Kennedy Introduces Bill Requiring Congressional Approval For Iraq Escalation

Today, Sen. Ted Kennedy will introduce the first legislation demanding accountability for President Bush’s Iraq policy. Kennedy’s bill will require the president to gain new congressional authority before escalating the war in Iraq. Below, a summary of the bill from Kennedy’s office:

The legislation requires the Congress to vote before the President escalates troop levels in Iraq.

The legislation claims the people’s right to a full voice in the President’s plan to send more troops into the Iraq civil war. It says that no funds can be spent to send additional troops to Iraq unless Congress approves the President’s proposed escalation of American forces.

The Iraq War Resolution of 2002 authorized a war against the regime of Saddam Hussein because he was believed to have weapons of mass destruction and an operational relationship with Al Qaeda, and was in defiance of U.N. Security Council Resolutions.

The mission of our armed forces today in Iraq no longer bears any resemblance to the mission authorized by Congress.

Iraq has descended into civil war and sectarian violence continues to escalate. …

President Bush should not be permitted to increase the number of United States troops in harm’s way in the civil war without a specific new authorization from Congress.

ThinkProgress has obtained a copy of the bill, which you can read HERE.

What has this resolution got to do with Chappaquidick? Er, nothing. Ok trolls, carry on..

  2. what, me worry? says:

and what happens when Bush vetoes the bill?

What if Bush sends in the troops before the bill gets to his desk?

What if Bush sits on the bill, sends in the troops, then vetoes the bill?

What if Bush vetoes the bill, and sends in the troops before Congress overrides the vetoe?

What if Bush signs the bill, and issues a signing statement that he considers it to be advisory?

    Finally a little accountability…Kennedy rocks.

  4. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Three outcomes possible:

1: The bill fails to pass (the most overwhelmingly probable outcome).

2: The bill passes, Chimpy vetoes it, bill fails to pass over veto.

3: The bill passes, Chimpy vetos it, bill passes over veto, Chimpy signs it into law, only to sneak back later and attach one of his famous ’signing statements’, stating that as Commander-in-Chief, he can do whatever he wants ‘in the interests of national security’, Congress be damned.

In other words, whatever happens, nothing will change.

Folks, if a President thinks he can issue ’signing statements’ that enable him to ignore the will of Congress, no law is going to rein him in. Impeachment is the only answer at this point…it is Congress’ duty initiate impeachment proceedings…if they fail, they are every bit as guilty of violating their Oath of Office as Chimpy is.

  5. tarazan says:

We know where Lieberman, and McCain stand on this one.

  6. hil says:

hmm but shouldn’t he introduce a bill to end these blasted ’signing statements’ first.

otherwise Cimpy can go along with everything but still say and do whatever the heck he wants

  7. hellinabucket says:

It’s a preemptive strike. Put this with Fiengold’s request for Bush to explain his latest signing statement and accountability is placed in the forefront.

Sure not like the old days with the 109th blind as a bat, do as they like congress.

A better bill would be to send Bush and his thugs to the Hague for crimes against humanity trials.

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

As others have noted, in and of itself, this may not get Bush to do anything about ending the occupation of Iraq. However, it helps draw the line in the sand and apply a little more pressure. Anything to keep the issue on the front page, on the TV screens, and on the blogs helps propel the grassroots movement. It also may help set the stage for impeachment with more props.

  11. Kevin says:

Looks like Kennedy is trying to make himself look good. This bill will go no ware. I’m assuming he got the idea from a bar napkin.

  12. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Kevin

No, maybe from bar “ware”, though. Either way, I’ll drink a toast to the idea.

  13. JaneESchneider says:

Kevin, why do you hate American troops? Seriously, in your opinion, why is this not a good idea? Simply because it’s Ted Kennedy?

  14. ScrewBush says:

Every day Bush is in office the lives of Americans here and abroad are at risk. If for no other reason than his existing track record of utter incompetence, it’s time to impeach for the political, moral, and constitutional reason of protecting this country from enemies foreign and domestic.

If you’re not for impeachment now, are you waiting for another 9/11, Katrina, or Iraq to change your mind? Unfortunately we will all suffer while the fence sitters collect ever more evidence of this man’s total incompetance.

Here’s part 1 of a comment I made earlier on Ablog:

In the tough neighborhood where I grew up in the sixties and seventies, there was a word, that some kids used, for kids who were always scared and never stood up for themselves: Punk.

I posted a comment here yesterday about how I have been trying (in my posts) to find ways to inspire people to work together to find real, lasting, solutions to some of the problems we are facing. But, that I am not very hopeful that enough people are standing up strongly against the surge plan. And that it looks like I will be joining the chorus of blame and start directing my comments toward the people, working for the government/ corporations/and main stream media, who have not enough to stop this madness.

So, I watched the second part of Hardball with Chris Matthews last night. I have watched enough Hardball in the past, to have a feel for the show.

Mr. Matthews does his best to make it sound like the Democrats are no different than the republicans. I believe he is nothing more than an apologist for the failures of the administration. The democrats have been in control of the house and senate for what, four days? Yet Mr. Matthews is going out of his way to lay the ground work to place blame, on the democrats. At one point, he said something to effect of; are they all talk or will the democrats cut funding for the war. He made a big deal about the day off yesterday. He implied it was no different than what the republicans did. Mr. Matthews said it was because of the game, but I did not hear him say anything about the freshman members being in training yesterday.

Mr. Matthews, this is not a game.

  21. DM says:

This isn’t a challenge, btw. This is the expected response to the 30,000 troop challenge Bush threw out the minute he saw that he wouldn’t get a free ride from Congress.

Bush will lose his challenge. Congress will pass Kennedy’s bill easily, for one reason – it defends Congress’ own authority, and self-aggrandisement is every politician’s priority. It’s a softball shot that the knee-jerk media will turn into a political homerun.

