a much less adversial and more reconciliatory position on key environmental issues.”
But the note adds: “Although the tone has changed, the substance remains the same.”
The company told the Guardian that its official position on climate change is that greenhouse gas emissions “are one of the factors that contribute to climate change” and despite the “scientific uncertainties, the risk (of global warming) is so great that it justifies taking action.”
Exxon can attempt to soften its language as much as it wants, but its record remains clear. According to a recent report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, Exxon has “funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science.” The big-oil front group the Competitive Enterprise Institute has received $1.6 million from Exxon since 1998, using the funding to distort global warming research and attack any meaningful action to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.

ExxonMobil, another branch of the Anti-Christ
January 9th, 2007 at 12:15 pmGreat Piece in the Chicago Tribune about the Gates foundation spending millions to give shots to the underprivileged in third world countries and at the same time holding stock in companies such as Exxon that are continual polluters in the same areas.
January 9th, 2007 at 12:17 pmIn other words, “cr*p - they’re on to us.”
January 9th, 2007 at 12:19 pm“Although the tone has changed, the substance remains the same.â€
This statement reminds me of yesterday when I was flipping through different news sites. On sites like Reuters, Der Spigel, The Guardian, BBC, etc. a headline read “US sub hits Japanese boat”. When I saw the same story on CNN it read “Japanese fishing boat hits US sub”. Funny thing is the front of the sub and the back of the ship were damaged. I am no naval forensic professional but come on. The substance of the story was the same but the tone was different. Didn’t check FOX though. Their’s would probably be”Japanese warship rams US sub”.
Anyway. Exxon sucks.

January 9th, 2007 at 12:58 pmIf we take all of Al Gore’s claims and predictions for catastrophe as facts, then the reason the Earth is warming is because of the burning of fossil fuels. So lets stop burning fossil fuels. Unfortunately, the US continues to build coal plants, which are much more polluting (, contributing to global warming)and radioactive than nuclear power plants.
The only way we can act against global warming and clean up our environment is by increasing the number of nuclear power plants in the US. This is the only way to defeat global warming. There are currently 6 new plants in the early stages of being built.
We can have the first new nuclear power plants up within 5 years. We have the design; heck, the French are using it to build their plants. France gets 85% percent of their energy from clean, safe, nuclear power. China and India are also headed that way.
The side benefit of this is that it gets us off of depending on oil from politically unstable regions.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:04 pmIt’s just as annoying when that other person does it too. But keep on, at least when the other person does it they actually have a point to make.
Exxon hasn’t changed their tactics, they just switched to a new PR company. Public relations groups subvert democracy, TP should post more about them.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:06 pmExxon should hire Will Ferrell to do PR for them, it would be just about as convincing as the crap the Competitive Enterprise Institue produces. See: http://www.transbuddha.com/mediaHolder.php?id=1147 for details.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:06 pm#17 muckdog - that does make sense. Not this part -”If we take all of Al Gore’s claims and predictions for catastrophe as facts,” That’s just too hard to swallow.
But you have to remember that the tree huggers don’t want any progress. Never mind nuke plants. Heck, has there even been a license to build a new plant in the US issued since 3 mile island? It does not matter that the rest of the world goes that way it is impossible to do anything in America without some left-wing-nut saying it will kill a frog or something. The liberals don’t care what the French and Chinese are doing, as long as they disagree with us in the U.N. they are happy.
Just keep it in mind at all time “The left hates America†so don’t look to them for support.
Oh, I almost forgot – ROTFL
January 9th, 2007 at 1:19 pm#20. If this were true, that we needed to “prove” global warming is happening before establishing policy to address it as a potential threat, is like saying we would need to “prove” we could land on the moon before going there. The Japanese government plans 100 years ahead via the Ministry of Industry and Trade and their corporations are are doing just fine; better than fine, their kicking our butts. The technologies that will be developed to address these challenges are the jobs and industries of the future. Corporations benefit from the influence of smart govemernment policies. Just becuase GWB has provided the best example of “stupid government” we’ve ever had, doesn’t mean we don’t have excellent examples of smart goverment like our effort to land on the moon. Wake up!
January 9th, 2007 at 1:23 pmThese oil industry chiefs like ‘Pocket Warming’ talk instead of ‘Global Warming’ one.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:24 pmThe simple truth is that the current economic situation with oil companies trumps the benefit to the people! So their pockets are more important than the environment, and as a side result the CEO has no economic incentive to change, because their pay is almost limitless!
Welcome to GREED AND DEBAUCHERY at its best! The government has allowed these corporations to act as a CARTEL and their crimes are no less dire than those of DRUG CARTELS!
But when you have (had) a CONGRESS that looked the other way as long as they got a piece of the pie, then it is acceptable to the current situation! Then for the trolls, if the world would end tomorrow, they would still sit in amazement while saying, CLINTON should have seen this coming!
Oh well, I guess they’ll tune into Pat Robertson and send him money, since he seems to know the future.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pm“So until you can prove this global warming craze …”
I will ignore the murky phrasing of this, which implies that for some reason it is the existence of a “craze” rather than the phenomenon of global warming that requires demonstration.
The problem, of course, lies in the nature of proof. Scientific theories can rarely be “proven” in the sense that most people understand (or wish to understand) that word. Karl Popper would claim that the hallmark of a scientific theory is that it can be DISproven.
The question is less whether the phenomenon of global warming is (or can be) “proven,” but whether (as Wittgenstein might say) it makes sense to doubt it.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pmMuckdog,
You are woefully naive about the global warming situation. Using nuclear power alone to replace fossil fuel would require the U.S. to build thousands of new plants at a staggering capital cost, and the known uranium reserves would last at most a few decades (source: David Goodstein’s The End of the Age of Oil).
Kevin,
The stupidity of your remark about the sun speaks for itself.
Happy Guy,
You are a proven serial liar about global warming.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pm#20 You cannot expect Exxon Mobil to buy into this global warming craze unless it it proven and the government is mandated to do something .
Anything different goes against what a corporation is setup to do .
Make money .
So until you can prove this global warming craze and it is mandated to the corporations to adhere to a change in US government policy your argument does not hold any water .
You are more or less typing into a blank screen .
Comment by Las Vegas Louie — January 9, 2007 @ 1:09 pm
So, using your logic, if a corporation (a money making machine) sees losings in the acknowledgement of a scientific fact, and the subsequent adoption of the clean standards associated, the corporation must wait until receives a mandate issued by the government?
So, you’re saying that the corporations are lobbying in Washington and doing enormous PR campaings to prevent such a mandate, deceiving the people? Mandate who comes from the wishes people of the USA? You mean, you think that is valid for a corporation to contravene the will of the USA people?