Then, Bush will have to decide on whether to whine like a little kid and stamp his feet hoping that his 23% popularity is louder that the rest of the increasingly pissed off country, or face increasing rounds of questioning from Congress who, after a long layoff, has rediscovered the word “why?”

Karl Rove isn’t a genius, he’s a freaking idiot. Every decision maker looks like a genius when they live in a vaccuum, and posing the troop increase was a dumbass move for someone who isn’t getting a free ride anymore. The right political answer was the only option they had left – ignore the war detractors altogether. Ignorance had got them to where they were, they needed to stick to it.

Now that it’s been proven possible to shake them, there’ll be a whole lotta shakin’ going on. This administration is over. Toast. Finis.

  27. Peter says:

Hey, Greg, what other parts of the Constitution would you like to rip up?

No kidding, Jane. Compare: the extensive powers over the military and its uses explicitly granted to Congress in Article I Section 8, or a vague, expansive interpretation of the phrase “commander-in-chief” in Article II. Which one takes Constitutional precedence is pretty damned clear.

Easy, Greg, easy. The authorization was that Bush would go to war as a last resort after getting a second UN resolution. Bush was also supposed to come back every 60 days to provide more evidence of the threat the Hussein regime to our country. Bush hasn’t lived up to his part of the authorization. In addition, the constitution clearly states that authorized war funding is good for 2 years. Greg, some of us believe the cowardly thing to do is to trash our constitution because we’re afraid. You evidently are part of this freightened group of unfortunate Americans.

  31. Bluedog49 says:

Greg Nevins: “What about the Terrorists that attacked the U. S. on 9/11 and KILLED over 3,000 Innocent people.”

Yes, Greg, what about those guys? Where is Osama bin laden, anyway? Last I heard, he was hiding in the mountains of Tora Bora when your dear leader pulled almost everyone away to attack Iraq.

  32. lw says:

“What about the Terrorists that attacked the U. S. on 9/11 and KILLED over 3,000 Innocent people.”

    They are dead.

“Bush is fighting AGAINST the Terrorists”

Bush is fighting no one. He is sending other people’s kids to Iraq to kill or be killed by people who had nothing to do with 9/11.

How many Iraqis were involved in 9/11?

    Answer: None.

  33. Bluedog49 says:

Greg Nivens: “He only stayed in Office because Congress didn’t have the BALLS to REMOVE HIM FROM OFFICE!!!!!!! ”

No, he stayed in office because there were not enough votes in the Senate to convict him. Senators were not convinced that lying about a personal affair was an impeachable offense. Greg, you need to calm down and enter the real world, where there are actually facts. You seem to be stuck in some kind of right-wing bullshit limbo.

  37. Mr Diddy Wah Diddy says:

This is great! Our dictatorial president must be resisted on this, whether or not Kennedy’s bill has the desired effect.

But lost in the controversy over ~20,000 additional troops who haven’t gone to Iraq is the fate of 140,000 troops already there. To these men and women we say, Keep on keepin’ on…however long Bush wants you in Iraq, we’ll see that he has the money to do it…all in the name of “providing the funds you need.”

On Sunday morning, Speaker Pelosi trotted out the timeworn excuse for continued support of the US occupation of Iraq as follows: “Although the new Congress should not refuse to provide the funds that the troops already in Iraq and Afghanistan need…” and “The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them.”
On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Reid said:
WASHINGTON – In a blunt challenge to President Bush, the leader of the Senate’s new Democratic majority said Monday he will “look at everything” within his power to wind down the war in Iraq, short of cutting off funding for troops already deployed.

Until there is real opposition to the quagmire, these pledges of continued funding tell me that our new leadership is quite willing to “stay the course.” If the proposed escalation is defeated, fine, but that leaves our involvement in Iraq right where it’s been…Not good enough!

Dennis Kucinich said: “Each appropriations vote gives the President ‘implied consent’ to continue the war. So it is clear that this war is not only the President’s. This war belongs to Congress as well, to Democrats and Republicans alike, in the House and in the Senate.”

Giving the troops “the funds they need” is cover for maintaining the status quo.
US military involvement in Vietnam didn’t end until Congress turned off the money tap. The result?…the troops were brought home, they weren’t “abandoned.”

Our new leadership’s eagerness to promise “support for the troops” stinks of the fear of appearing “weak on defense”…the same fear that gave Bush the AUMF and every appropriation since then…a fear born of concern for political survival, not American interests.
If Democrats can’t buck up now, fresh on the heels of a voter call for change, and 26% public backing for the president’s conduct of the war, then when?

  38. DM says:

Bush doesn’t have a choice. He can’t veto it, because Congress decides who we wage war on. Check this phrase:

“with intent to violate the Constitution of the United States”

    Recognize that (1868)?

An authorization of force is not a Declaration of War. The Presidents have only been getting away with killing people without a Declaration of War because Congress lets them. Bush has no leg to stand on. He cant say we are in War so he can do as he pleases. We are NOT in war. Until war is declared Congress can play this inbetween peace and war game either way they want.

What’s funnier than shit is that you, Greg, support a party that got it’s ass KICKED by people that you consider unfit for office. Guess you can whine and cry as we put this country back on track despite the efforts of America haters like you to destroy this great nation.

  45. JaneESchneider says:

MA, it’s so nice to be able to count on your objective views on proposed legislation. I’ll ask you the same thing that I asked Kevin, which of course he never answered: Why do you hate our troops? Why would you support an administration that would risk more and more troops’ lives SIMPLY IN ORDER TO SAVE FACE? Why would you support an administration that is so totally incompetent that, if they were employed by a real boss, they would have been fired years ago? Would you have supported this legislation if a Republican had finally grown a set and proposed it? Or is it “All Ted Kennedy, All the Time” with you?

  46. jay walker says:

Hm, let’s see if I got the math correct here:

There are currently about 140,000 troops in Iraq.

In addition, there are more than 100,000 contractors (not counting sub-contractors) in the country, according to the WaPo – many, if not most of them working not in reconstruction, but in security.

Bush wants to increase the troops by 20,000, which is therefore not 1/6, but more in the neighborhood of 1/8 of the current level.

If these 20,000 should be fighting troops, there would be at least 60,000 more required for admin. / support purposes for this contingent.

If not, most likely not more than 5,000 would be actually ‘walking the beat’ (= getting blown into bits and pieces).

And all this should help – how?

But isn’t it a peach for them to go back several years and look for a plausible excuse??? Okay, CLINTON MAY NOT have been the best MORAL president, but hey that’s for him and his wife to decide! American casualties as a result of his affair? Zero – Zip – Nada!!!

But, ole DUMBYA goes into a war without a plan and under false pretenses, and all of the reasons that have nothing to do with the MAJORITY of the trolls arguments…Then when they have no PLAUSIBLE answer, they attack success or the past??? Because of his IDIOTIC reasoning, we have lost 3,000+ soldiers!

Can someone help me with this strategy? And we wonder why this IDIOT (BUSH) thinks he can do the things he does!

But hey Greg! I put it to ANY REPUBLICAN on this board or any other BLOG! If you want to support the war, then I have friends who are waiting in Ft. Sill, OK or ANY local recruiting office!!! Or we can meet one-on-one for combat training and we can truly see where your heart is at! I LAID DOWN THE CHALLENGE before and I challenge you or ANY REPUBLICAN P***y that wants to prove their dedication by enduring ONE WEEK of BASIC training! Now, call my bluff! ******I hate our enemies and want them dead. Not reformed, not reconstituted – dead. I want our troops, whom I respect more than you can conceive, to kill enemies when found and train Iraqis to take care of themselves – if that can be done. Their culture is a serious impediment to self-governance.

“Why would you support an administration that would risk more and more troops’ lives SIMPLY IN ORDER TO SAVE FACE?”
*******A predictable loaded question – I want more troops to secure the capital – hopefully there are enough Iraqi’s who desire a better life for themselves and are willing to work for their freedom.

“Why would you support an administration that is so totally incompetent that, if they were employed by a real boss, they would have been fired years ago?”
*******This is your opinion – which I do not hold in high regard. I supported many aspects of the Clinton administration’s efforts, but found them completely inept in dealing with North Korea and terrorists. “Pitiful” and “impotent” are the words that leap to mind when I consider WTC-I, the African embassy bombings, the USS Cole, etc. Why did you support their incompetency?

“Would you have supported this legislation if a Republican had finally grown a set and proposed it?”
*******I could care less who proposed such an aborted plan. If Chuck Hagel, former Sen. Lincoln Chaffee, or Olympia Snowe proposed such an incomplete plan I would be in opposition.

When I bring up Ted “Breast Stroke” it is only because this “man” does not have the moral compass to stay out of public. This foul example of character has no moral relevance. NONE. And if he wants to put himself on display, he’s fair game.

Congress WILL NOT PASS any Bill proposed by a Known Drunk and Murderer!!!! George Bush already has the Authority to send more troops to Iraq and he doesn’t need the approval from Congress….. They already GAVE IT TO HIM MORONS!!!!!!

Now that it’s been proven possible to shake them, there’ll be a whole lotta shakin’ going on. This administration is over. Toast. Finis.

  66. Barfly says:

Why did you support their incompetency?

Reagan was the most incompetent – until Bush came along. Unless you judge competency by the willingness to betray America and Americans to achieve a short-term goal. How “competent” was Bush senior, giving the go-ahead to Saddam to invade Kuwait, and setting into motion the events that culminated in today’s civil war? Or the “competance” shown by the doddering Reagan. At least Carter tried to rescue the hostages – Reagan sold terrorists weapons to secure their release, and in so doing, revealed himself as a moral coward to the muslim world, willing to appease those who held Americans hostage, and in turn, spurring more hostage taking.

Actually, Nixon was not impeached. Although articles of impeachment were written, they were not acted upon because Nixon resigned first.

    Greg Nevins

Impeachment is like a grand jury indictment. It says a trial can go forth. Clinton was not removed from office because the post-impeachment hearing did not have sufficient evidence to convince Senators to do so. As for Clinton being guilty of perjury, IMHO he was not because perjury involves more than lying under oath. The subject of that lie must be relevant to the issue of the trial. Clinton’s consentual affair had nothing to do with the sexual harrassment charge. Further, it’s questionable that he even lied because he responded using the definitions supplied by the prosecutor. And the end of the day, though, SO WHAT?? Bush’s screwing our Constitution and getting our troops killed is massively more immoral.

Ok, let’s take the money that we are spending in Iraq and redirect it towards ending global hunger. That way the senate can get what they want, and according to the Borgen Project, we’ll only spend $19 billion anually compared to the $300+ billion we have spent on this war thus far. It’s time to support the Millennium Development goals which were agreed on by politicians globally- and one of those includes ending global poverty.

Big gun battle on the streets of Baghdad this morning, lasting 12 hours. Reportedly 50 “insurgents” were killed and US and Iraqi troops were under fire.
Were the “insurgents” Sunni-Iraqis? Were the Iraqi troops with the US troops Shiite-Iraqis?
The govt tells us that Al Qaeda is inserted within the Sunnis — do we believe them? How would one know a Sunni from a Shiite from an AlQaeda? Wasn’t this a battle of civil war that we were engaged in? We have apparently taken sides in the civil war; we have joined the Shiites, against their fellow countrymen, and we have simply participated in trading off one group of domestic terrorists for another.
The puppet govt in Iraq is using Americans to help them beat back the Sunnis in this war of revenge.
Isn’t it apparent to everyone now – even the chimp in the white house?