But it looks like you’re misinformed or stupid. Maybe a combination of both. I blame you for global warming. You are for more coal plants. You are for burning oil. You stand in the way of clean and safe energy.

January 9th, 2007 at 2:55 pmI don’t think HappyGuy is lying, but rather just completely ignorant and deluded… Which is exactly how the neo-con Uber-Lords want them, and the rest of the populace, to be.
I’m sure his ‘facts’ are all simply repeats, probably even verbatim, of bits heard on FoxNews. Studies have shown that FoxNews viewers are the most ignorant segment of the population in regards to current events, and, yet, they believe themselves the most well informed. And, it is impossible to shake them of that belief, or to prove to them their ‘facts’ are correct, thanks to the ultra-right media’s constant bleating about the non-existant “left wing media bias.”
In fact, a wannabe neo-con ‘friend’ of mine at work recently informed me that Reuters was NOT a reliable news source because they are obviously a French company. My response was to send him the Reuters company bio from their website which states clearly that they are, in fact, a British company, but he still bleats about “Reuters’ French lies!” whenever I quote an article in our debates.
It’s easier to debate with an actual trained monkey instead of one of these trained human-monkeys.
January 9th, 2007 at 3:02 pmHey, I got to do an experiment with Bill Nye. He is very cool. Trust me, he is not the least bit ignorant, and he does lie. He doesn’t get it from Fox News. He digs up weighty material like official government reports, then grossly misrepresents the information found there. When called on it, he is extremely persistent with the misrepresentation. For example, a few months ago he adamently insisted that release of CO2 into the atmosphere has been declining in recent years, and therefore no action is needed. His backing for this conclusion was cherry-picked data that he severely twisted to back up his claim. He is pathologically dishonest.

January 9th, 2007 at 3:20 pmI can go back to hunting and gathering. Life would be pretty simple at that point.
January 9th, 2007 at 3:30 pmThe debate is OVER. The actions of the big oil companies is a direct response to the effects of climate change, not a response to consumer change. These are huge, international companies who see a CREDIBLE environmental threat to their bottom line, so they’re trying to persuade public opinion BEFORE public opinion begins to financially affect them. They’re trying to be ahead of the curve, but they’ve entered the game in the 4th inning, LOSERS.
January 9th, 2007 at 3:31 pmHappy Guy, since I know you are trying to bait me into revealing my true identity, I give you this to puzzle out: Haroon Kheshgi and I have worked for the same boss, although at different times, separated by six years.