How much money went to Iraq under Saddam for humanitarian reasons (UN, Oil for food)? Oh, that’s right, he needed a few more palaces.

Nevins, go read the Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq. The bill that is being put forth is stating the situation in Iraq now does not resemble the authorization. The largest focus in the Authorization are as follows:

    Enforce UN Resolutions done

The whole WMD thing done, not found, verified not there, hasn’t been for some time.

Remove Saddam I’m sure you’ve seen the video

The only thing ol GW has is Authorization to defend the national securtiy of the United states against the continuing threat posed by Iraq.

What threat does Iraq pose? Also within the Authorization are reports to congress every 60 days. The president is in violation of this. Also within the Authorization it’s stated that nohting in the resolution supersedes any requirement of the War Powers Resolution.

The President does not have the power to continually use our military forces on an emergency basis without proving the need.

I know you don’t like it but that’s not in the resolution either. So bitch all you want, and cry in a manner that is seen all thru the RedStates. It doesn’t change what binds the President thru the resolution.

Lucky Reagan: by being mentally incompetent, he was able to escape being the first republican to be impeached. 114. JaneESchneider says:

#57: #47 – Jane asks:“Why do you hate our troops?”
******I hate our enemies and want them dead. Not reformed, not reconstituted – dead. I want our troops, whom I respect more than you can conceive, to kill enemies when found and train Iraqis to take care of themselves – if that can be done. Their culture is a serious impediment to self-governance.

First of all, MA, it’s obvious that you are not one who supports a “culture of life”, since you so adamantly want someone to die. Second, being married to a vet, I respect our troops more than you could imagine being able to. Third, the goal of the soldier is to remove the enemy’s ability to make war.. If you can do that without killing anyone, it is considered far superior. Besides, dead men tell no tales. Live prisoners can be questioned. (Without being tortured, I might add.) But it’s apparent now from this last sentence that you hate their culture and wants them dead for it. Is that the problem?

“Why would you support an administration that would risk more and more troops’ lives SIMPLY IN ORDER TO SAVE FACE?”
*******A predictable loaded question – I want more troops to secure the capital – hopefully there are enough Iraqi’s who desire a better life for themselves and are willing to work for their freedom.

First of all, that’s a big “hopefully” to risk more lives on, given the evidence to the contrary so far. Second, this escalation in forces (which is what it is) will not work, according to the vast majority of, well, everyone. The bad guys will do the same thing they did in all the other Iraqi cities, they’ll move out of Baghdad and wait for the heat to die down. They’ll return when the Americans leave, and since your glorious leader has no intentions of withdrawing troops from Iraq no matter how many die for his failed policy, this escalation will, in the end, amount to nothing more than murder.

It’s not just my opinion, it’s the opinion of a majority of the country (if the polls are to be believed.) The first WTC bombing happened mere weeks after Clinton took office. And the people who did it are sitting in jail now. What was so “pitiful” and “impotent” about that? The Republicans were not helpful when he wanted to respond to the African embassy bombings. And as for the USS Cole, Clinton has said that they did not get the official word that al Qaeda was responsible until just before he left office. He prepared a response to it and handed it off to the Bush administration who promptly ignored it. Until 9/11. Bush’s initial response to 9/11 was basically what the previous administration recommended be done in response to the Cole bombing.

First, you didn’t oppose Bush’s invasion despite the fact that his ‘plan’ was so incomplete, it didn’t exist! Second, why continue with all the personal attacks against Senator Kennedy? If your problem is with the content of the proposed legislation, then how does attacking the one who proposed it make your argument any stronger? If you have a problem with the bill, then attack the bill as if Sen Hagel introduced it. Then no one can (rightly) accuse you of having your opinion of the bill swayed by your intense hatred of Sen Kennedy. Otherwise, you simply have no credible beef with it.

When I bring up Ted “Breast Stroke” it is only because this “man” does not have the moral compass to stay out of public. This foul example of character has no moral relevance. NONE. And if he wants to put himself on display, he’s fair game.

He is “on display” because the people of Massachusetts want him “on display”. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t vote to send him back to Congress every six years. Both Bush and Cheney are even fouler “examples of character”, yet you defend and support them vigorously. Sounds like you’re the one who needs her moral compass adjusted.

Greg, I suggest you go over to Pollingreport.com and see for yourself how Americans feel about issues. Even with your limited intelligence and grasp of the issues, you will see that most Americans agree with Democrats on almost every single issue.

  117. Greg Nevins says:

But notice how Nevins completely forgets about Reagan supporting terrorists.

Ronald W. Reagan was the BEST President of the 20th Century!!!! He brought down the Berlin Wall, brought an end to the Evil Empire of the USSR, he built up our Military after Carter had cut Defense spending so much that he couldn’t even rescue our Hostages in IRAN!!!! He gave this Country a TAX CUT that stimulated the economy and we are still feeling the effects of his tax cuts…. Georeg W. Bush is the Greatest President since Roanld W. Reagan!!!!!! Read it and WEEP — you GOOD FOR NOTHING Left Wing Liberal Idiots!!!!!

  118. hellinabucket says:

Greg, I asked you a question and your just being rude. Are you standing by your statement that the only reason the democrats were elected because they were better republicans than the republicans?

Here’s another question that some on this posting find so hard to answer. Are you for or against accountability? If your’e against it than fine. If you are for this government to still be accountable to it’s citizens then answer how can you support this president.

You too muddy retro duddy. I will ask you another question. Did you retire because you were just full of se(a)men or is there something more sinister behind the tooodles.

  119. Unholy Moses says:

I understand that no one wants any blog to be an echo chamber (well, unless that blog is RedState, LGF, The Corner, where they seem to enjoy that kind of thing), but the likes of Greg Nevins don’t add a single thing to the discussion.

The tolerance of the ThinkProgress mods really is astounding.

  120. hellinabucket says:

    116. Mr. Nevins, so the democrats were better at being republicans than the republicans. Blue Democrat is still a Democrat. What was the problem with the republicans? Oh yeah, you said they spent like democrats. Looks like they spent like republicans who ignored or abandoned their core beliefs. So the American public saw that and showed them to the door.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now onto accountability. remember the question?

  121. Bluedog49 says:

Greg, I hate to break it to you, but the Reagan administration was responsible for the largest tax increase on working people in our nation’s history. Since you are completely unaware of this fact, it tends to make me think you are a f*cking idiot.

The only reason the Democrats WON control of the House and Senate is because they RAN Candidates that were more Republican than LIBERAL DEMOCRATS….. They finally learned that they can’t keep running Left Wing Liberal WACKOS anymore if they expect to win… They are called “BLUE DOG DEMOCRATS”. The only library that this misinformation will be in hasn’t been built yet. The GW Bush Presidential Library.

  131. hellinabucket says:

Greg, Greg, Greg, You fight over semantics here. Is Bush an idiot or just a deciever. Why quibble. Is DeLay a Crook or not just because he hasn’t been sent to prison it’s not for me to decide, I wasn’t selected to be on the jury to try him for the crimes he has been charged with. Sure he’s got a fighting chance. So did Saddam.
Foley, don’t you think you should just close the closet on that whole sorrid event.

Ney hasn’t gone to jail? You sure about that?
Cunningham? I bet someone’s going to show you his inmate number soon.
Abramoff has a set of lungs and is singing better than Ashcroft.

I’d like to go hunting with Dead Eye Dick also but are you advocating a premeditated murder. Greg, that’s much more serious than slander.

Now about that accountability issue. Should we have it or not?

    Comment by Greg Nevins

Yeah I just heard on e of hte Blue Dogs interviewed on NPR this morning. He is for gay marriage, pro-choice and wants an end to the war. That doesn’t sound like the REpub platform to me. Oh yeah he also wanted to have a balanced budget. That’s something the Repubs gave up a long time ago. Repubs have no calim to that anymore.

  133. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Greg

Bob Ney was my representative and he agreed to 27 months jail time. And, in case you’re interested in a little truth, our Republican district replaced Ney with a Democrat when they could have voted in another Republican.

And you are correct g. nev, Ney’s not in prison, yet. They haven’t determined his full sentence. He is guilty and that’s not an opinion. That’s one of those fact thingys that keep getting thrown in your face, but just like a deer in headlights you don’t see the oncoming car that runs your ass over.

Now seriously greg, don’t go off on some other vengful rant on how bad the evil democrats are just answer the question.

Are you for this administration being held accountable to the american people or not? It’s really a simple question. even the se(a)men filled mucky so yucky has said she’s for accountability in between swallows of course. Now it’s your turn. Be a man.

katy- – I apologize! Have I stuttered??? Ted “Breast Stroke” Kennedy, managed to get himself out of a submerged car, get to shore, walk back to his hotel, contact his cousin, spin his alibi – viola! – all this BEFORE alerting police or divers that Mary Jo Kopechne was under water – - dead! So if you want to trot out a sweet Prog to oppose the war, bring out the the honest little Martian, Dennis Kucinich. I disagree with him completely, but not for a moment do I think he is void of good character as I think Senator Swimmer has demonstrated – on more than one occasion. Ted Kennedy telling anyone, anywhere the RIGHT thing to do, is a bit like Vito Corleone telling the Mob not to commit crime.

Greg Nevins: “Go to the Library and read the writings of Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of this Great Country we call America…. It would be a much better Country without Left Wing Liberal JERKS like you!!!!”

Here’s one from THE founding father:

“As mankind becomes more liberal they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protection of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations in examples of justice and liberality.”

And yet, 150 years later we get H.L. Mencken saying, “I have nothing against Christianity. It’s Christians I can’t stand.” I wonder if (had he been able to do the impossible and live through to Mencken’s time) Jefferson would have modified his position at all to be in agreement with Mencken, or would he still have something against Christianity? Keep quoting the big guys, Bluedog49. I love it when the quotes from the founders contradict the regressive view of our nation’s founding.

  202. Bluedog49 says:

Wayne, if the founders were alive today, most of them would probably be Unitarian liberals. Jefferson would be reading his “Jefferson Bible” at Unitarian gettogethers. By modern conservative standards, most of them were raving liberals.

I agree that they were liberal by today’s standards. But they were also way more libertarian than today’s right wing authoritarian Republicans. This is why the Republicans we see posting here have such a hard time understanding what our founding fathers were trying to do. Somehow they got the idea that we are supposed to be a nation of people who do whatever the president tells us to do.

“It is agreed on all sides, that the powers properly belonging to one of the departments ought not to be directly and completely administered by either of the other departments. It is equally evident, that none of them ought to possess, directly or indirectly, an overruling influence over the others, in the administration of their respective powers. It will not be denied, that power is of an encroaching nature, and that it ought to be effectually restrained from passing the limits assigned to it. After discriminating, therefore, in theory, the several classes of power, as they may in their nature be legislative, executive, or judiciary, the next and most difficult task is to provide some practical security for each, against the invasion of the others. What this security ought to be, is the great problem to be solved. “

Kennedy’s legislation has critics even among Senate Democrats and the chances that it will get a majority vote in the Senate aren’t good.

Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, indicated on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he believed such a move would be unconstitutional since it might transgress onto the president’s role as commander-in-chief.

    the actual quote:

MR. RUSSERT: …there’s really little Democrats can do. Why not cut off funding for the war?

SEN. BIDEN: I’ve been there, Tim. You can’t do it.

    MR. RUSSERT: Why?