Good point. They aren’t the same. Exxon has been far more intransigent about global warming than some of the other oil companies, and deserves special scorn for it.
January 9th, 2007 at 4:41 pm1.6 million to CEI pales in comparison to the 100 million Exxon is funding Stanford University’s Global Climate & Energy Project.

So much for TP research. Falls short as usual.
January 9th, 2007 at 4:56 pmWAIT!!! I NEED TO POST AN URGENT CORRECTION!!!
Throughout today I have mistaken Happy Guy for Hippie. Thank you for coming around to clear up my confusion, Hippie.
As for you Happy Guy, I must retract several comments in which I claimed that you have told specific lies here about global warming. These are comments #27, #37, and #47. So I am truly sorry about that.
As for you Hippie, you are clearly a professional liar working for an Exxon proxy somewhere. The George C. Marshall Institute, perhaps? A public relations firm secretly hire by Exxon? Let us know.
As for the money issue you mention, $1.6 million wouldn’t buy much research, but Exxon gives CEI this money to simply manufacture lies. $1.6 million buys an awful lot of lies. So really you are comparing apples and oranges.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:11 pmyeaa. verbalkint is rightt. even though happy guy seems cool. i guess. but like seriusly, hippie: obviously yerr juss plain stupid.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:50 pmIf you call me a liar, you should at least tell us what those lies are, mr verbalkint.
You’re right. 1.6 million doesn’t but mcuh research, but 100 million does.
You’ll be retracting your name calling soon I’m sure.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:54 pmHippie, look at comment #47. You are a determined propagandist.
As for 100 million, let’s put this into perspective. This amount of money equals 1% of Exxon’s profit in a single quarter. It equals 1% of the money spent annually in missile defense, a transparently fraudulent weapons program. This is just Exxon throwing a few pennies around to impress the ignorant and confused. Alternative energy research needs many billions of dollars if we are to any hope at all of saving ourselves from the climate disaster that lies ahead.
January 9th, 2007 at 6:23 pmRealscientist, that weighty government document that you have refused to read is the US Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions that all Annex 1 countries provide the UNFCCC every year. You have lied about my position on climate change and the information that I provided directly from this document. The data shows that US GHG emissions increased at a much larger rate in the 90’s than they have in this decade.
But your not a scientist. All you have is name calling and false representations of other people’s arguments.
http://yosemite.epa.gov/ oar/ globalwarming.nsf/ content/ Emissions.html
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prepares the official U.S. Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks to comply with existing commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).1 Under decision 3/CP.5 of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, national inventories for UNFCCC Annex I parties should be provided to the UNFCCC Secretariat each year by April 15.
January 9th, 2007 at 7:00 pmI’m not a scientist? You are the guy who doesn’t understand the difference between rate, and rate of change of rate (i.e. first derivative vs. second derivative). Or who does understand it, but obfuscates the issue in the service of your fossil-fuel industry funded employer, whoever that is.
By the way, read comment #56.
January 9th, 2007 at 7:08 pmAren’t these *oil guys* funny? You have *hippie* shooting blanks, and Cheney shooting his friends? Bad aim, bad follow through, and just complete dumba$$ idiots. January 9th, 2007 at 7:38 pmI can only think of one position when I think of what Exxon has been doing to the people of this country, their land, and their resources. But, if we continue to bend over by electing texas oil cartels to masquerade as an administration and allowing CEO’s to direct PAC money to politicians and parties, then really who is to blame? The outrageously greedy blind-rich oil profiteers or the average American who idolizes and believes in them? The longer I live, the more it seems to me like the playing ground is anything BUT level, the new American Dream is to stay solvent, and the fox is in the Big White henhouse.
January 9th, 2007 at 9:14 pmSolitaire, you hit it.
January 9th, 2007 at 10:14 pmIf Rex Tillerson found a means to make a profit from non carbon emission fuels, maybe he’d change his mind. More R&D bucks…less profit..
In the meantime he can stay the course and always buy more air conditioning if needed with his huge profits.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:57 amRealscientist, see the data and specifically the graph 1990-2004 trends in the latest emissions report to the UN. Something you should have read before you called me a liar.