SEN. BIDEN: You can’t do it. It’s—what—because it made sense in the Constitution when you said you could cut off funding when you had no standing army. We have a standing army with a budget of hundreds of billions of dollars. You can’t go in and, like a tinker toy, and play around and say, “You can’t spend the money on this piece and this piece and”—he—able—he’ll be able to keep those troops there forever constitutionally if he wants to.

MR. RUSSERT: Why not have legislation then that would cap the number of troops in Iraq?

SEN. BIDEN: Because it’s very difficult to—it’s constitutionally questionable whether or not you can do that. I think it is unconstitutional to say, “We’re going to tell you you can go, but we’re going to micromanage the war.” When we wrote the Constitution, the intention was to give the commander in chief the authority how to use the forces, when you authorize them, to be able to use the forces.

  251. mrJJ says:

The “Unitary Executive” theory is really just another name for the ancient “King With Advisors” form of government, widely used around the world for thousands of years in human history. The basic idea is that the King has the final authority and makes all the final decisions. He may consult with his advisors, but he is free to disregard their advice. He may look at the law, but he is not required to follow it. The role of the people is to go along quietly with whatever the King wants to do.

THE ESSENTIAL PROBLEM FOR US is that this Theory denies the authority of Congress, the Supreme Court, or anything else to interfere with the President’s performance of his functions, however he chooses. Thus Congress and the Supreme Court become merely Advisors, with no authority over the President.

That is Dictatorship, the very thing the American Revolution was fought to eliminate. Thus we see that the Unitary Executive Theory is a deviant theory, inherently anti-American, and has no place anywhere in our system of goverment.

Note** Justice Roberts & Scallia are both 100% in favor of the Unitary..

We are not “at war” we are “occupiers” sandwiched between two

All reasons given have been proven false. The we screwed the pooch in the reconstruction phase due to incompetence and greed.

Nobody has been able to show where he was when he was supposed to be on duty. None. Why there’s still $10,000 out there for anyone who can positively place Bush on the military base as he says he was. The money is still waiting there.

Greg, all you have is anger. Not facts, not truth, not even moral values. It’s going to suck for you for quite some time.

Way to go Ted Kennedy. Finally some accountability. And a bill to do away with the signing statement should be introduced also. Pelosi most likely said impeachment was “off the table” to remove any appearance of conflict-of-interest that would arise if she were thrust into the presidency as a result of the coming impeachment.

What we need to do is to pressure Pelosi not to interfere with impeachment maneuverings within her party. Sending her Do-It-Yourself impeachments legitimizes her when she is forced to join the impeachment movement in the future.

Sacks and sacks of mail are about to arrive in Nancy Pelosi’s office initiating impeachment via the House of Representative’s own rules this Monday January 15th. This legal document is as binding as if a State or if the House itself passed the impeachment resolution (H.R. 635).

There’s a little known and rarely used clause of the “Jefferson Manual” in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process. That’s where we come in. In addition to a House Resolution (635), or the State-by-State method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.

Greg, anyone who worships and thinks GWB is a born leader must be insane, inept or simply misguided. Think about GWB’s demeanor (how he acts). He’s nervous, timid, shifts his eyes constantly, stumbles on words (or mangles them completely). Are these signs of a born leader? Google “is Bush crazy” and you’ll see some authoritatve commentary on the “born leader’s” mental state.

Also, does anyone really care whether Kennedy is a reformed alcoholic or whatever? Stay to the point. The dems are part of a process to check GWB’s balance (unless GWB signs it away). GWB has trampled our freedom over and over again and he’s convinced you that that’s OK. Suppose he’s done a good job at that, at least. Actually, I can’t even attribute that fact to GWB, but to his cronies that push all of the propaganda to your nondiscriminating eyes and ears.

You know, those that have actually gone to war would have been much more reluctant to start one again. Why didn’t we just use the CIA to covertly put these guys out? Answer: cause the Cheney/Rumsfeld gang saw an opportunity to make some cash and come out heroes. Well, it didn’t work. Cause eventually the truth of war (murder, rape, robbery, torture) reared it’s ugly head.

I hardly ever post this stuff, but after reading Greg’s ill-informed misguided comments, I’m mad as hell and hope we don’t ever have a chance to meet on the street. Greg, please reread the comments above. I hope you’ll change your state and not be so blind. If not, then please crawl in a hole and reflect on the torture in our prison camps or how young children die every day because of GW’s decisions (he is the decider, after all) or, better yet, just sign up for the GWB “what do we do now” gang. I sure your ideas would be appreciated there (especially the all caps).

If you’re going to go in and try to topple Saddam Hussein, you have to go to Baghdad. Once you’ve got Baghdad, it’s not clear what you do with it. It’s not clear what kind of government you would put in place of the one that’s currently there now. Is it going to be a Shia regime, a Sunni regime or a Kurdish regime? Or one that tilts toward the Baathists, or one that tilts toward the Islamic fundamentalists? How much credibility is that government going to have if it’s set up by the United States military when it’s there? How long does the United States military have to stay to protect the people that sign on for that government, and what happens to it once we leave?

Kind of wants to smack every blind, fear mongering republican upside the head and point out how badly we’ve been missled.

(Well, Bush and the neo-cons were “dying” to send somebody else’s kids to die–if you’re into figurative hyperbole.)

The ONLY national interest has to do with oil, and the wonderful rhetoric about freedom and democracy is bullsh*t for the multitudes.

Saddam was OUR sonofabitch to three U.S. administrations, including the period in which the Kurds were gassed, and 99% of the killing of rivals and rebellious Shias.

GWB lied us into war. He broke FISA law. He broke Geneva Convention agreements. He invaded a foreign country without provocation, citing UN resolutions but without UN sanction.
He has used over 1000 signing statements essentially saying he is above the Constitution and the Congress, including the right to open your personal mail without obtaining a warrant.

It really is time to cut the crap. Bush is a fascist, and should be not only impeached but convicted.

    Troop Surge Already Under Way

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Jan. 10, 2007— President Bush’s speech may be scheduled for tonight, but the troop surge in Iraq is already under way.

ABC News has learned that the “surge” Bush is expected to announce in a prime time speech tonight has already begun. Ninety advance troops from the 82nd Airborne Division arrived in Baghdad today.

An additional battalion of roughly 800 troops from the same division are expected to arrive in Baghdad Thursday.

It is the first small wave of troops in a new White House strategy that is expected to put more than 20,000 additional U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq and likely require new call-ups of the National Guard.

The president is expected to deliver his announcement about the increase of troops, a plan that has already been met with stiff criticism from many members of Congress, in a speech tonight from the White House.

The arrival of additional forces in Iraq comes a day after leading Democrats said they would back legislation that would block funding to pay for the additional military forces.

  354. Nellie Bly says:

    To:(Sic) Greg Nevins

I have vowed to do this every time I see someone call Ted Kennedy an alcoholic or a “killer,” due to a car accident on a bridge, years ago.

A girl was killed by drowning during a tragic car accident. That is all-The End.
But nobody brings up another accident in which Laura Welch drove thru a stop sign in TX, when she was 17, & killed a teen boy in another car. That boy just happened to be an ex boyfriend of hers.

Nobody tested her for alcohol, or put her on trial for a wrongful death. It was called a tragic “accident” & forgot.

What happened to that girl? She is now the First Lady, Laura Bush. Should we condemn her for the rest of her life as a “killer,” as you do to Kennedy?

And while you are on the theme “booze” and alcoholism, we know for certain that Geo W has been an alcoholic, which almost led to early divorce between him & Laura. And he has refused to discuss his cocaine useage.
    PUBLIC RECORD.

So it is really senseless to keep on saying evil things against Kennedy, who has a noble family of war heroes, men who dedicated them selves to public service, & women who have done enormous good thru charities.

Not to mention 2 brothers who died in political office, in large part due to an effort to demonize them by the GOP. JFK and RFK, President & Attorney General. I am proud of them as great idealistic men who serve to protect the Constitution, & the values of our Founding Fathers.

All of whom would be doing somersaults in their graves if they knew what Bush & the GOP are doing right now to our beloved America.

  355. Nellie Bly says:

    On topic of Fascism:

Under which admin has our freedom of speech been cut off?

And the media has been controlled by Lush Limberger types of propagandists on the air 24/7 for the last 20 YEARS.

And the writ of habeas corpus has been cancelled very recently, which is unConstitutional.

And the Patriot Act was rushed thru due to 9/11, which gives Dictator type powers to President
Bush as long as he is involved in War.
Which is why he will never want to leave Iraq. Not to mention the oil over there.

Has anyone even mentioned the 2000 & 2004 elections were rigged? Numerous men have investigated details & found huge evidence of election fraud & tampering by use of Diebold voter machines, etc. Which leaves no doubt that political crimes were rampant to cheat the American people out of their duly elected leaders

And rigging an election in a nation which is a democracy is equal to treason.
Since democracy = govt of the people, by the people, & for the people, using the voice of the people thru their elected choice of representatives.

Using a foreign policy of preemptive strikes, which is a violation of UN law & all treaties, & puts us in position of being hated & feared, as a bully nation, that does not follow ethical or moral rules of
conduct. Which has led to most enemy nations arming them selves, to protect themselves from any further bomb attacks from a rogue USA.

Trade agreements that bankrupt the US & outsource industry & jobs to foreign govts, which lead to economic chaos & hi deficits we owe to Communist China.

Refusing to guard our borders to keep terrorists & mexican “illegals” out, so they don’t overwhelm
our social programs & prisons, & schools & hospitals.

Which admin signs an agreement with Vincente Fox, Mexico to create a MERGER of Canada, Mexico, & the USA, which will end up erasing all our borders? And will erase American sovereignty, & maybe our whole identity as a nation? And will most likely end this democracy.

Not to mention starting useless war in many nations, to kill off thousands of our troops.

GUESS WHO. & then tell me where you will find Fascism &
    Communism in America

oh and with the mention of Bush being a fascist (a statement with which i agree), read this link. it’s quite interesting.

    Bush another Hitler?

  358. Amelia Aerhart says:

Amazing parallels do exist between “W” & uncle Adolph. We are not capable of truly seeing the totality of things until they are right in front of our eyes.

But it is hard to ignore that “W”’s cohorts say that teachers orgs (like the NEA) are really “terrorist” associations, & that Environmentalists R truly “terrorists” & that some journalist who opposes Bush & his regime are real “terrorists” & then they claim the right to imprison/ torture any of those people they please.

Recently a news man who has criticized Bush, rec’d anthrax in his mail. He had to evacuate office & burn clothes, & take RX antibiotics. It is really typical of right wingers to be not only stupid, but dangerous psychotics who employ acts of violence & terrorism themselves, while accusing others of being the bad guys.

Of course they use continual 24/7 propaganda to numb minds of the people, so they accept with -out question, all the horrible lies & complete falsehoods fed to them by their Fascist Big Brother.

Notice they will not arrest illegal alien drug dealers, but they WILL arrest Cindy Sheehan for trying to protest a rotten war that has killed her precious son. He is now gone, dead, forever, due to Bush’s idiot war.

Bush has said he has spoken to God, but we should remind him often that Jesus Christ is the Prince of PEACE, (not war).

And the God of LOVE & PEACE would never speak to him to lead us into a useless & costly war, killing off the best young men of a generation.

Blessed are the meek, turn the other cheek, turn swords into plowshares, & do not make war any more. Those are the words of the Lord.

NOTE also: That Armageddon is a real geographical place, in Palestine. It is called the Plains of Megiddo, near the area of Esdraelon.

Messing around in the Middle East with Moslem nations, is asking for trouble.

And many experts agree that the most likely place that was the ancient Garden of Eden (in the Bible) was in or near IRAQ. Holy land — so of course our great leader Bush had to go bomb it to hell. Such genius.

That is enough proof to me that God would be enraged at Bush, & never allow him to Win in IRAQ.

Did anybody notice that opinion polls show W is not at peak popularity right now? Maybe God is trying to tell him something, & he ought to back out of Iraq, ASAP. Since God may have chosen that place for man’s first Paradise, for a reason. Not to have it bombed into rubble by arrogant fools, seeking oil.

It is TRUE that Bush is trying to merge our nation with Mexico, Canada & other S.American countries. Which can erase our borders & take the USA off any future map or globe.

Transformation to take place by 2010, which is only 3 yrs.

Bush thinks he can do this without any approval of our Congress, or will of the people. We must really send up a big shout to our Senate & Congress to tell them what we think about that. Or we will not ever be a democracy again.

  359. greener says:

also, what do the “islamic extremists” and other terrorists mostly claim to be the reason for their attacks? ill tell you what:

    1. hate of america (obvious reason, its because of all the bombs)

    2. it is the word of God (or Allah, or equivalent).

  361. Sharon says:

Why would anyone believe that, all of a sudden, this administration has the right answer?
How many more innocent people, while not the loved ones of those ready to send someone else’s child to war, have to die?
This is not about the ego of politics. This is about human life. When I see the loved ones of members of this administration and the politicans who rubber stamp their decisions, along with people who are so ready and eager to call those who are against the war (who, by the way, are the ones who are really fighting for the health and well-being of military personnel and their families) unpatriotic and cowards, enlist to go to Iraq, then maybe I’ll believe THEY honestly think this is a viable plan. Until then, this is an immoral and hateful use of human life.

    Hey you Think Progress people

I hope everyone is ok. I watched some of the way forward stuff on the telly, but it allmost made me hurl. George was looking pretty despondent and rightfully so. It would be worth no amount of money to be in his shoes in these days. He asked for it though, when he told Micky Herkowitz that he wanted to be the War President in 1999, and that he wanted to go to war with Iraq. Every president who was somebody, was famous because he was a presiden’t during a war. yep…Dubya got his wish. All it took was a bunch loonies from the PNAC, and the sacrifice of the World Trade Center.

And…Here he is, a mentally challenged and incompetent excuse for a human bean, trying to be the commander in chief of the most powerful country on the planet, and with a bunch of advisers and script writers, that could very well be from another part of the universe. If you don’t believe me take a good look at Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleeza Rice.

As everybody knows…Allmost every government position is filled with a member or affiliate of the PNAC. Anyhoo Dubya can’t speak worth a damn, so they had to rig him up with a few high tech devices so it would look like he could. He avoids press conferences like the plague, because that requires thought, even when using his hearing device. There are too many times that he doesn’t understand the word, and sometimes he obviously waits too long between sentences.

Anyway, it’s just about over for Dubya. If we can’t get him impeached he will probably lose it anyway. It’s really a sad affair, but I have zero sympathy for him. He is in the wrong place at the wrong time because he wanted to be there, and the whole planet is in danger because of what was done for oil, money, and power.

Bush will likely send the troops over to Baghdad LONG b-4
Congress ever gets around to a Vote, so the dice are rolled.
How are our guys supposed to train the Iraqis, if WE DO NOT speak their Arab language? Do we have thousands of guys as translators? Do we have interpreters on each soldier’s back?
It is Mission Impossible over there, & our boys s/b here watching football & eating hotdogs, instead of being shot at by nut case Arabs & Iraqi pyro-maniacs. Just being used for live target practice. Not a good scenario.

  366. Amelia Aerhart says:

Speaking of Hitler & Bush —it is FACT that Prescott Bush, (”W”s grandpa) was among financiers of the Third Reich, in WWII. He traded with IG Farber, biggest industrial corp in Germany back then, which built all the concentration camps & Zyklon gas used to kill the Jews in the ovens. Gpa Bush kept on aiding Hitler till US govt stopped him with the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1942.

Then, the Skull & Bones (at Yale) that both Daddy Bush & W (Jr) belonged to, was named after the deaths head insignia on Nazi SS caps.

But even worse are the multitudes of Fascist policies out of this admin.

    Propaganda 24/7

    Control of media

Military aggression around the world, used to acquire resources.

    Suppress Dissent

    Leader = Dictator

    Suspend Rights of the People

    Rigging Elections

    Reichstag Fire =
    9/11 WTC attack

Just the tip of the iceberg w/Bush.

  367. Geezer Power says:

I found this on the PNAC website this am.

Here’s a letter to congress from two years ago, that seems to be asking for a lot of the things that Bush & Co. are attempting to put in place today.

The PNAC also seems to be concerned by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution that places the power and the duty to raise and support the military forces of the United States in the hands of the Congress.

I wonder what kind of letter that they are going to send the new Democratic congress and senate?

    PNAC

  368. Nellie Bly says:

    Hello Geezer Power:

I agree PNAC is 1 of groups assisting the global effort to “spread democracy” abroad, despite they are destroying it right here. This is so contradictory, that you have to learn it is a lying subversive ruse. We agree it is a group behind Bush 100% & influencing this admin’s policies.

PNAC is also one group behind the coming MERGER of US with Canada & Mexico due to occur in 2010

They sound almost bland, & comforting, in the letter U sent which asks increase of our military by 25,000 EACH YEAR.

They will have to recruit from the old people’s homes soon, to get that amt of soldiers. (ha)

Say, Geezer, if U are near my age, 60,
we both recall WWII. So we have enough sense to distrust the Fascist policies of Bush & PNAC. Or at least the sense to recognize it.

I am newbie to the Net, so would you tell me where to find you (on another thread of this web site)? I think this one is losing force for the moment.
